I went there being all excited because of all the good reviews. Never making that mistake again. My hair is curly when wet, wavy when dry.
They DON’T know how to deal with curly hair. When she started brushing my hair, it hurt and she was using legit a small toothed comb. I told her I usually use a wide toothed comb (when the conversation came up) and she just dismissed me.
I had a haircut and had my hair rolled as well. The haircut is terrifying. One piece of my hair is legit like 2 or 3 inches taller than the other one (my hair is curly so you cant tell till its straight). The roll is the worst thing I could’ve imagined. My mom usually rolls my hair at home and it turns out almost completely straight. This however looked like I just got out of the shower, blowdried my hair on HOT HEAT (so LOTS and I mean LOTS of frizz), and then just started whipping it around. My hair has a part, but now it looks like an afro (no, not saying afros are bad but I just prefer my beautiful straight to wavy sleek hair). The stylist couldn’t even do the part line straight. It was all zigzaggy. I kept telling the stylist that there was a lot of frizz (because she basically just slapped the rollers on my hair and put clips to “secure” the hair pieces)and that it won’t turn out straight. She just kept reassuring me. The result was as expected. WORST HAIR DAY EVER. I will absolutely never come back here again. She basically seemed like she wanted to just get done as soon as possible and go home. The customer service is good, yes, which is why they got 2 stars. Also, NEVER ASK FOR A LEVEL ONE STYLIST. They will absolutely reck havoc on your hair. It makes sense why none of the reviews mention any of the Level 1 stylists.

Love this place! Obviously don't get here often enough. Devon is my girl...sorry, my goddess stylist. I adore you Devon, I hope you know this! I just go in and say THIN THIS MESS OUT! The rest is her blank canvas as long as I walk out with SHORT HAIR that has been thinned out I'm sure to be amazed with a little bit of groovy and some Sass in my steps when all is said and done. Everybody here is very professional and friendly- you feel welcome as soon as you come in the door. You are always offered a cold water or coffee while you wait, which is never long, and the salon is always so clean. I highly recommend Groovy Kat's, all the stylists are pretty awesome here! More...

I used Groovy Katz for my wedding party's hair and makeup. I have to say, the services were very professional and the ladies were very personable. We all got exactly what we wanted (my bridesmaids got very low key elements and I was a bit more flashy as the bride).They actually started on us early because we had gotten there early, and they finished in a timely manner so I could go about my wedding day schedule. Each of the ladies working on us did a wonderful job and gave us tips for how to keep our hair and makeup pristine throughout the day.The prices were reasonable: Not too expensive, not cheap either. Just visited this salon for a major change in my hair. Cut 3-4 inches and had a lot of highlights put in. LOVE my hair! I have gotten several compliments on how natural the color looks and the cut is exactly what I wanted! Coming to Groovy Katz is always a relaxing treat. I love the Aveda scents, tea, scalp massages, and of course the great hair service. I've had several haircuts with Callie and am impressed with her every time. My wavy, thick, frizzy hair can be a challenge, but she always cuts it in a flattering style that allows me to wear it wavy or straightened. I have never been to this salon but I went to get hair cut. I'm 21 and go to the university. I have very nervous about cutting my hair short but Tarra, the girl who cut my hair did a great job and the service was excellent! 40 dollars for a haircut was reasonable. I will go back for sure!!! More...

I have to say, I really miss Groovy Katz, and Jacque, who was my regular stylist. If I lived closer to Iowa City these days, I'd commute back just to get my hair cut. I went to Jacque years ago at Zender's and found her again when she moved to Groovy Katz. She's great at what she does: I always left the salon happy with my cut, and it always grew out nicely (a true indicator of cut quality, in my book). Years later I still think the name is a little goofy but Groovy Katz is a fantastic salon nonetheless, and by far the best I went to in the Iowa City area. More...

I recently switched to this salon and had the great luck of getting an appointment with Callie. She is fun to talk to and is always up for something new. After a few initial cuts I decided that she could be entrusted to give me a short, pixie-type haircut. She nailed it!! Past experience has shown me that not all stylists are comfortable or experienced with short styles for women. Callie is not one of them. The cherry on top is that she does neck trims for free in between my haircuts, which is super! As for the salon in general, I can say that it has a hip, young vibe to it. Everything is very clean and professional. I especially enjoy the location--right next to Java House. I often walk next door for some coffee and study time after my haircut. So convenient!
