In some cases, you may need to obtain planning permission from your local authority. Most garages are longer and thinner than most rooms in a typical house. To achieve a more natural shape, consider using a stud or block walling to convert the garage into two rooms, typically a toiler, shower or store room.

You will always need to obtain a building warrant to convert into living accommodation. This can be achieved via your local authority.
I would recommend getting quotes for multi trades or via a building contractor like us who will do this for you, take into consideration what the room will be utilised for, and ensure all your planning, permits etc are in place prior to works commencing.

Depending on roof structure and planning constraints, almost all houses can benefit from this extension with a bit of planning, and it will have the benefit of adding value to the property and extra room space. The main feature in deciding if your loft is suitable for conversion is available head height, pitch and any obstacles such as a water tank or chimney stack. A structural and physical inspection is also required.

Basic stages as follows:
Roof is inspected for suitability; Architect and surveyor will draw up plans; Building Control Approval obtained; loft can be cleared out; joists can be laid, floors insulated, a dormer fitted if installing one or Velux window; Staircase fitted, roof insulated, electrics upgraded, walls plastered and finally decoration of room.
