Kendal Shepherd, BVSc., CCAB, MRCVS
‘Dangerous Dog? How would your dog cope with a DDA behavioural assessment? How to avoid you and your dog being ‘caught’ up in a ‘court’ case!’
Thursday 5th November 2015
7:00 – 10:00pm
1st Barnet Scout Hut
Priory Grove, off Westcombe Drive, Barnet, Herts.
Kendal Shepherd is a veterinary surgeon, certified clinical animal behaviourist, expert witness on the assessment of dogs and their behaviour for many of the court and police cases in the UK, the author of "The Canine Commandments" and "Keeping ourselves safe around dogs”, an educational dog bite prevention resource published by ASAB.
Kendal is actively involved in a vet/medic ‘One Health’ co-operative approach, which considers dog bites as a public health issue. As such, they need investigation for cause, rather than prosecution of owners considered at fault.
Kendal Shepherd qualified from Bristol University in 1978. With extensive experience in small animal practice, she was the first veterinary surgeon to be accredited by ASAB as a certificated clinical animal behaviourist in 2005. She is currently heavily involved in the behavioural assessment of dogs for the Courts under both sections 1 and 3 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
The evening will focus on a summary of the contexts in which legal cases arise, how they are assessed and how to avoid a dog being considered ‘dangerous’
Tickets: £15 per person (We are happy to offer 10% discount for pre-booked groups of 5 or more) (Cash or Cheque. Please enclose SAE if you require paper ticket when purchased by post)
Hot and cold drinks / snacks provided.
Parking and exercise area for dogs are available at the venue.
Well behaved and quiet dogs are welcome to be in the audience but please be prepared to take them out if they are noisy and disruptive.

Please note, that Handfeeding principle does not mean that you bring your dog to training classes hungry. We are talking about the philosophy, principle and habit that you want to develop in your dog, not a magic cure.
Rescue / Problem Dogs’ Rehabilitation class
is held at:
RSPCA Southridge Animal Centre
Saving one dog will not change the World
But surely for that one dog, the world will change forever!
Adopting a rescue dog is not always as easy or relaxing as a walk in the park!
Whether you are now the lucky and proud owner of a "Southridge Dog", or whether your own dog needs some training, start off on the right paw and attend our fortnightly dog training classes.
All sizes and ages are welcome but please be prepared to meet some not-so-well-behaved dogs at this class.
The dog training classes are held every other Saturday at Southridge, beginning promptly at 9.00am and finishing at 11.00am.
Each session cost £7.50 which is payable at the end of the class (All proceeds go to the Friends of Southridge charity, looking after the Centre's dogs).
Group dog training classes will give you an opportunity to train and socialize your dog in a professional but friendly and relaxed environment.
You will also be able to speak to the owners of other rehomed dogs and hear of their experiences.
There are usually 3 trainers available here so you will surely feel looked after and your questions will be answered.
Dates for 2015: 24/10; 07/11; 21/11; 05/12; 19/12
All ages, all breeds and types even problem dogs can be accommodated – please enquiry by email / phone if unsure.
Please note that due to my busy schedule of shows, demos and competitions, I can’t always be at all of these classes but alternative arrangements have been made for each session and there’ll be a trainer/s present to help you along the way.
Open Air Mixed-Abilities Socialisation Class in Hendon:
Sunny Hill Park, NW4, open-air socialisation mixed-abilities classes will also run on the same dates, starting at 12 noon. Each session is an hour and ¾ long, and is currently free of charge.
This is a "train-yourself" class, where we try to give you as much guidance and advice, with a format of a social gathering, or a Club Meeting of the Good Boys out in an open air. Many return trainees pop in to brush up on their dog training and some newcomers choose to bring a chair and observe what and how it's done the Handfeeding way! Please feel welcome at all of our group classes!
Dates are as above.
Disclaimer: Dog Training is a magical experience, but it takes time (and, most importantly, patience, skills and devotion) so please do not expect an instant fix! We will not use any strong aversive stimuli at the classes, and will ask you to remove and never use anywhere around us any chock-chain, pinch-collar or e-device if you are using one. Please expect to make some progress, but do listen to what is being told at the class. Taking it slowly and at your level is highly advisable, take a note of the homework exercises and break the session down into bite-size fragments to suit you and your pet.
Come prepared – we are a Handfeeding School, and most reward-based methods would go a long way with us, but if your ideas on dog training are about dominating your dog, forcing them to work and just punishing bad behaviours – I am afraid we are not the school for you!
Please come and observe, we never charge anyone spectating, as long as they do not bring dogs as spreading the word and educating the public is our prime target!
We can also help with your busy schedule and take care of your precious hounds on daily basis.
We all need to get going in order to remain sane, and to keep fit, both physically and mentally. So do our dogs too! We also believe in professional help with behavioural issues, huge part of which could be reinforced during our daily exercise in busy social and regularly changing environment.
So whatever the reason for your enquiry, give it a try, and I am confident that you will like all the benefits: our skills, professionalism, reliability and the results. We are also proud to be the only registered, approved, Kennel Club listed and insured walking round and training School around – and even with all this in mind I am sure you will not find a cheaper help elsewhere.
We invite all our customers to come for a pre-booking visit to help you with that important decision, after all, your dog is a family for you, and we want to assure you that the same goes here.
Prices for these services are listed below, but please do not hesitate to ask us for a breakdown may you need it:
Walks are held in some gorgeous spots of Hampstead, Hendon, Golders Green or Welsh Harp and neighbouring areas, and are 90 minutes long. Together with drive there and back your dog is prone to be tired and
stimulated, so why not give us a try if you’ve never been on our walk yourself – we always have a few friends joining us on these walks, and seeing so many well-behaved dogs walking and playing together is something you will proudly talk about for months to come! And don’t forget the camera – you have not seen anything like this! We currently have 3 equipped and ventilated vans on the road at all times meaning that you are covered all year round,
Monday to Friday with no exceptions, and we do work on all public and bank holidays.
At the moment we have a few vacancies on our Dog Walking Round.
One-off walk - £15 flat fee, incl. collection and delivery (offer on week’s booking - £65)
Two dogs (same household) Walk - £15 for each dog (offer on regular week’s booking - £110 for two dogs)
Also, speak to us if your dogs are smaller and well behaved
And the “dirty” part now:
We are not the “pavement-walking” or “I don’t do rain”-group – we all go cross-country, mud-sliding, speed-of-light running and dog-paddling on our various walks and swims in and around North and North-West London in any weather. So if you are waiting for your pet to arrive from the walk dry and clean, make sure you have a towel waiting for him/her at home. Or we would be happy to make arrangements to have your dog washed by a professional at the end of the run if you authorise us to do so.
And come and meet the Team! See you there!
You might have a long schedule at work, or just want to go out for a day. Don’t leave your pet sitting there looking at a clock for hours – I am sure he/she’d rather go out too and spend time with friends.
Day’s fee - £25 (£35 for 2 dogs) Late stays at no extra pay.
Lives at times take over, and I know myself how important it is to relax and not worry about your loved ones. Well, you can not drop your husband here I am afraid, but we can certainly help you with your pooch. Please enquire about our prices and arrangements and please visit the website for more information on it all!
All ages, all breeds and types even difficult dogs can be accommodated. (We may advise you on a one-to-one walks if your dog requires a bit of help socialising to start with, but one of our experienced handlers will be able to speed things up so your dog will be able to join the group in no time!)
Basic and on-going training will be provided to all dogs involved free of charge - after all, there's a reason we are this popular – our pack is our pride and joy!
Please see our website www.dimadogs.com or www.goodboydogschool.co.uk for more on it.

Bettie the star of our homemade videos helping you to learn all a pup should know:
Video 1: Bettie is learning the ropes:
Video 2: So, what would the day 2 bring? Little Bettie learning new skills.
Video 3: Bettie's 7th day of Handfeeding - skills of a 3 month old pup are amazing to my opinion - now she's becoming reliable, well focused and predictably keen to follow instructions and want to learn more!
Video 4, Handfeeding, Day 8. Social aspect of dog training plus lots more:
Video 5, Being surrounded by other dogs Little Bettie is showing off her skills of resisting Temptations:
Video 6 - Crate training for little Bettie - Handfeeding way to teach your dog to love their crate and everything about it.
Video 7 – teaching a dog to “freeze” on cue to avoid any future problems with close contact and handling.
Video 8 - is our final homemade clip of 3 weeks Bettie spent with us learning to live "Handfeeding" way.
Not many trainers use the lead only as a safety tool by maintaining it loose at all times. Bettie's not pulled on the leash once in 3 weeks here and not had the leash used for any other form of training!
This time we are covering a bit of street walking, stopping, emergency stops and dealing with obstacles and distractions.
Lesson 9 – Distance proofing, Ted the Schnauzer, is demonstrating the vital part of dog training – removing the handler / dog = building up the distance between the two. What can your dog do from a step or two away? What about the other end of the room / field?
So what's all this Handfeeding talk about?

Weekends collections are chargeable. We work on a weekly payment basis. However, please note that outstanding money owed is invoiced monthly and a charge of £5.00 is applied to all invoices raised. Basic and on-going training will be provided to all dogs involved free of charge - after all, there's a reason we are this popular – our pack is our pride and joy! We are a very easy-going and non-regimental group, but please be understanding, and when we turn up to collect your dog booked in to walk or stay with us, you will be charged for the service even if you forget to cancel it for some reason. Usually we do not require long notices, so just keep in touch; we will also be pleased to tell you about your dog’s progress and forward the photographs of our activities to you (one of our staff is a professional dog photographer). Proof of vaccinations including kennel cough is not required as you might choose not to have one, but we want to make you aware that it is up to you to make sure you keep these and other medical issues under control. Please make sure your dog has regular flea and worming treatments so they won’t pass anything on to other dogs. We will be requiring you to fill in an enrolment form that puts us in charge and therefore responsible for your dog, and will be asked to provide us with some details, including your vet’s and insurance, to help us deal with emergencies may such arise. Please note that we do not request that your pet has a health insurance as a compulsory element, but you might choose to purchase the policy as most of the fees arising as a result of medical treatment are extremely high and you will end up with the bill to settle yourself as a result. Please ensure your dog has a safe, soft and secure collar with an up-to-date and legal name tag (we’ll be issuing you with a “Good Boys Dog School” one free of charge). If it becomes necessary, your animal will be taken to a veterinary surgeon. However careful, even the slowest of hounds treads on a piece of glass every now and then. You are responsible for any fees that are reasonably incurred. But we obviously take best care possible for anything to do with safety and wellbeing of your dog, so do not worry too much and trust us with our expertise and experience. Please be aware that in case of an emergency we will contact you first. If we can’t reach you, make sure you provide us with an alternative number we can dial to sort the matters out. And relax – we underwrite ourselves for many even the things that are not covered with our insurance (lost keys cost etc) Some of our students spend up to half of their lives with us, and any signs of illness may become evident when your dog is in our care just as much as when they are with you. So please be sure that when you sign up with us you consider and accept the position that you have trusted us to care for your dog on your behalf and are not going to be pursuing us in any way for the facts of life, state of health or behaviour of your pet in case such change occurs. And the “dirty” part now: We are not the “pavement-walking” or “I don’t do rain”-group – we all go cross-country, mud- sliding, speed-of-light running and dog-paddling on our various walks and swims in and around North and North-West London in any weather.
