Cheryl does a fantastic job with shy dogs and helping them build their confidence! Not only did our dog, Maisy, get so much more comfortable over time but I saw other dogs in the class completely transform over the weeks. Cheryl is wonderful with "training" the owners too, since we have a lot of learning to do in order to train our dogs, too! She explains the process clearly and the classes are very hands on! About a month ago we had to make the painful decision to rehome our dog Bella. Because of Bella’s severe anxieties and fears we didn’t know if a new forever home would even be possible. That’s where Cheryl came in. When she heard about our situation, she stepped in and was quick to act as an advocate for Bella. In a matter of a few days she found a new placement for Bella and gave us confidence that Bella would be well taken care of. It’s evident that Cheryl is passionate about what she does and has the skill and expertise to go with it. Thank you Cheryl for your assistance! More...

Cheryl is absolutely fantastic. She was patient and kind with my dog as well as me. I have a rescue dog from a puppy mill and after two months I never saw my dog she hid all the time and i was at the point of wondering if anything could be done. I called Cheryl and she reassured me and made an appointment to come out quicker than I ever thought. When she came over she gave my dog the personal attention i couldn't get from the books and experience. It's one month later and my shy little dog had completely changed. She wags her tail jumps on the couch and even likes to be pet. Any time i have a question I can still always write or call Cheryl and she promptly responds each time. She is a life saver. My dog is my life and thanks to her now we are sharing our lives together. More...

I have worked with her on several cases and am always impressed by her knowledge and skill. I've seen her successfully rehabilitate many extremely difficult behavior cases. She is a rock star when it comes to working with and addressing shy/fearful and anxious behaviors. She is one of the first trainers I recommend for anyone who needs help with their pup. I brought my @Secondhandhounds foster dog, Abbott, here for a 4-week Confidence Class and I cannot believe how much he has changed in such a short amount of time. He came in terrified of noises, movements and really just people in general. He couldn't cross over the front door threshold and was pancaked nearly the entire first class. Fast forward just two classes later and he's walking in the front door, letting others approach him and walking under legs, through hoops and exploring like a champ. I cannot say enough about Cheryl and her patience with me as I learned how to help Abbott be his most confidence self. If your pup is a little shy, or you're just in need of some guidance on how to be the best dog parent, sign up for a Giffy Dog class ASAP! More...

Cheryl was an enormous help to me, my dog and new upstairs neighbors moving in with their dog. Everyone had had an experience with a reactive dog so we wanted to be as proactive as possible. We all met for a session at Giffy Dog which gave us a benchmark; we left with several recommendations and a new peace of mind. Cheryl’s advice was sage and everything felt exactly right as we proceeded in getting the dogs accustomed to each other. She is a thoughtful and thorough trainer who provided an individual plan for us, giving everyone (doggies included!) the confidence to move forward. My GSD now has a new best friend in the pretty little Am Staff from upstairs! More...

My family and I have been working with Cheryl since we adopted our dog, Hugo in December. He came from a really traumatic environment and was so fearful of people, he's made so much progress these last seven months and every time we leave, he's like a new, more confident dog! Cheryl and her dog Sarah are so patient and kind. Cheryl doesn't just tell you how to fix a behavior but gives you insight into why it's happening and what the dog is feeling. You can tell that she's passionate about what she does!

I also foster through Ruff Start and every foster dog I've brought her way has loved their training (and learned so much) with her.

I started fostering a fearful dog about 6 months ago. He wouldn't let anybody touch him, any new location would scare him, and it was hard to get him out of my car.

After 4 sessions with Cheryl at Giffy Dogs he was taking treats out of strangers' hands, allowing ppl to pet him, and even went through a tunnel! I am amazed at how far this boy has come, and by boy I mean both the dog and the human. I've learned so much about how to work with dogs.

Thank you, Cheryl.

Q&As

I love helping people develop a training plan that works with their lifestyle. I want them to learn how to think about their relationship with their dogs as an opportunity for a deeper, more meaningful bond and to brainstorm solutions to challenges that feel manageable and fun.

My business started and grew organically. Because I had worked in rescue for years with challenging foster dogs, I was asked to start offering classes for dogs that had been adopted through rescue. From there, Giffy dog began, and it has continued to grow since then.

Clients should choose me because I am the right fit for them, but I encourage them to explore other trainers, as well, so they know what's available. I am a certified Karen Pryor trainer who uses humane training methods to motivate dogs to want to work with their human companions. In addition, I use creative strategies to engage dogs and keep them engaged. I empower clients to advocate for their dogs and to work in partnership with their pet dogs. And I am certain we will have fun! Clients who think this sounds like a good fit should schedule an appointment with Giffy dog.
