As someone who has had a tuna sandwich and Ryebread at virtually every major deli in Los Angeles, I consider myself something of an expert on both. I have been driving by Fred's bakery and deli for five years and Have only stopped by once or twice before.  Today, I was in a rush and stopped by to pick up a tuna on Rye.  It may be one of the best tuna on rye sandwiches I have ever had in Los Angeles.  Certainly their Rye bread is the best I've had in LA.  Los Angeles Magazine - are you listening? If you enjoy a good deli rye, stop what you're doing, go to Fred's bakery and deli, and try their rye bread.  It comes right from deli heaven. I called this place at 4 PM on the first night of Rosh Hashanah looking for challah, which all you Jews out there know is more than a little late. They answered, but said they were already closed (of course). However, the guy on the phone was so nice and told me that if I drove over right away, he'd wait for me. Maybe it's the New Yorker in me, but customer service/kindness like that always surprises me and makes my day. I drove right over and two beautiful round challahs were waiting for me. And they look amazing! I'll definitely be back. More...

I think this establishment has become a kosher place. It appears that there may be new owners perhaps -maybe french. So they primarily have bakery goods. We ordered a variety of items all of which seemed to have been baked that same day.The people running the place were very helpful and seemed toknow their products well. They asked if I prefer a box or bag for all my take out items which was a very nice thought and touch. We had the different items over the course of the next few days and they still seemed fresh and tasty.I would highly recommend this place and I think you will like the very good selection and the cleanliness.I believe they also have outdoor seating if you woul like to go there and relax and have your treats right there on the spot. The coffee also seemed to smell excellent even though we did not partake.  Treat yourself and or a guest to this special establishment.Have fun !!!!!! This bakery has been a blessing to go to for many years when I was growing up and going to school at Hamilton High. I literally picked up my cheese bagel breakfast here just about every morning as a high schooler. After moving away in 1987, I did not get a chance to come back to the bakery until last year... the bakery has changed ownership, but the same flavors and baked goods are still available. I introduced my sister to this bakery last month and she's hooked on them now too. What to order?! Well, my main staple is the cheese bagels and Almond horn... Those two baked goods are not duplicated anywhere... and I look for these two specific items every time I'm at a bake shop. The shop is updated and looks like a little cafe. Grab a bagel with cream cheese and lox with capers... that's my fave. I also now order their Chai latte... truly the best IMO. The owner, Avi, is a great guy who's always smiling and accommodating.Definitely worth my time going out of the way to eat my bagel and pick up my stash of baked goodies to haul all the way to Phoenix. Fred's Bakery has been around for years and is a staple in the neighborhood for good reason. Everything here is made to perfection, fresh, and never disappoints. The bagels are amazing; the cheese ones are to die for! All the baked goods and pastries are delicious; my absolute favorite being the Almond Chocolate Horns. It's seventh heaven to my tastebuds! Also, I just have to note that I'm not a fan of anything 'Chai' but Fred's Chai Latte will change any nonbeliever into a fan. I can't come here and not get one. It's downright addictive! I drive all the way from Arizona, just for Fred's Bakery and Avi's (the owner) service with a smile! I kid you not, Fred's is the real deal and totally worth the drive! It's that good. More...

I'll keep coming in for the rye and hope one day to see a proper breakfast menu. More...

Hi, been there once on a Monday. Got 5 different baked goods: chocolate croissant, almond croissant, black & white cookie, kalachis and apricot croissant. Everything was very, very fresh, light and tasty. However, most were too light weight too me. Could have been 1/3 to 1/2 more the weight I feel.Chocolate croissant was really great: perfect "molten crunch", like caramelized. My favorite of all 5.Almond croissant dough was amazing but the "amandine" in it was WAY too little (thin & smaller than an index finger size on each end) vs. Eilat bakery's. More almonds on top would be appreciated.B&W cookie I am not an expert but my wife said it was very good (black part was too sweet to me and B&W glaze was too thin to me).Kalachis was my first-time and was delicious, unique and way heavier than all the other 4 (thus a better deal in my opinion).Apricot croissant was made with non-canned fruit. Dough was great too but I regret the filling used is jam rather than custard or the like, which is more traditional.Overall, very good quality, the job of a pro or, I would dare, a bakery artist. I feel pricing, even for Kosher, is a bit on the high for the weight of these items, at 3.29 to 3.49 a piece. In my opinion, could be 50c lower.Looking forward to tasting more of their products though... More...

I have only tried the rugelach, but OMG is it amazing.  When your teeth touch the outside of this delicious pastry you sense the perfectly cooked slightly crispy exterior.  As they continue their journey into this little morsel of heaven, you are greeted by soft dough interlaced with just the right amount of chocolate that makes your mouth yearn for more.  You force yourself to chew slowly to make sure each one of your tastebuds can share equally in the joy of this delectable treat.  You then ask yourself, "Why have I wasted my time eating rugelach from other places?"The owner is a delight and is justifiably proud of his offerings.  I look forward to trying other freshly baked goods in this magical place. Fantastic bakery! Small interior by most standards, but the food/recipes were great! The new-ish owner told me that they make everything from scratch! My thoughts on some of the food options: Bagels: Though not specifically a "bagel place," they have a small assortment of incredible bagels! I highly recommend the Onion/Garlic/Cheddar. They're fluffy and large, as opposed to most LA places that serve small, dense bagels. The bagels toast well and taste great with cream cheese (at the Bakery or at home)!Black & White Cookie: Now my favorite B&W on the Westside. They're made fresh, but are kept preserved in individual plastic bags. The cookie itself was the perfect softness. Good chocolate and good vanilla (which is uncommon). At first I thought there wasn't enough frosting, but I was wrong. I was able to eat the entire cookie and not feel bloated or go on a sugar rush.Chocolate danish: Also very good! It's like a giant chocolate Rugelach, which they have small ones of. Powdered sugar on the outside, airy middle, and chocolate all throughout.  Hamantaschen: They have the "normal" flavors, like cherry, apricot, prune, and poppy seed, but I'd like to seem them try an original flavor every new and again. Perhaps blueberry or strawberry, or a mix of two things.Mini sprinkled cookies: they don't look super impressive, but they taste great, and aren't overly-buttery or overly-sugary. More...

Enjoyed a pastrami sandwich with homemade potato salad and pickle, a coffee, and a German pastry along with charming and insightful conversation from manager Avi. He told me they make the best bagels he's ever had and he's been going there since he was a child, almost 30 years. Oh my goodness... I don't know what they do to these bagels, but they're perfect!  After I toasted my cheese and onion bagel, I smeared on my cream cheese and quickly drifted off into heaven. The outside was crisp with that little bit of fried cheese and the inside was warm, soft and chewy. I've had cheese bagels and bialis but this was something else!  Everyone was raving about the bagels at the brunch. I was trying to eat healthy at that time and I threw caution to the wind and ate a second bagel!! Also super delicious at Fred's, the Marble Rye Bread, rugelach cookies (I usually get a couple dozen because they vanish quickly) and the Chocolate Babka. The decor is simple and modest.
