Unreliable service. First we were given a specific day, then got asked for it to be moved on the day to a clean to another. Did this without complaint. Was told there would be backup cleaners available should main cleaner not be able to attend as part of their sales pitch Despite these promises two weeks in a row for different excuses our cleaner was unable to attend. No offer of a replacement person was given. We were not notified until the day the clean was due to occur. She had no interest in finding a solution for messing us about twice. The "extra help" organised by Michaela and delivered by the wonderful Lisa just saved my life, frankly. My regular cleaner was away for a month and because I have a few (well, quite a few) health issues, I do need that sort of help and I can't thank both these ladies enough for being the angels I needed. Not only does Moira ensure there is consistency as to who cooks for him she also goes out of her way to pop in to see him if she is seeing other clients where he lives. Moira tonge is the local franchise owner , ive worked with her for 2 years, she takes great care of all her home helps and ensures a very high standard. Each home help is CRB checked and will carry out risk assesment in each home . They also will be aware of contact procedure/ contigency plan , particularly where the service is provided for an eldery or vunerable client.
We are all familiar with the push and pull feeling around making a new devision or adjustment . We mantain the " i can cope , this is what defines me , i do and it gives me purpose , everyone else manages beautifully and im expected to match that , im a woman ...this is whst people expect of me , or im a man and this is the expression of my devoted / gratitude/ indebtedness to my wife .
In a world which validates us , measures our acheivement against an unrealistic backdrop of a minority group, (maybe our neighbours , those we meet in the playground or on watford hight street )who are championed and defined by a seemly superhuman capacity to live out neatly ordered and comfortable lives evidenced by neatly ordered homes , high acheiving children, ordered finances and thriving community relations ....with supporting family around and a plan ready in timely fashion to ensure that in the advent of a new baby arriving or any elderly relation ready to make the shift from indepentant to dependant living ...there is an apathy , a sense that everything is as it should be. Everyneed is accounted for. Every box is ticked .
Its no wonder we find it do hard to ask for help. Unless evidence reveals a significant need for intervention , there is no help . And when it comes , through publuc service ...the joy and relieve is literally the blessing and the curse ." Your next on my list " the assesment is made , and the tick in the box is marked with a couple of week "
What then for the lady who is recently bereaved, imobile and house bound
The lady who is ajdsting to her hip operation revovery whilst managing the daily challenge of the changing demands of husband with vasular dementure
The exhausyed Mum of 4 who not only is not only determined to support some ver real life difficulties in such a way that is beyond what the school can offer but also though qualifies with husband as unfit for work , they BOTH hold down medical jobs and commit to making the lives of those better
What about the retired couple we visit , the mum well into her 70's who is so crippled with arthristic than she struggles to get down stairs . I help her while she sits as advocate and councellor for people neefeing help through C AB , and campaigns for social justice and sits on neigbour hood watch
Then a beautiful couple in Hutchings lodge Ricky ...who are literally the life and soul to all the other residents . This lady is so poorly and afraid as still doesnt have a diagnosis...but every single day she gets to her cross stitch and makes a little bit of the bedspread that she will send to her newest grandaughter in new zealand.
These people asked for help . Because as we clean the loos and change befs and help them prepare a dinner.and rush off to post a letter ..or just sit and talk about their worries their joys their concerns....for the main goal that they then have time to spend on all the things that are precious to them.
As trivial as it is to you or me , wheather it gets the tick off the list or in a wordly view
This is just extra help ..so that the things that bring joy are possible again .

Extra Help have provided an outstanding service to me and my family, they provide a full housekeeping service to us as well as providing commercial premise cleaning. The team are lovely and Emily who runs the business is reliable, approachable and worth her weight in gold to ensure that if for any reason a team member can not attend a replacement will be provided. This in itself is worth paying the slight bit more than sourcing each service provider individually and having to keep track of multiple people and being left in the lurch should there be sickness or holidays. Heather and her team were recommended to us when we were looking for cleaners to undertake a full clean of a chapel following the renewal of the roof covering. Heather was very prompt in attending and provided a quote the same day. How long have you been in business?
Extra Help was born ten years ago in Plymouth. Since then we have grown to approximately 35 locations across the UK. This includes Rickmansworth, Watford and the surrounding areas. We are also extremely proud to be Friends of Dementia, which is a subject very close to my heart.
Do you bring your own equipment and supplies?
Usually clients prefer us to use their own preferred cleaning supplies and equipment, but if a client does need us to bring our own supplies, then this can be discussed when we meet.
What do you love most about your job?
I love helping people - simple as that! I see Extra Help as an extension of me and what I love to do and it is of paramount importance that everyone is happy with the work that we do. I take pride that our work is carried out to the highest standard, but carried out with a smile as well! Nothing gives me greater satisfaction than to see a job done well.
Why should our clients choose you?
I think we're unique - literally a one-stop shop for all of your at-home services required. Our list of services is not exhaustive and if there's something that's not on the list that you need help with, then we will do our utmost to try to make sure that the job required gets done!
What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
All of our wonderful team are strictly following Government Guidelines in relation to Covid-19. This includes practicing social distancing - some clients prefer to leave the house as the Home Help arrive, or remain in another room whilst our Home Help is there. All Team Members will wear gloves and a mask for the duration of the client visit. In additional, everyone carries a letter with them confirming full details of their role within Extra Help.
House Cleaning
We cover all aspects of house cleaning - this can be regular house cleaning, end of tenancy or move-out cleaning, or deep / spring cleaning.
Decluttering
Gardening
We can assist with the general upkeep of your garden, including weeding / pruning, lawn mowing, jet-washing of patio, and general tidying of your garden, painting /creosoting of fences.
Shopping / Collection Service
We can assist with your food shopping / collecting of your shopping or, for example, if you require something collected from a shop and are unable to go yourself. We can either accompany you to the shop, or go on your behalf.
Meal Preparation
We can assist with preparing meals for you. This can be the making of fresh meals for cooking that day, or we can make meals which can be frozen for later use.
Ironing and Laundry
We can provide an ironing service (in-house) and take care of your laundry (including changing bed linen).
General Housekeeping Services
We cover all aspects of housekeeping services, no matter how small.
