After gaining a lot of weight and becoming very unfit because of a prolonged illness I was extremely anxious about starting to exercise again. I found Ian to be really understanding and encouraging which gave me the confidence to start and then to carry on even when it's been hard work! He has a great depth of knowledge of health, nutrition and fitness so I feel assured I'm in good hands, both starting out and progressing. He helped me to identify my aims and work out an achievable path to them. I have never found him to be critical or judgemental, just wholly supportive, enthusiastic and great company. I definitely recommend Dr Ian Martin as a personal trainer. More...

I was unable to run further than 12k without experiencing knee pain. Following an exercise prescription from Ian, I am now much stronger and do not suffer from pain when I run. I am currently training for my first marathon following a bespoke training programme and nutrition plan designed by Ian. Ian is very professional, supportive, motivating, encouraging and provides honest feedback. He varies my programme according to my performance keeping my training challenging, rewarding and fun. Listen to what Ian says, follow his advice and you will see results. What more could you ask from a personal trainer and exercise specialist? I highly recommend Ian to anyone who values their health and fitness. More...

Have been trained by Ian for a few months now and can really tell the difference. I hate mornings and I hate exercise but Ian makes the sessions good fun and they seem manageable (until the next day! ). You only push yourself as much as you are able but Ian always makes you find that little bit extra.

Ian really delivers a fantastic service and has a very professional approach. I've tried all sorts of keep fit classes but Ian has been, by far, the most effective.

The workout sessions are tailored to your needs and abilities so you really don't feel like you're having 'just another agonising workout'
The results, for me, speak for themselves and it's definitely worth the investment. Ian has really helped me to get back to fitness after having my son. I attended the speed sessions which he delivered throughout the winter. These sessions were varied and fun despite being very challenging. Ian has been extremely motivating and encouraging, and a big influence in improving my confidence to get back to fitness. Yet, he's also sympathetic to my difficulties in juggling exercise with work and family commitments. More...

At 70 years of age, recovering from radiotherapy for prostate cancer, an element of apathy had set in with me, coupled to weight gained with idleness. A realisation that I needed to do something about this led me to Ian Martin….
A comprehensive initial interview gave me an indication of what I needed to do and, hopefully, gave Ian an indication of what I might be able to tolerate. Agreeing to a set of 30 sessions gave me the initial impetus to 'go for it'! From the start Ian's guidance led me through diet (cut out the 'naughty' foods!), identification of weak areas and a basic set of 'fitness' (lack of!) parameters. With 3 one-hour sessions per week at the start, with steadily increasing levels of exertion over time, I was never put under undue stress, just gentle progress and education throughout. Yes, I was 'tested' throughout the sessions but felt the benefits almost straight away. A steady decrease in weight and a steady increase in strength and flexibility all coupled to a regime that monitored several scientific parameters at regular intervals gave me the confidence that it was working! As fitness improved I found I was taking other exercise by myself, on top of the sessions with Ian.
The main things I gained from Ian were guidance, motivation and encouragement. Some of this was subliminal…. Like how I found myself buying my first 'real' training shoes at 70 years of age!
Ian is a personable young man (young compared to me that is!) and I would encourage anyone, young or old, to make use of his services - it's worthwhile and recommended.
Just do it! More...

Q&As

I work closely with clients to understand their individual needs and requirements. Everyone is unique and I believe a personal trainer should focus on the personal by customising training and nutrition plans specifically to each client. Talking through progress and working through feelings and attitudes to exercise and diet is as important as following the plans themselves.

Behaviour change. Nothing else works in the long term. I use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques to help shift attitudes to exercise and nutrition so that you can build and keep the body of your dreams.

I love helping people. My goal with each client is to teach them how to become their own personal trainer.

My inspiration to start my personal training business was a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes in 2011. Exercise, healthy eating and managing stress were crucial components of managing my condition and helping me go on to achieve a life-time goal of running a sub-3 hour marathon at age 48. I believe exercise, nutrition and wellbeing are the keys for everyone to improve their health, increase their fitness and achieve their goals.

I am highly-qualified (PhD, MSc, PgDip. BA (Hons), L5 Nutritionist, L4 Obesity and Diabetes Specialist, L3 Exercise Referral Specialist, L3 Personal trainer) personable and experienced. See my website for some recent unbiased client reviews. Book a consultation for £30 and judge for yourself.
