I am 74 years old and trying to restart a consulting/expert witness business and needed a head shot for a new web page. It needed to show that I was a pleasant, energetic, experienced consultant that would play well to a jury. I chose Doug after perusing local photographers’ webpages. His work looked more organic and less posed than most and I liked the way he framed the shots. From the first contact, it was clear that he was very much a laid-back Southern California type guy. I showed up with three outfits and started with the suit and tie. He then took me out on the streets of Santa Barbara where he took all the shots. The city is photogenic on its own so it added an almost fantasy like element to each shot. He used a telephoto lens so he was never physically close and this distance allowed me to act normal, standing, walking and moving my hands naturally. He did not actually tell me how to pose, just suggesting that I “be myself” with the occasional admonishment to keep my head up or forward. He did the same thing for each of the different clothing looks. Upon receiving the proofs, I was exceedingly pleased with the range of expression he was able to capture during such a short shoot. I sent the entire proof list to my web page designers (a Google group) and they were very pleased, indicating that was one of the best head shots they had ever seen. In addition to the “professional” head shots, the other outfits yielded numerous images that will be used for social media and family pictures. I always felt very comfortable and he was more than willing to take any suggestion that I had, some of which worked out very well. I was impressed enough to set up additional shoots for art pictures and photos of my wife. Doug is a tremendous photographer. He is so genuine, and it shows in his work. We hired him for our corporate "headshots", and our goal was to do something more creative: no ugly elementary-school backdrops, no standard poses, we wanted natural, outdoor scenery with headshots that were relaxed and professional. I've needed new headshots five different times over the past twenty years. I've never felt so grounded and at ease as I was with Doug. Also, I have not received so many good shots that it was difficult narrowing down which photos to use.

Doug is definitely a master of light and he knows when he gets a great shot right when he gets it. You can see him light up.

He wisely asked what makes me feel relaxed and grounded and I told him it's when I have bare feet. He asked, "Want to try some shots barefoot?" I did and it worked so well. Then, whenever Doug sensed I was getting a little stiff he guided me through a few simple movements (like surfing) that had me instantly loosen up and reconnect to the authentic me.
