Alexandra has been absolutely amazing with training our dog to be alone! She has a very calming presence and we're seeing progress after only one week.

Alexandra left my house a few hours ago and I feel compelled to write a review right away.Context: We adopted a retired racing greyhound two weeks ago. She's a great dog, but doesn't know any basic obedience / doesn't have a ton of confidence. She was also exhibiting signs of isolation distress/separation anxiety. We have yet to leave her alone for more than 10 minutes for fear that her anxiety could get worse. We weren't sure how early to start her on training because she's still adjusting to our home (and life off the track after two foster homes) but we figured we should start shaping the right behaviors right away.Alexandra and I talked on the phone on Friday and I took some time to mull it over. I called her back on Sunday to set up a session that next week. I actually had a different trainer come in before Alexandra, and that other trainer charged me $300 to review paperwork with no training in the session--a waste.Alexandra was the complete opposite of the other trainer. She got straight to work - and I mean as soon as she came in, she started working with my dog to gauge her level and what approach we would use for training. As she assessed my dog, she changed her approach based on what would work best for my dog-and it worked. Within one hour, she helped us train our dog to do "down" and "sit". This is a huge deal, as greyhounds notoriously do not sit.Additionally, we told Alexandra we wanted to focus on curbing her separation anxiety. Alexandra offered to stay for extra time than we had allotted to work on doggie decompression and alone training. After reading many different articles/books on separation anxiety, I felt I needed more direction and a better approach. Alexandra showed me how to build my dog's confidence being alone in the house while we are still there (doggie decompression) and how to desensitize/condition a calm response to us leaving the house (alone training). Separation Anxiety is a tough behavior to crack and Alexandra's method makes it manageable if you don't have hours in your day to devote to decompression/training.I would highly recommend Alexandra's services. I was very skeptical myself reading the other reviews that I would see a change in one session, but I truly did. At no point did she promise that, but it was fulfilled anyway. Her rates are an absolute steal. No brainer! More...

I cannot express my gratitude enough for all the help that Alexandra at Dog Savvy gave our puppy, my husband, and I! After having our puppy for a couple months he began developing worse and worse separation anxiety. While we took some time off work when we got him, we hadn't anticipated this, and both had to leave for work weekday mornings. We felt AWFUL hearing him cry and yell for us. After a month of trying to deal with it on our own we realized it wasn't going to get better without professional help. I was looking for a dog trainer that only used positive training methods and stumbled upon Dog Savvy. Seeing how many other people had gone to them specifically for separation anxiety got my attention and reading through their website about the positive, yet scientific approach Alexandra takes sold me. We did one in person training session to understand what my husband and I had to do for our homework. Alexandra's calm demeanor was excellent for working with a dog who was getting so worked up. We learned about doggie decompression and alone training. My husband wasn't so sure at first, but the more we practiced the training in the weeks to follow, the more we saw incredible results. After this, Alexandra even helped us out when we needed some extra help in making sure Accio wasn't going to relapse before we progressed enough in our training, which was above and beyond anything we could have expected.I don't think our dog will ever fully enjoy us leaving, haha, but it is night and day in how well he reacts now! I'm SO glad we called Alexandra when we did and would call her back for any future dog training needs! More...

We adopted a 3 year old German Shepherd who clearly had some trouble with other dogs in her previous life. She was instantly triggered by seeing dogs outside, going right into full attack mode. Since we live in an apartment in a dog-friendly part of town, our dog's pees and poops required her to chill the f out. After trying a few trainers who promised To Fix The Problem In JUST...ONE...VISIT, we called Lexi, who promised that getting our pup reorganized was going to take a lot of effort, care, and time. Lexi's not only realistic about what your dog needs, she's strategic: there are no quick fixes, especially with rescue dogs. The program Lexi developed for our dog included in-home 'spot training' and walks through the neighborhood, getting the dog to pay attention to us instead of whatever's around the corner. Lexi approached both with an incredible combination of pup-lover intuition and clearly mastered doggy science; we learned that the adrenaline boost from a dog encounter can last up to six days in her system, so whatever your dog's mad about now could have been from last week. The other prescriptive training Lexi had was something called BAT (Behavioral Adjustment Training). This entailed her bringing along a second trainer with a second dog (the chillest and most zen husky you've ever seen) to get our dog used to another in a controlled environment. By helping to establish our dog's limits to stimuli, we were able to know exactly the areas she needed improvement. We completed our first six-pack of sessions and couldn't be happier with the results. Our dog isn't 'magically fixed', but the progress she's shown is nothing short of unreal. She calms down when seeing other dogs and often decides to just move along. We held our breath every time we took her our on a walk before, but now she's going up to Griffith Park and, as you can see on her face, she's extremely stoked about it. I'd recommend Lexi for all ages of dog and also all experience levels of dog-owner. While my wife grew up with Shepherds, this is my first dog, so I was even more anxious about how to properly train her. Lexi demonstrates spectacular confidence and knowledge: no matter what your dog is going through, she'll help her (and you) through it. Couldn't recommend more. More...

We had a great experience with Alexandra. She was very accommodating to see us in last minute and she gave us great suggestions even before the training. Our dog was 5 months old when we got her, and within a few days she started having serious anxiety issues when left alone or in the crate. After multiple sleepless nights, Alexandra was a life saver with her suggestions on how to train her to be alone. She was also having issues with jumping on other dogs or people during walks. After using Alexandra's techniques for a few weeks, now she is at a point where she sits calmly while other dogs/people walk by. The main takeaway for us was to learn how the dog thinks and apply the same logic to different situations. It is based on positive reinforcement, so it requires patience and consistency, but it worked in our case. Definitely recommended. More...

Alexandra is the best! Our Australian Cattle Dog, Levi, came to us from a home that did not socialize him, nor really train him beyond the basics, and we found ourselves with a pup that clearly did not know how to exist in a city like Los Angeles. We are so, so grateful a friend recommended her; as soon as our first session was over, we felt more confident taking him out in public, and more importantly, we learned the skills to build Levi's confidence. After 5 sessions, we can say with certainty that our once timid, handsome boy is a completely different dog (he's still handsome! ) Using patience, positive reinforcement, and behavioral science to explain not just the what and how, but the why, Alexandra taught our family fun, interactive activities that strengthened our bond and achieved desired results. She even helped our 10yr old Boston learn a thing or two! We also love that she follows up sessions by sending us videos that reinforce what we just learned. Two paws up, all the way. More...

Being a first time dog/puppy owner, I was tremendously worried about the beginning stages and training my dog the right way. Fortunately, we found Lexie and she was everything we were looking for and more in a dog trainer. Being first-time puppy owners we were clueless, lost and had issues with separation anxiety, potty training and pretty much all the basics. She came over for our initial consultation, was patient and paid incredible attention to our little pup, Gus, so we decided to go through with her program. She molded her program specifically for Gus, was very accommodating and worked on our schedule and even holding sessions in our apartment. Almost instantly Gus improved in all aspects without using any sort of negative reinforcement or discipline. We were blown away with the progress he was making. The separation anxiety is almost non-existent and she designed a great system for our potty training after examining the layout of our apartment. Gus only took a few weeks to be house-trained after working with Lexie's lesson. Our biggest concern about enrolling our puppy into a private training program was that he wasn't going to receive the proper social skills that are crucial during the beginning stages. Lexie helped with this by bringing other puppies over to give great one on one social experience to our puppy especially since our little guy wasn't fully vaccinated and could not go outside. Gus picked up on social cues incredibly fast and I can honestly say that the social training has set my dog up for success. I now bring him to my dog friendly office and he socializes with the other dogs like a pro!I couldn't be happier about the results after our six week program. We continue to use the training games that she has taught us and the progress speaks for itself. Lexie provides a great alternative way of training your dog without using any form of discipline, which is incredible after hearing about how other people trained their dogs (yelling, hitting, aggression and many forms of punishment). I highly recommend her program, especially if you want great results in the most humane way. She went above and beyond to set Gus up for success (not to mention she even found us a playdate one block away from our apartment for our little guy to help with his socialization). Despite our six-week program ending, she's kindly offered to make herself available if we have any questions or need advice. We can't say enough good things about this program and highly recommend Dog Savvy to any and all new dog owners like myself! More...

I could not be more grateful for Lexi! I adopted a cute as can be rescue who started showing signs of dog aggression a few days after she came home. After a few months of trying to calm her down on my own, I started looking for a trainer that would work with an aggressive dog using positive training techniques. Eventually, I found Dog Savvy and was stunned by how much everyone seemed to love and trust Lexi. I called her practically in tears, sure I was going to have to re-home my dog if she couldn't help us. After our initial session, I already felt so much more confident in helping my dog stay calm on walks. Lexi even let us record the session so that we could follow the steps on our own after she left. After just a couple of months, I've already started to see major changes in my dog's reactions and confidence around other dogs and she's now had a few successful dog introductions! Her methods are simple, clear, and enjoyable for me and my pup. Lexi even arranged pupdates for us with other dogs and clients to help the dogs learn to socialize appropriately. Lexi goes above and beyond to help her clients and it doesn't hurt that my dog LOVES her. More...

Lexi is hands down a miracle worker! We were having issues with our 64lbs Lab/Pit mix because she's very strong and high spirited. Sometimes this took the shape of pulling us during our entire walk, other times she would run around like a wild animal in our apt and in the worst case scenarios she'd get super agressive towards other dogs. Lexi's simple and positive training methods flipped the way we thought about dealing with our dogs "short comings", instead she taught us to use them as opportunities to reward behavior. Her methods are so simple it's makes you question why you didn't think of it sooner! They work and are actually fun to use because the narrative with our dog is a positive one now. There are no more punishments, yelling out of frustration or fearful encounters with other dogs. Lexi's positive reinforcement techniques only allow space for our dog to be praised and rewarded. After our 1st session we saw such a dramatic shift in our dogs behavior we decided to sign up for another series of 5 sessions, which I would highly recommend. This enabled us to tackle isolated issues during each session, then combine all those individual techniques to create a new positive behavior. This whole experience has made her a better dog and us better parents. Our walks are now something to look forward to, she actually has started making "friends" with other dogs in the building and she feels more connected to us now. We joke with friends that Lexi provided training for our dog but in the process improved our relationship as a couple because we no longer have tension in the household! We couldn't recommend Dog Savvy with higher praise. Lexi is simply amazing at what she does!!! More...

Having dogs all my life, I have an innate love for dogs and all animals. When I decided to adopt Bowie, a 2 or 3 year old terrier mix, I knew that it would require a lot of love, time, and dedication, but I wasn’t totally prepared for just how many behavioral nuances my new pup would have. Bowie came with anxieties surrounding strangers and other dogs, as well as what I learned to refer to as “guarding behavior” when people enter the house. Lexi has helped to understand Bowie’s complex nature on a deeper level and to define and label his behavior in understandable and digestible language. Lexi’s method of training is understanding and undeniably positive. Going into training I was worried that it would be scolding or fear-based, but Lexi has shown me time and again that patience and positivity always wins when training or interacting with your dog.So far we have worked on behavior modification at large: creating calm states of mind inside and outside the home, learning games to stimulate and train, understanding leash training and reactivity, and combating his guarding behavior. Bowie has improved regarding seeing other dogs and people when we’re out. Bowie will always have an undefined past, but with Lexi’s help, I think we can create a happy and carefree world for Bowie where interacting with strangers and other dogs can be a fun activity. As a first time dog owner, and doing it on my own, I had zero confidence. Lexi does not make any grandiose promises. She understands and comforts you with the fact that dogs are canines. Lexi provides you with so many great and accessible tools, not one magical solve-all. The practicality she approaches each problem with is refreshing and comforting, and she assists you with identifying and labeling behavior. Max has shown his potential by working with Lexi. I have just been back in England for 3 weeks and my puppy was looked after & trained by Alexandra at our home in Los Angeles.

I really want to recommend her to everyone!

When I say looked after, I mean really looked after- thoughtfully putting Moose first, teaching him everything we asked, going above and beyond with his lessons. We call her the Fairy Godmother as she comes into our puppy's life and really makes him feel good. The quality of training is better than any we have had before with Moose. Alexandra has taken a real interest in our puppy's well being and been there for us/him if we needed any dog related help. His progress is all down to her and he is a lovely, smart and well trained pup.

We really did not need to worry while we were in a different country- seeing videos of his training while away and knowing he was out at the beach, on walks, at the dog park, playing with dog friends etc. Having the time of his life!

Fantastic dog trainer in LA! Reliable, trustworthy, thoughtful, caring, responsible and damn right skilled at her job. We'll be calling on her for training needs as much as possible and recommending her again and again and again.Thank you for your wonderful help.

I have nothing but positive things to say about Lexie and Dog Savvy LA.

As someone who grew up with dogs, I felt confident and ready to train my newly adopted 2 year old german shepherd mix, but boy did he come with some baggage. Our pup, though loving, has lots of energy and a few major behavioral problems including isolation distress and reactivity to other dogs - which began to wear me and boyfriend down as new dog owners.

We were stuck between a rock and a hard place - our dog would react and bark/lunge at other dogs when out in the community, which made it hard for us to bring him with us anywhere, but when left alone he became very anxious and barked for hours on end.

We had unsuccessfully worked with other trainers in the past, but thankfully met Lexie before losing our patience altogether. We began participating in both group and personal training classes with Lexie about 6 weeks ago and noted major improvements right from the start! After a personal visit to our home, we learned from Lexie that previous trainers had incorrectly diagnosed our dog with separation anxiety vs isolation distress, which therefore made our approach to training all wrong. It is still a work in progress, but now when we leave our home our dog is much more relaxed, and we have slowly worked up to about 10 minutes of leaving without our dog showing any signs of distress (this is a huge accomplishment for him). In addition, ever since using Lexie's feed for orientation approach to dog reactivity, we no longer need a prong collar to walk our dog and have significantly reduced stress on social outings in the community overall.

I would highly recommend Dog Savvy to any new dog owner, or even older dogs/owners with behavioral issues, as I have seen improvements from both perspectives working with her. She is professional, patient, and committed to both you and your dog's success.

I rescued a year old Great Dane puppy in December and having grown up with Great Danes in the past I knew what I was getting into. Not so much. Previously I was able to train my pups from an early age. I soon began to realize that my pup had major separation anxiety and had picked up adverse leash reactivity. He is 100 pounds and I am embarrassed to say I just had no control over this boy. I trained him to sit, stay etc. all the basics which went well but the sep anxiety was causing me to adjust my life in such a way that I could no longer cope with him. My previous trainer just didn't work out and then along came Lexi. We had a few sessions in which I was so impressed with her demeanor and how fast my pup fell in love with her. We also had a 'traincation' and I came home to a completely different dog. I still have a lot of work to do with him myself (anyone knows one has to train the owner and not just the dog). Lexi's help made all the difference and my pup is improving daily. Her training system is very unusual and does not employ instruction demands and commands, but a gentle lead so the dog makes it's own, correct decisions. I highly recommend Lexi to anyone that has a dog with anxiety. And of course she does so much more. I was at my wits end. Alexandra is awesome. For a long time, my wife and I felt completely lost with our rescue Pitbull Peanut who had serious separation anxiety and stranger aggression.  Alexandra has helped us find ways to live our lives and at the same time help our dog feel more comfortable by giving us the tools to anticipate her triggers, calm her down when she goes over threshold and desensitize for the next time. A year later, Peanut isn't perfect by any means but even so, knowing that we're working toward achievable goals and seeing her improve day by day has been one of the most rewarding things I've ever done and my wife and I have Alexandra to thank for that. Lexi is fantastic. She stayed at our house while we were out of town and did a week of training with our two rescue dogs. We came home to a massive improvement . The dogs loved her, she was highly professional, always on time, trustworthy, and had great follow-up. Most importantly, it was all positive reinforcement training, and it really worked. Cannot recommend her enough. Much better than just boarding them somewhere while traveling... Thank you. More...

Alexandra is a wonderful trainer! Her approach is simple to understand and our dog Coco LOVES it. He gets to eat a bunch of yummy treats and doesn’t realize he’s learning a lot. Alexandra came to our home to assess Coco and even showed us some games to play with him before we signed up for training. I can tell she genuinely loves what she does and is so kind to the dogs she’s training. She’s also very patient with the humans! More...

Alexandra at Dog Savvy helped me get a handle on what to do with my rescue dog who was acting aggressively when guests came to the house. She sometimes growled when I tried to take something away from her, too (like a toy or bone). She's a big girl, an Old English Mastiff, so it was scary. We worked with her every day using the exercises that Alexandra shared with us and now she has totally calmed down - it's like night and day! Thank you, Alexandra! More...

Alexandra is a wonderful trainer! After one class, and then following her instructions and suggestions, I saw a distinct improvement when walking my whippet, Tully. He is much more attentive to me and my commands, and is relaxing more into a new environment after our move to Los Angeles. I'm having a lot of fun working with him, and I think he is having fun, too. I look forward to going back to class and working with Alexandra to help him adjust to this new life style. More...

My dog Bilbo and I have been attending Lexis training classes for a few weeks and its the best decision I could have made! She is extremely patient and understanding and will work with you wherever you are at. I had a lot of anxiety initially because Bilbo is reactive to other dogs but just a few weeks in, Bilbo is able to walk really close to other dogs and not even pay attention to them. Bilbo is a much happier dog now and we are making so much progress every single week. Thanks Lexi! More...

Alexandra has been helping us with our little terrier mix  Archie, we decided we needed help when we tried to walk him and he would become extremely reactive whenever he saw another dog he would go crazy lunging and barking. With just a few sessions Alex has given us the tools to help Archie get over his issues  using positive reinforcement and teaching us how to be good dog parents showing us techniques that really have worked  quickly. Alexandra has a lovely calming demeanor and we all enjoy her visits, a really positive and rewarding experience all around. Highly recommended.UPDATE! We have been continuing with the methods Alexandra taught us and Archie has come a long way he has really flourished with these techniques and has become a much better doggy citizen! More...

Q&As

My favorite part of my work is when dog parents see their dog in action during training and realize just how smart their dog is!

I'm a passionate dog lover who is devoted to helping dog owners get the most out of their relationship with their dog!

I've worked with every breed and temperament of dog over the past 15 years and have been training dogs professionally in the greater Los Angeles area since 2014.

I have a proven track record and have helped many people reclaim their lives after struggling for years with behavior issues. I've also helped many people to easily and joyfully train their puppies to become polite adult dogs that know how to behave in a variety of circumstances and settings.

I've trained under World Champion Dog Trainer, Susan Garrett, completing both her Recallers and Puppy Peaks programs. I use her "Positive Is Not Permissive" approach to positive reinforcement dog training, using games of choice to teach dogs what behaviors are acceptable and which are not. This approach is the most innovative and effective approach to dog training available today and I love sharing the methodology!

I'm courteous, professional, and go the extra mile to help my clients. I also offer the most up-to-date, science-based, dog training methodology available today.
