Ruhina Surendran (LEED AP) has a Masters in Landscape Architecture and a Bachelors in Civil Engineering. She brings 20 years of experience in design and project management. She has worked with over a dozen architectural and engineering firms since 1995, including world famous landscape architecture firms such as SWA Group (Houston), Oikos (India) and Buro Dieterich Landschaftsarchitect (Germany).

What do you love most about your job?
Being able to see how design improves client's lives, connects one with nature and fully utilize your home.
What inspired you to start your own business?
During my undergraduate civil engineering years, I was sure I wanted to become a landscape architect one day. I was fortunate to have worked at one of the best landscape architecture firms in India, Oikos, where I developed a love for design, planting plans and construction drawings.
I completed my Master's in Landscape Architecture at The Ohio State University and moved to the warmer city of Houston in 1999. The summer of 1998 was very adventerous, with an internship in Berlin, Germany where I saw a great deal of European design. Since then I've worked for several Landscape Architecture firms on public, corporate, educational and residential projects.
From 2003 onwards my career took a turn toward project management and construction administration. I was hired as In-house Architect for a bio-medical company where I managed and designed in-house renovations, installations and on-going maintenance projects.
In February 2010, DesignIntent was born, as a way to channel my design energy and produce landscaped places that people enjoy, are low-maintenance and yet very beautiful! Since then we have designed and installed more than 50 projects - commercial, residential, apartment complexes and streetscapes.

Because my inter-disciplinary background brings a fresh perspective, and I am able to extend the architect or contractor's vision into the landscape. I also know several vendors, contractors, specialty builders and nurseries that are able to complete the job successfully!
