Nicola aka Design Penguin listened to our vague ideas about what we wanted for our nursery crystallised them and came back with beautiful drawings and a wonderful colour pallette, perfect for a nursery, but non specific enough to take the room through to another use when and if the baby moves to a bigger room. We ran out of time and budget for some of the built in cupboard work, including a built in changing station, but that was our call and no reflection on Nicola - they were great ideas, with detailed designs and samples provided. What’s your interior design process?
For the full interior design service, I spend a good couple of hours with you to refine the brief, and ask lots of questions about style, what is to stay, what is to go, your hopes and dreams for the space and how you use it. Every milimetre of your rooms is measured to help reveal the full potential of your space. Together we will look at images from magazines, the web, catalogues, colour charts, samples of fabrics and wallpapers and I'll ask you to tell me what you like, what you don't, and why. This gives me a 'yes' image and a 'no' image in my minds when designing and selecting items. After a couple of weeks you can expect a check in meeting where we'll go through initial layouts, concepts, drawings and samples. Your feedback at this stage is vital so that the final designs are the best they can be.

Design Penguin works with your style and extends it, to show you new finishes and furnishings you may not have considered before. Its your home and it should reflect your style, personality and taste.
What do you love most about your job?
Happy clients, when you see the designs or the end result. And looking at beautiful things all day.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I wanted to do something I love, something tangible. And help every day people to have a better home. Interior design doesn't have to be for the rich and famous, those with a country pile or penthouse. Everyone's home can benefit from fresh eyes and a little love.
