Regarding payroll, I want to share my experience with payroll services: I used 3 different payroll services in my 20 years in DC. I started with Paychex (one of the biggest) and after about 5 years was convinced to switch to ADP - both large national companies. ADP is the largest payroll processor in the country and my experience with them was a nightmare of mistakes, phone calls and problems. I switched to a local MD company, recommended to me by my accountant about 5 years ago and what a difference. The company is Payce Payroll and (unlike ADP) they gave me a personal liaison for all my processing and questions. She helps me with any question and walks me through my annual Workman's comp audit (from my insurance company) and supplies all the figures, which was always a nightmare with ADP. I highly recommend Payce if you need payroll service. I used to do my own payroll when I was a MD employer, but now in DC I have employees who live in MD, DC and VA and have to do quarterly filing for all three plus Federal - so Payce has been a lifesaver for me. DC regularly screws up and sends me notices that have to be addressed, and all i do is forward them to Payce, and they handle it.
