I would describe Dr. Witchel's brand of psychotherapy as the "art of becoming a Human Being". If you are looking for a "quick-fix" or "a few new coping skills to get by", then his style is not for you. Dr. Witchel's style goes well beyond the simple treatment of neurotic issues, but rather attempts to address the root of the problems of daily living. Many counselors, psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists treat issues such as depression, explosive behavior, chronic anxiety, and drug/alcohol problems as a disease. It is as if these reactions/behaviors are the cause and chaotic, confusing, purposeless lives are the symptom. Dr. Witchel takes a different approach. Life style, losses, exposure to trauma, and unhealthy relationships (to name a few) are the issues that lead to symptoms of issues such as depression, anxiety, explosive-behavior, D/A use. How do I know this? Admittedly, I have never been a patient under his care. I have been lucky enough to have been a student of this outstanding counselor educator/practitioner. In many ways, being a student of his was also therapy for me. He greatly helped me to increase my awareness of choices that I never knew I was making. Also, he created an environment where I could explore how my past is part of the larger picture that influences what I think, feel, and do in the present. Dr. Witchel applies the very interventions he teaches and employs in his brand of psychotherapy to his own life. How many psychiatrist consume the medications they prescribe? I highly recommend this psychotherapist/educator to those who are ready and interested in embarking on a life-changing journey that will result in an enriched/purpose filled life rather than take away your anxiety, depression, anger for a few months.
