What makes a great website?
For me a great website should be clear (no unnecessary clutter), easy to navigate and hold the viewers interest. It should be fast as nobody wants to wait for images to load up and it should also look good and be suited to what it is selling or saying. A great website should be responsive and work on a desktop, laptop, tablet and phone.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
What does your company do?
What is the structure of the business?
Is this a new design or a re-design of something which already exists?
What are the goals of the project?
What specific design deliverables do you want?
Will anyone else be working on the project?
When does my work need to be completed? What is determining that?
Who is your target audience and ideal customer?
Who are your competitors?
What is the budget for the job? (This is to help better understand what outcomes could be achieved within the budget)
Describe your creative process.
Write a brief and ask client to check and confirm it covers everything that is required of the project.
Do research to support the project - this will involve looking at similar businesses, but also researching specific values of your company. It's important I understand your business, it's needs and who you are communicating with. I will also explore possible design outcomes, creating mood boards or project boards on Pinterest.
Depending on the project I might ask the client for feedback at this stage.
Each project obviously varies somewhat, some jobs require a lot more research than others. If you want a quick turnaround on a leaflet and are quite clear about what you want I can work that way and produce good work quickly.
Next I will brainstorm and sketch out ideas quickly trying to come up with strong concepts. Working in a sketchpad/notebook is much quicker than drawing up on the Mac.
Once I've got a few ideas that I feel answer the brief I will begin to create them in the appropriate programme. Once finished I will create proofs for the client to review. This stage might take a few revisions before artwork can be signed off. Once signed off I can either supply final files to the client or organise printing, depending on the job.
What information do you need from a client before you can start work?
In addition to answering the above questions it's good to get some direction from the client about what they are looking for, this could be other designs they like or even a bit about their personality. This should help me understand them and their business a bit better.
What do you love most about your job?
Making people happy - I love it when I can help a new business stand out and go beyond what they thought was possible. I also love doing something I really enjoy everyday.
What inspired you to start your own business?
The freedom to take on new work from a variety of clients. Being able to work on a number of different projects that you are passionate about and the excitement of running your own business.
