Dan Hortop - (Pickle Studio) Q&A

Company Q&A

Describe your creative process.

My creative process follows 4 steps:
1. I collect visual reference of images, typographic styles, colours and initial ideas. I share and discuss these with my clients, agreeing on directions the designs will take.
2. I create an agreed number of distinctly different design concepts.
3. I discuss the design concepts with my clients and make any development work required.
4. I produce final print ready digital artwork and supply my clients with these files.

What information do you need from a client before you can start work?

As much information as possible...
What's the name of the company?
What are your unique selling points?
Who is your target market?
Who are your competitors?
Are there any good examples of logo's/packaging/websites that you like and can share?
Are there any particular colours that you would like to be included?
Where will the logo appear - on stationery/email/brochure/web/signage/packaging?
If packaging - have you sourced the pack materials?
When is the work required for?
Do you have a specific budget?

What do you love most about your job?

I love impressing my clients.
Doing something that I really enjoy - It's fun, not like work really!
Working for myself means my hours can be completely flexible. I can go out for a run during the day as well as talk to clients on the other side of the world during the evening.

What inspired you to start your own business?

To be the master of my own destiny - making decisions and seeing results which are proportional to what I put in.
To be able to build relationships and work directly with my clients. When working within large design agencies I witnessed projects being passed from person to person and instructions passing through account managers. This sometimes resulted in mixed messages or a 'Chinese whisper effect' and a lack of continuity. My clients like communicating with the guy that's actually doing the work.

Why should our clients choose you?

I'm an expert. I know what I am doing and what I am talking about... but I also listen and work together with clients.
My aim is to surprise and delight - to put a smile on my clients face, exceeding their expectations by creating fantastic design solutions.

Services provided by Dan Hortop - (Pickle Studio)

Professional Logo Design

I create unique and professionally made to measure logo designs which represent your company. I don't just pinch a clip art image and stick your company name under it.

Branding Design

Branding, or your ‘visual identity’ is when your brand logo, fonts, colour combinations, images, graphics, materials and tone of voice are presented consistently. I am experienced in creating branding across stationery, brochures, leaflets, presentations, adverts, packaging, signage, vehicle graphics and website design.

Packaging Design

Packaging is often the first point of contact with your customer, so its important to make a good impression! I am a packaging design expert. Whether it’s a sticky toffee pudding, a bottle of cider, a face mask or a power shower, I deliver clear strategic thought and imaginative concepts together with knowledge of how to make the concepts become reality.

Custom Designed and Built Responsive Websites

This is not a ‘template website’, it will perfectly compliment your brand and display beautifully on desktop screens, tablets and mobiles. It will be easy to manage and add to, so you can upload pages, texts, photos and links through a content management system (CMS), even if you have no technical know-how.

Brochure and Literature Design

Whether it’s stationery, brochures, adverts or presentations, I can help make your company stand out from your competitors. I can get you noticed!
