Been training here for 4 months.  Love the gym!  The trainers are great and I love the way the gym is equipped and laid out.  It is equipped like a crossfit gym, but available for open access.  You can join for classes or just do open access to workout on your own.  If you want some help, the trainers are great.  My wife loves the women's barbell club (competitive powerlifting).  The gym is very beginner friendly.  No crowds and a friendly atmosphere. I started with Cypress Fitness in April 2012. At the time I was recovering from treatments for breast cancer. I was diagnosed back in February 2011, and after a lumpectomy, I received both chemotherapy and radiation treatments. One year after diagnosis, I was looking for a way to increase my stamina and balance, as I had bouts of neuropathy caused by the chemotherapy treatment. When I heard that a new fitness space on Tchoupitoulas was offering introductory Tai Chi classes, I decided to try it out. At the time I weighed approximately 230 lbs. and was having increasing issues with balance and stamina. I also had arthritis in my knees which was growing more painful.
My first Tai Chi class was on April 3, 2012. Brian Adams, the class trainer, had me fill out the pre-enrollment form that asked about my movement history and any medical problems I might have. He then discussed these with me. Since that day Brian, Brandon Bergeron, and all the trainers at Cypress Fitness have always found ways to help me adjust my work with them so I could get maximum benefit while ensuring that I avoided further damage to my joints. I enjoy the classes, which are always different formats, making workouts fun and stimulating, and not the typical “grind” found at most health clubs.
From Tai Chi I continued on to Kettlebell workouts and metabolic classes. I have also competed in Kettlebell competition and the Precision Nutrition program. I continue to practice Tai Chi, learning four different forms. With the guidance of the Cypress Fitness Staff, I currently weigh 183 lbs. and can almost deadlift my own weight (currently at 155 lbs.). During these past 3+ years, I have had other medical issues turn up (full mastectomy and knee surgery), yet I’ve always returned to Cypress Fitness afterward ready to work, and the staff was ready to work with me.
The lesson I’ve learned at Cypress Fitness is that if I am willing to put in the work, the staff will do whatever they can to work with me. And the results I have seen in myself (and which they have helped me achieve), encourage me to continue to be strong, build muscle, and eat healthy.

I took a class with Chris yesterday. It was pretty intense.

At the end he said eat right all the rest of the day and then look at yourself the next day --- oh my god. My stomach is flatter! My hips actually smoother. After 1 workout with him.

Enough said.

Take a class with Chris.

He teaches Monday. Tuesday, Thursday and on the weekends sometimes. He also does personal training.

Truly superb. I had never done classes before, but I'm hooked, plus I go all the time just to use the open gym (which comes with the reasonably priced classes). This is NOT a place with a bunch of gimmicky add-ons like fancy new cardio machines promising weight loss in no time, tanning booths, or hot stone massages. This is a place where regular, motivated folk go to get solid exercise.

The trainers are fantastic, and they really hold the place together. Even if you're exercising alone, they'll never hesitate to answer questions or give you form recommendations if you want, but they're also never intrusive. I think it stands as a testimony to the trainers' skill that the gender ratio is pretty even in the classes, i.e. they manage to create an positive, serious, but not intimidating atmosphere. Other people in the classes are unanimously friendly (I get my movie and football news during the warm up, usually). Overall, I feel like I spend less time and mental effort exercising but I'm in better shape.

1st visit via CLASSPASS and was very impressed.
Comprehensive and well laid out gym with plenty space and solid tools to get a great workout. Was able to try some new things : kettlebells and the ski machine which are new to me. I did great on the standard rowing machine ( experienced water rower ) and the TRX. BRIAN was a great coach with patience to teach me with some individualized attention while the other class who were regulars went about the workout. I am excited to return and look to meet their other trainers. Also easy to clean up post workout with clean men's locker room and shower. A+++++ More...

I don't normally post reviews, but cypress fitness is worth it.I was in town for a few days for a vacation and desperately looking for a place to continue my kettle bell training (without lugging kettle bells in my baggage). Every other gym I contacted tried to sign me up for classes or a monthly membership or some other ridiculous thing. But these guys were incredibly prompt, helpful, honest and simply let me use their kettle bells each day for a fair price.Their gym is also no BS: just good equipment without lots of gimmicks. But what struck me most of all was the very genuinely welcoming atmosphere. They've created a good vibe where people of different fitness levels and interests can train - and get help if they want it - without any judgment. No amateur theatrics or testosterone or judgment here - just a good place to do real training with good folks. More...

Wish I could pack this gym up and put it in my pocket to take with me anywhere! Only got to work out here for a summer while doing an internship in town, but they certainly set my standards for gyms very high. I have never found trainers/instructors more dedicated to making sure you are safe while pushing yourself. A thorough stretch session at the beginning, demonstrations of proper form of all workouts before beginning, corrections to your form while you're training, and then finishing it off with more stretches is their protocol and I wish other gyms would take note. Even the clientele is friendly! Do yourself a favor and sign up for a session! More...

I've attended classes and personal training here and could write a rave review about them, but I'd like to specifically review the Precision Nutrition program with Brian. This has actually been a life-changing experience - I've learned so much along the way, and Brian is endlessly supportive and responsive to questions anytime. He sends out ideas, shares recipes and shopping tips, and sets tough but achievable goals that focus on different pieces of the nutrition puzzle and are personalized for each client. And now I have the numbers to prove it - not only have I lost weight, but I had a health screening just before starting the Precision Nutrition program and I had "high risk" numbers on my total cholesterol, triglycerides, and the ratio of good-to-bad cholesterol (TC/HDL ratio). Today, well into the Nutrition program, I was re-tested and ALL of my numbers had plummeted into the "desirable" levels. My health insurance company is thrilled with me, and I was so happy I wanted to share my results here. I definitely recommend working with Brian on Nutrition for anyone interested in improving their relationship with food and their overall health and well-being. More...

Whoops, I thought I had already reviewed Cypress! I guess I review them pretty regularly when I'm gushing about my gym to people and they ask where I go. Then I tell them "the best gym in New Orleans." Then they stare at me blankly so I tell them the actual name: Cypress Fitness. When I first moved back to Nola I was convinced I wouldn't find another gym like the one I belonged to in San Diego...I also knew I didn't want to do Crossfit, and I definitely didn't want to go to a 'traditional' gym. I think I found Cypress on Yelp, and was intrigued enough to try a class...annnnnd that's all it took. Their classes are the best workout I've ever had, and I've done Crossfit and some other crazy stuff before (and Cypress workouts are safer, imo). The trainers and owners are awesome, the people are awesome, and they've even hosted healthy food BBQs and such to build community. Love. They deserve every one of their 5-star reviews on every review site they have them on. My only gripe is the times of classes because sometimes I'm forced to choose between happy hour and gym hour - because 6:00 am workouts are only great until I need a nap at 10:00 am :). They definitely ask for feedback and comments on all things gym-related, so perhaps one day that will change - in the meantime, I still go to 'the best gym in New Orleans'! More...

I can't say enough wonderful things about Cypress fitness. Every trainer knows you by name and is incredibly supportive and positive. I mainly did the TRX and MRT classes and I always left feeling exhausted, proud, and utterly satisfied. Caroline and Brian's workouts kick your butt no matter what your ability level is because TRX allows for a range of modifications and the trainers keep an eye on everyone to make sure you are 1) doing the exercises correctly, 2) challenging yourself  if you want to be challenged, and 3) modifying when exercises become too much. One of the best parts of being a member of Cypress is the personal touch. I recently moved from New Orleans and had to give up my membership and all the trainers were so sad to see me go. At what other gym would the trainers even care?! Brandon even reached out to trainers he knew in my new home to help me find a new gym. They're just awesome.Other things I appreciated about the gym - it's centrally located if you work downtown, live uptown, or even live in mid-city like me. It's clean. The classes are one hour and they start on time and you're working the whole time. Super efficient, which you'll appreciate if you're at all busy and want your workout quick. While some might see the price and think it's expensive, I promise it's worth every penny because I always looked forward to going to the gym and never dreaded it like with other gyms I've joined in the past!Wish I had Cypress Fitness in my new city! Hi my name is Michael. I'm a chiropractic physician in my mid 40's. My whole practice has been about helping people improve the function of their bodies and improving their health and lifestyle. Well they say Dr's make the worst patients and I was in that club. Through time I developed a sedentary lifestyle and got to the point that I was winded going up a flight of stairs. I had become obese and my diet was horrible. In fact I thought I was at the point of no return and would not be able to do any activities even if I would try. One day my business partner told me about this new gym that had opened in his neighborhood. It sounded different than the basic weight machines and treadmills which I always have dreaded using (That's why I was in the bad shape I was in). So I mustered up the courage to give it a try. After a basic assessment my first class was with Caroline. She is a very challenging and high energy instructor and I was a little intimidated seeming like I was older and more out of shape than the other people in the class. I gave it my best shot and Caroline was supportive and helped me build up the confidence to work through the activities. That day started a whole new lifestyle for me. Since then in addition to Caroline, I have worked with Brian, Brandon, Lauren, and Shamus all of which have their own unique training styles and motivation. I can say that the diversity is enriching and I have had the opportunity to learn different things from them all. My endurance level has vastly improved and my strength seems at least 3-4 times of what it was before. I have gained muscle mass and lost fat and inches. I feel like I am back to the days of my 20's on activity level. In essence I am a happier healthier person. I have made Cypress Fitness an important part of my lifestyle as well as diet. Am I perfect?.....no. Do I still have goals I want to reach?......yes. I feel like that as long as I attend my scheduled classes I will reach all my goals. I think I've earned the right to give the first review for Cypress Fitness, as I have left quite a bit of sweat there over the past four and a half months since they've opened.  I had been doing kickboxing training with Brian for over a year at another gym when he told me that he and a business partner, Brandon, were opening their own gym on Tchoup.  So I followed him there and have been taking TRX, Kettlebell, and various other cardio and circuit training classes pretty regularly.  TRX is something that everyone in NOLA who likes to eat, but does not like being fat, should get into.  It is effective for everyone from frail grannies to muscled-up ex-navy seals (who developed the system).  Drew Brees endorses it (and uses it), so that alone should convince you to try it.  Kettlebell training with Brandon will make you strong.  Not stare-at-your-arms-in-the-mirror-while-you-do-curls strong, but real functional strength.  No machines, just your body moving itself and an object in dynamic, natural movements with your core and stabilizing muscles working the whole time.          I was trying to think of an adequate metaphor/simile to describe the results I've experienced from my training at Cypress, and the best I could come up with was "These abs!  I look like a white D'Angelo circa 'Untitled (How does it feel).'"  Is that too obscure an early '00s R&B video reference?  Maybe.  Suffice it to say that the trainers at Cypress Fitness will motivate you to get in great shape, in a completely judgment-free, supportive, accessible and fun environment.  This is not a chain-franchise-Anytime-Riviera gym -- it is a gym run by people who care about your health, designed for people who want to achieve their better selves.
