I wanted to see what my running lactate threshold really was, since most measures are just proxies. Simon is a consummate professional who made the process fun and exciting, and gave a detailed analysis and training suggestions afterwards. I certainly intend to work with Simon again. More...

You always think, do I really need a Coach, All I need to do is train as hard as I can, right? Wrong!

You can follow a training and complete it but if you understand why you do this, why you do what Simon tells you to :-) then the effort and performance is even greater. And that experience is for lifetime. And it's nice to see that your Coach has a personal approach to your progression. More...

Simon coached me in 2016, 2017 and took on someone with huge drive and a lot of questions and a healthy list of 'must do's'. I don't know who is more shocked at the improvements that came out as a result of his work. 30% effective gain in lactate ftp over 3 years. His training and coaching methodology is easy to understand and implement even with a chaotic life. He reduced my training load from 18 hours+ to 9 hours total a week and I got stronger and faster. Quality, not quantity was the absolute message. Generous with his time - it's no surprise that he is busy :) More...

Simon has coached me in 2016 and 2017 towards improving my cycling and running performance.

His scientific and holistic approach to training has not only led me to a PB in road racing but has kept me fit and healthy throughout the year. Blood lactate tests on the treadmill and the turbo as well as remote testing ensured the training sessions were frequently adapted to my fitness improvements and specific weaknesses.

The adaptive program evolved nicely and the variations in training have kept me engaged and curious throughout the season. The winter work in the gym was especially beneficial for me to build more robust foundations and train injury free.

I should also add that Simon has been most generous with his time and invested considerable energy to review my post session feedbacks, provide insightful comments and review planed training sessions as often as needed. He is very precessional and a pleasure to work with.

While my recent career changes has forced me to take a step back from competitive racing, I have every intention to resume working with Simon as soon as I get the chance to and recommend his coaching and testing services wholeheartedly!

I picked the Amstel Gold sportive (150km) in Limburg, Holland, in 2016 as a training goal to aim for through the winter. Simon gave me a comprehensive periodised programme based on test results with customised bike and strength sessions mapped out for six months. After finishing the Amstel Gold, my hardest event to date, I can say with certainty that Simon’s expertise and encouragement were crucial in getting me to the Cauberg and completing the event to my satisfaction. Simon is very thorough and focussed on your goals, from the first session to the last. It would be fair to say he leaves nothing to chance, the rest is up to you!

Des has always been on hand at the beginning, middle and end of each cycling season to help me get the best cycling position possible for my goals, while helping me to indentify weaknesses and correct / build strength in my body to prevent future injuries.

The short of it is, after numerous bike fits at places like cadence and Giant in St Pauls, Des' bike fit is the most comprehensive and excellent fit I have ever had. I can not recommend it enough. All in the session took about 4 hours and it is really worth booking when you know you have time to allow Des to really get in depth. Most fits will include a body assessment, (if they don't then they aren't even worth it.) but this one will make you get to know your body very well. I have always suffered bad posture since childhood and it turns out it a hip bone that is too short in turn throwing my pelvis out of whack and causing knee pain due to Osgood Schlatter condition. There is no add-on value Retul or PowerFit or any fancy tech. what you pay for is absolute expertise and years of practice that Des posses. If you want the best then this is it. Disclaimer I paid for my fit and this is not a paid review or anything along those lines. I honestly can't say enough good things about the service Des provides. I've been treated by Des on a number of occasions over the last few months and have always felt the sessions have benefited me greatly. After my injury last year I saw numerous physician's and the pain kept recurring until Des managed to iron it out and has allowed me to start training again. Des is extremely professional and knowledgeable and someone I can highly recommend to others. More...

Q&As

CPS In-Motion dynamic programmes are designed to fit with an individuals training history, fitness profile (baseline assessments) and work/life routine to maximise the probability of prime performance on time for their event, or series of races. This is achieved through extensive analysis and responsive/ adaptive approach to training session completion, compliance, recovery, nutrition and stress management. Training intensity and duration fits with precious expendable time available rather than an obligation to complete unrealistic work-outs which accumulate fatigue and stress, which is the quickest route to client non-compliance. Each programme is unique to an individual, and is an enjoyable and revelationary journey for myself and my clients as each relationship becomes a learning process to build upon further, without wasting time nor energy.

Typically, endurance sport doesn't really concur with a stunning physique. However, it is ALL about body composition. When you achieve an optimal power-to-weight ratio, then your percentage fat will be relatively low, and your lean mass and muscle quality very prominent. Overall strong cyclists and runners are perceived not to have a great amount of upper body strength, but this may be considerable at the start of a season and decline over time, as muscles become more economical and efficient.

There are multiple reasons for why I feel that I excel at performance coaching and providing the objectivity my clients require to smash their events and the competition. I live vicarously through each client and put myself in their shoes, so I feel like I am winning when they do! Poor results are as much as a disappointment to myself as they are to those who have put in the hard work, so I generally work hard to avoid those, and understand how each clients longer term athlete development is progressive.
The main challenge for myself, is to profile the athlete throroughly and assess the event demands and design a programme to address those and the physiological attributes, i.e. their strength and and weaknesses. This typically takes place during the initial rapport building period of a programme which I enjoy and so do my clients, as this is a chance to convey what is expected over the coming months. Clients tend to realise quickly that I build a plan around them, and so training and coachng really isn't about being the monsterous dictator that traditional coach profiles were perceived as...modern physiology has come a long way, it's all about frequency, intensity and duration at the right time....in essence minimum dosing for maximum training effect!

Then of course there are the client events, after all the hard work has passed...to be honest, this can be a sensitive period for both as the important events approach, and so specific training may need to be fine-tuned to increase the probability of reaching form and peak performance at the right time...but in general this is planned from the start of the programme.
Finally, the rewards come when I get the messages from clients on Sunday afternoon, and see their names or photos with big smiles....sharing that is tremendous, as I can say I have succeeded in many types of races, although perhaps not me personally! The main thing is that performances are appraised so that clients can get even more out of themselves for next time....but with lasting, not temporary results.

Having spent a good few years in the lab, I was aspiring for more front-line interaction. In my spare-time I was formulating the principles of physiology and lactate kinetics (hence lactate threshold training) from the etensive new paradigm work conducted by Gladden, Brooks and Faude etc. I realised that I excelled at translating performance training to my peers, and taking this forward to share with anyone who wanted similar substantial results and a greater return on time investment seemed a pretty natural progression. I first implemented performance services for Cadence Performance, UK, although I soon realised that I would only be free to apply the relevant principles under my own direction, to get the most from my clients and provide the quality of service I would expect from a sports scientist with a high calibre background.
I now enjoy working closely with my core clients, and feel I offer not only a unique performance training solution, but also an investment into preventative medicine for their long term health and well-being, which ultimately is priceless. This gives me a strong sense of satisfaction, especially when clients learn how their physiologies respond and adapt to critical training stimuli.

Many typical reports from coached clients often complain they aren't achieving the results they should be, or feel their current client-coach interaction isn't sufficient, which is usually too late in their programme to correct. I am one of the few exercise physiologists who are able to apply the fundamentals of sports science, with practical effect to diverse athletes and challenging cases. I work intimately and proactively to maximise success at every step.

All of my previous clients merit my performance services based on achieving a 100% success rate with a low number of clients over any one season, for a very personal service, as endurance training should be. My unique background is in muscle biochemistry, applied physiology and elite level cycling, all the elements required for understanding how any individual can reach prime cycling, rapidly and on time for their event(s).
