Any idiot attempting to compare this place to Phil's bbq should be smacked in the face with hot brisket. The owner is a fantastic human who deeply cares and delivers on extremely high quality bbq. If you're anywhere near lemon grove, don't think twice, just go. More...

If you judge a bbq spot by its sauce and not it's meat then you don't know bbq. This place gives you the best meats for a bbq place in San Diego. I love Phil's sauce and sides. But coops blows them out of the water with their meats and it's not even close. The way I see it is I go to a bbq place for good smoked brisket, chicken,Texas HOMEMADE SAUSAGE,and pulled pork. I don't know the owner but he is doing things the right way. More...

I was tailgating at a Charger's game at the Q years ago when I came across a dude giving out samples of BBQ meats. He had a big smoker trailer or some other contraption attached to his truck. The meat melted in my mouth. It was delicious. He told me the story of when he came to San Diego he couldn't find BBQ as good as it was back home in Texas. That dude was Coop.  Been visiting his little shop in Lemon Grove ever since. The brisket is my favorite. Much better than what I've had at Phil's, or even Grand Ole BBQ, which is a step up from Phil's. More...

First time at Coop's today and I'm beyond impressed. I'm a former BBQ restaurant investor and this stuff is as good or better as it gets. Great service, great food. I tried the pork rib tips, cole slaw, potato salad and cornbread and it was delicious...especially the ribs and potato salad. They have 3 sauces on the table and neither of them disappointed. Coop should rename this place "Phil who's?". I highly recommend this place and I will be back! More...

This place is SHMACKIN'!! My friend mentioned this place to me because we were on the search for black-owned restaurants in San Diego and this one took the cake. When you arrive the parking lot is pretty small but manageable, and they have two locations right across from each other. One sells everything you'd throw on the bbq--brisket, pork, hot links, ribs, etc--and has all the fixens to go with them. The location right across the parking lot sells fried chicken, fried catfish, and waffles. Now I may have lived in San Diego for as long as I can remember, but my upbringing was a southern as it gets; when I saw all the options Coop's had, my heart jumped for joy and my stomach was more than ready for the throw down I ordered the large plate with brisket, hotlinks, mac n cheese, collard greens, cornbread, and a sweet tea. After placing my order I skipped along down to the other spot and got myself an order of fried catfish just to top it all off. The brisket literally melted in my mouth with the perfect ratio of meat to fat, and the hotlinks and catfish just bursted with flavor. Naturally, I mixed my collard greens and cornbread together and it took me back to my childhood when my mom didn't mind cooking lol Now that Mac n cheese... FIRE! If you ever want to judge the quality of a bbq spot, ya know see if they can reaaaalllyyy cook, order their Mac n cheese. For that reason and that reason alone, I will be back for as long as they're open. And I'll especially be back on Sundays because that's when they sell their candied yams, I can't wait to try them! The only bummer about this place is that they close so darn early, but even then I can't even be mad because they puttin in some real work over there. The workers are friendly, they check on you to make sure everything's tasting alright and it's gives me a warm feeling to see some old regulars at peace mackin on some good cookin' and I'm right there with em ;) More...

Some of the best barbecue I've had since Franklin's in Austin, Texas. No exaggeration! We got the Kit n' Kaboodle which came with 4 meat choices (2lbs total), 2 medium sides, and 2 big pieces of corn bread. All for less than $30 and could easily feed a family of 3-4! Besides the low cost though, the food is amazing! The meat is tender and flavourful, and while I normally don't like barbecue sauce, I found his just right; not too sweet and not too tangy. There was even a spicy one that was good. If you're going to get a side dish, make sure you try the collard greens. Honestly, they're the best I've ever tried. I could have easily eaten just that on it's own. Brad, the owner, stopped by to greet everyone, which was a nice surprise. We worked together years ago when he was a practicing nurse and he hasn't changed. Still as down-to-earth and a genuinely nice guy. They give $2 discounts for Kaiser nurses .So come out and support this amazing barbecue restaurant that we're lucky to have in town. You won't regret it! More...

Best BBQ place ever. Hands down. A few weeks ago my husband and I went out to eat with some family to another BBQ place in Spring Valley and let me tell you I'd NEVER GO BACK TO THE OTHER PLACE. I kept thinking to myself the whole time oh hell no Coops is way better never again going to a different place. The food is amazing, delicious and literally dissolves of how tender it is. The baked beans are to die for. The home made Texas sausage is delicious. The corn bread is homemade hands down. And their desserts are amazingly delicious as well. And let's not forget that Texas Sweet tea soooo good. Recommend this place to anyone. Good BBQ right here. More...

Recently moved here from North Carolina, and don't tell the folks back home, but this place has some of the best barbecue I've ever had!  The chicken is so flavorful and smoky, and the ribs would make Fred Flintstone proud.  The sides were also delicious and the staff was very helpful.  Do yourself a favor next time you're in Lemon Grove and see what Coops is all about!  There is a parking lot and it fills up when it's busy (and it gets busy!)  but there's street parking, too. I ordered two "knock outs" as a thank-you lunch for my crew at work. Each of them consisted of six meats, two sides, and cornbread. The food was EXCELLENT!! Everyone raved about the sides, too, including the greens! An outstanding meal for 12 at about half the cost of the "popular" BBQ joints. Authentic, flavorful, smoked meats with sauce that was perfect. Greens, Mac n Cheese, red beans and rice, and tasty Cole slaw completed the deal. We added some peach cobbler, and let me just say that it was TOUGH getting back to work after that! Thank you, Coop's West Texas...you made our luncheon very memorable! More...

We took a couple year break because the rub for the ribs was getting too salty. Went back in 2017, and it was again too salty.  Well, we've gone twice in the last month, and are pleased to report that the rib rub is pretty much perfect.  The smoke has always been good, and it's as good as ever.  There's a lot of votes in this household for the chicken as the best meat Coop's offers, and for me it's tough to choose between chicken and ribs.  Pulled pork is also very good, especially with slaw on a bun (just need a vinegar bbq sauce for it to be an eastern Carolina sandwich). The slightly smoky beans with pineapple bits are awesome, as is the potato salad.  The bbq sauce, though very sweet, has a nice smokiness. Haven't been a big fan of the brisket or beef ribs in the past (brisket dry & beef ribs have too much fat and too little meat), might try again. More...

This is a gem of a spot in one of San Diego's many neighborhoods. Everything I ate was great. I had the pulled pork with macaroni and cheese, potato salad, and cole slaw. Pulled pork was lean and juicy. The bbq sauce was tangy and just right. The slaw was light and not overwhelming. The potato salad was the sleeper here. Seasoned and prepared perfectly. One of my go-to spots in San Diego! You really can't go wrong with their brisket. Always very moist and tender. Their bbq is savory, fresh, and really tasty. We order the brisket & rib tips, Mac n cheese, and their red beans and rice. They never disappoint. They are a little on the pricey side but it's expected. The shop is mostly clean, they do a good job of maintaining the tables and whatnot. They could probably sweep a little more often but it's fine. It gets busy here as well, and there isn't that much seating so keep that in mind! Not a fan of cornbread, and theirs is pretty dry. But it tastes good. I'm a Texas native so I'm a BBQ and soul food snob and highly critical. Coops did not disappoint. I got the stuffed baked potato and the brisket platePros- Brisket. it was excellent. Flavor was great. moist. bark was good. No apparent fat ( although i do love a fatty brisket) The setting- They played old soul music. was a very feel good place. staff was nice. place was packed but they still moved fast\Portions- Not a huge portion of food but they were not stingy. Price was moderate too.Cons- Mac and cheese. It was too starchy. Not sure what caused it. maybe they used a roux for the cheese sauce. or didnt drain the noodles. i think this caused it to be bland. Other comments mentioned liking baked mac and cheese better. I agree. BBQ sauce- Sauce was a bit watery and bland. Not horrible but not particularly good. Overall- I would definitely recommend for the meat alone. Definitely worth it. More...

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST BBQ I'VE EVER HAD! Better than anything I've had in Texas, Mississippi, Florida, Illinois, basically anywhere. Just moved here and I'm lucky enough to have this place 5 minutes from my house. But in all honesty, I'd drive 2 hours for BBQ this good. You just can't find BBQ like this in Cali. Brisket OUT OF THIS WORLD. 15 minutes before they close, a line out the door. The reviews don't lie, this place is bomb. Not to mention everyone working was nice and super hospitable. Definitely will be back. More...

One of the best barbecue places I've been to in a long time.  Me and my boyfriend were visiting from Sacramento and one of his friends Who is from San Diego recommended the place. This will be my first time trying this place, there were a lot of people there I hope the food is as good as it looks. Give me a little bit of time to start eating and I'll let you know. the food was pretty good I didn't really too much care for the macaroni and cheese and I did not like the sweet potato pie it was kind of loose and I like a more stiff pie. Also once you got home you had to add the sauce to the meat they gave it to you separate in a little container. Which I didn't like when you get barbecue ribs that should already be barbecue for you. I've been hearing about this place for a sometime, so I decided to stop by while I was in the area. I wasn't really hungry so I just ordered the Mac & Cheese because I heard it was good there. & it was. I prefer my mac & cheese baked longer, but I get them having to appease the masses. I'll have to write a more thorough review when I try more of the food... but so far so good. I would give it a 5 but I think the cashier gave me a small container when I paid for a large. It's hard to believe that I haven't written a review for my favorite barbecue spot in San Diego. This place has been my go to for years when I haven't really felt like doing it myself. I am originally from Texas and I grill and barbecue myself, so I'm a pretty hard on BBQ joints because I grew up around so much great barbecue. I prefer slow smoked meats that have good flavor without having to add sauce or additional seasoning after it is cooked. Great sauces should complement that and so should the side orders. Coop's has all of this covered for me. I haven't had anything from him yet that I didn't enjoy, but I usually order the beef ribs, baked beans and greens. The sweet tea is also a typical Texas beverage and is really really sweet (not a complaint). My favorite dessert is the peach cobbler.Service is fast and friendly but the seating is a bit limited for small dining area. If there isn't enough seating available, I'll usually just get the order to go and eat it at home. Coop himself is a really nice guy. You can tell that he has a passion for cooking and genuinely wants people to enjoy his food - plus, he is extremely good at it. More...

Coop's is hands down the best bbq place here in SD. This hidden gem offers smoked meats rather than slabbing it in the grill and call it bbq. One of their best plates is called the kit n kaboodle. This delicious kit offers 3 choices of meats. Personally, I would pick their amazing marbled brisket, pork ribs and louisiana sausage. the entree also come with a generous serving or cornbread and 2 small sides. Beans and rice and mac n cheese are my top two faves. If you ever want an authentic bbq, coops is the place. Worth the drive! More...

Why, oh why, did it take me so long to try Coop's? Why? Because they are amazing. Real talk, I'm a Phil's fan girl and I suck at trying new places. I really do. All my friends recommend Coop's. All the reviews are awesome. It's closer. Still, it took me untilNOW to try it. Coop's is amazing. It's a different style of BBQ than Phil's. I'm a sauce fan usually, but the meat here doesn't need it. I've gotten the pork ribs, tried the beef ribs, as well as the brisket and pulled pork. Everything, EVERYTHING was tender and flavorful. The sauce is great as well. So are the sides. I'm still a Phil's fan, but Coop's will be cutting deeply into their business from me, that's for sure! More...

This is one of the only restaurants that I can say gets better with age! I found them shortly after moving to SD and unfortunately shortly after he lost his first place to a fire. The flavor of this place is amazing! Even when the wood is changed slightly, you can taste it, but it is NOT a bad thing. It makes your taste buds have a sense of new found glory every time you go back. The sweet tea is just out of this world. Not many people can do the "diabetes tea," as we call it, and not burn the flavor. Ribs, chicken, pork, sausage, sides... IT'S ALL AMAZING! I've left  San Diego in 2014 but make sure its one of the first and last places I go to when I visit. So much so that I even turned 2 of the TSA agents at the airport onto it. So you're welcome guys!As a side note, this place was run by he and his wife for the first few years I lived in SD and enjoyed getting their food every pay day. It was amazing to see the same faces smile at you every time. However on my second to last visit (Summer of 2017) the customer service was not up to par. It seemed like it was temp staffing and even less temporary personalities. I can't believe I haven't rated this place yet! I moved to San Diego approximately 3.5 years ago. That's when I started to relay on Yelp 100% when it came to finding good places to eat. Coop's was one of the first places I visited and I have since then, come back. I love BBQ and this place surely delivers. I normally go in and get the two meat plate. I tired to taste different meats every time I go but, Rib tips, Brisket and pork are my jam! So I recommend those. They are delicious, moist and the sauces really enhance the flavor.  The place is small but I find it charming. I like sitting there and observe the friendly staff serving delicious food to an array of customers. This place is worth the try, I recommend you do it whenever you get a chance and have a bit of time in your hands since there is normally a line, especially on Sunday. I'm sure I'll see you there, I live less than a quarter mile away now ;) More...

I consider myself fairly picky when it comes to BBQ and have never been a fan of a lot of the really popular spots in SD (i.e. Phil's), but Coop's is definitely deserving of 5-stars for a few reasons! The short:1. Delicious BBQ, generous portions, great prices.2. Nice customer service and samples of new items served by the owner.3. THE SWEET TEA!The long:We came in for lunch and each got one of their Small Boy sandwiches -- two brisket and one of the pulled pork -- and all had a hard time picking a favorite. I can't lie...when it came out I was feeling a bit underwhelmed in terms of how they looked because the pale buns but they were the PERFECT compliment to the meat and BBQ sauces. For sides we got collard greens, mac n cheese, red beans and rice, and potato salad. I didn't try the red beans and rice nor the potato salad, but the collard greens and mac n cheese were fantastic. Finally...the sweet tea...oh man. If you like SWEET sweet tea...this is your jam. It's SO good! Before and while we ate our meal, the owner was walking around serving some nice sized samples of other items they serve and a sample of the fried chicken they're about to start offering. The fried chicken was SO good!!! He said they'll also be serving up fried catfish starting Friday so we'll be back to try that soon. Check them out!! More...

I ate here after a long hike at El Cajon mountain, and boy the BBQ meat quality can stand on its own. It does not need the sauce to taste good. Hidden in Lemon Grove, this small restaurant has built quite a reputation in SD BBQ scene. I would not say that the meat was fall off the bone tender, but the rub that this place uses is delicious and does not overpower the meat. Come in here hungry and you won't regret it!Family owned and operated, there was a line that went out the door on a Saturday afternoon. "Must be good" I thought in my mind. Line went by quick though. You can do online orders and skip the line, but telephone orders still have to wait in the line.I got the Kit N Kaboodle combo for myself, and yes I know it feeds 2 or 3 people. I was really starving and man, I gotsa get them protein gains in. I picked the beef rib, pulled pork, rib tips, and carribean jerk chicken as my meat choices (for a total of 2 lbs). I got 2 slices of cornbread, medium sized mac n cheese (50 cents extra) and potato salad for the sides. By the way, I forgot to order a drink (it's separate) and went to the back of the line to order one. The cashier giggled was surprised that I did that and said that next time to come straight up to the counter for it. Good to know :)The beef rib was juicy and the fat to meat ratio was good. The bbq flames licked the meat quite well. The smoke ring was well created on the rib. The pulled pork was a bit dry unfortunately but seasoning was there. The soft bones with the rib tips were delectably chewy and had fun chomping on them! The carribean jerk chicken was moist and sweet in my opinion. Yay for moist chicken! I have to agree, I passed on the cornbread, it was dry and didn't finish it. Maybe more butter during the baking process? I like Cali Comfort's cornbread better.(jalapeno infused). The potato salad tasted average.Yeah I ordered enough food, I finished maybe half of it before surrendering to the to-go boxes. The owner himself was present and gave out free samples of fried chicken to showcase an upcoming fried chicken restaurant his family is going to open up soon. The fried chicken was also crispy yet moist. This family knows how to cook some meat!I did not have the opportunity to try their sweet potato pie but let's have that be another reason to come back. Thanks to Coop and his fam for delivering a great post workout meal for my hungry BBQ appetite. Until next time! More...

The Mac and cheese is in the top 3 for sure... it's a little pricey compared to other spots but worth it in the end. I haven't been to Texas or any barbecue city, but this is the best I've had. The ribs, brisket and hot links were smoked to perfection while complementing well with the mac & cheese and collards. I'm a sucker for collard greens, one of the best I've had as well. The cashier was nice and the owner greeted us with a smile. Perfect way to spend a weekend lunch, definitely driving down to SD again for this. More...

Located inside a small plaza with parking in front . I came here with my family party of 6 and a baby ! It's not very big but we fit jut fine . Order at the counter . I got a brisket sandwich with a side of macaroni and cheese . That macaroni was so cheesy and delicious . I tried the baked beans from coleslaw both yummy. My dad got a plate which was large portions. The owner came by our table thanked us for coming and asked how our meal was. He informed us across the parking lot he was opening another place that would have fried fish. I thought that was a nice touch . Everyone who worked here was so nice and helpful More...

I can't believe I've never gotten around to reviewing this place.  The place is smoky and in the middle of nowhere- but I would give it 6 stars if I could as being my favorite BBQ place in San Diego County.  I've ordered turkey from them in the past for Thanksgiving and Xmas- incredibly tasty.  The brisket and pulled pork are out of this world, as is the ribs, the sausage...ok, let's just say that I've never eaten anything less than stellar here.  If you haven't eaten there yet, go there now!! Seriously, stop reading and go.  Then drop me off some ribs... More...

For many years, good BBQ restaurants in San Diego were non-existent.  That is slowly changing as some legit places are now opening up.  Leading the way is a small location off the beaten track in Lemon Grove.  Cutting to the chase, Coops is definitely a front runner for best BBQ in San Diego.Coops offers standard BBQ fare, 3 kinds of ribs (spareribs, beef ribs and rib tips), pulled pork, brisket, hot links and jerk chicken.  On weekends they offer homemade Texas sausage which we have yet to try.  The selection of sides includes red beans and rice and collard greens along with standards like coleslaw, potato salad and beans.  Plates and sandwiches come with sides and meat can also be ordered by the pound. Prices are extremely reasonable.  What we like to order is a pound of pulled pork at $12.99 and the one pound plate that includes half a pound of brisket and a half pound of any other meat plus two sides and cornbread for $17.99.  We usually get the hot links as our second meat.  This order can feed a family of four for a little under $40 when drinks are added.  It should be noted prices are lower during lunch and they run weekly specials.  For example, if you go on Thursday you get $2 off on a plate. Our son has quickly fallen in love with Coops, even though it is a long drive (he hates long drives to restaurants).   The pulled pork is not Carolina style (with a vinegar base) but is still awesome.  Some of the best ever.  Ditto the brisket which is my personal favorite.  It is surprisingly hard to find a place that does quality brisket and Coops is probably the leader in San Diego. Coops has to be the best BBQ place in East county. The brisket sandwiches are beyond legit. They are love. They are life. Don't sleep on Coop's West Texas! This place is LEGIT. The pork and beef ribs are the truth. The pork rib tips are amazing. If you're lucky enough to visit on a day when gravy is offered, do yourself a favor and order the pulled pork with gravy. It's amazing. Coop's West Texas is the host of the only edible brisket outside of the Lone Star State. I said it. I mean it, too. I'm a proud SoCal local, but I know bar-b-que, and I know brisket, so you can believe me when I say that it's only done right in TX and at Coop's!Coop's West Texas is so good, I know a vegetarians who like to go. Think about how deep that is. The mac and cheese is scrumptious while the corn bread is divine. Don't even get me started on the desserts. There are three bar-b-que sauces offered, mild, spicy, and a special blend. They are all amazing. Don't forget to try the sweet tea. Don't have too much. It's quite a jolt. It's so good it's dangerous. I love supporting local businesses. Mr. Coop and his family are so unbelievably kind and humble, it's no wonder their food stirs my soul. Their energy shines through every bite. On the weekends, you cN order Mr. Coop's house made sausage. OMG!If you haven't tried this place, go! If you haven't been in a while, hurry back. First time at coops went from 115-2pm to grab lunch on my day off. From the front looks like an ok place has outdoor seating across a small parking lot and some indoor seating restrooms I believe were at the outside area I didn't need to use it so wasn't really looking for one. Indoors wasn't anything too fancy they do however have several large tv's which was nice easy access to soda machine and silverware etc. The food itself was served in a Togo style setup which is fine for the BBQ setup keeps things simple and easy to clean. The food itself I thought was very good lots of flavor and the meat was clearly cooked long enough to have the nice tender aspect. The sides I wish were a little bigger portion size but I do have a big appetite so it was prob fine for the majority of people. Staff there were helpful and friendly. Only negative thing really that made me not give the 5 star was there were some gnats or something and a couple flys that kept me swatting while I ate I know it's hard to keep them out but it was something that did bother me. I def would recommend the place and I'm sure I'll go back again. More...

Sweet potato pie! Peach Cobbler! Shut the front door!  The meats simply fall apart. Tender. Juicy. Delicious.  When you place your order, it takes about 15-20 minutes for the order to be prepared. Seating is at a premium at Coop's. We take our food to go. The interior of the restaurant is small & loud. Parking is ample. I don't believe you will regret trying Coop's. More...

I was very surprised to see that this place was so small and with limited seating, due to the many positive reviews for this establishment. It wasn't a big deal, because luckily my group was able to beat the rush hour and grab a seat. There's additional outdoor seating across from the restaurant near their restroom. Parking lot is kind of small, but you can usually find a spot because people are coming and going. If you come here, you definitely need to try the brisket. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of getting the beef ribs. Don't get me wrong, the beef ribs were decent, but the brisket is what earns this restaurant their stripes. The beef ribs were okay, but I honestly thought the beef ribs at Phil's were much better (the meat wasn't straight off the bone and not as tender as Phil's). I know I'm going to get a lot of criticism for that, but I prioritize meat quality for my BBQ. The sides were pretty good here as well. I got the mac n cheese for an extra 50 cents, the baked beans, and cornbread. I liked the cornbread the most. Baked beans were a bit too sweet and mac n cheese was decent. It was a great dinner for a decent value (you get $2 off at check ins). But I really don't see myself venturing all the way out to Lemon Grove to try this place again, especially since I'm so close to Phil's. I would recommend this place if you were nearby or already heading east. More...

Absolutely love Coop's. The food is really great, priced in a way that I guess is typical for BBQ. You really have to visit to understand what it's all about. The food is memorable in a way where you won't crave BBQ, you'll crave Coop's. Be careful coming around lunch time as the tables fill up and there are only a few inside, very few with proportion to the amount of business they get. Yes, there's seating outside, it's just hot during the summer. They have an app that Does work if you want your food to be ready when you get there. I'd have to say my favorite thing about Coop's West Texas is the owner. Literally every single time I've been there he's stopped by my table to ask how everything was. Every now and again he'd give me a nod as we cross paths on my way to my car. Just the definition of a good business owner. I was on the fence with a confident 4.5, but this guy tips the scale. Wow, can't believe after living in San Diego for more than 10 years, I finally had the pleasure of visiting Coop's West Texas BBQ in Lemon Grove! When we arrive, our GPS had directly us to their ancillary location, and we had thought it was close because it was completely dark. Thankfully there was a sign that said, "Coop's is right behind you." We turned around looking like two deer in headlights and had an Ah-Ha moment! There were quite a few patrons in and out, so it doesn't get too crowded. The menu was straightforward and easy to decipher. My fiancé and I ordered half slab of Pork Ribs and the samples with four meats (Pork Spareribs, Beef Brisket, Pulled Pork, Southwestern Jerk Chicken) with sides of collared greens, Mac & Cheese, Potato Salad and Bakes Beans. This also comes with two Corn Bread.Omgosh, when the food came out our eyes had hearts (like the emoji) and mouths were drooling! The portion sizes is HUGE!!! With two orders, it could of fed up to 4 people. Every single type of meat was extremely tender and the BBQ sauce was not overpowering. What I love about Coop's is that they offer giant bottles of their house BBQ sauce on the tables so you can adjust the flavoring based on your own liking. I'm not usually a fan of pulled pork (I know, I know, sacrilegious), but Coop's pulled pork is the bomb. So tender, soft and juicy. The sides were out of this world. I loved the salty collared greens and the sweetness of the baked beans. I think they add in pineapple slices into the baked beans. The corn bread was a little dry for me, good thing they gave us butter. We had a great BBQ dinner at Coop's and wouldn't mind making the trip to visit them more often in Lemon Grove. There is a trolley running adjacent to it, so maybe I'll bring my bike, hop on the trolley and come over that way next time. Highly highly recommend!!!! More...

This place has the best BBQ ever. Amazing food. I ordered the pound plate, and boy was it good. It had rib tips, which tasted nice and perfect. The brisket was perfectly cooked, had a beautiful smoke ring, and had a succulent, tender taste. The rib tips tasted excellent. Words can't describe it. They included a complimentary slice of cornbread. It was hot and freshly baked. This place is real Texas barbecue. Not one of those places offering "genuine BBQ" when they have overcooked meats and rude service. Very friendly people here and they were constantly checking in with us. We even got a free slice of sausage because we wanted to try it. If you are ever in the Lemon Grove area or even remotely interested in some BBQ, you've got to try this place. Trust me, it WILL make your day. Amazing food, amazing service, amazing life. Great job, Coop's! More...

I stay a good 45 mins away and go now about once every month and a half on Sunday's (just for the yams). Not one complaint! More...

Classic BBQ joint that reminds me of home. I had the Big Boy sandwich with beef brisket and it was delicious. Lot of meet and all the BBQ sauce you want table-side. I'll be back for more

Came in on a Friday night around 8:30PM. As a party of 4 we were worried that they might be out of some meat - that was not a problem. We got the combo with 6 meats. I'm a brisket man but the pulled pork won me over. The ribtips, because of its tenderness, came a close second. The hot links were HOT, but the bottomless drinks took care of that. Usually, I prefer corn bread and cobbler, but again, the pork/beans and rice/beans sides made a fan out of me. Their sauces came in smoke, sweet, or spicy. The place was small but clean. Parking was no problem. I will be back, or I can always use Doordash! More...

This is the BEST!! BBQ In San Diego and probably in all of California. I'm from Texas and this place definitely knows West Texas BBQ. The brisket is smoked to perfection and so soft and tender, the chicken is soft and flavorful, the pulled pork is excellent. The mac n cheese isn't the best but people don't come here for that they come for the best damn BBQ in Cali. The corn bread is okay, but the baked beans are jam packed with sweet flavor. The sweet tea is the bomb. I can go on and on about Coop's but y'all are just gonna come and try for yourselves! More...

Was visiting San Diego with family and decided to go to Coop's because we love BBQ lol. The place smells amazing when we came in like some really authentic BBQ. We decided on a knockout plate. The food was ready pretty quickly which was nice because the smell was making me starve. My first bite was the sausage which was hot, juicy and delicious. The pulled pork was also very flavorful. The beans were really sweet and the freshly baked cornbread just crumbled. Overall, Coop's is definitely the place to go if you want some home cooked soul food. The owner is a really nice and sociable guy. Too bad I won't be a regular...... More...

Coop's BBQ ain't no joke. My husband and I have been wanting to try Coop's for awhile now and we finally made it happen.  Today, we ordered 3 lbs of brisket, 1 full slab of pork ribs, 1 lb of pulled pork, 2 beef ribs, some slaw, collard greens, cornbread and sweet potato pie.  Got to try it all...but, after all that, I wish I had ordered some sausage and hot links, too.  Oh well, next time, because there definitely will be a next time.Brisket was tender and flavorful.  Pulled pork was delicious (juicy, cooked just right), ribs were tender, too.  Slaw and collard greens were excellent.  I like that the slaw isn't creamy.  And the collard greens were savory (and gave me the illusion I was eating healthy!).  Initially, I was hoping for some peach cobbler, but they were out.  Since, I couldn't leave without dessert, I brought a slice of sweet potato pie home and I'm glad I did.  Not too dense and just enough sweetness.Jael at the register was so helpful and kind; and Coop was there and said hi.  Love the mom-and-pop feel.  Love the food.  We will definitely be back...this time for all of the above AND some sausage & hot links, too. This place is great for Texas style BBQ. I only gave it 4 stars because they charged extra for my combo with beef ribs. I would never opt for beef ribs (since pork is always best), but the hubby wanted the beef.

Since I was stationed in San Diego in 2012 this is by far the best barbeque I've had! I love the home style food made to perfection! This is a family owned business and you'll always see the owner at the smoker bringing out the amazing food and then talking to the customers. I am now stationed 1.5hr away and Coops is more than worth the drive! Highly recommend this place over the large chain BBQ restaurants. More...

This place was amazing!! I usually don't like BBQs but this place was great. I really love how they don't drown the meat in BBQ sauce and have the sauces on the table. The BBQ sauces tasted amazing as well. My boyfriend and I split a full pound and ordered couple sides as well. Luckily we came in on a Sunday and we ordered the candied yams. The candied yams is amazing to me but my boyfriend did not like it as much as I did. I would definitely come back here! This is definitely the best BBQ I have ever ate in my life. More...

I'm so glad I came here! I drove 30 minutes for some Texas BBQ and it was well worth it.  It's so difficult to find good BBQ out here and this made me feel like I was back home in Texas.  We ordered pork ribs, brisket, potato salad, baked beans, mac'n'cheese, and buttermilk pie.  I would say the only drawback was the buttermilk pie; it wasn't like my momma's, but isn't that always the case? I can't wait to go back to try more of the meats and more of the potato salad!  OMG....and they had sweet tea that was actually sweet.  The tea was like it came straight from my kitchen. Coop's- you had me at west Texas BBQ and sweet tea. More...

I'm always encouraged by a bbq shop that serves their meat naked. A well smoked slab of anything shouldn't need to be doused and shadowed by sauce. That's what got me in the door. The brisket, the top shelf pulled pork, the hot links, and the spare ribs will be what keeps me coming back. If you fancy yourself a fan of some good Q then give this place a shot. It's proper. Coop! Where ya been all my life? Well, right here in good ol' Lemon Grove, apparently... why haven't we tried this sooner?I had the rib dinner with sides of coleslaw and baked beans. All of it was delicious. So delicious in fact that my two young girls who had never even had ribs before in their life devoured two of my four ribs... so now I have to come back! But I would be anyway; this is gonna be our go-to BBQ joint. My wife had the jerk chicken sandwich, and said it was fantastic! "Oh. My. Gosh! The most moist BBQ chicken I've ever had!" Didn't get a chance to try it...too busy defending my remaining ribs...Nuthin' fancy and that's fine by me. Napkins on a roll (aka paper towels) and sweet tea in the construction site water cooler. I love this place. It is a neighborhood standard. The food ALWAYS tastes the same. It is smoked to perfection. It is also always tender and delicious. I usually get the rib tips, on Rib Tip Tuesdays. I  highly recommend, all their meats, their greens, potato salad, and deserts. It is a small restaurant. So, you can order ahead, for to go orders, or eat in. It seats about 28 people. The only item I am not too found of is their cornbread. They give you a generous portion, but isn't moist. But, hey, there are so many other options, I ain't mad at 'em.Definitely give this place a try. You won't be disappointed. More...

Heard about this place through a friend and decided to try it out since there are hardly any good bbq places around me. As soon as you walk into the little dining room, the bbq smell overpowers you. It was pretty busy so we decided to take it all to go. The portion sizes are perfect and they also give you extra bbq sauce on the side. The four of us ordered sandwiches and with various sides. I really liked their cole slaw, it wasn't too runny which is nice. One of my friends got the red beans and rice, and I guess that he really liked it, but then my other friends got just beans but they said there was rice in theirs too so I'm not sure if that's just the house recipe or if that was just an error and they all got red beans and rice. Their cornbread is also amazing. Each time one of us took a bite, we had to make a comment about how amazing the bbq sauce is. Its just the right amount of sweet and tangy. You definitely need to check this place out! More...

Like seriously I can't believe I have not heard of this place. All the reviews/rating speak for them self. I mean this place is amazing! I pretty much have to have brisket at every barbecue place I go but I couldn't pass up the jerk chicken and all I can say is these people know their barbecue! The brisket was so juicy and tender it melted in my mouth. Just by looking at the smoke ring on the brisket I knew there was going to be a party in my mouth. I usually pass up barbecue chicken but this was jerk chicken which was also smoked and so flavorful with just the right amount of spices. Wanted to really try the candied yams but they only serve them on Sunday so I'm definitely going to be visiting soon on a Sunday lol. If you're serious about barbecue I promise you won't be disappointed! More...

Fabulous brisket  - tender, fall apart, well, but not over, seasoned...  just yummy, yummy goodness.  Now onto the mac 'n cheese - probably the best I've ever had. I don't want to know the secret because it would probably kill me. My husband raves about the collard greens - Says they're better than any we had when we lived in the South (I wouldn't  know as they'll never pass my lips...).  Grandpa had the ribs, practically falling off the bone, and some very yummy baked beans, coleslaw and cornbread. Plenty leftover for lunch the next day too!!Always a line and great, friendly service. More...

Lets start off with how amazing there bbq is. The meat has a nice smoky flavor and super tender. Some bbq joints i have to fight with the meat but at coops, its straight tender. The place is pretty small so it could get packed. They did have a bigger store at chula vista a while back but it closed down. So we ordered the knock out, 6 meats that weigh up to 3 pounds. 2 sides and cornbread. We thought it wouldnt be enough be we left happy. The meats that were super good was the pulled pork, spare rib, rib tips. We got the brisket but i was sort of dry. The brisket here feels like its hit or miss. The flavor of the meat is something different here. You dont really need to add any sauce on the meat but if you do they have some outstanding bbq sauce. They have 3 bottles. Ones hotter, and the others taste the same, jist sweeter. The staff is very nice. I will continue to come back here on there special days where some meats are cheaper. More...

Coops has some of the best Q in the county. I know, I've tried a bunch. I used to be a big fan of the place in Mission Hills that moved to Sports Arena but their prices got high and their overly sweet BBQ sauce got old so I switched. At coops you get some really good food. Nicely smoked and very flavorful. choices are typical of most good BBQ places with ribs being a big favorite. They have a meat sampler that has four items for about $25 that is enough for at least three or four meals so it is a good deal and you get to try various choices.  By far, the very best is the brisket. Super tender, cut-it-with-a-fork and on so flavorful. The only problem wit Coops is my cardiologist hates me to eat there so I try not to indulge more than once every few weeks but the food is addictive. They also do on-site catering and have many food options. Definitely a great lace to go even if a bit out of the way. More...

I've been looking for a good BBQ that wasn't Phil's BBQ. My boyfriend's mom took us here and I was excited to try this place. The cashier said we were lucky that we didn't come during the high time so I assumed this place gets really busy. They have great choices and sides at good prices. I have been all over Texas solely to sample the BBQ in the state. I have been all over the West Coast scopeing out the little joints, the hidden-away smokers. But this. Coop's West Texas BBQ in -- of all places -- Lemon Grove, California!! Everything on the menu is good, but many of the items are simply outstanding. Where do I start. Brisket. In my opinion, a BBQ joint is judged by how well their brisket is done. It's really, really easy to mess up. Coop's smokers are awesome, and his technique is perfectly repeated batch after batch (yes, I have tried many batches). The pulled pork. Outstanding. The sandwich is properly served with cole slaw -- I had Coop's old and new cole slaw recipe. I think it still needs some work, but on the pulled pork sandwich it's good. The in-house BBQ sauce is sweet and smiley. It's not chunky but it doesn't pour like water. A load of this stuff on anything is awesome. The sides -- I really like his collard greens and red beans and rice. The red beans and rice has little chunks of the brisket and the beans are cooked perfectly. The mac and cheese is good, but I really feel like this recipe could be improved. The collard greens are amazing, I get them every time I get a meal if they have them. Lastly, the chicken chips. I first had the chicken chips when Coop was offering them to patrons waiting for heir food, which he often does with his new items. I really, really like this about him. He truly wants to hear your feedback, and his menu shows it. When he told me that the chicken chips were deep fried chicken skins, I didn't like the idea of eating the skins...I am SO glad that I gave them a try! They are AMAZING! I used to get gen every time I went to Da Chicken Coop (his chicken and fish concept next door that recently closed). I'm so bummed he's not serving the chicken chips anymore and really hope he brings them back.Seriously, best BBQ in San Diego is Coop's West Texas BBQ. Make the trip out to Lemon Grove to taste it for yourself. More...
