Service was excellent, thank you Mary, our wonderfully attentive server. The decor was eloquent and quaint felt like you just may be in a little bistro in Paris. The food was on point. We shared The Coquilles St Jaques, The Niccoise Salad, and The Loup de Mer a saffron sauced seabass. Extraordinary meal. And the vibe was very friendly and relaxed. More...

Fantastic food. Tried Fois Gras for the first time (not bad, but probably wouldn't order again).  Steak frites with truffle fries was outstanding. The trout was also great as well. Great service, great food and drink menu, and it was really nice having the bar side of the restaurant available without having a reservation. More...

My experience here was great! We didn't have a reservation but were seated immediately in the smaller area of the restaurant. As soon as we sat down we were greeted by a friendly waitress. I ordered Poulet Rôti and it was amazing. Didn't take long for it to come out after we placed our order. Lovely environment and would like to visit again next time I'm in Savannah. More...

Great food! First time in Savannah and went to this restaurant with my family because of the reviews on Trip Advisor. We all ate delicious food and the only dish I did not like was the beet salad. I was disappointed that it was more of a salad with a few beets and pistachios thrown on top. More...

Chose this restaurant for the French themed dining & atmosphere. Everything was wonderful. We highly recommend the scallops as an appetizer! These were so unique and prepared in a way we had never had them before baked in a crock with breadcrumbs, gruyere cheese, & mushrooms - these were SO decadent and rich - only 2 scallops but so filling. We also had the duck breast entree & the duck confit entree - both were excellent and perfectly prepared. We are huge French fanatics and this place was perfect for us. A perfect pairing of delicious food, eclectic French decor & history. Highly recommend a trip here if you can! More...

Everything that my party had was great! The chicken livers were the best appetizer and the steak frites was delicious. The upstairs ambience is light and open. Downstairs has a more romantic vibe, and it is very dark downstairs. I recommend asking to sit upstairs if possible.Overall great experience! More...

You have to go here for a drink and bite to eat while you're in Savannah. The drinks are amazing and the bar tenders are even better. My favorite drink here is the absinthe. They even bring out the little drip fountain. Love the chocolate mousse and fries More...

One of my new favorite spots in Savannah! It felt nice enough for a special occasion but still casual enough to feel comfortable. We were seated in the wine cellar which was a cool semi/private room with just a few other tables that made conversation easy. My husband is still talking about how great the pork chop was, we'll definitely be back! More...

Beautiful little restaurant that reminds of places I dined in Paris. My friend and I sat downstairs, very romantic setting. Service was excellent and we were able to taste a couple wines before purchasing a bottle. Very helpful! Dinner was also good, desert fabulous. If you like what you see on their menu, I'd recommend you check this wonderful restaurant out! More...

I came in for dinner for a girls night out. I ordered a Tito's extra dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives. My martini was just okay. I didn't taste any olive juice in my martini. It tasted like just plain vodka. On the bright side, I love plain vodka. The blue cheese stuffed olives were a dollar extra. The dinner portion of my meal was sooo much better. I ordered a beet salad. I was impressed with the salad options! I also ordered the soup of the day which was a cauliflower soup. My soup and salad were excellent!!! The soup was so delicate and flavorful.  The other ladies ordered desserts and they loved all of them. There were a lot of great seafood option that I think my husband would love, so I'll definitely go back with him for that. They also offered lovely French fried as a side that were very tasty. We had one of the best meals in Savannah here. Our waiter Kai was very nice and recommended the grilled salad with a poached egg on top. He said to trust him. It was maybe the best salad I have ever had.My husband and I had the sea bass (regular menu) and the striped bass, which was the special. Both were excellent. We were never rushed, the meal was spaced out perfectly. The decor is lovely and interesting.I would definitely return here for another meal. A+. More...

Really adorable place, loved the blinking eiffel towers in the front and bar particularly. Bar for drinks, then main area for dinner. There was already a line out front when we arrived a few minutes before 6pm opening. If you do arrive before 6pm, visit the Paris Market next door; it's fun for poking around before your meal. Enjoyed the frisee aux lardons; the dressed frisee was tasty, the chunks of smoked pork belly put it over the top. Escargot was disappointing. It was a pile of sliced garlic in warm butter that a snail or two had crawled across. Sure, garlic with escargot, but let's balance the flavors a bit more. Cassoulet - beans were nicely cooked and flavorful. Duck was delicious. Sausage was dry and tasted only of garlic, marring what was otherwise an excellent cassoulet. If I read in the future that they've swapped out for a better sausage, I'd not hesitate to order again. Steak frites was a nice seared filet and the frites were very flavorful and hard to stop eating. More...

I began my evening at Circa 1875 with the cocktail, French 1875, a blend of vodka , St. Germaine, fresh basil, lemon topped with sparkling wine.  Very nice.  Additionally, we ordered their charcuterie tray, $32, that had a French blue and various cheeses, salami, shaved ham, strawberry jam, but it was void of any bread, crackers, cheese knives or spreader. Disappointing! I sent it back and they corrected the omissions - see photos. For dinner I ordered their Red Beet Salad that had red and golden beets, roasted pistachios, and topped with blue cheese on request.  This salad was $9.  My husband loved his Grouper special! You can't beat the ambience at Circa 1875 with low lighting, and the music of Sinatra and his peers playing on their sound system. Circa 1875 is an award winning restaurant several years in a row, but of course our experience did not meet the expectation I had or in the very least had hoped for. When in Savannah, my mom and I always go to The Olde Pink House/ Planters Inn Tavern, but since the fire that happened in December, we needed a new restaurant to enjoy and experience. After reading Yelp reviews (shout out to all my fellow Yelpers), we chose Circa 1875. When we walked in for our 6 pm reservation, we were the first table to sit and after our server's greeting, we immediately ordered escargot and scallops as an appetizer. When the server brought us the best bread, hot and soft with herbed butter on the side, we then ordered our entrees. We sat promptly at 6 and at 6:33, we still had not received our appetizers. The manager came over to visit us and apologized for the long wait and told us there was an issue with the printers but the apps would be out right away. When the escargot and scallops arrived, they were piping hot and beyond delicious. The garlic butter in the escargot was top notch and the escargot was so tender and perfectly cooked. The scallops were in a creamy sauce with some gruyere cheese and bread crumbs, and the scallops were tender. Now, fast forward to 7:18 and still no entrees. I respect not being rushed, especially in a lovely restaurant that doesn't need to "turn and burn" but for fish, it was way too long of a wait. The manager came back and apologized for the wait and offered us a complimentary dessert. At 7:24, the entrees arrived, Carolina Brook Trout with capers in a brown butter sauce with carrots. I usually am not someone who would order the same entree as my dinner companion, but fish is fish and my mom and I both wanted it. OMG this was literally on a whole other level salty. With the capers, the salt level for seasoning should have been extremely limited. The amount of salt was so intense that my mother immediately got beet red in the face, and my ankles began to swell. Nothing requires that much salt. I gave him my credit card and wanted to leave because my mom and I were hot and uncomfortable. After signing the credit card receipt, the manager came over and said, "Oh no, we can do much better!" She took my credit card again and re ran it with much more of a discount than just a complimentary dessert to go. I am disappointed that there was such a wait for both the appetizers and entrees. I am disappointed that the fish we were looking forward to all day did not meet our expectations. However, the ambiance and service is superb, and the escargot a whole other level of deliciousness. We stopped in because we saw the place from a across the street and it was just glowing and so beautiful and so inviting. It’s In a historic building built in 1875. The decor is beautiful and so well thought out. The French menu was amazing (I’m not that much of a foodie so won’t elaborate but everything I had was top notch and delicious) the wait and bar staff were amazing. We sat at the bar and the bar tender made me the most wonderful bourbon cocktail I think I’ve ever had. Shout out to our host behind the bar, Dream! She showed us real southern charm and hospitality! Highly recommended and we’ll definitely be back next time we’re in Savannah! More...

What an excellent meal my wife and I had tonight at this restaurant. I got the brook trout-lightly battered, fried, and accompanied by carrots, capers, some type of beurre sauce. Maybe one of the best prepared pieces of fish I have ever had ( and at 62 I have eaten a lot of fish). My wife had the sea bass-very lightly seasoned-just perfect. Along with excellent cocktails, we will return very soon. The bartenders were both very cordial and attentive. More...

Thanks to my GF for adding this to our list of places to go. Circa 1875 doesn't disappoint! Arriving @ about 8:00 they only had about an hour before close (and our haunting tour), but that was plenty of time.Service was good and prompt. Very good understanding of the menu and the best way to have items served. I went with the Steak Frites (steak) and they really know how to cook it properly. Came out perfectly cooked (medium) just as I ordered it. Taste was great and serving size was pretty large (plus we had been eating all day and were already stuffed). My gf went with the Margret de Canard aux Cerises (of course that's the duck). The recommendation was to get this cooked rare, but neither of us were really comfortable with that and went more to a medium well. Great taste especially dipped in the bing cherry sauce. Also, the celery root mash was an amazing side.Atmosphere is classic and classy. Name of the restaurant comes from the fact that the building is from about 1875.I would return and recommend to anyone looking for a great meal in a classy little place. More...

Freshly French! I gave this only 4 stars because our waiter, while he knew the menu well, was not very friendly, and was clearly 'just doing his job'. That aside...Ambiance : Romantic. Very French. Very date worthy.Food: oh so good! We ordered:1. The cheeseboard~ they thinly slice the meats for this, and they literally melt in your mouth! The cheeses were well chosen to pair with the pate and other items. 2. The filet- cooked well, tender with lots of flavor! The accompanying salads and sides were great as well! 3. My husband ordered the seabass, which they deboned at the table.  He said it was fresh and very good! 4. For dessert we tried the sorbet and panicotta ~ both were delicious! I would recommend this restaurant,  and will be back myself! More...

I went here when I was visiting Savannah for a work trip and was very impressed. We walked by and decided to try it out having no previous information about the place. The service was outstanding. Our server was Rick. Although he may have been a little turned off by our, let's say "abrasive", conversation he was attentive to our needs, charming, and handsome. His wine recommendation was absolutely on point to our tastes. Now that I think about it, Savannah ladies, he's probably a good catch. I had the venison and it was superb. It was a special so I'm not sure if it's on the regular menu. I started off with a spinach salad with raspberry vinaigrette.  I also highly recommend. My friends salad was actually much better.  When I asked her what it was called she said "Frisée aux lardons I think it was It was quite fantastic. Especially with the poached egg on top!" Her words speak better than mine.  Overall it had a great atmosphere, great service and great food. More...

After spending a long time in Savannah working I heard about this place many times. You have to try this place. The food is awesome and the drinks are strong. So being a huge foodie I made my way here. The place is in 2 main rooms. A bar and a finer dining restaurant. The decor is old day french even our server had an accent. My table mate for the evening was a newbie to many of the dishes that we were going to enjoy.  I ordered some things that she has never seen yet put in her mouth. I started us out with Escargot prepared in the traditional way. They were mighty tasty too. We also had their Coquilled St. Jacques or broiled scallops in a thick gruyere sauce. We quickly moved into their Grilled lamb chops and local sea bass served on the bone which was removed table side. Impressive to say the least. To finish our dinner we went for their chocolate mousse and the real deal classic creme brûlée. Our dinner was really good and service was impeccable. It was a very enjoyable dinner and an eyeopener in fine dining for my table mate. More...

Without question, Circa is the best restaurant in Savannah. We have lived here for two-plus years now, having first visited five years ago, and few restaurants in the city are as well-staffed, reliable, and consistent at such a high level. From the outstanding quality of the professional service to the thoughtfully traditional French cuisine, every bit of Circa is legitimate. The true sign of a French resto's authenticity is its execution of a roasted chicken: perfect. The escargots are spot-on. The truite is straight-up Provençale. And though I hesitate to put this in print and spoil the secret, the burger is the best in the city - and it is twelve bucks...with exceptional frites. On a coldish 'winter' night, Circa is warm and cozy, a true Parisian bistro. In the nicer weather, the atmosphere is just as charming, especially on the bustling brasserie side. A meal for two - with wine and an appetizer or dessert - is not cheap, but it is worth every penny and then some. More...

This is my favorite dinner spot in all of Savannah.  The only downside is that they're closed Sunday nights.  They have a cozy atmosphere that makes you feel like you're sitting in Paris.  The music is wonderful, and they have a good wine selection.  It's the perfect spot for a romantic evening.  My husband and I come here on special occasions, and decided to bring our visiting parents here for dinner.  They all said it was their favorite restaurant of their 4 night stay.  I think their filet mignon is the best in Savannah.  My husband always orders the lamb.  We ordered escargot for the table, which I thought was delicious, and my mom couldn't stop raving over the cheese platter.  The only complaint I had was that our table wasn't ready at our reserved time, so we had to wait at the bar and I think they gave us a different table than the one they had intended to give us.  They have a large table in the middle of the restaurant, that I was hoping we would get, but it looked like the party before us was taking too long, so they settled us into a booth at the front.  The booth made me feel claustrophobic, as there was only one side for 3 of us to squeeze in, due to the small size of the restaurant.  If we come back with a large party again, I think I'll request the center table.  It would be worth the wait. Magnificent in every way: The salad: The frisée was lightly grilled, the lardon succulent and the egg perfectly poached, all amplified by a tangy cider-mustard dressing. Magnificent scallops (Coquille St. Jacques) not marred by too much breading, creamy but not cloying. Then on to wonderful trout, veal cheeks, swordfish and one of the best cassoulet I've had the privilege to eat -- again, creamy without too much breading, and the duck and flageolet beans were the platonic ideal. Duvet on draft -- thank you, God. And all served by the attentive and warm Sean. A destination restaurant. More...

We had booked a reservation here for our wedding night and we were not disappointed! We asked for a nice romantic table and they gave us the best table in the place, a little table in the corner that was secluded away. We loved it. Michael our server (Who was dressed as ghandi for Halloween) was excellent. There was an event downtown and they were packed, but he took care of us without missing a beat! The food was delicious! We had the Cassoulet Maison and my wife had the Crepes aux Crevettes. Both were made perfectly. We will definitely be back next time we are in Savannah! More...

Really outstanding. I would presume anyone who didn't recommend this place had never been to France. The menu is a perfect melange of Paris Bistro favorites. The mussels were impeccable... perfectly scented with fennel. Fabulous frittes... everything was delicious. Extra props for the service and particularly the wine knowledge of the staff. I only wish this wasn't such a tourist town... perhaps the woman sitting next to us would have taken the recommended Bourgogne Rouge with her quail as apposed to ruining it with Washington State Cabernet... but... as they say, C'est la Vie! Very solid French food in Savannah! I came here for dinner with my husband on our first night in Savannah. It was easy to make a reservation on Open Table and the staff was extremely friendly! The ambiance was fantastic and I felt like I was sitting in a cafe in Paris! We ordered the Coquilles St. Jacques to start. It was essentially sea scallops baked into a sort of casserole-like cheese with sautéed mushroom, breadcrumbs and other garnishes. The sea scallops were superb! Very fresh and delicious. It tasted perfect and flavorful with the combo of gruyere cheese and mushrooms. Only complaint here was that the sea scallops were slightly cold, but definitely didn't take away from the freshness and deliciousness!I ordered the Loup de Mer- their roasted sea bass. The gave me almost the full fish, without the head or tail, and the waiter deboned it in front of me. The fish was super fresh and quite delicious with the saffron sauce. It paired well with the roast potatoes (just the right amount of garlic and herbs). I also got a side of sautéed mushrooms which were slightly disappointing for $7. They weren't very flavorful despite swimming in a butter sauce. My husband got the Crepes aux Crevettes, shrimp with a veggie crepe. It surprisingly was super filling. The dish came with a surprisingly generous amount of shrimp- AMAZING- that were perfectly seasoned and fresh. It tastes even better with the bechamel sauce. And for a guy that doesn't like vegetables, my husband was very pleased with the crepe that was oozing with fresh veggies and bechamel.Overall, such a lovely dining experience! Hope to return in the near future! More...

This is my favorite gourmet restaurant in town. I love sharing this place with others. I came here with a friend and she had the best time. The staff is always very pleasant and knowledgeable. Our waitress gave us an excellent wine recommendation that paired so we'll with our seafood. The food was and is always cooked so perfectly. To start, I always get the charcuterie board, it's by far the best in town. I was a little reluctant when they substituted the chicken mousse for the pate, but it was a hit out of the park ! The mousse was so light and smooth. They prepare and cure the meats for the board at the restaurant and they support local farmers by buying locally. They change their menu with what's in season and there's never a miss. You could select anything on the menu and not be disappointed. This is the quintesscential restaurant that demonstrated how good food should taste, I love this place ! More...

We recently enjoyed a trip to Savannah and had the very good fortune to have drinks and dinner at Circa 1875, pub and restaurant. We loved the entire experience and would recommend this establishment to anyone wanting a delicious meal surrounded by lovely, professionally-trained people in a relaxed, unpretentious setting. We started out in the quaint pub which is attached to the restaurant. We like to sit at the bar and kibitz with staffers. We found ourselves being attended to by one Tony, bartender extraordinaire and his TWO lovely helpers (this place was BUSY). We laughingly received an entire mixology class as Tony demonstraited the full variety of techniques needed to accommodate the many requests coming his way. Very fun. The entire bar was very busy and filled with a wide variety of people. Young, old, families, dates, gay and straight. A very eclectic and happy crowd. Most were stylishly dressed but several people had on dark jeans and didn't look out of place in the least. It's not really a quiet place and one could easily bring well-behaved youngsters there and feel comfortable. We had checked in early and when our table was ready we were fetched by the host and our drinks carried for us to our terrific table located against the eastern wall of the restaurant.A word about the ambiance. It's a BUSY, eclectically-styled space. It looks and feels genuinely and pleasingly old and features LARGE cheek-by-jowl posters and some original artwork  hung alongside touches of the french tricolour. Much of the art is Art Nouveau in style. Many large, dark antique pieces are put to good use as serving stations. The walls are painted a subdued, mossy green (think Martha Stewart) which works beautifully against the pop of color afforded by the posters and other regalia. The ceiling is very high and a focal point were the three large front windows each of which were festooned with the aforementioned tricolour ribbon. Very effective. Indirect lighting is intelligently used throughout the space and the overall feeling was one of warmth. Now to the food.I'm afraid our review may disappoint as we both ordered the same dish! We are both conventional in our tastes and we are red meat fanatics. Also, we learned a long time ago that a good French restaurant will almost invariably have a wonderful steak! So, both of us ordered the ribeye and these proved to be some of the best steaks we've had in some time. The dish came with a red wine sauce and we also ordered the sautéed mushrooms and Béarnaise sauce to split (plenty for two). The (large!) steaks came with french fries which were very good. Crisp, well-seasoned and piping hot. The meat was perfectly marbled, tender and juicy. Just succulent. I THINK that if I ordered this dish again I might request that the red wind sauce be left off. It was lovely but I think I might have been happier with just the meat and the Béarnaise. For dessert, I had Chocolate Mousse (I told you I'm conventional) and my husband, the raspberry fanatic, ordered a classic raspberry Mille-feuille. Both were a religious experience. Our waitress (I believe her name was Mary?) was very good. She was the tiniest bit slow to suggest drink refills, but otherwise was lovely and very attentive. Each member of the wait-staff was of a type: older, professionally friendly, unobtrusive and very well-informed. No hipster types (which we, as older people ourselves, tend to deplore. Hipster barkeep: yes!  Hipster waitstaff: not so much!).I visited the ladies room after dinner. It is located on the back wall of the establishment and I discovered that there is a back passageway between the bar and the dining room. The restrooms are situated between the two areas. Immediately in front of the restrooms is located what seems to be a main staging area for the waitstaff. BEAUTIFULLY styled, it serves as workstation for breads, drinks etc. As I waited my turn, I had an opportunity to observe the waitstaff working together. I was struck with the level of coordination and collegiality amongst the rather large group. This area served both the bar and the dining room and yet everyone seemed to be functioning quite well together in this tight little hive. Happy smiles all around. Time to go and we were seen off by the host who escorted us to the door and bid us a good night and an invitation to join them again when next we are in Savannah...we will! More...

Wow. What an absolutely fantastic meal and excellent service! We only had two nights in Savannah so I heavily researched our dining options before settling on Circa 1875 and it was the right choice! Devine French food that is cooked to perfection. I had the California Pinot Noir with dinner - light for a Pinot which I loved! For starters we had the French onion soup. Although I've had this soup many places, hands down this is the best one I've ever tasted. (Including soups I've had in Paris!) For the main meal, I had the chicken and mashed potatoes. This might seems like an odd choice but the chicken was moist and perfectly cooked and the mashed potatoes were excellent. I'll dream about them for days to come. Highly recommend adding this restaurant to your itinerary!!! More...

We made a reservation and glad we did. There was a large wait, even for our reserved table, so they shuttled us to their bar for drinks until our table was ready. We were led to a quaint room, downstairs, where we had terrific service from our waiter. The food was good, but seemed to be just a tad shy of seasoning. If you love the feel and flavors of Paris, you will love this restaurant.  If you have never been to Paris, you will still love it! The beaux arts decor and ambiance was both elegant and welcoming, each table was graced with a fresh rose, and the candlelit room was lit low enough for no one to notice my fine lines and wrinkles but bright enough to read the menu without difficulty.  As for that menu...it is a delight. Is someone in your party not an adventurous eater? Don't worry! They have steak and fries or roast chicken and mashed potatoes. Is someone else a gourmand? Again, don't worry! This menu will please even the fussiest foodie. Along with the regular menu items there are also daily specials. The service was wonderful and our waitress was incredibly personable and knowledgeable.  Every course was exquisitely prepared.  The breadbasket, which contained a sour dough baguette and fluffy yeast rolls, was served with soft herbed butter.  The mussels were absolutely amazing, as was the soup du jour (carrot ginger dressed with a silky bechamel). And the duck fat fried truffle frites? OMG! Order them as an appetizer for your table. You will not be disappointed. My pan roasted sea bass was served whole without head and tail and was skillfully deboned by the waitress at the table - although you can expect a few pin bones. The skin was like crispy bacon and the white flesh was soft, moist, flakey perfection. The wine list is affordable and unpretentious and there is also a nice cocktail menu.  I will definitely go back the next time I am in Savannah. More...

My husband and I had only one night in Savannah, but made the most of it by doing pre-dinner drinks and snacks at a couple spots around town, including Circa 1875. When you enter, you feel like you've traveled back in time to turn of the century Paris. Heavy wood bar, tall boys, stained glass, you instantly feel like you should be drinking absinthe and talking about art. With that in mind, we really enjoyed the cocktail menu, which features classic drinks to pair with a really classic French menu. We enjoyed the Cuisses de Grenouilees Lyonnaise (Frog Legs - first time for me!) and the Plateau du Chef (Charcuterie Board), while sipping on champagne cocktails and Moscow Mules. Other classic menu items that oozed Paris include the Ratatouille, Cassoulet Maison and Escargots. We sat at the bar, a space towards the end that was a cozy spot for 2, which felt like we had our own private booth. Bartender was friendly and attentive, food was really delicious. The website for the spot bills itself as "Unpretentious French Cuisine & Gastro Pub", which sounds impossible due to the nature of gastropubs in general - but I have to agree that this place lives up to that claim. Great food, great ambiance and no attitude, just amazing on all levels. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and will consider it a must-do spot for future Savannah visits. More...

Visit Date: March 8, 2016After learning this was a french gastropub I had to make a reservation to eat here with my husband during our stay in Savannah. I am giving it 4 stars because of the atmosphere and because most of what we ate was very good but I was slightly disappointed in the lack of vegetarian options. I had to scour through the menu just to find a few things I could eat. Our cheese plate that we sampled for the appetizer was just okay. We didn't like two of the three cheeses featured on the plate/cheese board because they were more of a blue cheese type and we don't like blue cheese. The fruit, jelly and one cheese that was not like blue cheese were good. I had the tomato bisque and a salad. Both were pretty good, the tomato bisque had great flavor. They also served bread with their own herb butter. The herb butter was interesting and tasty. My recommendation if you are visiting Savannah and looking for one fine meal go with the Olde Pink House over Circa 1875. More...

I'm a sucker for a good French bistro and this place was well worth the price.  My hubby took me here for our anniversary...and they really rolled out the customer service for us.  They had a great table reserved for us and what seemed like their best waiter who was so attentive and nice and really took care of us.We started with the escargot, which I had never had before -- foodie that I am! -- and I was a bit tentative at first.  But...I got one smell of the collision of butter and garlic swimming before me and I couldn't resist.  Holy Wow!  I'm a fan.  The escargot simply melted in my mouth...cooked perfectly and so juicy and delicious.  We paired it with the homemade French bread and rolls they brought to the table.  Absolutely phenomenal! My husband had steak and frites.  The steak was cooked to perfection with herbed butter over the top of it.  The frites were drizzled with truffle oil (which can be overdone, but not this time) and sea salt and simply melted in your mouth.  (We've gone back twice just for the frites!)  I had the coq au vin and it was simply scrumptious.  Served on a bed of egg noodles, the chicken was tender and juicy and the rich sauce stood up to the vegetables and herbs.  I had to share it with my husband so he could enjoy the flavors, as well. The wine list was reasonably priced with a lot to choose from, although I just love a good bottle of Côtes du Rhône.  For dessert, we were treated with a large portion of complimentary (for our anniversary) profiteroles with creamy ice cream and thick, thick fudge.  Mmmm...Love this place and highly recommend the bistro for that special occasion or if you're in the mood for a lovely dining experience.  The gastro pub next to it has a wonderful menu of similar items in a more casual atmosphere....but the same great staff and service.  Go there! Wonderful. The chefs appetizer was pork belly that was in a reduction sauce with barley, leek, and mushroom plated on the side.  These three flavors went together perfectly.  Our server, Steven, accommodated our appetites by suggesting we split the salad of the day which was delicately served with poached pears and cheese over baby spinach and was delicious. The entrees were served timely, hot and were generous in size. The richness of the  shrimp crepe was complimented by the crispness of the vegetables also inside, all covered in bechemel sauce.  Our server was delightful and attentive.  The addition of cocktails and dessert raised the cost quite a bit but worth it for what turned out to be the right combination of fine food, and relaxing atmosphere making a great evening.  Also , not a place for kids IMHO. You come here for the ambience and decor.  You come here more than twice the staff remembers you. They've got this incredibly romantic booth for two only. Or tables for 12, it's tight and dark and you wouldn't want it any other way. More...

Some of the finest food I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying. My wife and I visited for a weekend trip in Savannah. She had the braised lamb shank, which fell off the bone and was full of flavor. She asked to make a substitution of the cous cous it is normally served on for mashed potatoes and that was no problem. I had the Coq au Vin which was served on a bed of egg style noodles. (This was on special that night)It was a religious experience, the flavor just permeated the dish and the noodles soaked up the sauce to make for a wonderful combination.  The sauce is rich, and there are nice chunks of lardon bacon mixed throughout the dish to give you that extra flavor and which worked as a contrasting texture to the perfectly cooked chicken thighs. Circa also offers Absinthe service, which we had not imbibed in for ages - so we had some (Lucid Brand).  There's a small selection of Scotch, and a very nice wine list to pair with practically any meal. We will be making the trip just to visit as often as possible. The service was also excellent, quick, and very friendly. More...

Cute French restaurant in Savannah! I loved the decor and how they really worked to make the space feel like a Parisian cafe. I ordered the duck breast with the bing cherry sauce and celery root mash. It was superb and the bing cherry sauce really added that nice bit of sweet to the saltiness of the duck. I'd highly recommend that dish or my friends raved about the trout. I'd say - whether a local or visitor - you should make a reservation to Circa when in downtown. You won't regret it. More...

From the moment we walked in until we left, we couldn't have asked for a better meal or better experience.  We were on the restaurant side, which had the small, cozy feel of a French cafe, although they do have downstairs seating so can hold more customers than you'd think. The staff are friendly and attentive. To be honest, we came for the escargot...which were a buttery, garlicky masterpiece. The rest of the meal kept pace with the escargot. Simply prepared, no frills, delicious course after course. We randomly picked our own wine pairings off the wine board, and each selection was excellent. Kudos to their sommelier for composing a selection that perfectly pairs with their food. Thank you for a wonderful meal and evening. More...

I lived in Germany for seven years and ate French cuisine many a time.  Circa ranks up there with the European bistros without a doubt.  I took my wife here for our first anniversary and the staff was 5 stars from the start.  We checked in a little early and immediately were greeted with a happy anniversary and were escorted downstairs to the wine cellar for a romantic setting.  Yeah, that may sound creepy, but it was actually very quiet and less hustle bustle than the upstairs, and romantic.  So the waiter was awesome and met our every need, but I will complain on one thing.  The food was average for "French cuisine".  The waiter claimed that everything was fresh, however the scallop appetizer and my rack of lamb did not scream of the freshness that I am used to.  The food was great, don't get me wrong, but definitely not worth the $140 that we spent for just us two.  It is definitely priced 25% higher than it should be.  We'll come back for sure, but not on a special occasion or ready to spend what we did that night.  I'll give it 4 stars solely on the staff.  Other than that, the food is a 3. First time in Savannah and at Circa 1875. What an awesome meal! We actually opted to only order an array of appetizers but enjoyed them all!! Atmosphere was quaint and classy, service was superb, we felt like VIPs. The fried bacon, Lardon, was outstanding we even ordered more to have on our charcuterie board! Wine list is plentiful and the cocktails are delicious. We watched as another table of patrons did absinthe from an interesting contraption- I wish we were brave enough to try (couldn't convince the wife). Will definitely return next time we are in Savannah! More...

Circa 1875 was great.  We started with the Fromage.  The combination of the cheese and sweetness of the grapes made great contrasting flavors.  My wife had the salmon and I had the duck.  Both were cooked perfectly and seasoned ever so lightly by tastefully.  It was really great. More...

Absolutely love this place! Visiting Savannah and looked up places for wine,  and Circa 1875 came up.  We sat at the bar and Ian took care of us. 28 September 2015

I took my girlfriend here on Saturday evening for my birthday dinner and we had dinner in the wine cellar downstairs. Here's a trip: If you'd like a little quieter of a room, with about 8-10 tables and totally away from the commotion of the upstairs dining room, then book the wine cellar well in advance. We shared the mussels, then I had the duck and she had the brook trout. Although the brook trout was tasty, I liked my duck much more. The duck was cooked almost like a pork tenderloin, and it was full of flavor. Out of these three dishes, my favorite was the duck if you like that particular texture. The mousse was for dessert. It was more of a milk chocolate mousse (I'm more of a dark chocolate person), but nonetheless it was fantastic. The ambiance of the wine cellar and the attentiveness of our server exceeded our highest expectations. This place makes you feel comfortable while holding a romantic element. This is a somewhat hidden gem within Savannah that the locals appreciate and take pride in.Worth coming back for sure. Wow. I didn't expect Savannah to have good French food, but they nailed it!We came here with a large group, and the staff was very friendly and patient with us! Haha. The walls were decorated with the old advertisements  we know so well.  Our group shared several appetizers, my favorites being the escargot, foie gras, and chicken livers. For dinner, I had the "Loup de Mer", a gigantic serving of Sea Bass cooked to heavenly perfection, based on my amazing waiter's recommendation. It was fantastic. And, we shared about every dessert! A wise choice, for sure. More...

This place bills itself as unpretentious French cuisine. I've always thought that if, you know, you have to say it . . . But this place wasn't trying to strain to seem unpretentious. The atmosphere was relaxed, with butchers paper serving as tablecloths, walls a pale green in need of a new coat of paint, the serving plates were unadorned and mismatched, and none of it seems deliberate or planned. What added to my belief in its unpretentiousness was the server, who had made some kind of deal decades ago back in Michigan with the owners to open a place should they all be at a particular spot in their lives. Apparently they got to that spot. She was skilled at detecting what phase of the meal and how much interaction and attention we needed to be comfortable. We were on a dinner date, and she was swift with getting the alcohol out, and taking pauses in between the appetizers and entrees. We weren't rushed despite arriving at around 9:45 and having a full three course dinner and after dinner drinks. What was also nice was that the owners and chef were present and they were having dinner near the door. They stopped people as they were leaving to ask them how their experience was and asking patrons about their lives. It felt warm. The food did not match the superb atmosphere and quality of service. It was not poor by any measure, and several of the dishes were excellent. The cheese plate was fragrant, even if the jam that came with it was a little on the sweet side. The garlic for the escargot was freshly chopped, as opposed to pressed or prepared, which made it excellent. The truffle frites were spot on, but the mussels and Carolina trout were nothing to write home about. Overall, this place is an excellent example of how perfect service and atmosphere can elevate a three star place to a four star place that would be a staple for me if I lived here. More...

I met up with a friend at Circa 1875, and it was lovely. The bar is nice and reminds me of Old Towne Bar in New York. I didn't have dinner but I had the escargots and a couple of glasses of wine. We had a group of eight and dined on the more restaurant side of things.  The place is charming with interesting artwork and tapestry.  Really it is hard to hate on the restaurant other than being french (I have a long history of distaste for french food).  The staff seems like it has been there forever and the restaurant exudes a warm hospitality throughout your dining experience. The food is good, nothing amazing, but definitely not bad.  I had the steak and frites they were typical of a french restaurant: mediocre cut, served nicely, nothing to write home about.  The others in my party all seemed happy enough with their orders.Overall it is intimate and welcoming.  Probably a local favorite, but also a good spot for out-of-towners.  Much better than the crap on River Street. We found this restaurant on Open Table and made a reservation while in town recently for a friend's wedding. We wanted to have a nice romantic dinner before heading out on the town. There are two doors to enter, but you'll want the one on the right for the dining, and the one on the left seems to be more of a bar area. We arrived a few minutes late for our reservation, and our table was ready and waiting. They also take your coats and hang them up which I thought was nice. (The real reason might be that the chairs are so lightweight that they'll fall backwards if you hang your coat there!)The ambiance is really nice here, and the service was great. We started off with the french onion soup, which had more of a basil taste than what you'd expect. It was pretty good. My husband got one of the salads, and we ended ups splitting the chicken breast meal. It really wasn't anything to write home about; it was just okay. The mashed potatoes almost tasted instant, and the green beans didn't have any special seasoning. We did order truffle fries to share, and they were pretty darn delicious. Honestly, I wish we had just came into the bar side and gotten a beer and some truffle fries rather than eat a heavy meal. The portions were large, so even though we shared a meal we were stuffed. It was also pretty expensive for what we ended up getting. I don't think we'll come back for fine dining, but I would go back for those truffle fries! More...

We dined with a party of six on a cold, rainy night. We were seated in the wine cellar, which was cozy and warm. The cellar was also much quieter than the upstairs dining area, which is adjacent to the lively gastro pub. Our spot made for easy conversation. Our server was pleasant, attentive, and knowledgable about the menu. It was nice that she mentioned the price of one of the specials so we were forewarned it cost a lot more than other entrees.     The crab cake appetizer was delicious; big chunks of sweet crab, and nice dressings and garnish on the side. The roasted beet salad (with arugula and goat cheese) and Caesar salad were also great. The bread and rolls with herbed butter are amazing!     Our party's entrees included duck, ratatouille crepes, ribeye with truffle fries, and 3 orders of trout with butter caper sauce and glazed carrots. Wow! The portions were plentiful and all was cooked to perfection.     We were too full to check the dessert menu this time, but we will be back! My only suggestion: they should move the sign (it's on the bar side) or place an additional one over the restaurant. No one in our party had any idea this French restaurant has been here for over six years, and we frequently dine downtown. We all just thought it was a nice looking pub. I'm glad we found the rave reviews online to lead to make reservations here! Circa 1875 is one of our new favorite places to eat in downtown Savannah. More...

While the restaurant itself was on the smaller side, the food was ABSOLUTELY phenomenal.Pros- The food was beyond delicious. The pâté and duck are on point- the service and staff was amazing- I loved the decor- located conveniently in Savannah's historic districtCons- the venue itself was on the smaller side and the space was tight. My husband and I were trying to escape for a date night so we decided to revisit circa because the last time we were there we were in a huge group and had to eat on the pub side and neither of us remembered it that well! I called at 5 pm to get a reservation. There were none available but the hostess suggested we try the pub side -first come first serve. While it was busy, we were fortunate and got the last table!  The locals all popped their heads around the corner over the next hour to see if this hidden table was free! The food & service were great. It is clean and non smoking. They have about 8 beers on tap and many bottled beers. The wine selection is good. It does go to the French side more as this is a French restaurant. We really enjoyed ourselves! More...

The scallop appetizer was perfection and we loved the french onion soup. I could live on their warm bread, die and be in heaven. I ordered the lobster Thermidor as an entree and it was simply outstanding. Other meals at the table included duck and the bone-in ribeye. Great experience, starting with Nancy, the hostess.  Made a reservation on-line for a busy Saturday night.  Traffic on I-95 was awful, so I called and asked for a later time (one that had not been available on-line).  She almost groaned but said "We'll work it out."  An hour later I called and asked to delay it another 75 minutes -- she recognized my voice (or plight) that time.  She said "Come here as soon as you can; we will be ready for you."  We got there at our third estimated time and they had a table ready.  Wound up sitting next to a delightful couple -- my wife and the woman had a good friend in common.  Took his recommendation on the Tilapia instead of the salmon and it was terrific.  Shared a wonderful dessert.  HIGHLY recommended. Eating or drinking at this place felt like I was magically transported to Paris. The cramped tables, boisterous and friendly crowd, the decorations and the smells reminded me of bistros in the 2nd arrondissement. If you get a chance, try to get a table in the wine cellar, very intimate and romantic. I would give five stars because everything was a 5...it's just that the highly recommended pork dish didn't blow my mind as promised. It was still great though. J and I stopped in here on our last night in town for a casual & early dinner.  We sat in the bar area and immediately fell in love with the atmosphere.  Tin pressed tiles on the ceiling and walls, the bar had a couple of stained glass decorated wood dividers separating parts of the bar into little cubbies - if you sat there it was almost like you had your own private room at the bar.  Super cute, dark, romantic atmosphere.  We split the chef's plate (a massive plate of prosciutto, salami, house made pate, stilton, st. andre, aged porter cheddar cheeses, tomato jam and crusty bread) and a couple of salads & brussels sprouts lardons.  Both of us had a couple of drinks.  Our waiter was super attentive & nice (didn't catch his name but I think he was Australian).  Good food, drinks, ambience & service.  Great place to people watch.  We will definitely come back here next time we're in Savannah. We were visiting a family friend, a native of Savannah, who took us here.  What does that tell you? The atmosphere/setting is described as, "authentic old world bistro." I describe it as...French. My husband had the Soupe à l'oignon Gratinée (Onion Soup) and said it was delicious! My friend and I divided an order of Mussels, very tasty. The bread was freshly baked, came hot and was served with herb butter.  Both our friend and I ordered the Truite de Ruisseau Poele (Pan-Dressed Carolina Brook Trout) and it was to die for! The portion was so big, I took part of it home and although I never reheat my fish leftovers, I did this one and it was just as good as it was the night before! My husband had the Steak Frites. It was perfectly cooked and so large, that he took some home as well. Our waiter recommended a very nice bottle of red wine, which was perfect for both the steak and fish.Dessert? Their oven was out the night we dined so it limited our options.  I had the steak and frites.  NY strip was very tender and cooked to my spec.  I opted for truffle oil on the frites, I would not do this again.  Just added too much oil to an item already cooked in oil.  Another diner in my group had the trout.  When I return, will likely order this as it was complimented with capers... and l love them.  Another diner had the vegetable crepe and she felt it was the best meal in our days in Savannah (she is vegetarian).  Ordered a bottle of the 2008 Domaine Gabriel Billard.  I think it could have benefited from a decanting.  Tight, med-high acid, bright, medium finish.  Waiter did offer to decant, however, declined as I was planning to leave with some in the bottle.  (oops... this did not happen :)Service was very attentive.  Only glitch was in mixing the two plates with the truffle oil added to the fries.  We did not catch this until a few minutes into the meal. One of my regular haunts in town.  I mostly love it because it's not a place that annoying tourists go to.  It doesn't hurt that my friends are good friends with the chef, either.  Two sides to this place: one side is the restaurant and the other is the bar.  You can eat at either side.  We mainly occupy the bar side.    Now, both side are pretty tight so don't think you're going to have a lot of room.  You're all on top of everyone.  My favorites:  the chicken livers.  I never NOT get the chicken livers. They are perfectly fried and rich and decadent. But it's the gravy they come with and the squishy bread they are served on that puts this dish over the edge.  Oh man.The steak and frites are a no brainer as well. Perfectly cooked and the frites are crispy and perfectly seasoned. Now that I moved away from home and I'm out in the desert where seafood scares me, I always get the mussels.  They are delicious.  HUGE portion and I eat the broth with a spoon (this is equivalent to drinking wine and a stick of butter with a spoon). went here during a ladies' weekend. the decor is so so lovely and gives great ambiance. service was excellent and food was delicious. slightly limited menu, but still a nice variety. the meal started out with wonderful complimentary warm bread and butter for the table. the escargot we ordered as an app was the only negative - a little earthier and oilier than we preferred, and seemed to need more salt or some other ingredient. the garlic-oil it was in was great for bread-dipping though. i ordered the duck a l'orange, but substituted the brussels sprouts for the cabbage. everything on my plate was delicious and devoured. my friends ordered the steak frites and the cassoulet - both very tasty as well. for a dessert, we split the bread pudding. so good. had a wonderful meal and thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant. Good food. Be careful where you sit on a cool night. Kitchen staff and customers go in and out the two doors across the bar to smoke all night. Frequent blasts of cold, smoky air all night. More...

Warning! $$$ not $$.  Most entrees are around $28 with no frills.  There is a huge difference between $11 and $28 (+$2+$3+....).  Having said that the food and service was fantastic.  French cuisine prepared very nicely.  They also have a bar which if you are more in the mood for drinking and being with friends I would suggest that side.  We ate.  I managed to get the steak which was one of the better steaks I have had in a while.  The clam chowder with bacon bits..delish.  Add truffle fries...yes please!  They have a good section of wine and servers who actually know how to serve it my wife was sort of surprised and didn't know what to do...snicker.  They still has Christmas decor up but the interior was very classic French.  It was almost like eating in an upscale French Cracker Barrel sans the overboard retro look.  My party really enjoyed the food and the restaurant despite our surprise when we looked at the menu prices.  Overall, we really enjoyed our experience. Reasonably priced French offerings in a gorgeous atmosphere. We popped in on a rainy Saturday night and were able to get a spot in the bar side as opposed to the dining room side.  It was cozy yet elegant and we really enjoyed the soft Pink Martini / Sinatra / Buble music in the background, though the chatter certainly got louder as the evening went on. The escargots were fantastic, and one of our party enjoyed the french dip while the other devoured the burger.  We will definitely return! More...

Stopped in here on a cold, rainy Saturday evening for an appetizer and glass of wine - I couldn't have been more delighted! The ambiance is fantastic (in the bar area; we didn't eat in the restaurant part) and the service was great. We got the chicken liver appetizer, which was good, though I was a little surprised they were more deep fried than sauteed as the menu said. I don't know why this place only has 2 $$ signs as it's rating...it's very spendy. Entrees were $27-$35 per person. $16 for a french dip sandwich!  Pssssh.  I'm no fool.  If you're in spendy mode, I would definitely eat dinner here- otherwise, just pop in for a drink and enjoy the atmosphere. If ever you are in the Savannah area, you should give this restaurant a try.  You have a couple of options... If you are in the mood for a quiet, more intimate dinner, dine on the restaurant side... Otherwise, do what we did and dine on the bar side. It's lively, fun, lots of great Sinatra-style music played, and there are even some semi-private seats at the bar you can grab for dinner, which we did, and it was great. If you like chicken livers, they have a chicken liver appetizer that is to die for- so incredibly tasty, and very different than I've cooked before.   My lamb shank was very tasty and my dining partner had the cassoulet which he was getting for a second time because it was that good. For dessert- get the crepes Suzette-- it was simply delicious!! Served with a scoop of ice cream and drizzled with a slight bit of orange goodness- I'm not an orange fan and this was lovely! I found Circa 1875 on Yelp.  My partner and I chose to dine at Circa 1875 while attending the first day of a conference at the nearby Hilton Desoto.Pros - The setting and decor are beautiful.  We debated between dining in the pub area or main dining room.  Both are very cool.  We chose to dine in the main dining area.  We dined on a Wednesday night so the pub and upper dining area were only half full, however the lower area was packed full for a private event.  Our food was excellent!  I dined off their vegetarian options while my partner chose a steak and fries option with additional side items.  Our bread basket was fresh and tasty.  The wine selection was excellent and fair priced.  We had a bottle of cab that was pefect.  We split a dessert that was sized and priced right.Cons - The large private event on their lower level was taxing the wait staff on the evening we dined.  Our service was somewhat slow and disjointed.  Not bad service, but when one is spending over $100 for dinner on a Wednesday night I expected better.  Our servers were knowledgeable and friendly.  We like this place and look forward to dining here in the future. Stopped in for dinner on vacation - really enjoyed the mussels, a beet salad w/ poached egg and burger, plus dessert. Cocktails were strong and full of flavor and the atmosphere was nice, not too loud/quiet, too bright/dark, or too pretentious. Our meal was in the $$ range, but it would be very easy to head out of here with a bill closer to $50/person. More...

We've been back to Circa several times since my previous review, and my glowing review still stands. The bar area is dimly lit and cozy, and perfect for drinks and appetizers. Swanky French music and old school American classics play in the background and create a romantic atmosphere. Service is consistently prompt and professional. I recommend the chicken livers appetizer and the chef's plate for two. It's humongous and satisfying: several types of gourmet meats, chutney, cheese, grapes, and baguette. Perfect for a romantic dinner, but also great for a date night of cocktails and appetizers. More...

Great.  Terrific.  Fabulous!  What else can I say?  Our dining experience was simply outstanding in every aspect.  Great service!  Everyone there contributed to a wonderful meal.  They were very busy but handled it quite well.  Escargot and mussel appetizers were excellent.  Steaks cooked to perfection and quite tender.  Berries and cream dessert with coffee.  One of the best meals we've had in awhile.  Highly recommended! We made a reservation and were not expecting a anything special but the experience was excellent. The service was wonderful and the dinner was expertly prepared and presented. I had the chicken livers ( I know but they were delicious) and the pork chop which was perfectly made. My wife had the steak frites and spinach which was as good as anything we had in Boston or Manhattan. The atmosphere was eclectic.; Several couples in the restaurant and groups in the pub. The restaurant has a charming interior decorated like a French bistro with a delightful wait staff. The food, while not exotic, was excellent and well prepared. When someone walked in with their dog the waitress promptly had them removed at my request. I would hope though that she would have done so anyway, but I am not sure. AS AN ASIDE TO ALL OF YOU SELF-ABSORBED, AROGANT POSERS.; I DON'T WANT TO EAT WHERE YOUR EXCREMENT EATING, GENITAL LICKING, SHEDDING PET IS PRESENT. OK first off for anyone who's trying to decide whether to eat here in the next 5 minutes, Circa 1875 should really be listed as $$$. $12 burgers, $30 steaks, the four of us were definitely surprised. Fortunately, the food was tasty and the service was solid, just not for the $$ we were hoping for according to yelp (not taking any stars away for a mis-labeled price range). Tip:The main dining room was full but the pub side had space, and they have the exact same menu. It's actually probably a quieter and more quaint atmosphere. More...

We dropped by Circa 1875 one night in Savannah, after our Haunted Pub Crawl Tour. We were a bit inebriated (from the Pub Crawl) and quite hungry so, after consulting with one of the locals, we gave this place a try.Wow... I gave this place a 4 out of 5 rating and the food alone earned a STRONG 4-star rating.  Like most other places we visited in Savannah, this was set in the historic downtown district.  Savannah's historic district reminds me of the Garden District in New Orleans. Very beautiful.  The food here was wonderful. It's French food and they know how to cook.  We started with an appetizer of Epinards/Endive (Baby Spinach salad).  Baby spinach and belgium endive, poached pear, spiced pecans, camembert cheese with port vinaigrette.  Their french bread here is, hot, soft and melts in your mouth. For the entree', we actually shared the Jarret D'agneau Braisé (braised lamb shank).  WOW.. My grandmother used to make lamb shank and this almost as good.  Very tasty. I wasn't too fond of the spaghetti with it but the lamb was delicious...the gravy made it even better.  We washed it all down with Harp Lager on tap (one of the few places I've found that has this delicious beer on tap). The pub is quite trendy in it's decor and the wait staff was very friendly. More...

Michael our waiter was amazing. We got seated while not having a reservation at all it was great. Then the food. We had escargots to start, which was good. I ordered the scallops and my wife got a salmon cooked in a parchment bag.  The scallops were amazing! Nice large scallops seared and cooked perfectly.  My wife's salmon was under cooked, but when asked Michael quickly fixed it without hesitation, and even gave us desert on him. We picked the chocolate mousse with raspberries.  Our water cups never became empty, even with another table that seemed to have endless questions.I would highly recommend this place. More...

We had a good meal here. The upstairs felt like a garish grandmother's living room, so I was happy when we were spirited away into a cozy corner of the dark basement dining room, which has a weird chapel kind of theme going on, but it works. I had the mussels, which were some of the best I've had. Very fresh and the broth was full of fennel, which I love. Also got the brussels sprouts (full of bacon--watch out, pescatarians) and glazed carrots, which were the better choice. Had some delicious French red I can't recall. My boyfriend had the trout, which also looked like a good choice. More...

Now this is a cool bar.  We literally just stumbled upon this place while looking for a last stop before the night ended.  As soon as we entered I noticed the post prohibition feel of the place.  Just the architecture of the interior and exterior both give you a feel of a time past.  At the time of our visit the place was packed and it's a pretty small bar so if you are the least bit weary of small spots you might want to avoid on a busy night.  Amazingly, the bartenders where very attentive even with the large crowd.  I totally want to come back here on a more chill night and really absorb more of the feel, so to speak. The mushroom soup was delicious: perfect balanced of cream and scallions and wild mushrooms. My husband and I chose two dishes that were more continentally French than coastal. I had a white bean cassoulet with duck and sausage. The duck melted off the bone and the sausage was obviously homemade. The cassoulet was in a lovely brown sauce. I think it was basically a roux with smoked bacon. My husband had the lamb shank with swiss chard and mashed potatoes. It was just incredible. The lamb fell off the bone and had a lovely rich flavor. Our server was excellent. She suggested several great wine and was highly attentive. She even apologized for bringing out our bread at the same time as our appetizer. We would definitely go back to this place. More...

I loved Matt B's review concerning the attitudes of the French.  Lucky for us we didn't have a French waitress.  Ours was very accomodating and friendly.  Clearly from the South and full of southern hospitality.  Maybe they sent the other French women home!I hate to give 5 stars to all but he most exceptional restaurants.  In some respects, they do enjoy more than 4.  At least a 4.5.  Why doesn't this darned Yelp allow us to give fractional votes?.We had not come across Circa 1875 until we were walking in Savannah.  We happened across the restaurant earlier in the week and while we had plans to return to the Olde Pink House for another 5 star meal, the menu looked intriguing and the other reviews from Yelpers that I read on my phone convinced us to give it a try. When we returned to Savannah later in the week, we found the restaurant to be hopping on a Friday evening.  We managed to change our reservation from 9 to 7 earlier in the day but we did apparently get the last table as the place was bustling upstairs and there were quite a few diners downstairs as well (sit up, not down if given a choice).I started with the foie gras.  This is why the restaurant rated 4 stars, not 5.  I ordered the "Foies gras en Torchon..........Poached Foie Gras served chilled with a Blueberry demi over grilled Brioche........16."  Now part of the problem is of my own making.  Had I carefully read the description, I probably would have ordered something else.  But there are two dishes that I always order from a restaurant and how they are created defines the restaurant - foie gras and sweetbreads.  I've never had foie gras "poached" before.  What I was served was an excellent pate on brioche with blueberry glaze.  But it wasn't foie gras.  It was pate.  Call a spade a spade and a goose a goose but don't serve me cold "foie gras."  My wife and I both had the salad fresee with poached egg.  You have to get this dish with the poached egg.  It was done perfectly.  The egg wasn't actually poached but just coddled.  My God, it was heaven.  The salad alone with a nice white wine would have made my evening. For entrees, my wife had the trout with a side of mashed potatoes and truffle oil (do you really need to add $1.5 to the price of the potatoes for truffle oil - stop being so damned French)!  I had a lovely snapper in Papillote that was very rich and flavorful.  We closed with a creme brulee and crepes Suzette.  I particularly loved the crepes. This was truly excellent bistro food.  This is not high dining but very, very nice French bistro fare with a touch of class.  I'd heartily recommend Circa 1875 to anyone and would definitely stop by again the next time we are fortunate enough to visit Savannah. Went to Circa last night with two of my friends. We arrived there late (around 10:30)- and we could still order food- so we were happy. It was super hot outside and inside- but they were right on it getting the air rocking and even setting up fans around- Super acommodating. We were impressed. Our server was Ian. He was really friendly and offered one of the best dining experiences we've had in Savannah. But the food- the food was awesome. Amongst the best meals we've had in town. We had the glazed carrots, the roasted beet salad, spinach salad, asparagus and burgers and all of them were cooked to perfection. Needless to say- our new favorite in town. Can't believe we hadn't been here sooner. Thank you for the incredible service! More...
