I volunteer there almost every week as a dog walker. I love the people that work there, they are clearly passionate about the work and it shows in the way they handle their dogs. It is a small operation and they work with a lot of dogs with tough temperaments, but it is always clean, welcoming and the dogs look well taken care of. Highly recommend considering them if you are looking to adopt. More...

My husband randomly stumbled upon this place when googling dog shelters, and I am SOOO ecstatic we stepped inside! Their shelter makes it so easy to walk and spend time with the babies, unlike many other shelters I've been to. They WANT their dogs to receive the love you have to give, so you're able to go in and walk one dog, five dogs, twenty dogs.... whatever you have time for! After stopping in here four times over the course of two weekends, we were pretty set on which dog we loved, but wanted to foster first to ensure he was a good fit. The foster-to-adopt option was amazing, and helped us adjust and adapt to our pup. Gabrielle was probably the most helpful person I've ever worked with. She walked us through what to expect, was easily reachable via text/email, and quelled all of my little fears. She knows her stuff and is definitely a blessing to the shelter!Honestly (and I know everyone says this!), we have the BEST dog in the world. He is patient, calm, easily trainable, the most loving (I mean seriously, he hugs people!), and just the most wonderful dog I've ever met. I wouldn't hesitate for a single second if you're thinking about adopting your next family member. Chicago canine rescue is the place to do it! More...

I've never adopted a dog from CCR (yet!) But I've had a really good experience volunteering to walk dogs. I'd highly recommend it if you want to get a little exercise and help the pups work off some of their energy and (hopefully) stress. Bring an ID, close toed shoes. It's very quick and easy to get walking. Each dog is different, so don't be afraid to let them know how experienced you are if you want a dog who is a little easier to walk for your first time!! We had the best experience at CCR. They were always responsive, helpful, and friendly. We looked for a dog for some time, and we enjoyed that CCR allows you to walk the dog and really get to know him or her before putting in an application. Eventually we found the perfect fit for our family. During the adoption process the CCR staff gave us some very helpful tips about dog ownership. We also found their application review process reasonable and appropriate - they called our references and did their homework but we never felt like their questions were unreasonable or intrusive. Also, we should note that we found the world's best dog here - we can't imagine our family without her! More...

I adopted a senior dog from here who has quite a few issues, but not so many that I wasn't willing to adopt him. They made me quite aware of what all his health needs were & I was willing or I wouldn't have even considered a senior. That was my intention, to adopt a dog that would get looked over because he wasn't "easy" or a "cute puppy." Ironically, my old, bald, toothless  wonder boy gets lots of attention because his personality is adorably grumpy. I'm glad this place took its time to call my vet and find out what kind of care I've given my dogs. I noticed a few reviews that were negative because the reviewer didn't like that they got passed over because they weren't responsibly managing their current pet's veterinary care. Those people need to get over themselves. I'm sure they consider themselves loving pet owners, but I've found those people usually relinquish pets easily or their pet suffers due to their lack of awareness. Pets aren't accessories. A guy at work once was talking about adopting a dog from another rescue, but was bewildered why it mattered that he didn't have a vet for his cats, because "they're cats." He didn't even have them spayed or neutered and didn't think twice that he was a contributing factor to pet over population. It never ceases to amaze me how ignorant people are about pets. Those people that cite how loving they are to "Fido", but haven't a clue that how you treat a pet often reflects much of the rest on how you go out there in the world. I'd rather be around someone who doesn't have pets because they know they are a commitment...rather than someone that has a pet to complete the superficial picture they have of their life. More...

This place rocks so hard and its volunteers and staff do marvelous and important work for these animals, always providing a high quality of care. I'm reading some of these poor reviews and can't believe people are serious... please don't leave a bad review because you were looked over for an adoption; there's probably an excellent reason. CCR's staff cares ultimately about the welfare and healthy futures of the animals they take in. My boyfriend and I have done foster work for several dogs over the course of a year and we can't wait to continue. We've been onsite countless times and someone has always taken the time to walk us through the shelter, which is spic-n-span, to introduce us to new pups who have found their way there. Anna, in particular, makes it a point to get to know each dog inside and out, which perhaps is why she's able to make quick, decisive judgement on whether a pup would be well suited to the applicant.  The facility is clean of canine flu, so they're very adamant about precautions that need to be taken - very rightfully so.  My favorite part is sometimes getting a chance to chat with some of the regular walkers about their favorite animals in the shelter to work with. Just like people, animals have preferences : favorite bushes, hydrants, toys, smells - you name it. It gives you valuable intel into how to make your new friend comfortable in their new surroundings. Please please PLEASE check out CCR if you're considering adopting a new pet! HashtagAdoptDontShop More...

Recently, my partner and I adopted a dog from Chicago Canine Rescue. The staff was wonderful and our adoption specialist, Anna, was professional, kind, helpful and obviously had  the canine's best interest in mind. Chicago Canine did check out my references and my vet. Rightfully so!!!!! . The staff there was incredibly busy. I followed exactly what I was instructed to do and there was absolutely no problem. Our dog did have a runny nose but Chicago Canine Rescue provided antibiotics and a comprehensive medical summary.   The counselors were matter of fact but certainly not rude. They are there to service the animals in their care and not cater to the mood of angry and disgruntled people. Additionally, it is the responsibility of pet owners to make sure their pets are   vaccinated against rabies and other diseases. If a prospective pet owner is unwilling to follow the adoption guidelines set forth by the agency then it stands to reason the agency will  stop the adoption. Additionally, the agency has no way of predicting what type of illness a pet may acquire after an adoption. My partner and I  were treated with the utmost respect. Chicago Canine provided us with a healthy, happy puppy that is now in training to be a therapy/service dog to help with my hearing. In our opinion they are to be applauded for saving animals that probably would have been euthanized had they not been rescued by Chicago Canine Rescue. My husband and I were in the market for a pup, but all the ones we had our hearts set on kept getting snatched up. So we switched gears and headed to CCR, with no real expectations. And boy am I glad we did! When we arrived they gave us a full tour and patiently showed us all of the dogs. We were there for upwards of 2.5 hours and never once did we feel rushed. What impressed me most was how honest and upfront they were about each dog's demeanor and whether or not they would be a good fit for our family. I didn't feel like they were trying to force any dogs on us, in fact, it was kind of the opposite. After the tour we met with four dogs and it was clear when I burst into tears at the sight of doggy number three, Hank, that we had found our dog. The adoption process was very extensive. They called our landlord, a reference and waited a few days to give us time to process the decision before bringing our guy home for a house visit. I know some folks have expressed gripes about the long process, but I learned that the rate at which folks return dogs after adoption them is shockingly high. So I feel like CCR takes the extra care to prevent any additional turbulence to these poor creatures, already rough, lives. Post adoption CCR has been equally great. After the first week with Hank we reached out to them with some basic new pet-owner questions and they were super helpful and responded within a few hours. If you're open-minded about the kind of dog you want to bring into your family and are willing to put in a bit of work and patience on a pup-a-roni that has had a rough past I HIGHLY recommend CCR. Hank, has blossomed into a fantastic dog who we simply can't imagine living without. I can't speak highly enough about this business. We contacted them about a particular dog. They instructed us to bring our entire family in (my husband, myself and my 2 year old boy). We went in and were given a great tour of the facility. Then, they set aside a large room for us to meet and play with the dog. Well, that dog did not work out because he was too energetic  for our son and too big for us. We really wanted to add another dog to our family and the team there recommended a few more dogs for us based on our family dynamic. Well, each dog they recommended was great! We were told to come back another day and to bring our current, older dog to meet the prospective dog. At first we felt like the additional step was overkill, but we figured why not at this point? Well, it goes to show that they know what they are doing. My Fiancee and I rescued Boris, now named Mookie, from CCR, and the experience was fantastic! CCR was very straight forward about the process from the start, and wanted to make sure Mookie ended up in the best possible scenario. They conduct an application screening, puppy introduction(if you have other pets), and home inspection before allowing someone to adopt, which is AWESOME! These animals deserve great homes, and CCR goes above and beyond to make sure that's what these animals get! We visited Mookie a few times and submitted an application for him. There were other applications in but CCR wanted a family with a dog and the right situation to rescue Mookie. Once the initial application screening was passed and the vet records for our first dog were confirmed, CCR scheduled a puppy introduction for our dog to meet Mookie. The puppy introduction started out so/so and Hannah and Anna were so accommodating!  They allowed us to stay for a little bit after hours to see if the dogs would warm up too each other.  Finally when it was time to go, the dogs started to play and have fun!  Up next was the home inspection.
