I started with Checkmat Buena Park in late January or early February of 2018 after moving locally to the area. I visited many gyms in the area and was looking for specific criteria and schedule that fit my needs and goals with a hectic schedule like mine. Many places, the owners were never on site teaching the classes or if they were, would shrug me off. I walked in Checkmat and met owner and head coach, Robynho. He always has a big smile on his face and greeted me. I've done BJJ in the past when I was younger, but its still a little nerve racking and daunting trying to gauge personalities and the pecking order of any BJJ gym. Not so much for Checkmat. It really is like a big family. Egos are hardly existent. I was welcomed in and found my place. Checkmat Buena Park offers morning and night classes almost 7 days a week (except for Friday mornings are at Headquarters in Signal Hill) and Sunday's (although there is a nogi club that's starting to pick up and taught by an awesome coach named Ronnie Holmes.). There are amazing assistant coaches (Black Belts) that truly have a ton of experience in BJJ and are always willing to help and show techniques to better your game. Practices are regimented by a conditioning warmup, drilling, and live rolling. Checkmat is one of the top competition teams in the world. If competition is your goal, look no further. If it's not your thing, you're still receiving amazing world class training to fulfill your self-defense and fitness lifestyle. Pricing is very affordable compared to other gyms in the area and an unbeatable schedule. You're not required to buy the gym's equipment or uniform like other places. Can't give this place less than 5stars. Robynho is a first class BJJ trainer and a first class human being. My son trained here for about a year. The patience that he has with his little students is amazing. It was unfortunate that I had to pull out my son fr here due to conflict in schedule and my son's desire to focus more on taekwondo and this is where Robynho earned my respect the most. When I told him I was taking my son out for now, he said he understood, he didn't try to convince me otherwise, didn't talk I'll about my decision to let my kid pursue his Taekwondo for now, he didn't get mean or bitter about it and canceled charging me right away. Moving to the area, I had taken a break from bjj and I was looking for a closer, new place to train. After visiting several places in the area, I'm happy to call Checkmat Buena Park home for my bjj training. After getting bad vibes from other places, Professor Robynho and Professor João welcomed me with open arms and started right away. There are multiple classes a day (AM/PM) and open mats on Saturday morning to work on whatever you need. Also something for the kids in the evening. What I like about bjj is it can apply to self defense in the street as well as a sport for competition. You get from bjj what you put into it 100%. I’ve been training here for about half a year and love it! I came from another gym because I could train in the mornings here and morning rolls with the Breakfast Club are the best! We spend about a month to learn a whole system around a specific position to learn it really well. And each class ends with about 4-5 rounds of five minute rolls so you get good opportunity to practice it live. The warm ups are the probably hardest warm ups I’ve seen in any gym I’ve been to and it really gets you into good condition. Whether you’re a hobbyist or high level competitor there is something here for you! I’ve gone to a handful of competition classes at night and there is a 50 percent chance I will throw up! I love how you get pushed here to be your best! What can I say about this amazing training studio that hasn't already been stated? I have been training with Professor Robynho for about 7 months now and since day 1 I've felt like I am a part of a community and family that truly cares about my well-being and learning process. As you can see from the pictures, this is a warm family-friendly environment that treats everyone with respect and dignity, all the while pushing you to your limits because everyone who trains here wants to bring out the best out in you. Great gym with a world class black belt professor in Robynho, not only is he an experienced black belt and member of one of the best jiu jitsu teams in the world he’s an accomplished competitor. This gym is unique as it is well suited for the new jiu jitsu student trying to learn the art, kids who are learning a martial art for the first time and world class jiu jistu competitors. Not many gyms can accommodate this broad scope of student needs but I’ve known Robynho for years he has even cornered me in tournaments and I can tell you his love and passion for jiu jitsu is seen in his concern and dedication to his students.
