Charteris has been providing a differentiated and tailor-made range of investment services to private and institutional investors for 35 years. Charteris is also an HMRC approved ISA manager.
Assets are managed on a bespoke discretionary basis, not constrained by one-size-fitsall investment process, to attempt to deliver long term returns for clients. Our portfolio managers have many years of senior-level, client-facing and financial market experience. This means clients benefit from a highly personalised service that reflects their individual mandates, including ethical and environmental criteria.
Charteris also manages a distinctive range of collective funds available to private and institutional clients. In line with our client-first philosophy, our fees & charges are both competitive and transparent.
Background of the Business
The Company was established in 1984, to provide financial services to private clients in the West Country.
It remained a purely local business until the current management team took over Charteris in September 2002, with the intention of using it as a platform to build a traditional fixed interest and equity fund management business from the head office in London.
The Company maintains an administration presence in Exeter but most of the investment management is now based in London. Some of our specialist
Investment managers are located in Scotland as well as the South East of England.
Mutual Fund Business
In October 2003 Charteris was appointed to run the Close Finsbury Gilt Fund on a concept developed by Charteris. This Fund grew from £1m to a peak of £130m in 1.5 years but after 3 years Close took the management in-house. Charteris was then appointed to run the City Financial Strategic Gilt Fund on an identical basis. This Fund (CF) was top of the IMA Gilt sector in 2007, 2009 & 2013 before this Fund was merged with another CF corporate bond
fund. Charteris has since started its own Bond Fund – The HC Charteris Strategic Bond Fund which was launched in Q4 of 2017.
Charteris also took over the James Brearley Equity fund in October 2008 which was renamed the Elite Charteris Premium Income Fund. This fund
(which aims to pay a yield of 4-6% per annum) was top quartile of the IA UK Equity Income sector in 2008, 2010 & 2016. It has since been renamed the HC
Charteris Premium Income and is located in the IA UK All companies sector.
In March 2010 Charteris launched the WAY Charteris Gold Fund. This Fund showed high promise straight away as it was the top UK mutual Fund in its
maiden 3 months. It went on to become the HC Charteris Gold & Precious Metals Fund as the fund sought exposure to other precious metal exposure
(such as silver) not just gold. This change in structure helped the fund achieve the rank of the best performing fund in the UK across all sectors in calendar
year 2016 when it went up 133.95%.
Charteris acquired a Property Fund in Q2 of 2014. It was renamed the HC Charteris Property Fund which has been top quartile in the IA Property sector in both 2015 & 2017 under its new management team. It was also one of few property funds that did not soft-close after the Brexit referendum result and also outperformed the EPRA NAREIT Index for calendar year 2016. The size of the fund is circa £1M and in all liquid assets. The firm also managed the liquid portfolio of the Host Capital Student Accommodation fund before this was merged with another fund.
Charteris successfully launched the HC Charteris Global Macro Fund in Q1 of 2015. The fund is approaching its three year anniversary and celebrated
calendar year 2016 by being top of the Citywire Absolute Return sector as well as being top quartile in the IA Global sector.
Private Client Wealth Management

The UK Client assets are held on the JHC Figaro system in conjunction with James Brearley which is a state of the art fully automated Dealing, Admin, & Custody service. Clients can (upon request) have online access to view their portfolio(s). Overseas client assets are held with Julius Baer bank. Clients are able to hold their assets in a number of foreign currencies.
Charteris has a differentiated investment philosophy that combines value-based fundamental and macro research with long-term cycle analysis of all major asset classes. This process is partly aimed at identifying new investment trends and offers the potential for excess returns over the long term. Our investment strategy is also framed according to each client’s specific requirements and circumstances through
detailed risk grading and a preference for building long term returns. We strive to keep dealing, transaction and investment management costs as low as possible with no auto-rebalancing or over-active trading. Direct holdings, as opposed to “fund-offund” investments are strongly preferred to lower costs for clients. Charteris and its leadership team have received numerous industry awards throughout their careers.
