Dope music venue, all music genres. It reminds me of a New Orleans music space with the same energy. There was a small dance floor and not overrun with vacationers. I took a star away, because the bathroom is hideous. More...

This small venue is just such a cool atmosphere.  ALL ages and walks of life. The performer was Laydee Jai, she was awesome, it was a good mix of old school r&b, soul, some classic rock, the musical selection was superb. The crowd was 30+ and the place just had a really good vibe to it. The drinks were priced very well. I loved this place because it also had a small dance floor. If you like jazz and soul music this is a quaint little spot that is a bit hidden. There is nothing fancy about it but I think that's what makes it all the more intimate whether you're alone or hanging out with friends or a significant other. There is a very welcoming vibe about the place no matter your age, race , etc... there usually seems to be a blended crowd and while the place isn't huge the dance floor is welcoming to without judgement. On certain nights there is a cover charge to get in. I've been there on a Wednesday and there was no cover just a suggested drink minimum of 2 drinks. Char's is one of my absolute fave little dive bars in metro Phoenix...the cover charge is only like $6, you can toss back cheap libations, people-watch a diverse, eclectic crowd aaaand get your groove on to some bomb jams by a live band! * *SoulPower & Lady J being the best ones IMO*Never have I come here and not had an absolute blast. The crowd is very mixed- people of literally all ages and ethnicities come here and that's part of its charm. Yes, it's in a sketchy part of town and the parking situation is terrible, BUT it's still a great time. The vibe is so fun here! There are a few different bands that play here but the theme is generally R&B/funk/soul music- the vast majority of it old school. If you are looking to jam to current music, Char's won't be your spot. BUT if you happen to be in the mood for some throwback hits, this is the best ticket in town. The biggest negative for me though are the restrooms. Yikes! I'm not gonna sugar coat this- the ladies room is positively atrocious. Cramped, not very private, and definitely no gold stars for cleanliness. Basically it's a horror show. Moral of the story- come here to get your drink on and shake a tailfeather... but once you have to take a whiz, hightail it outta here as fast as you can. More...

I love good, live music. I find that it's not easy to find here in the Valley. Enter: Chars Has the Blues! The first time I was here was after a fancy date night out I wasn't quite ready to call it a night yet and we ended up here. At first site I was taken a little aback : it's small; it's a little divey  and it's super crowded. Well. Not much throws me off. Enter Kimberly. Pushing ones way thru the crowd to make way to the bar isn't easy as everyone sort of looks at you to see if your a regular , as I said ... this place is crowded! I love the diversity of the crowd here , there are even a few emotionless millennials, ( I can say that, I'm raising one!).   The music is constantly bumping thru your body and everyone is on their feet! Soul Power tends to be the cover band here each time I've been and they are very good... (scratch the record , drop the mic) ... they are actually AMAZING! There is a complete mix to their sets and they engage the crowd. They also dress sharp and you can tell they love playing here. The last time I was here Prince was the theme in tribute. No one stayed seated! The dance floor is pretty small, but it's all good ... dance at your seat. Let the music move you where you are, right?! You will find basic drinks here.. don't be me and think that MOET splits exist here, you will end up with a old Moscato.. ( hack!!!) Stick with beer , they have a few crafts.. or well drinks with pretty basic liquors ... ( again, think Svedka and not Chopin!). The 'food' options .. or option, I should say.. is a small BBQ shack with take out in the lot.. sometimes. Get your grub in before you come to Chars! This is a music place not an eating place! Great people watching and a great place for Blues, Funk, some 70's-90's Rock.. a little old school jams to remind you of those make out sessions in college ! This is your place for that! Tips: Cash for the cover and Uber it! The parking is awful .. but since I usually come here after dinner, and have had a libation and maybe two... it's just easier and safer! Prepare to stand , as it's crowded! Mainly, come with the attitude of having fun! More...

I'm originally from Boston and I spend a lot of time in Manhattan (NYC), where the nightlife in both places is some of the best in the country. I went to Char's for the first time this past Saturday night with my best friend, who had been before and told me how great it was. I read the reviews on Yelp and was intrigued. I thought to myself, "there's no way that this little, converted old house is going to be that much fun", but I agreed to go anyway and I'm glad that I did.   We got to Char's at around 10pm and there was no where to park in the lot, so we parked down a side street not too far away. There was no line at the door, so we paid the $6 cover and went in. It's hard to describe the atmosphere because there's such a variety of people, which in my opinion is great! There were college students wearing jeans and polo shirts, to middle aged men and women dressed for a night on the town, to even older gentlemen wearing suits and ties. Every age, every ethnicity, etc just made it easy for anyone to feel comfortable.   The whole building was rocking to the live band, with Lady J doing the vocals. The place was packed and there were only 2 bartenders that I saw but they really kept up with the customers. I didn't wait more than a few minutes for a drink the whole night...really impressive because I've been in bars with half as many patrons and have had to wait 10+ minutes for a drink that ended up not tasting right. Whether you want to dance or just people watch, you're sure to have a good time. I'll definitely be going back! More...
