At Chestnut Lodge you and your pet will be cared for by one of the most respected pet bereavement facilities in the UK, established in 1969. Procedures are set to ensure you receive the highest possible standards for your choice of service.

We are one of the few Pet Bereavement Facilities in the UK to carry out individual cremations, communal cremations and burials all with the same high level of care and respect, ensuring your pets are always transported and handled carefully, whether collected from your vet or your home. We never forget that our service is for you, the owner of the pet, and guarantee our procedures at all times.

We may not ease the sadness of your loss but we hope our services will bring you comfort and enable you to look back on fond memories with joy and peace of mind.

Chestnut Lodge is one of the few establishments in the UK to be independently checked and approved under the strict Consumer Code of the Association of Private Pet Cemeteries and Crematoria

This is the only meaningful approval available for pet bereavement services. An independent specialist firm checks everything to ensure respectful handling at all times, technical procedures, customer care, and that the services are accurately described in all published material. You may have confidence in these services.

Cremation Services Offered by Chestnut Lodge

All services are clearly defined and carried out according to our strict working procedures.

Individual Cremations

Every cremation carried out here is performed with care and respect. We appreciate the trust that pet owners place in us and guarantee that trust will never be abused. Pets are handled in a dignified manner from collection and throughout the whole cremation process. Your pet is clearly identified at all stages. Each pet is placed alone into a clean chamber, unless you have made a special arrangement to have more than one of your pets cremated together. Once the cremation has finished all the remains are meticulously collected. The ashes are then carefully handled according to your wishes.

Scheduled & Attended Individual Cremations

The cremation is carried out at a specific time during the morning, if you wish to see any part of the cremation or if you’d like to take the ashes home the same day then please contact us to make arrangements. We must ensure the crematorium is ready when you arrive and leave some leeway after the previous cremation, to cover this there is an extra charge scheduled & attended cremations. Due to the length of time involved in the cremation process these appointments need to be before noon. Cremation times vary with the size of your pet. For example a cremation of a cat may take up to 3 hours to complete everything while a very large dog can take up to 6 hours. We will be able to discuss this with you when you call.

You may see any part of the process – we work the same way whether you are with us or not.

There is nothing that you can’t see but please be aware that pets have to be placed into a very hot chamber and you may wish to consider if this is really the last memory you want. However, we know this is important to many of you and we are happy to accommodate your wishes.  If you have any concerns about your pet being cremated alone in the chamber but do not want to witness it we will happily open up everything for inspection before the start of the cremation. You will see that the chamber is clean. Our detailed procedures ensure all visible remains are collected and preserved after each cremation.

Communal Cremations

Where pets are placed in the cremation chamber in the company of other pets. Further cremations are normally added to the chamber during the day. After the final cooling period (usually the next morning) the ashes are swept from the hearth and transferred to the Cemetery where they are placed into a grave.

There is a memorial bed alongside where plaques may be placed. You are welcome to visit.

No ashes from communal cremations may be returned to you, however you may request a cutting of fur or a paw print before the cremation takes place. The fur sample may also be placed into jewellery or a keepsake as a lasting memento.

Green Burial

All burials are carried out in marked plots and you may attend the burial. A green burial is marked by a shrub you may place a small plaque should you wish.

Formal Burial

All burials are carried out in marked plots and you may attend the burial. Pets are normally placed into coffins and you may add any personal items that you wish.

Formal plots must be marked with an approved memorial..

Family plots & ashes burial plots are also available.

I have nothing but great appreciation for the highest level of service I received from this company, my beloved cat's body was collected with such care and cremated on the same day of her death AND I received her ashes back the very next day, I was in so much pain when my cat's body was collected and became overly emotional, but Kim (who came to collect/deliver) was there to comfort me all the way through and I was able to spend enough time to say goodbye to my cat for the very last time without being rushed or else, she offered me kind words and gave me hugs when I was crying so hard and even told me about her own experience with her cats who passed away and that really stays with me until now I really wish my cat would do the same for me - it's become my little wish now and something to look forward to, once my cat was collected, not long after in the evening, they called me and let me know that my cat is about to be cremated and that really meant a lot to me, next day delivery was arranged without any problem and it was delivered so promptly and presented in such a lovely way I felt extremely lucky for having my cat being looked after from them, from start to finish, I simply can not praise enough of the service I received, they took care of things in the most efficient way possible with genuine care and understanding, thank you greatly for everything.

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. I cannot praise Chestnut Lodge enough. They provide a service which no pet owner wants to use, but at some point we all have to. When that time comes I would only use Chestnut Lodge. The care and respect is wonderful, and the cost is, in my opinion, a lot less than it probably should be. For anyone who loses a much-loved pet, please don't leave them with your vet - as time passes you will be glad that you did this last thing for them.

It has been several weeks since my awful experience at this business. I have been too consumed with grief at the loss of my beloved dog and how I was treated to leave a comment before now. To be fair, It is a lovely location and I was comforted greatly at the services that they offered to provide over the telephone. I was reassured very much. At the appointment however I was met by a woman I can only describe as rude, agitated and with no interest in my story and wishes. She was covered from head to foot in tattoos that were macabre and the last thing I needed to see carrying my dead boy in my arms. As an aside she stank of tobacco smoke and alcohol. I was in too much of a trauma to go elsewhere but I regret every day I wasn't stronger. Please do not allow this woman anywhere near your animals it will be the last memory and destroy your last moments with them. I have nightmares of the tattooo images I beseech any sensitive owners to take heed.

I would strongly recommend the Chestnut Lodge Crematorium. I have had two cats cremated there and the sympathy, great service and professionalism I have received have been beyond my expectations. They have even cremated an exhumed cat for me so don’t be afraid to cremate your pet even if you think it’s too late. I think handling an exhumed pet must be awful so I give them credit for this.
I will definitely use their service again should the need arise. Thank you all at Chestnut Lodge Crematorium for everything you have done for me.

My mastiff died suddenly, early in the morning on Sunday 9th October and I found myself in the surreal and very distressing situation of looking for a crematorium for my companion of 11 years. I found Chestnut Lodge through a Google search. They were the only crematorium I could find that was open on a Sunday and I'm glad they were. They were empathetic, sincere and professional. They answered all my questions. I did not feel rushed in any way. They talked me through the process and even allowed me to inspect their facilities and then to accompany my dog right to his very last moment. I meant a lot to me that I was able to do this and was a big help. Sadly, just seven months later my other mastiff had to be put down. I didn't hesitate in contacting Chestnut Lodge again. There service has been as exemplary as it was the first time. Owing to the size of my mastiff I've had some difficulty getting a suitable sized urn for his ashes due to a lack of supply (in the end I paid for a one-off size through Urns UK) but Chestnut Lodge have been very helpful and supportive throughout. I cannot speak for the very limited number of negative reviews but from my own experience I would have no hesitation in recommending or using Chestnut Lodge again myself - they were the only positive aspect of two very distressing experiences.

Thank you for the care and respect you gave our beloved Beth our 16 year old German Shepherd cross. She was a wonderful, loving and caring companion who gave us much happiness and joy over the years and the very best we could do was to place her into the safe hands of Chestnut Lodge. Thank you once again for keeping her safe until she could be returned to us.

Thankyou Chestnut Lodge. After having to have our beloved dog Leo put to rest yesterday, we needed to be sure that our lovely lad would be cremated individually, with care and on the same day; and chestnut lodge delivered. 24hrs later and we have Leo home in a lovely oak casket. Thanks to you all, best wishes, Craig and Jem

I have used Chestnut Lodge services on several occasions now after recommendation from a small local rescue centre. I work with animals and always have several pets, therefore leading to dealings with many crematoriums over the years. In doing so have had some horrific experiences. I can honestly say that with regard to their care and handling of deceased animals, the morals and ethics of Chestnut Lodge far outweigh that of any other place I've experienced both professionally and personally. They have always been respectful and caring and on more than one occasion have gone out of their way to accommodate my requirements, even out of hours. From a purely practical point of view- they are very reasonably priced, and in response to a previous review - yes you can probably get slightly cheaper elsewhere but quite simply you get what you pay for..... I personally think that you can't place a price on professionalism, care and most importantly, a dignified end.

Our family changed forever on 4th December 2016 when we had to say a heartbreaking goodbye to our very dearly loved and cherished Bernese Mountain Dog, Kurtis. From the moment I called Chestnut Lodge to arrange for our beautiful boy's collection and cremation, we were treated kindly and sincerely by the staff who clearly care so much about the service they provide which is so very important when you are entrusting your beloved pet's remains to people you have never met. We brought our boy home today and once again, the attention to detail in how carefully packaged the casket was, the tearjerking cremation certificate and the beautiful necklace keepsake leave no doubt we made the right and only choice in choosing Chestnut Lodge. Our grateful thanks, The Appleby family xx

Max was in the care of Springfield Vets in Midhurst who use Chestnut Lodge, we of course asked them to assure us that Max would be cremated as promised, individually and treated with respect. We are so impressed by the service we have received, unobtrusive, quick and even though we had no direct contact with CL we knew they could be trusted to respect and care for out beloved Spaniel - and they did. I cannot fault them. Thank you

After losing our beloved Mini Schnauzer on the 30th November at home, we contacted Chestnut Lodge, we made an appointment for 11 am the following morning, and decided to keep him at home for the night rather than the vet take him as he had 'fallen' asleep in his bed. We took him the next morning, and from pulling into the gates the calmness of the place was evident, we placed him in a room rather like you would expect with a human, and were given all the time that we needed to say goodbye, we felt as comfortable as you can be leaving a baby somewhere strange, and were told when he would be ready to come home. We collected him 2 days later and his remains are in a neatly presented little dvd case size envelope with his name and a poem which at the moment isn't out of place of the sideboard.I cannot recommend Chestnut Lodge enough, the peace they put in our hearts with their care and attention to detail is second to none. Thank You xx

I cannot recommend these people enough. My world changed forever when my baby girl was taken from me on 18th November. Not only had my heart been smashed to pieces, I then discovered it was because the vets overdosed her and killed her. When I took her to the vets dead, they said they'd give me options but instead shoved a leaflet in my hand to have her cremated and gave me a hefty bill. Honey was my baby. She wasn't just a dog! So I wanted what was best for her. After some research, I found out the company the vets offered me dispose of their waste and God only knows what remains you get back! In my mind this is disgusting and vets should be ashamed for offering this as ANY option, let alone the only option! Heartbroken, I looked to see if there were any other options. After all I'd been through and after having lost all my trust in everyone, I skeptically came across Chestnut Lodge. I honestly cannot gush about them more if I tried. They collected Honey from the vets (which was nowhere near them). They gave me the option if I wanted to see her or not. I was quite worried about this, as I didn't want my last memory to be of her not looking like her. They had laid her out in her bed and she looked so beautiful. She looked that peaceful, I just wanted to shake her to wake her up. They'd put her in her bed which they knew was super important to me. They let me spend as much time as I wanted with her. I had a big obsession that I wanted a mould of her nose and they bent over backwards to do it even though it wasn't something they normally offered. They gave me prints of her nose and paw to cherish. I couldn't do it but they allowed my partner to watch her be cremated to ease my mind, so we knew it was definitely her I was getting back. I honestly cannot tell you how much kindness and thought they put into their service. Putting her prints in personalised presentation cards, putting her moulds in beautiful boxes. I haven't even said everything wrong the vets did but I could go on and on about the incredible effort Chestnut Lodge made to counteract the vets disgusting actions. I can honestly not thank you enough. You let me say goodbye to my baby one last time and I have beautiful prints to remember her by. My last memory of her now is her sleeping. You eased what was the worst pain in my life. You could take advantage of grieving people if you really wanted but in my eyes, you don't charge enough for what you do. They don't do their job to make money off people, they do it for the love of animals. You're incredibly kind. I'm eternally grateful to you and I'm sorry this review doesn't do even half the justice you deserve. Thank you so much xxx

For anyone grieving right now reading this, I'm so sorry for the unbearable pain you're going through right now but honestly don't think twice about going to Chestnut Lodge.

I chose Chestnut lodge over other more local pet crematoriums as I felt that the transparency on pricing on their website and information supplied was the best on offer. I simply wished to know the cost rather then seeking a cheaper service, another site I visited I could not find any prices and another It was hard to find them, I wanted to feel confident that my companion of 18 years would be cremated separately and would be safe to get back to me.
I initially planned to bring Chiro to the Crematorium and have a same day cremation however I could not face this in the end and chose to have him collected from the Vet and then collected by a friend.
Chiro's cremains have been packed as requested in two separate tins, one with half and one with two quarters for different memorial options.
The lady on the phone was always calm and polite and took down my request carefully and with respect, very professional.
Thank you

I am absolutely astounded by the care and respect giving to me and my Dale at this time. He was well taken care of from day one with the same respect that one would give a human in the same situation. I truly recommend Chestnut Lodge above all others and I will most definitely be coming back when the need arises in the future.

Loosing a fur baby is always so so difficult and you’re always so worried about who to take care of your little one. You put all your trust into them looking after them. Chestnut tree lodge makes losing a fur baby that little less heartbreaking because you know they will look after them and treat them with respect. Thank you for making the loss a little bit bearable. When we recently lost our dear Springer Spaniel, Charlie, and were overcome with grief. During such a difficult time we didn’t think about making independent arrangements and left it with the vet to organise his cremation. We didn’t feel happy about the situation as felt we were left with little information regarding the arrangements. We realised that we wanted to have more choice and information regarding the details of Charlie’s cremation.

It was then I found out about Chestnut Lodge Pet Crematorium. While reading their website we found so much more information about the cremation process and how much care and support would be given throughout the whole process. I contacted Stephen at Chestnut Lodge who immediately put our minds at rest. He listened to our wishes and carried out everything in a caring and professional way. We made all the arrangements with Stephen, but later wished to change some of the arrangements so we could have Charlie laid out before his cremation, to say our last goodbyes. Stephen was very professional and arranged these changes without any problems. The service that was given by Chestnut Lodge was everything anyone could expect down to the finest details. Charlie’s ashes were respectfully delivered the nest day to our home. We could not have wanted anything more for our boy Charlie and fully recommend Chestnut Lodge to anyone requiring a professional, caring service.
