At Chestnut Lodge you and your pet will be cared for by one of the most respected pet bereavement facilities in the UK, established in 1969. Procedures are set to ensure you receive the highest possible standards for your choice of service.

We are one of the few Pet Bereavement Facilities in the UK to carry out individual cremations, communal cremations and burials all with the same high level of care and respect, ensuring your pets are always transported and handled carefully, whether collected from your vet or your home. We never forget that our service is for you, the owner of the pet, and guarantee our procedures at all times.

We may not ease the sadness of your loss but we hope our services will bring you comfort and enable you to look back on fond memories with joy and peace of mind.

Chestnut Lodge is one of the few establishments in the UK to be independently checked and approved under the strict Consumer Code of the Association of Private Pet Cemeteries and Crematoria

This is the only meaningful approval available for pet bereavement services. An independent specialist firm checks everything to ensure respectful handling at all times, technical procedures, customer care, and that the services are accurately described in all published material. You may have confidence in these services.

Cremation Services Offered by Chestnut Lodge

All services are clearly defined and carried out according to our strict working procedures.

Individual Cremations

Every cremation carried out here is performed with care and respect. We appreciate the trust that pet owners place in us and guarantee that trust will never be abused. Pets are handled in a dignified manner from collection and throughout the whole cremation process. Your pet is clearly identified at all stages. Each pet is placed alone into a clean chamber, unless you have made a special arrangement to have more than one of your pets cremated together. Once the cremation has finished all the remains are meticulously collected. The ashes are then carefully handled according to your wishes.

Scheduled & Attended Individual Cremations

The cremation is carried out at a specific time during the morning, if you wish to see any part of the cremation or if you’d like to take the ashes home the same day then please contact us to make arrangements. We must ensure the crematorium is ready when you arrive and leave some leeway after the previous cremation, to cover this there is an extra charge scheduled & attended cremations. Due to the length of time involved in the cremation process these appointments need to be before noon. Cremation times vary with the size of your pet. For example a cremation of a cat may take up to 3 hours to complete everything while a very large dog can take up to 6 hours. We will be able to discuss this with you when you call.

You may see any part of the process – we work the same way whether you are with us or not.

There is nothing that you can’t see but please be aware that pets have to be placed into a very hot chamber and you may wish to consider if this is really the last memory you want. However, we know this is important to many of you and we are happy to accommodate your wishes.  If you have any concerns about your pet being cremated alone in the chamber but do not want to witness it we will happily open up everything for inspection before the start of the cremation. You will see that the chamber is clean. Our detailed procedures ensure all visible remains are collected and preserved after each cremation.

Communal Cremations

Where pets are placed in the cremation chamber in the company of other pets. Further cremations are normally added to the chamber during the day. After the final cooling period (usually the next morning) the ashes are swept from the hearth and transferred to the Cemetery where they are placed into a grave.

There is a memorial bed alongside where plaques may be placed. You are welcome to visit.

No ashes from communal cremations may be returned to you, however you may request a cutting of fur or a paw print before the cremation takes place. The fur sample may also be placed into jewellery or a keepsake as a lasting memento.

Green Burial

All burials are carried out in marked plots and you may attend the burial. A green burial is marked by a shrub you may place a small plaque should you wish.

Formal Burial

All burials are carried out in marked plots and you may attend the burial. Pets are normally placed into coffins and you may add any personal items that you wish.

Formal plots must be marked with an approved memorial..

Family plots & ashes burial plots are also available.

It has been several weeks since my awful experience at this business. I have been too consumed with grief at the loss of my beloved dog and how I was treated to leave a comment before now. To be fair, It is a lovely location and I was comforted greatly at the services that they offered to provide over the telephone. I was reassured very much. At the appointment however I was met by a woman I can only describe as rude, agitated and with no interest in my story and wishes. She was covered from head to foot in tattoos that were macabre and the last thing I needed to see carrying my dead boy in my arms. As an aside she stank of tobacco smoke and alcohol. I was in too much of a trauma to go elsewhere but I regret every day I wasn't stronger. Please do not allow this woman anywhere near your animals it will be the last memory and destroy your last moments with them. I have nightmares of the tattooo images I beseech any sensitive owners to take heed.

I would strongly recommend the Chestnut Lodge Crematorium. I have had two cats cremated there and the sympathy, great service and professionalism I have received have been beyond my expectations. They have even cremated an exhumed cat for me so don’t be afraid to cremate your pet even if you think it’s too late. I think handling an exhumed pet must be awful so I give them credit for this.
I will definitely use their service again should the need arise. Thank you all at Chestnut Lodge Crematorium for everything you have done for me.

My mastiff died suddenly, early in the morning on Sunday 9th October and I found myself in the surreal and very distressing situation of looking for a crematorium for my companion of 11 years. I found Chestnut Lodge through a Google search. They were the only crematorium I could find that was open on a Sunday and I'm glad they were. They were empathetic, sincere and professional. They answered all my questions. I did not feel rushed in any way. They talked me through the process and even allowed me to inspect their facilities and then to accompany my dog right to his very last moment. I meant a lot to me that I was able to do this and was a big help. Sadly, just seven months later my other mastiff had to be put down. I didn't hesitate in contacting Chestnut Lodge again. There service has been as exemplary as it was the first time. Owing to the size of my mastiff I've had some difficulty getting a suitable sized urn for his ashes due to a lack of supply (in the end I paid for a one-off size through Urns UK) but Chestnut Lodge have been very helpful and supportive throughout. I cannot speak for the very limited number of negative reviews but from my own experience I would have no hesitation in recommending or using Chestnut Lodge again myself - they were the only positive aspect of two very distressing experiences.

Thank you for the care and respect you gave our beloved Beth our 16 year old German Shepherd cross. She was a wonderful, loving and caring companion who gave us much happiness and joy over the years and the very best we could do was to place her into the safe hands of Chestnut Lodge. Thank you once again for keeping her safe until she could be returned to us.

I have used Chestnut Lodge services on several occasions now after recommendation from a small local rescue centre. I work with animals and always have several pets, therefore leading to dealings with many crematoriums over the years. In doing so have had some horrific experiences. I can honestly say that with regard to their care and handling of deceased animals, the morals and ethics of Chestnut Lodge far outweigh that of any other place I've experienced both professionally and personally. They have always been respectful and caring and on more than one occasion have gone out of their way to accommodate my requirements, even out of hours. From a purely practical point of view- they are very reasonably priced, and in response to a previous review - yes you can probably get slightly cheaper elsewhere but quite simply you get what you pay for..... I personally think that you can't place a price on professionalism, care and most importantly, a dignified end.

Thankyou Chestnut Lodge. After having to have our beloved dog Leo put to rest yesterday, we needed to be sure that our lovely lad would be cremated individually, with care and on the same day; and chestnut lodge delivered. 24hrs later and we have Leo home in a lovely oak casket. Thanks to you all, best wishes, Craig and Jem
