We bought a house with the most appalling layout imaginable: the bathroom and toilet were centrally located, the only ventilation into the living room and conservatory. We had no idea how to make this into a family living area. We got in touch with James Carvell. He saw it on his first visit, then on his second came up with a solution, both practical and stunning. By knocking through a couple of walls and placing some skylights, we now have a home that is spacious, full of light, and perfect for family life. It is important to stress how well James integrated both the practical and aesthetic aspects of the house. They were able to listen to what I wanted and make suggestions.I also commissioned a Sun Path Analysis to demonstrate any shadowing on neighbours properties as they had objected to my proposal. We employed Mr Carvell to develop our ideas to extend the kitchen of our Grade2 listed house. He was very pleasant and enthusiastic. He listened carefully and came up with a design that was very much his ideas but taking full account of our requirements. He produced clear drawings and plans, readily adapting them to our suggestions. How can someone tell if their Garage is suitable for conversion?
As a general rule garage conversions are straightforward. Be aware the additional costs of insulation and in some cases new foundations across the garage door (to reduce construction costs a foundation is not always provided across the threshold of an existing garage).
Not all garages have a damp course which makes detailing less straightforward.
Run us through the different stages of the Garage conversion process - what's involved?
Insulating walls can require a stud work lining, although insulated plasterboard can be fixed straight onto the masonry.
Likewise with the floor.

What inspired you to start your own business?
One-off housing design and remodeling existing houses has always interested me as it required a degree of design flair and construction knowlege. I find working with clients to provide a solution very satisfying and enjoy re-visiting the projects when they have been completed.
