Q&As

Knowing when to press the shutter. Ooh and the light, which you may or may not be able to control, light is everything. That said, you can still get a great photograph when, for that nano second that you saw perfect, you hit the shutter.

What, when, who and why. Firstly find out what or who the subject is, is it a person or people or a product or products or an animal or even all three. Then establishing what the photographs are going to be used for, tells us an enormous amount and gives us enough information to gauge how long it will take and what equipment will be needed. With that information we can quote accurately. Equally important is the more a client talks the better we get to understand what it is they want us to achieve. I think a goal of any service provider is to exceed a customers expectations but in order to do that you have to first understand what those expectations are. The initial 'W" questions are fairly standard and their responses are what generate tailored questions that are as unique as the customer.

The thing I love the most is that it has meaning. The very first customer was a baby and toddler shoot and their Mum ordered three framed prints. When they were delivered, she opened the package and didn't say a word, just looked at the photos. I was dying inside thinking that she didn't like them. Then she cried, she did like them, she loved them. I have never done a job before where if the customer cries it is a good thing. It was wonderful. Fortunately not every customer cries or I would be an emotional wreck but what has stayed with me is the desire for my work to have an impact on the person that it paying for it. It never stopped being important and that is what I love the most.

For most of my working life I have worked on the corporate ladder, twice growing an idea into a fully functioning and profitable business for other people. I began to yearn to do it for myself. The photography part was an accident and one that I am very grateful for.

I guarantee that I will do my very best regardless of the size of the job or the budget.
