|To get to the island, a chauffeur driven car was waiting at the shop to take us to the shore where the sea tractor greeted us to take us across the sea to Burgh. ||The weather was sunny, the view was breathtaking and the walk around the island was beautiful and refreshing the mermaid pool was gorgeous and the art deco was special. The hotel had been revamped and it worked. I loved the art deco bar and the pelican wallpaper in the bathroom. ||My room was cosy, which was good as it was stormy night with strong winds, which should have ruined the trip. It didn't because the sound of the wind and rain made for a calming, peaceful sleep. ||There was a live jazz band, no one danced but did dress up. The food was fresh, it was not fine dining standard, more of a hearty standard and canapes consisted of popcorn and not memorable, they need to work on that. |Breakfast was hearty. We booked 2 nights in a Double Room, each room has it's own character, ours was the Christie room, rooms do not have numbers, simply names. The bedroom itself is small, however the en-suite bathroom more than made up for the lack of space, it is best described as a bathroom / dressing room. Strongly recommend the experience of the Grand Ballroom restaurant, black-tie compulsory. Ideally, take in a Wednesday or Saturday night to enjoy the dinner dance with live 20's / 30's music. I would not recommend this hotel for children under 12, they do take children 5 and over, however younger children can only dine in the Pilchard Inn, suggest maximum stay 3 nights, unless on honeymoon of course. Take time to enjoy a cocktail in the Palm Court, and fro the brave a swim in the Mermaid pool, if swimming as we did in the winter months (November) ask Reception to turn the sauna on for you. Recently re-opened after a change in ownership, there are a few areas for improvement, a qualified Sommelier to assist with the extensive wine list, and communication with waiting staff when a dish advertised is not available, minor details. Finally, pay close attention to messages the hotel may send regarding arrival times, weather and tide are key. More...

Very much enjoyed the experience and it is a bucket list destination for those who want to experience something of the decadence that was the 1930s and/or for fans of Agatha Christie. ||The bedrooms and main areas are beautifully decorated but there is still some work to be done with respect to the hallways, billiards room and ‘library’. I completely appreciate that a building of this size and cultural significance will take time and huge investment to bring up to scratch.||I stayed in a suite and it is a luxury to have additional space to relax in but I did miss not having the means to make a brew as this would have made the stay more comfortable. Having tea brought up in the morning is lovely and is probably a true reflection of the practices in 1930s but I am not sure what reason is for not having tea tray in the room? ||The staff were pleasant and welcoming, especially those who take you take you back and forth from the island. ||The food was good.||The cocktails were fabulous.||Would love to return in the summer. We had a fabulous time the night we stayed on Burgh Island.||||To start at the beginning, you have to phone just before you arrive at Bigbury-on-sea to let them know you are arriving and you are given the code for the private secure parking for your car. Funnily we could just about see our car from our room on the island, so managed to get a photo of the parking from there. Anyway, you park up and are then driven over to the island. We had a good chat to the driver and he was saying that logistically it can be difficult getting things to the island. They can't drive anything heavier than the Land Rover they ferry you over in, so I have no idea how they go about building works, delivering supplies etc,. The driver also said that we would have a wonderful time and he wasn't wrong there, he also said we would feel like we had stepped back into 1930 and he wasn't wrong there either.||||Our luggage was taken in for us and was taken away to be put in our room when it was ready. We had to go over during the morning because of the tide, but couldn't check in till later, so off we went to discover the island and the Pilchard Inn for a few hours. We sat outside for quite a while just watching the tide going in and out and the sea tractor going back anf forth, very therapeutic.||||When you check in you usually get a glass of fizz in the lounge before they show you up to your room, although as it was my birthday I later found out there was a lovely bottle of bollinger champagne in the room, so we sat and had a lovely pot of tea looking out across the island.||||We were shown to our room (Fruity Metcalf) where our luggage was waiting as too was the bollinger. Our room took up a corner of the floor, which meant our bathroom was actually bigger than the room. The bathroom was dual aspect with a balcony that stretchs along the entire building. The bathroom suite is a 1930's original and just perfect. The room was more than big enough and having the radio made a welcome change from a TV. I just can't fault the place, although I am sure there is much to fault, this is all about the experience, I did read a couple of comments about our room and there being odd noises etc, but we had nothing, it was quiet and we had a great nights sleep.||||We dressed for dinner in The Grand Ballroom, but beforehand had cocktails in The Palm Court. You really do feel like you have stepped back in time and it's great to see everyone dressed up. We had a really lovely meal in The Grand Ballroom and I myself am veggie and had no issues with the menu or the food. We had music and singing whilst we ate and although it was not very busy there was a great atmosphere. I believe that the meal costs are the same no matter which restaurant you eat it in, so why not dust off the tuxedo and evening dress.||||Breakfast was also very nice and served in the The Nettlefold with great views back to the mainland. When your ready, you just let reception know and they will get a driver to take you back to your car on the mainland.||||Overall a fantastic experience I can't wait to repeat and repeat we will. We went to Burgh Island to celebrate a big birthday!|For our first night, we were in the Artist’s Studio, a very nice room with sea views above the Pilchard’s Inn. Unfortunately, after eating in the pub, we were kept awake by excessive noise from below which went on until late. A complaint to reception effected some improvement but some noise continued until about midnight when the last sea tractor left for the mainland.|In the morning, after a good breakfast, we asked for a room transfer, and the receptionist was quite hopeful that this would be possible . When we got back at about 3.30, our room, The George Formby Suite was ready. Gosh - what a surprise! A lovely suite with gorgeous sea views, with our suitcases already delivered. And after that, everything was well-nigh perfect. We went down, dressed in our finery, to the extraordinary cocktail bar at about 7 for a lovely drink and were ushered into the ballroom by our wonderful waitress, Martina, to have a quite outstanding meal, beautifully cooked and presented. A superb evening!|The staff were all helpful and cooperative but the star is, of course, the building and its contents and furnishings. It is absolutely stuffed with authentic art deco furniture, prints, pictures and objets d'art - breathtaking! I feel privileged to have visited the cocktail lounge and the ballroom in particular.|Very many thanks to Vlad and all the staff for an unforgettable visit! More...
