When you write a YELP review with 5 stars, it summarizes as "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" which 100% defines Fernando's workout classes. I came to Truve, and Fernando's class, looking to get back into shape and find a community. Not only did Fernando's class and Truve get me back into shape, they also made me stronger and more fit than I've ever been. Fernando shapes his classes to feel comfortable - again that sense of community Truve and he strive for and succeed at - while pushing you to your limits and getting an incredible all body workout. He peppers his class with information on healthy eating habits along with general fitness guidelines (how much cardio SHOULD you do along with weight training to see gains? How much protein do you really need to eat? Come to Fernando's Saturday noon class to find out!). I wanted to find a space in the East Bay that made me feel at home. A place where folks knew my name and I wasn't just trying to get in and get out as fast as I could. Fernando's class and Truve (especially the owner Alison) are not only the highlight of my week but have the added benefit of being a great healthy lifestyle choice. I've gotten a minute faster/mile on my 5K time in only a few months along with the ability to run longer distances; I've increased my weight lifting tremendously; I've found a gym and trainers that are inviting, warm, and friendly while absolutely kicking your butt. I highly recommend Fernando. I been training with Fernando for nine months and have seen noticeable improvements in my fitness and health. I met Fernando through his community kettlebell class and liked his energy and motivation. After a few group classes, I signed up for weekly personal training sessions. I felt as though I had plateaued in my own training and was aimlessly taking Class Pass group classes and weight lifting when I had time.Training with Fernando has been great as he has developed a specific nutrition and training program that I follow and he adjusts weekly based on my progress. The biggest issue I faced before working with Fernando was a lack of direction and focus. I always wanted to get stronger and eat healthier, but didn't have the tools or knowledge to see results. Fernando has educated me on proper weight lifting technique and nutrition strategies.Lastly, as my fitness goals changes, Fernando adapts the nutrition and training program for the week. He's always available by text or email to answer questions, which is helpful if I have a random question during the week. I've had a couple awesome stretching/ targeted massage sessions with Fernando and have left each time feeling like the areas with chronic tension are starting to get real some relief. I love training with Nando whenever I can! He's super attentive, energetic, encouraging, and funny! He is knowledgeable and pushes me beyond my comfort zone. I started heavy weight training because of him. I never thought I could squat more than 40lbs but I've come a long way since then. So, I'm super grateful! Fernando is the bomb dot com! His positive mentality is a breath of fresh air and helps me on days that I'm struggling. The workouts are fast-paced, extremely challenging, easy to remember (and therefore do on non-training days), and varied. I've been training with Fernando at Truve for a little under three months and saw my strength and dietary habits improve tremendously and become more consistent. Truve's space and support is also laudable - showers, massages, classes, and high-quality equipment. I appreciate that Fernando encourages frequent communication throughout the day. This type of personalization and accountability helps me to stay on track with my diet and workouts. Fernando's Kettlebell class is the most killer workout - I look forward to it every week! He does a great job of mixing up the moves and ensuring the entire class has proper form. What I love the most is that he is so encouraging for everyone to push themselves - and he remembers your abilities so that you continue to improve (aka you won't get away with trying to get an 'easy' weight - he'll make sure you're challenged!) Fernando has been my PT for more than 5 months now. I can only say he has been amazing!!! He's patient, understanding, always innovative and ready to listen and amend his training if needed. I am a new mom. I gained a lot of weight after giving birth to my son and since then my mood has been on/ off and my weight was a major issue. Fernando has always helped me look at the bright side and helped me get back on my feet again. Never gave up on me and was ready to restart when I failed. I highly recommend him. Fernando is an awesome trainer that knows his stuff. He will challenge you, push you, and test your limits. I got stronger, faster, and built up endurance from all the trainings I had with him. He is knowledgeable about kinesiology, creative about how to use weights, machines, and equipment in order to maximize your lifts and growth, and is extremely professional. I can't say enough amazing things about Fernando - he has completely transformed the way I work out and think about my body. His workouts are fast-paced, creative, and always challenging so I never get bored. Fernando helped coach me through my first NPC bikini bodybuilding competition where I placed top 5 in my class I have definitely learned a lot about weightlifting and nutrition through his knowledge. Fernando is a fantastic trainer and motivator. I did group classes and personal training with him for about a year before moving abroad. When I started, I hadn't worked out regularly in years and just didn't like the idea of going to the gym. Fernando helped change all that and the results, both physical and psychological, were so rewarding. For those of you, who have followed my health and fitness journey, you know that I started on a weight loss program about 5. 5 years ago, which morphed into body building competitions, then, into endurance road cycling, which led me to short distance running and obstacle course racing and now, into long distance running.  I'm in the process of trying to earn my own certifications as a personal trainer because I've had some amazing trainers and coaches.  One of my favorite trainers to work with on a regular basis is Fernando Montes.  He is one of the only trainers that I know that puts in time on a good warm-up to prevent injuries, he actually corrects form and provides explanation behind those corrections and also, his program design.  He pushes clients to their limits so that they can grow and he takes the time to explain so that they can learn.  I've experienced both his 1:1 sessions and his group classes and while 1:1 provides focused attention to your holistic short and long term health goals, his group classes provide a great workout and a chance of camaraderie among his clientele.  He also incorporates nutrition to assist you in reaching your physique goals.  I've also had the pleasure of watching his development as a NPC Male Physique Competitor.  He not only talks the talk to his clients, he walks the walk!  I live in SF, but whenever I am in Oakland and can fit in a workout with Nando, I try to do it b/c it is worth every rep! Writing this after finishing a group session so I won't let my fatigue influence the review :)Plain and simple...he'll push you and teach you to push yourself.  He's got an amazing attitude (anything is possible) and encourages everyone.  There is also no one-size-fits-all approach and he'll work with individuals to tweak anything needed to ensure you're getting the maximum out of every class.  He's also been accessible outside of class when there are questions on nutrition or on exercise routines while traveling.He's a top trainer - and if you're looking for a way to enjoy working out while getting results I can't think of a better place to start than with Fernando & Truve More...

I never write reviews but Fernandos program is worth mentioning. I met Fernando with the goal to develop a workout routine and nutrition plan to take my body to the next level. I've been working out for some time but found my results plateauing and certain muscle groups falling behind. It was very frustrating. Within several sessions using Fernandos intensity workouts and nutrition plan I've seen my body respond in ways I haven't seen in a while! I'm getting the burn back that I've been missing! As a chubby person, the gym was never a place I found comfortable. I would constantly struggle to identify as someone who belonged in a gym yet I knew I needed the gym to accomplish my goals. I would move from machine to machine not knowing what to do or how to use them. Having never stuck to a routine and getting disillusioned I would stop going and found myself in this loop for over 10 years. Fernando is currently helping me break this cycle. I have been training with Fernando for the last 4 months and it has been quite the experience. I have felt stronger and because of his advice have lost weight too! He has been able to provide me personalized workouts from introductory level to kick-my-ass level when I need them. He is very patient and able to educate me on proper form, the right amount of reps/sets for my own goals, and something that I never had before, advise on the nutrition side. Fernando and I meet once a week for an hour. During that hour we work on  a multitude of exercises that change week to week and he always makes sure that he keeps my goals in mind. After the hour, we usually agree/promise what will come next for me; whether I am going to go to the gym every day, 5 days, making sure to watch what I eat... but at the end, there is always an agreed upon deliverable which helps me with accountability. Overall, I highly recommend Fernando! He has been funny, strict, understanding, and everything I need in a personal trainer. Fernando is awesome! I see him more than I see most of my friends, going to his 30-20-10 and Lean Power Series classes. He runs a smooth, fast, and hard class with a sense of humor. He loves to tell you how easy his class is that day while you're sweating through burpees. ;)I've been going to Fernando's classes for over a year, starting as a complete weight lifting newbie, and he has pushed me to significantly increase the amount I am able to lift and the speed I'm able to run/bike at, always knowing when it's time for me to push a little harder. He is happy to share bits of his vast nutritional knowledge and is fantastic at providing guidance and modifications if you have an injury or just a tight hip flexor that day. I agree with all the 5 star reviews. Fernando is truly a darn good trainer and a good human. (Yes, people, this matters! ) I have taken his Kettlebell HIIT classes and the Lean Power Series classes. I guarantee that no one leaves without feeling as if they have put in WORK. His classes are challenging and leave you breathless and sweaty. He is awesome at getting you to push harder than you think you can in an encouraging and non-judgmental way. Fernando is so great that I don't even hate him when he suddenly announces we need to run around the block with the final 2 minutes of class. Go see this man! I started doing classes with Fernando a couple years ago, then personal training a little while later, and he helped push me farther than I honestly thought possible. I started out as a lifelong runner who never used weights -- or had any idea what I was doing with them. Fernando turned me into someone who now knows how to maintain a balanced workout routine that includes weights and interval training. One of my most favorite things in the world is getting a good workout. I work in very busy hospital and releasing my stress is working out. And lifting properly is important.  Fernando is multidimensional when it comes to training.  And he gives great recommendations to healing your body.... he knows what he is doing and makes you feel comfortable when your around him. I love this guy. He continues to push me and motivates to better me. Can't ask for a better trainer. I will continue with him and see where he takes me. This week Fernando stepped in for our usual trainer at Truve, while out of town. He set up a really challenging circuit of super sets for our session. Good instruction of each exercise and how to vary reps and resistance for different outcomes. It was fun, challenging and felt like we got a lot of work done in an hour. Would def do it again. Fernando is the  knees! In the last several months I have seen my body transform into something I didn't know it could be and that's mostly just from working out with him 1x a week and following his advice on what to eat. My favorite things about his workouts are 1) I notice a lot of the movements translate to things I do or need to do in everyday life so carrying heavy things to my car or tons of groceries up stairs? No problem. Lifting heavy boxes when I was moving apartments? Piece of cake! Sprinting a quarter mile to catch the bus when I'm running late? Not easy but possible. I feel so capable now! (Used to be skinny fat ) 2) Fernando is fun! And super supportive and encouraging. Can also do some mild therapy when nec. We chit chat a lot, so now sessions are like working out with a bud and I look forward to it. He listens to what I want or need but also challenges me to push myself. More...

Fernando is GREAT!  My wife and I attend his classes regularly.  We try to get to at least two of his three weekly classes at Truve (either the 30-20-10, Kettlebells HIIT or Lean Power workout). His workouts are HARD.  He WILL push you to work harder, jump higher, do more reps, use heavier weights and IMPROVE.  I had previously had an aversion to class workouts.  I did my usual 60-90 minute workout at 24 hour fitness for years.  I thought I was in pretty good shape sometimes.  BUT taking Fernando's classes have taken my fitness to another level.  Thank YOU Fernando!  You kicking my ass and pushing me to do more is what I need.  FIVE STARS! I met Fernando almost 3 years ago when I was at a super low. I needed someone to be my accountability partner, personal trainer, and personal cheerleader to help me get strong again physically and mentally. He was/is all those things and more. I don't know how, but he has a way of pushing you without making you feel like crap. (He kinda guilts you into doing more because he believes you can and is so positive?) Fernando's classes (Kettlebell HIIT & Lean Power Series) are intense and his personal training sessions are brutal -- just what the doctor ordered!  He's very precise about form and pushes you to your limits (safely) so you might think you're dying from time to time, but you'll leave feeling accomplished and pretty bad ass because you made it through.  I would definitely recommend if you're trying to make some serious changes/improvements in your fitness level but you definitely have to commit to reap rewards. I randomly took Fernando's Kettlebell class one day and was pretty shocked how challenging and fun the class was.  The one hour will kick your butt and you will likely be sore the next day.  In a good way.  I skeptically approached Fernando the following week about personal training sessions (never even considered the idea prior) but had been wanting to get 'in shape' for awhile.  He was extremely patient with my little knowledge of training/experience with weights heavier than 5lbs and made me feel comfortable despite wanting to puke of exhaustion. He's extremely positive and manages a balance of motivation and patience as you sweat through your workout.  I would recommend him to anyone looking for a challenge and wants to spice up their workouts. Fernando is an awesome trainer! I take his group classes typically twice a week at Truve (Kettlebell HIIT and Lean Power Series), and they are consistently challenging and leave me sore in the best possible way. His classes have a really nice mix of they switch up week to week but have some essential exercises that you do in every class. That way, you can get a good variety but also make sure that you're increasing your weights.. and I've definitely gotten significantly stronger over the 8 months or so I've been taking classes from him! He gives excellent personal attention, is super hands-on, and is overall a really great guy. He leads a bunch of group classes at Truve, and I highly recommend you give one a try. Fernando is awesome. I take his kettlebell HIIT class, and its probably the best group training class I've ever been to. Ive been doing kettlebells for a year, and it never gets easy...in a good way! The workouts are very well organized. There is a nice flow from one exercise to the next, with a perfect ratio of strength to cardio. Fernando's classes are always challenging, but he keeps you motivated for the whole hour and you leave feeling great. He is very attentive to everyone in the class and will correct your form and give you advice on how to improve, making you feel very welcome.I also just did a personal training session with him, which was (of course!) an intense and fun workout. I can't say enough good things about Fernando! Fernando's classes at Truve are challenging but in a good way and you always feel great after his class. You can tell Fernando's true passion is health & fitness. He shows this through how he lives his life everyday and how he motivates everyone else around him. He is great at paying attention to your form in a large class setting and he constantly mixes up the exercises. My only complaint about Fernando is that I wish he taught more classes that worked with my schedule so I could go to more of them :). I LOVE Fernando's kettlebell HIIT class! It's a brutal, efficient workout, but somehow I finish feeling great every time.
