I was working for a large PR firm in Beverly Hills, heading up their international entertainment division. Meanwhile, I was going through a divorce, had just moved to a tiny guesthouse in Malibu and got so sick, I couldn't lift my head from my pillow for 10 days. Understandably so now that I'm a business owner, my boss called and fired me over the phone and brought in another agent who had a big book of business. I was so sick, I put down the phone, slipping back into my delirium. When I woke and realized that I'd just lost my job, I decided to take my own best advice: "pain is resistance to change." I did nothing but go to the beach for a week or so and called no one. Within a week, the phone rang with an old client, the luxury party designer, Colin Cowie. "It was you doing the work, not the agency, would you do it for us?" he asked. I agreed thinking that would at least cover my rent. Next, Mike Love of The Beach Boys, an old client called to say he was opening a restaurant. I agreed to help him. Then, when I called The Beach Boys manager to get a photo of Mike for a magazine, he said: "Oh we're hiring you too." I looked at my dog, Rocky Brown, a chocolate Lab and said: "well I guess we're starting a company, what shall we call it?" He got first billing as "Brown" and, of course, I'm "Dutch." It all tumbled into my lap and started a life I never expected in one of the cherished places on earth. That was 23 years ago.
