We have lived in Luray for 14 years and never been. I wish it didn't take us 14 yrs to try this place. Old style diner setting, very clean. Awesome wait staff! Good food! We will be going back. I was so tired of the crap restaurant choices and now we found a good one. Must try! We ordered off the menu and didn't try the salad bar that they have. Will have to try it next time. More...

This restaurant is a super great place to stop in. It is very clean (the young girl busting tables was quick and efficient), the restrooms very clean, the service was wonderful, and the food superb.  My wife just learned she is gluten intolerant and the waitress and owner were more knowledgeable than us and made sure she ordered all the right foods.  The gentleman who checked us out was super friendly and even told a funny joke!  What a great way to end our visit!  The only suggestion I would have is to carry a gluten free dessert (ie. Bryer's  ice cream is gluten free).  Other than that, I would highly recommend this restaurant! More...

On a recent trip to Shenandoah Caverns, we decided on the way back home to stop for an early dinner. Not many options out this way, although we passed at least 3 restaurants which had gone out of business. Brookside didn't have the greatest ratings on Yelp, but we decided to try it anyway. Good choice. We had an appetizer of onion rings, which were very good. I had the Brookside burger & fries, which was outstanding. My wife had the grilled chicken sandwich, which was pretty basic. The place is kind of rustic, and the service was okay. I would recommend you give it a try if you're spending a day out this way. More...

Cute roadside restaurant just outside of Shenandoah. Food is decent and homemade, service is warm, inviting, and friendly, and prices are good. I had the soup and salad bar, my husband had the meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Nothing extraordinary, but it was satiating after a day of hiking and I like to patronize mom & pops when I can. Would definitely come back and possibly stay in the cute little log cabins next door! More...

After traveling most of the morning and immediately touring Luray Caverns, DreamBoat and I were famished. We took a quick look at the Luray Cavern Cafe menu board and said "Blargh" in unison. So we hopped in the car to further explore the area hoping to find a quick, good bite to eat. Lo and behold, we stumbled upon Brookside Restaurant. There is nothing fancy about Brookside. There is a grouping of cabins, a tiny general store of some sort, the restaurant and a few outbuildings all set beside the main road leading to the National Park. We like to try the local eateries rather than the chains, so we stopped in. It was a good decision.Upon entering, we were transported to the fine dining restaurants of small town America circa 1985 complete with wood paneling. The main dining area included a tiny full-service bar, a small lunch buffet, and a banquet room set toward the back. That's not meant to be offensive. It was clean, comfortable and staffed with the happiest and most helpful waitress we've had in quite some time. The menu had multiple options reminiscent of your typical diner and/or American family restaurant. I selected a Reuben without the Devil's Condiment laden sauce along with fries. DreamBoat ordered a pork sandwich with onion rings. Yum! The sandwiches arrived in good time and were tasty. My fries were excellent. There are times when I want seasoned fries or the wedges. But there are other times when I want to taste potato without a bunch of frilly extras. These hit the mark. The potatoes were fried in clean oil (that's right, they didn't taste like last night's fried chicken or the morning's hash browns) and only very lightly salted. They needed no ketchup. They were perfect just as they were. DreamBoat devoured his sandwich and onion rings (yes, he did offer me one) and then finished the part of my sandwich and fries that I couldn't.We were VERY happy with our meal and the service was impeccable. I really wish I could recall our waitress' name. Afterward, we meandered toward some squawking noises beside the parking lot and found three peacocks in a peacock house. They were fun to watch as they spread their beautiful feathers and preened around. If you're in Luray and want a good, no-frills meal, stop by Brookside Restaurant. You won't be disappointed. We really enjoyed our overnight stay at Brookside. The restaurant was great as was our little cozy cabin. My husband had the peanut butter pie for dessert. And it was delicious  We shared Rockfish fingers, very good. Breakfast the next day was just as good. The breakfast buffet had a taste of everything and most made 2 trips. You can also order from a menu. The grits were real country grits not watery nasty  ones. Make sure to go out back and see the peacocks! We will definitely go back. It's close enough for a day trip. And shopping on Main Street in Luray is a must! More...

Yummy food and excellent service. We got a recommendation to come here from our zipline instructors (half mile down the road, Bear Mountain). They described it as a great local diner and recommended the Brookside burger and fries. We were there on a Sunday at about 3pm. Seated right away. There was a buffet option (salad bar, fried chicken, roasted pork, fried butterfly shrimp, and variety of comfort food sides. It looked good, but I ordered the chicken tenders basket (craving) and fiancé got the stuffed flounder. They were both great! We came here after checking out Luray caverns. This place is quaint and quiet. I was kind of skeptical about trying the food here at first look, but don't let the looks fool you. We had a group of 8 people and we ordered items off the menu. Everything was fantastic and it was delivered super quick. They also had a buffet but it didn't look that appetizing. Plus, if you did the buffet, you were only given the option of one trip and basically had to load your plate on that one trip. So we stuck to the menu items and all of our group members were satisfied with their meals. I personally had the cheeseburger with onion rings and those onion rings were delicious!!!! Our waitress was super attentive and very friendly. If you guys are anywhere near this place, don't let the exterior deter you from trying out this place! More...

Hearty country comfort food with a smile. Not fancy, maybe a bit kitschy, but sometimes you want good authentic home style cooking that's not an interstate chain restaurant approximation. Started with the house salad which was nothing special, but huge with homemade blue cheese dressing for only $2.50. I tried the hot turkey sandwich and couldn't have been happier with it. Clearly roasted "in-house" turkey (i.e. not deli meat) moist turkey sitting on fresh baked sourdough toast and covered in gravy as was the mashed potatoes. Finished my meal with fresh made cherry pie with a buttery flakey crust topped with whipped cream. After finishing a respectable Reuben with fries, my wife -- a peanut butter pie aficionado -- absolutely loved her dessert as well.Brookside Restaurant embodies everything about homey country cooking that is unpretentious and just good. I'll find more excuses to wander down this way in the future. More...

First time for lunch.  Food was excellent.  You could tell it was made from scratch.  Husband's fish was perfect.  Awesome coleslaw.  Heard about their dinner buffet so went back that night.  Not a whole lot but enough to fill you up.  Barbecue chicken fell off the bone.  Had real hamburger patties in gravy and mushroom, not some mystery meat patty most places have.  Nice salad bar. Had homemade desserts.  The coconut cake looked awesome.  Staff very nice and attentive.  I love the morning staff especially.  One of the cooks was actually a close neighbor.  This will be our new favorite place since there is not a whole lot in Luray. (overheard the waitress say she made it in batches herself!). Menu prices were very reasonable. The decor was very down-home. The outside looks simple and blended with the character of the area. I liked it because it's a throwback to 1970's fare. The price is fair. The help was friendly. Is the pretentious 'Whole Foods crowd' going to see this place on the Travel or Food channels anytime soon? No. This is not the place for a foodie who would not put anything less than freshly picked-off-the-vine into their mouth. Stay in Reston if you don't want your corn swimming in a cup of butter. However, I will say that there is a disclaimer on the menu indicating that only canola oil is used to fry foods. Rejoice! Again. This place is perfect after a day in the park. While we were staying in Shenandoah, Brookside Restaurant was the first place we would pass coming down the mountain into Luray.  We finally stopped to eat here one of our last nights there. It's a cute place with friendly service and lots of locals.  I decided to be adventurous and try their veggie steak.  It says on their menu it's their top secret recipe and I was really curious.  I was pleasantly surprised!  It was kind of like a pancake and it tasted like stuffing.  My only suggestion would be to have a side of mashed potatoes with it instead of fruit.  I also thought their sweet potato fries were very tasty. I would go here again if I came back to Shenandoah.  Tip:  If you come here for dinner, keep your eye out for bears if you're driving back up into the mountains.  Both of our bear sightings were in the car as the sun was setting while we were driving back to Skyland Resort from Luray.
