Personality Disorders Educational Cards
My aim was to design a set of playing/educational cards promoting a better understanding of personality disorders giving a brief overview of mental health issues. Personality disorders distort people’s ability my intention is to incorporate those characteristic into the design with the use of art movements/ trends relying on deconstructing or distorting. As I observed there are many similarities between disabled bodies and post modern art movements as deconstructivism. Disabled body is an object of deconstruction, they live with a damaged body and even might been manipulated with operations, even though personality disorders are invisible the sufferers faced with a change of appearance. My design outcome, a set of educational cards have an expressionists & deconstructivist artistic interpretation. Expressionists using the distortion of form to convey feeling of darkness , they try to express the meaning what can’t be seen. Fragmentation represent a personality disorder, a mental illness by physical distortion. The content that carries the information educate others about the characteristic of identity with disability and raise awareness. My overall aim is to promoting mental health and reduce stigma. The final outcomes tend to make an emotional impact on the viewer but must not be frightening or evoke feelings of disgust. With the messy line art style I tried to interpret emotions clearly, make others see mental health through art and most of all be original. My audience are the young generation for who I designed the cards accordingly. My main purpose were to educate and raise awareness.
Book cover Design for Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson
The book is very rich in symbols. We can only guess what the oranges most likely are associated with, they surely have a hidden message. I decided upon 2 interesting symbols which I wanted to combine. Church and feminism. I wanted to create an optical illusion that makes the viewer’s eyes fooled and has two interpretations. It’s up to the person how he/she interprets it as it carries dual meanings. I later added another symbol, the birds that referring to Jeanett, how badly she wanted to break free from the religious society. from the small city. The second most important element , the image in the back, is a smaller version of the front design from a different perspective. With the text they create the shape of the feminism sign. By turning the book the mood changes to more serious and it gets dramatic. The dark scenery suggest sadness with the sun going down. The orange sun rays are highlighting the church windows in the background. Hopefully by looking at my finished piece it will allow the reader into the insight of Jeanette’s perspective, and deliver the message: don’t judge a book by it’s cover, everyone has different opinions and representations of thing which is entirely up to the person. When brainstorming I was looking for shapes and symbols which are rather similar and can be associated then tried to link them together in this case the church with the woman body. To represent the difference between characters I used contradictions put design elements in high contrast, literally all the elements have dual meaning. The contradictions emphasising the two different perspectives known from the book. The good, guided by rules against the rebellious bad. When I set the tone of my design creating the moodboard I was determined to use orange and blue complimentary colours with the possibility of adding black that conveys a sense of sadness. I wanted to use colours that express the emotional truth. It is a powerful way to convey emotion in design. Orange refers back to the core symbol of the story, blue also has hidden meaning, it’s a cold colour that can be depressing, and can represent an uncaring spirit, from a religious point of view it is associated with Virgin Mary.
CHISTY - LUXURY VODKA PACKAGING
THIS BRIEF WAS SPONSORED BY THE METAL PACKAGING MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION. STARPACK SCHOOLS AND STUDENT AWARDS ENCOURAGE DESIGNERS TO JOIN THE PACKAGING SECTOR AND BUILD A CAREER AROUND IT. THEY SUPPORT INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING. THE MPMA IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST METAL PACKAGING INDUSTRIES IN THE UK. THEY PROMOTE THE BENEFITS OF METAL PACKAGING, MAINLY USING STEEL AND ALUMINIUM. THEY CREATE PRODUCT PACKAGING THAT IS MADE FROM SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS. THEY ARE COMMITTED TO COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS THAT AVOID CREATING WASTE AND THIS BRIEF URGES DESIGNERS TO DO THE SAME ALONG WITH AESTHETICALLY PLEASING DESIGN. I WAS ASKED TO DESIGN PRIMARY AND SECONDARY PACKAGE MATERIALS INCLUDING A METAL TINPLATE THAT FUNCTIONS AS A GIFT BOX OF A FICTIONS VODKA BRAND. DURING THE PROJECT I HAD TO CONSIDER CREATIVE PRODUCTION AND PRINT SOLUTION TECHNIQUES, APPLICATION OF SEMIOTICS ON LUXURY HIGH END ALCOHOL PACKAGING TO COMMUNICATE BRAND VALUE. THIS PROJECT INVOLVED ME IN ESTABLISHING A BRAND THAT HAS A STORY BEHIND AND DESIGNING A PACKAGE THAT IS MULTIFUNCTIONAL MADE FROM SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS, AND PROVE THAT ECO-FRIENDLY CONCEPTS AND AESTHETICALLY PLEASING DESIGN CAN GO HAND IN HAND. THE MAIN AIM OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO EXPRESS BRAND IN MATERIAL AND TRANSLATE DESIGN STRATEGY INTO CREATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR PACKAGING. THE DESIGN MUST BE BOTH FUNCTIONALLY AND AESTHETICALLY PLEASING. DURING THE DESIGN PROCESS MY STRATEGY FOCUSED ON MATERIALS, MULTIFUNCTIONAL USES, INNOVATION, CREATIVE PRINTING FINISHES, QUALITY, HISTORY AND ORIGINALITY. MY DESIGN IS VERY MUCH BUILT ON TYPOGRAPHY, PATTERN AND STORYTELLING. IT HAS A RUSSIAN CONSTRUCTIVISM THEME, SO THE GRAPHIC ELEMENTS NEEDED TO REFLECT THIS. CONSTRUCTIVISM, CHARACTERIZED BY ASYMMETRIC COMPOSITION, PLACEMENT OF GEOMETRIC SHAPES, STRONG COLOUR CONTRASTS, COLOURFUL LAYERS, PHOTOMONTAGES, OVERPRINTING EFFECTS, AND DYNAMIC PERSPECTIVE COMPOSITIONS, GEOMETRICALLY REFINED STROKES. I HAVE CONSIDERED SOME OF THESE IN MY DESIGN. CONSEQUENTLY THE LOGO IS BOLD, GEOMETRIC, MODERN BUT SIMPLE, SAN SERIF FONT PROVIDES CLARITY THANKS TO IT’S SIMPLIFIED LETTERFORMS, AND SUITABLE FOR LASER CUTTING, THE PATTERN ALSO INFLUENCED BY THE MOVEMENT. TO ACHIEVE THE FINAL DESIGN I HAVE JOINED THE LETTER ‘H’ AND THE DOT ON THE LETTER ‘I’ . IT RESULTED IN A GEOMETRIC SHAPE, THAT IS THE MAIN CHARACTERISTIC OF CONSTRUCTIVISM. THE OUTLINES OF THE SAN SERIF TYPEFACE ARE SIMILAR TO GEOMETRIC ELEMENTS. ALSO THE CIRCLE SHAPE MEANT TO REPRESENT A WATER DROP THAT IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE MAIN INGREDIENT OF VODKA. MY FINAL PACKAGING OUTCOME IS FUNCTIONALLY AND AESTHETICALLY PLEASING. THE SECONDARY PACKAGING FUNCTIONS AS A LANTERN THAT MAKES THE PRODUCT COLLECTABLE AND MORE SELLABLE. MY FINAL PACKAGE DEMONSTRATES A GREAT INTERPRETATION OF THE BRIEF AND GOOD USE OF SPECIAL EFFECTS ON BOTH PACK AND BOTTLE. DURING THIS PROJECT I HAVE GAINED INSIGHTS INTO INNOVATIVE DESIGN SOLUTIONS BY LOOKING AT ECOLOGICAL SUSTAINABILITY AND UNDERSTOOD THE PRINCIPLES OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN ESPECIALLY IN THE METAL PACKAGE MANUFACTURING SECTOR.
I have crafted a brand that reflects the real taste of India for a restaurant based in Barnsley. It was a challenge to choose from the concepts as we felt they were all very strong but we went for the handsome indian chap with the turban, as we thought this design really hit the spot.. and it turned out to B a success!
