This is the oldest eating establishment in Newcastle &, it claims, in the UK.
Have a drink in the bar or walk around the quadrant, it is so atmospheric. The food is top notch too. There are cookery classes, private dining.... More...

Visited for a floral demonstration by Northumberland Flowers followed by a three course ladies lunch. Fabulous form beginning to end. The staff were all lovely right from making the booking .Special thanks to Charlotte who sorted out my gift voucher. The set menu had at least four choices of starter, mains and desert. The food was all delicious and served piping hot with a glass of nice wine. Would recommend and will definitely be back. More...

Great food, great service, superb atmosphere, great place. Food beautifully cooked. Note that the menu is accurate, if it says potato it means one potato! Excellent atmosphere and the building is amazing though the music could have been more to our taste and the bar counter perhaps less cluttered. We had a wonderful evening. More...

Really classy restaurant, comfortable, relaxed and friendly service. Staff were knowledgeable about the meals, and ensured that they checked on ingredients to meet dietary requirements. All four of us were thrilled with the food, it was well cooked and plentiful. Overall the evening presented us with good value for money, in a pleasant environment. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this restaurant. More...

Good food. The menu wasn’t for veggies but for meat eaters it was perfect. The price was near the high end, but the quality was very good. However it was the service I found outstanding, every member of staff( either in the bar or Resturant) was exceptionally friendly and helpful. It’s great service which always makes our night and brings us back. More...

Personally I would have preferred larger portions but meal was full of flavour and really nice. Can be a little on the expensive side but they do a great 2 or 3 course set menu offer early doors. Staff great, really friendly. So much more to Blackfriars than just the restaurant though with plenty of cookery classes, beer, wine and whiskey tasting nights, medieval themed banquets... Great place for a treat or something different and set in a beautiful building, adds to the uniqueness and atmosphere More...

Diverse menu. Excellent preparation. Quality rather than quantity, but at a reasonable price. The setting is a former Dominican refectory in a friary. I had the beef wellington. Crisp and flaky with a nice rich sticky sauce. It come with a small piece of flank. The flank was 2-3 ounces and the wellington 2 inches long. Mashed peas were nicely seasoned. Fascinating classes are offered, and may be the real bargain here, but they fill a month in advance. More...

I had a 3 course meal of scallops, fillet steak, and cheese board with the port pairing. I'm usually wary ordering steaks because I rarely get them cooked properly. I ordered medium rare and I cannot fault it at all. Presentation of all the dishes were second only to the flavours.
The service was impeccable and all staff were well informed and so polite. The complimentary amuse-bouche were a perfect appetiser for the table.
I cannot recommend Blackfriars enough and will certainly return to try more of the menu.

Beautiful building, medieval vibe inside, lovely staff. The menu looks pretty standard & the portions aren't large, but it tastes absolutely divine & actually there is just the right amount for 3 courses to not leave you feeling over full. I don't remember there being any steps to get in but the space available for manoeuvre wouldn't be enough for a wheelchair and the outside ground is uneven. The restaurant was accommodating of children & babies. More...

We visited Blackfriars with a friend who was in town. The restaurant is a beautiful old building with lots of charm, with a dining area, a great hall (for functions) and a bar in a separate building across the way.

Our meals were lovely, as was the service. The staff were extremely friendly and courteous. The ambience of the restaurant area is relaxed and laid back. It's just a beautiful place to dine!

Downsides were we had to wait a little longer than expected for our meal (the lovely waiter brought us across some drinks to soften the delay) and my vegetarian friend was limited in her choice, as despite being advertised as vegetarian-friendly, there were only two veggie meals on the menu.

The cost for the main meal for three, a nice bottle of wine, plus three desserts, was £140. Definitely not a budget option, but the food was lovely and service great. Diners before 7 pm can choose from a separate set menu which we didn't try, yet seemed good value.

Lovely place, extremely patient waiting staff, food was mostly nice if a bit overcooked. I went for the pan fried chicken which was delicious. It was the extras that cost us. I was advised to buy chips (£4 I think) which were totally unnecessary, and the beef Wellington which my friend ate was extra as well. Also, his beef was overdone and the random loose beef that was on the side (outside the Wellington!) was extremely fatty and difficult to eat. I would come again More...
