Janet was quick to help me get to grips with some basic bookkeeping which I couldn't get my head around.

An accountant is for life, not just for year-end!

Many people only think of using an accountant for compliance i.e. for filing tax returns and statutory annual accounts. These are the minimum requirements for a business to meet, and so often that is all they think an accountant can do.

For us, compliance is the boring stuff, the box-ticking we have to do for our clients to make sure they are not going to get any fines or penalties.

The really exciting stuff for us is getting to understand our client's business, meeting them and talking about their dreams and goals. Once we know what these are, we can work with them to help them to really understand how their business is performing, and what they need to do to achieve those dreams. We are your partner, working alongside you to listen and provide support and advice whenever you need it.

We are proactive and will be constantly reviewing your business needs. Unlike many accountants, we will not just accept things at face value - we will interrogate the data and seek to optimise tax savings wherever possible. In a constantly changing tax and financial regulatory environment we will keep you informed of any changes that might affect your business to ensure you do not get caught out.

We understand that minimising costs is important, but hiring an accountant could be one of the best business decisions you make! We offer affordable monthly packages that suit your needs and can be upgraded as your business grows.

I love helping people feel confident about their finances. Many people I meet find dealing with their finances confusing, or even frightening. I love teaching them how to understand their numbers and use simple tools to keep track of their money as easily as possible. The best reward is when I see the penny drop for a client when they learn something new. The big smile on their face always makes my day!

I completed my training to become a Chartered Accountant with Deloitte in 1996, specialising in audit within the financial services and insurance industries in the City of London. In 1997 I moved into investment banking, working within the financial control and regulatory functions of the banks. I specialised in change and project management, working closely with in-house software developers to develop accounting and reporting software solutions to meet the rapidly changing regulatory requirements. I discovered I loved working with technology to automate routine accounting tasks as well as training bank staff to use the software.

After 15 years' in the City I wanted a change of lifestyle, so I changed career to work within the charity sector and moved out of London to a rural idyll. For the last 10 years I have specialised in charity finance, heading up the Finance function and also managing other administrative functions including IT, HR and Facilities.

The combination of my technolgy skills, experience of change management and running a complex organisation on a very limited budget inspired me to pioneer changes in the charities I was managing to find ways for them to become more efficient and make the maximum use of their limited resources, using technology and making changes to the way they worked.

Building on these successes, I was inspired to set up my accountancy practice to offer the same vision to small local businesses. The pace of technological change is quickening and small businesses are often ill-equipped to keep up or even know where to start. I believe that traditional accountancy practices and methods will soon be replaced by technology-based solutions, partly driven by the government making changes to how companies are required to comply with tax legislation.

In 2018 I set up Black Lab Accounting, a digital practice for the future of accountancy.

I am a qualified Chartered Accountant with over 25 years' experience. I am a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. I am fully insured and registered with the Information Commissioner's Office as a data processor, my practice is GDPR compliant and strict confidentiality is maintained at all times.
