Had dinner and drinks at Black Forest Brooklyn on Thursday evening. Good food and an excellent beer list makes it a spot to check out. Quality: I came in just to grab a drink and the next thing I knew I had a massive feast on my table. The Brezel with added cheese was delicious. Soft and savory, plus a great sweet sauce on the side to go along with the spicy mustard. I also ended up with a Currywurst using Kasebratwurst, a sausage made of spicy pork, beef, and NY cheddar. I loved the curry sauce, though I do wish it came with a pretzel bun instead of the kaiser bun. Still a great dish, and one I was happy to lap up the sauce for. In terms of beer I went with the Schneider Aventinus, a wheat doppelbock. They have a long list of German style beers, and I was happy to talk through them with my waitress to find the perfect fit.Quantity: All the food comes out in huge quantities and the beer pours are ridiculous.Value: $7 for the Brezel with Cheese. $12 for the Currywurst. $10 for a Scheider Aventinus Draft.Ambiance: Black Forest Brooklyn is located near Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn. The restaurant has a very cool style, taking advantage of the unique elements of the building. Industrial lighting, exposed brick, and a layered ceiling all set the mood. I loved that they used picnic tables, bringing the spirit of beer halls to the space. Artwork for sale hung on the walls, and the pieces seemed to fit into the space appropriately. The only thing I didn't get was the loud dance music that pumped from the speakers.Crowd: A small crowd on Thursday evening. A few folks having an after work drink at the bar, and then some couples enjoying dinner.Service: Friendly server who was happy to provide details and recommendations for both food and beer.Parking: Some street parking can be found in the nearby residential areas. A delicious but not stereotypical German "Biergarten." Expect variations like eggplant schnitzel and spicy citrus kale salad, and potato pancakes that are light and oniony and lightly enhanced by sweet spices (allspice, clove? ). And great beers, including the wonderfully light good accompaniment of a wheat beer and grapefruit shandy. Chill atmosphere completes the vibe. More...

First time visiting Black Forest Brooklyn and was surprised actually. Always passed it because there always packed outside but went on a Monday during the day and had a lot of tables available. Not really into Bratwurst but wanted to try something different. I ordered the "Die Wurstplatte" was pretty good 4 different bratwurst with 3 sides is a good deal for $32. I truly enjoyed my lunch today at this establishment. The eggs were made up sunny up to perfection with an awesome organic salad and delish flavor caramelized onion potatoes.  The bread was basic white bread with is cool with me I am not a big bread person.  I also had an ice coffee with was bold enough for my pallet.  The atmosphere was fine not really noisy perfect for lunch on a Friday afternoon.   The server was pleasant the food came in a timely fashion. Anything with spicy citrus kale on it: seriously all vegetarian options everyone should be this good. Currywurst: YAS. Beer selection: robust, especially for this area. I have liked everything I have tried. Brunch gravy and biscuits: YAS. Service: consistently friendly and professional. Not too fussy. Space: roomy and great for groups. Being German, I can tell you that this is the real thing. They know how to pour a beer properly, what a Flammkuchen is supposed to taste like and surprisingly, also what a great Italy-class cappuccino is supposed to taste like. You'd be surprised that this is a place that makes an espresso shot with a perfect balance of bitter notes and acids and on top of that also knows how to steam the milk just right to get a perfect creamy texture. If you hit the right bartender, you'll also be surprised with some cute latte art. Food:Pretzel was great.  I loved that it wasn't the giant pretzel a lot of places have but was a "normal" size.  Had the pork schnitzel and spaetzle both were very good.  I could hear them "tenderizing" the meat in the back.  Sounded like they gave it a good workout.  I also like that they gave me a big glass of water as soon as I sat down.  I'll be back. I enjoyed the music being played and the staff was courteous. The menu looked okay.  As an extremely selective eater, I didn't try the more traditional menu items. I enjoyed my humungous fish sandwich, sides, and fries.  The very mini ice cream cup was a nice treat at the end. My friend and I stopped in recently--didn't check out any of the eats there, but they had a really extensive menu of all types of German food. There were also a number of seating options--with stools along the window to look outside, and a number of private & communal tables. On a busy Saturday night, it seemed like there were still a few seats to be snagged, which is always good. (It is true that space is the true commodity in this city...). More...

Pricey but legit. My German friend wants to move to Cobble Hill because of this place. He told me that the beer tastes like home, but the price reminds him of what it takes to survive in NYC. It's got a hipster vibe, a somewhat spacious back area with a big overhead for your football or whatever show. It has legit food like Black Forest Cherry Gateau which has been branded as True German food (by the same friend). More cherry would have made it better and the portion for $9 should be larger, in my non-german opinion. It had the weisswurst ($16) and my friend had wurstkorb with Freiburg taste ($12). My drink Weihenstephan hefe dunkel ($8) was good - fruity and light. Radeberger pilsner ($7) has been deemed real German beer and my friend says you can't go wrong with it. It tastes like home, he says. You can choose between .5L and 1L .Sauerkraut is fine but is slightly sweeter than what he's used to. Pretzel is good, but it didn't come with butter. Kaiser bun with wurstkorb is worth remember because he was amazed at its flavor and wondered if it was imported because it tasted like home. The weisswurst came in some sort of a broth. Remember to peel off the casing when you're eating the wursts! Has wifi.Nice but slow service. Quite dim.tasty food. More...

Black Forest still has it going on. Yes, it is very very similar to the place up on Fulton street, but that is 100% OK in my book, as I really loved living close to the OG location. They have virtually the same beer (save maybe one draught that is only available at the other store), and the same menu. The layout is similar as well, with bench style seating and a decently sized bar. They are super kid friendly which is nice for anyone who has kids or friends with kid, but still wants a 1/2 liter of German goodness. I personally go with a dunkle or kellerbier, unless I am in the mood for some night night juice, then that calls for the Aventinus (a liter of that is seriously dangerous). As for the food, the schnitzel looked legit (will def try next time), the sausage platter lets you chose your own four (go with the cheese brat), comes with a few sides, and is great for sharing, and the giant pretzel is...well a giant pretzel (also very good for sharing)Come here with friends, have a few liters of beer, and a large pretzel, you're guaranteed to have a good time.
