Had dinner and drinks at Black Forest Brooklyn on Thursday evening. Good food and an excellent beer list makes it a spot to check out. Quality: I came in just to grab a drink and the next thing I knew I had a massive feast on my table. The Brezel with added cheese was delicious. Soft and savory, plus a great sweet sauce on the side to go along with the spicy mustard. I also ended up with a Currywurst using Kasebratwurst, a sausage made of spicy pork, beef, and NY cheddar. I loved the curry sauce, though I do wish it came with a pretzel bun instead of the kaiser bun. Still a great dish, and one I was happy to lap up the sauce for. In terms of beer I went with the Schneider Aventinus, a wheat doppelbock. They have a long list of German style beers, and I was happy to talk through them with my waitress to find the perfect fit.Quantity: All the food comes out in huge quantities and the beer pours are ridiculous.Value: $7 for the Brezel with Cheese. $12 for the Currywurst. $10 for a Scheider Aventinus Draft.Ambiance: Black Forest Brooklyn is located near Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn. The restaurant has a very cool style, taking advantage of the unique elements of the building. Industrial lighting, exposed brick, and a layered ceiling all set the mood. I loved that they used picnic tables, bringing the spirit of beer halls to the space. Artwork for sale hung on the walls, and the pieces seemed to fit into the space appropriately. The only thing I didn't get was the loud dance music that pumped from the speakers.Crowd: A small crowd on Thursday evening. A few folks having an after work drink at the bar, and then some couples enjoying dinner.Service: Friendly server who was happy to provide details and recommendations for both food and beer.Parking: Some street parking can be found in the nearby residential areas. A delicious but not stereotypical German "Biergarten." Expect variations like eggplant schnitzel and spicy citrus kale salad, and potato pancakes that are light and oniony and lightly enhanced by sweet spices (allspice, clove? ). And great beers, including the wonderfully light good accompaniment of a wheat beer and grapefruit shandy. Chill atmosphere completes the vibe. More...

Came in last night and had a blast! I know nothing about German beer or food and the bartender gave me some great suggestions. The German IPA was so good! Fried mushrooms, Schnitzel, kasebrat, sautéed kale alll stellar! So glad I tried this place out, I can't wait to come back! More...

First time visiting Black Forest Brooklyn and was surprised actually. Always passed it because there always packed outside but went on a Monday during the day and had a lot of tables available. Not really into Bratwurst but wanted to try something different. I ordered the "Die Wurstplatte" was pretty good 4 different bratwurst with 3 sides is a good deal for $32. I also got the German breakfast which came with a bunch of tasty stuff. Service, food, decor was all good. I'll come back and try the beer next time! More...

It's Octoberfest but since I'm not drinking I will amuse myself with a love story, Bavarian-style._For this week's random restaurant pick is this German beer garden in Brooklyn with a romantic origin. I truly enjoyed my lunch today at this establishment. The eggs were made up sunny up to perfection with an awesome organic salad and delish flavor caramelized onion potatoes.  The bread was basic white bread with is cool with me I am not a big bread person.  I also had an ice coffee with was bold enough for my pallet.  The atmosphere was fine not really noisy perfect for lunch on a Friday afternoon.   The server was pleasant the food came in a timely fashion. I like the wooden tables and chairs adding to a homey environment. More...

We arrived in a big group with a reservation, having pre-ordered food. We were hungry and food came quickly: flatbreads, sausages, pretzels. All excellent. If you want a laid back not noisy place, where you can have a conversation, this is the place to go especially if you want to try different beers. Came here previously for brunch which is great.  This time my friends want   I highly recommend you get the brezel (pretzel).  It comes out warm with mustard on the side.  So good. The bar is in the front.  There is a cushion round nook right next to the bar.  There are wooden bench with wooden tables in the back that reminds me of a German biergarden.Non-gender bathrooms are located in the back.  There are about 3 single restrooms.Great place and worth coming back. Love. This. Place. Brezels (pretzels) have, IMHO, the perfect texture and have that buttery salt goodness that doesn't need the apple butter or mustard. Anything with spicy citrus kale on it: seriously all vegetarian options everyone should be this good. Currywurst: YAS. Beer selection: robust, especially for this area. I have liked everything I have tried. Brunch gravy and biscuits: YAS. Service: consistently friendly and professional. Not too fussy. Space: roomy and great for groups. Ambience is VERY casual but can accommodate intimate moments too! I come here a lot and I'm so happy they're in the neighborhood. More...

Being German, I can tell you that this is the real thing. They know how to pour a beer properly, what a Flammkuchen is supposed to taste like and surprisingly, also what a great Italy-class cappuccino is supposed to taste like. You'd be surprised that this is a place that makes an espresso shot with a perfect balance of bitter notes and acids and on top of that also knows how to steam the milk just right to get a perfect creamy texture. If you hit the right bartender, you'll also be surprised with some cute latte art. The owners Tobias and Ayana are sweethearts and whenever I'm in Fort Greene it's a religion to me to enjoy some great food and good old German beer here. More...

Beer:Great German beer selection.  It's hard to find a good selection that isn't the same old same old.  They DO have traditional selections but also go above and beyond to find unique German beers. Food:Pretzel was great.  I loved that it wasn't the giant pretzel a lot of places have but was a "normal" size.  Had the pork schnitzel and spaetzle both were very good.  I could hear them "tenderizing" the meat in the back.  Sounded like they gave it a good workout.  I also like that they gave me a big glass of water as soon as I sat down.  I'll be back. Recently move to NY, and being originally from Germany, I had to try all the German restaurants in the city. Black Forest Brooklyn, has 100% authentic German food. The schnitzel is literally better than any schnitzel I've had living my entire life in Germany. It is SO good. The Currywurst is also great, and so are the pretzels as well as the Spätzle. Stopped in for lunch on a weekday afternoon. Not busy at all. The dining area was spacious. I can see how it may get crowded with elevated volume. I enjoyed the music being played and the staff was courteous. The menu looked okay.  As an extremely selective eater, I didn't try the more traditional menu items. I enjoyed my humungous fish sandwich, sides, and fries.  The very mini ice cream cup was a nice treat at the end. I'd go back for lunch in the future, but not sure if I'd be willing to go when it's more packed, or if I'm in a crunch for time. Service was good but a bit slow. More...

My friend and I stopped in recently--didn't check out any of the eats there, but they had a really extensive menu of all types of German food. There were also a number of seating options--with stools along the window to look outside, and a number of private & communal tables. On a busy Saturday night, it seemed like there were still a few seats to be snagged, which is always good. (It is true that space is the true commodity in this city...). More...

Pricey but legit. My German friend wants to move to Cobble Hill because of this place. He told me that the beer tastes like home, but the price reminds him of what it takes to survive in NYC. It's got a hipster vibe, a somewhat spacious back area with a big overhead for your football or whatever show. It has legit food like Black Forest Cherry Gateau which has been branded as True German food (by the same friend). More cherry would have made it better and the portion for $9 should be larger, in my non-german opinion. It had the weisswurst ($16) and my friend had wurstkorb with Freiburg taste ($12). My drink Weihenstephan hefe dunkel ($8) was good - fruity and light. Radeberger pilsner ($7) has been deemed real German beer and my friend says you can't go wrong with it. It tastes like home, he says. You can choose between .5L and 1L .Sauerkraut is fine but is slightly sweeter than what he's used to. Pretzel is good, but it didn't come with butter. Kaiser bun with wurstkorb is worth remember because he was amazed at its flavor and wondered if it was imported because it tasted like home. The weisswurst came in some sort of a broth. Remember to peel off the casing when you're eating the wursts! Has wifi.Nice but slow service. Quite dim.tasty food. More...

Black Forest is a spacious beer garden in Cobble Hill. It feels new and clean, with rustic wooden interior. I went with my brother for a drink on a Saturday night around 11. It was quiet and we could actually hear each other talk. We got the special Black Forest Beer in the steins and it was pretty tasty. The bartender was nice and brought the beer around the bar to our two top table. It seems they have a good brunch crowd, and great Oktoberfest events - will have to go back! More...

Black Forest still has it going on. Yes, it is very very similar to the place up on Fulton street, but that is 100% OK in my book, as I really loved living close to the OG location. They have virtually the same beer (save maybe one draught that is only available at the other store), and the same menu. The layout is similar as well, with bench style seating and a decently sized bar. They are super kid friendly which is nice for anyone who has kids or friends with kid, but still wants a 1/2 liter of German goodness. I personally go with a dunkle or kellerbier, unless I am in the mood for some night night juice, then that calls for the Aventinus (a liter of that is seriously dangerous). As for the food, the schnitzel looked legit (will def try next time), the sausage platter lets you chose your own four (go with the cheese brat), comes with a few sides, and is great for sharing, and the giant pretzel is...well a giant pretzel (also very good for sharing)Come here with friends, have a few liters of beer, and a large pretzel, you're guaranteed to have a good time. One of my go to places in this area!I really love the curry wurst with the chicken sausage! The chicken schnitzel is also one really good! It's a really large piece that could even be shared with another person. Im not a huge fan of potato salad but I actually like the one from here! It has a slight mustard taste but is mostly citrusy and refreshing! To wash it all down go a for the half litter or FULL liter beers (a little pricy but probs equals the same as a couple of beers at an nyc bar.) One of my favorite spots in downtown Brooklyn. Never too hard to snag a table and the menu is perfectly priced. I usually order a flat bread/pizza like item which is more than enough food for one person and can probably be shared along with an app if you are a group of two. This is also a perfect brunch spot and you wont have to spend 45 minutes waiting for a table on a Saturday afternoon. Black Forest. Wow. Brings me back to Berlin. I ordered the schnitzel w/ Kale and Sour Kraut and a currywurst with the string fries. Both were delicious. My schnitzel was pork tenderloin. Perfectly golden crisp, with a delicious bite to it. The currywurst was not traditional in that there was no curry ketchup, instead, it was served in a grey bowl with a curry sauce.I also tried the huge pretzel, warm, salty, and it came with two mustards: savory and sweet.I highly recommend ordering my personal favorite, the Schoffer Hoffer Grapefruit beer. So i will start with the bad, get that out of the way and then go into the good. Their potato latkes are TERRIBLE. Stay away from those and the rest of your meal should be quite enjoyable! The place is super cute inside very woodsy and clean. The food (other than the above referenced latkes)is very tasty! We had a bunch of wursts and pretzel and craut combos. My husband had the beer which he said was fantastic (i had a bellini yes i know i know but i dont like beer what can i say). Probably the best part is three wurst dishes, the awful latkes, and two drinks with tax and tip was like $65 which is insanely cheap for this hood! Came here for food and a few drinks on a rainy Saturday night a few weeks ago with the husband.Really enjoyed the food - was simple but good. I had the pork Schnitzel with spicy kale salad and spatzel, husband had the Weisswurst and said it was also good.Service was mediocre. Our food came out promptly, but we only ever saw our server to take our order and to drop the check, which he did while we were in the middle of eating. Totally understanding of waiters wanting to close out, but he did this shortly after we received food without even asking how it was. Meanwhile he still had a large group at a communal table that was there for another 30 minutes, so just seemed really unnecessary and a bit rude?Seems like a good spot for groups with large tables as well. My husband and I came here for brunch on a Saturday morning while visiting Brooklyn for a wedding. We tried Cafe Luluc first, which is obviously popular and better known, but ultimately decided to give this place a try, even though it was completely empty when we arrived. The decor is all clean, European lines, with bar stools straight out of IKEA, but the reclaimed wood of the window booths and exposed brick in the dining area give it some rustic interest and keep the place from feeling too sterile. It's open and airy, with displays of flowers that give a welcoming feel.We started with coffee, which was very good, and locally roasted in Dumbo. One look at the menu assured us that we were in the right place - my husband the bratwurst gravy and biscuits, and I got the rolled omelette with smoked salmon, caramelized onions, and goat cheese. My meal also came with a delicious side salad, with the perfect mustardy vinaigrette to accompany it, rosemary roasted potatoes, and a giant piece of rye bread with some kind of berry jam that I didn't get the name of, but it was tart and delicious. At first, I was peeved there was no butter, but the jam was so flavorful and tart, that butter would have been a dulling accompaniment. I think this place is definitely worth a try, if you don't mind a "less happening" atmosphere. Also, looks like it would be fun for dinner or drinks, as they have an extensive beer menu. More...

Stopped in Saturday evening, plenty of space and quickly seated. (party of three - including a 3 year-old.)We started with the smaller ($4) pretzel. Tasty - good mustards. Then we ordered two Wurstkorb - one with the traditional style sausage, and the other with the spicy cheese inside. (These are not listed on the website, so unfortunately, I am unable to properly name them. We also had a side of spatzle. And I had a .5L Hofbrau Dunkel (super yum). Both sausages were excellent, the fries were more than plentiful and delicious, the sauerkraut fantastic (a serious stand out to me), and the kaiser roll was very good. Also, the spatzle was quite tasty - sometimes I find them too dry. This one comes with a jus of some sort with mushrooms. My daughter thought called it mac and cheese, but also enjoyed the jus. I think we would try subbing a side  (if possible) in for one of the fries in the future because we just couldn't eat them all.The only slight negative was the service, but for me, not enough to take a star away. Many groups were drinking (the whole group), so if we were all drinking, I think we would not have minded it being a little slow. Also, the server was friendly and quick to help, but needed to be called - no checking in. Again, not terrible to me, but something to be aware of in case that would bother you. Either way, we will definitely be coming back and look forward to trying more of the menu. More...

Always satisfied when I go to either of Black Forest's locations....

E
26 April 2018

If there's 2 things I do poorly when sober, it's making low stakes decisions and understanding the metric system. That's what makes Black Forest so dangerous for me - a huge selection of beers all in liter measurements. Trying to do the mental math of how many pint glasses are in a liter (for the record, it's 2.11 pints), I decided to go big and have my beer in the biggest size they had - the boot! Thankfully for my liver, they had no more boots available, so I settled for a liter. With the sizing questions out of the way, I had to make an even harder choice - which type of suds to get. Unlike some bars, Black Forest doesn't offer Bud Light or Corona on tap - only authentic German beers here! With a flavorful Radeberger pilsner I sat down with some friends, and dug into one of the biggest pretzels I had ever seen. Overall table service is a bit spotty - servers will show up right as you sit down, expecting you to know what you want, then disappear for what seems like hours once you've made your decision. This place lives up to the Black Forest name. The food is almost dead on, like you were back in Germany. I got the Jagerschnitzel and it came with spatzle and mushroom gravy. I originally meant to go to some cafe to meet a friend but came across the Black Forest. I peered into the window, saw that it wasn't crowded, and decided to switch locations. For a Friday afternoon, the vibe was pretty laid-back. Visitors ranged from solo ppl on their laptops to families with babies. Wooden benches and tables are your  furniture arrangements with a bar by the door. I ordered a latte and a hot chocolate. My friend had soup and the flourless Chocolate cake, which I had the pleasure of tasting. Overall, I was pretty satisfied. More...

Friend remember this place after our first place for brunch didn't work out.  Good thing too! This place was almost empty and worked out for a big group with a toddler.  We had our own little corner away from others so we wouldn't be too much of a disturbance to other patrons. The restaurant has hooks on the walls to hang bags or coats which is a nice touch.  Wooden tables and benches...very casual and laid back.Without a doubt, you need to order a Reisenbrezel, giant warm pretzel with German mustard.  The food came pretty quick after we placed our order.  Brunch is a good size plate.  Got the black forest benedikt (2 poached eggs, black forest ham, homemade butter biscuits with a side salad).  It was pretty good.  The German breakfast looks good (and it comes with a brezel - warm pretzel)...have to try next time.  The waitress checked on us from time to time and refilled the coffee cups that we're empty.  Great service. There is a bar in the front if you want a drink. There are 5 non-gender restrooms.  One was a bit wet so went to another one which was cleaner.Nice place, have to try other stuff next time. I feel like there are more and more German beer halls in Brooklyn every year, but Black Forest aims for more of a polished, sitdown vibe (though they do have the traditional picnic tables in the back room). Sat at the bar so service was quick. Didn't have any of their food, but they have a ton of options and they're all reasonably priced, for the most part.I had the Rothaus Tannenzapfle beer (which Black Forest says they're the first US restaurant to serve). Very German tasting, for better or for worst. Crushable, light, not great.Lots of other beer options, as well as cocktails and whiskeys (including the Aventinus whiskey beer). Cocktails are also relatively inexpensive. No word on when they'll have the backyard open yet, but hopefully in time for this summer! More...

This was an excellent "point n pick" spot in a very trendy Ft. Greene neighborhood. While waiting for a colleague I had a very cozy hot chocolate while listening to an eclectic blue eyed soul, funk, and R & B playlist. The vibe is light and it proved to be a perfect Sunday brunch experience. The menu is hearty and cultured. I would have pics but it was so good I ate it. I had the sausage biscuits and gravy. Yum!  There is also a boozy brunch option. The service was attentive. This is a great spot for a day date, meeting chums, or self care alone time. More...

Where to start...I was excited to see this place open up on Smith Street, because there's a constant rotation of businesses here. Also it was something different for a change, as in, not a Thai or "American" spot with nothing worth paying for. Cynicism aside, I'm glad they're here.To the place itself, it's got a unique layout due to the combination of awkwardly places benches or tables. Not sure if it's intended to look like a beer hall or a restaurant, which I guess is fine because it can accommodate both big parties and small. The food here has been great, I've enjoyed everything so far - which has consisted of 3 different sausages. They were great and came with a massive amount of fries. Would have preferred bigger sausages (heyoooo) and less fries, but I'm ok with the portions - they're fair for the price. Pretzels are awesome. Two mustard types, also a huge plus.Beer selection is great, lots of German/Bavarian beer to choose from. 3 size options as well - I think they were .5L,1L and a Boot for those of you looking to sleep under the table.Service is my one real negative point, it's slooooww. As in really damn slow. Some other reviews bring it up, so I don't want to drag on with it, but it's definitely in need of improvement. The second time here we waited about 15-20 minutes just to get a menu, was almost ready to walk out.Anyway, with my one negate complaint aside, it's definitely worth checking this place out, especially if you're in the mood for German sausage and beer. I love beer and I love yummy food. I dislike small crowded spaces and loud music that forces me to scream at my friends. It doesn't take much to please me and Black Forest Brooklyn is an establishment I fully support as a local and a foodie.Black Forest Brooklyn introduced me to German food, and I will forever be grateful for this place! Spaetzel, schnitzels, warm toasty pretzels with OG mustard dipping sauce- I could come here just for these and be so happy! I also very much enjoyed the bratwurst gravy and biscuit on their brunch menu. Their house salad is colorful and the light touch of vinaigrette makes it so refreshing to pair with fried foods! The menu has a large selection of food and drinks but that is not something I am complaining about because I cannot wait to come back to try all their goodies! The first time I came here I shared the beer flight with my best friend because we both had no preference (and no idea whats what lol) for German beers. This was a perfect introduction to 13 beers, each with their own distinct flavor. Now I opt for half a liter of my beer of choice so I can sit, relax, and eat like the queen I dream to be. More...

13 February 2018

I honestly can't believe why more people aren't giving this place 5 stars. Unlike the crowded beer gardens like the Standard, which are usually frequented by the same loud groups of people, Black Forest offers a chill atmosphere for the neighborhood crowd. You can always depend on finding seats even on a Friday night.Their wooden table group seating arrangement is pretty much a beer garden classic. But they also have high top or normal tables for those coming in groups of 2 and not feeling like mingling with strangers. Music plays in the background, but not so much that it would disrupt your conversation. The servers are helpful and attentive, offering recommendations and coming toward you immediately at a time of your dire need of refills. Now the food. I would have loved to try their Schnitzel, but I felt somewhat uncomfortable paying $18 for a schnitzel at a place I've never tried the meals of. So, we went with the Bratwurst ($10) served with sauerkraut and shoestring fries and the Black Forest Burger ($14) with shoestring fries. Needless to say, we had enough fries that day. Their servings were generous and meals were delicious. Whatever German butcher they are using for their sausages and grass-fed burgers is none of my business, but please keep using them. The burger gets a special shout-out. Pretzel buns are becoming a commodity for burgers nowadays, so I won't rave about that, but their use of ham, emmentaler cheese and caramelized onions made that burger an amalgamation of greatness. The bratwurst was also an amazing dinner considering the price and how their spicy mustard works so well with their sausages. Shoestring fries were McDonalds friesesque, which means they were salted, thinly cut, and amazing. I ate them until my mouth felt numb from the sodium content, which I later fixed by drinking a liter of their Hofbräu original. All of their Hofbräus are great options, but go for the Hofbräu Oktoberfest if you are looking to get buzzed sooner. More...

First time at their new location and they didn't disappoint! We shared the sausage platter which came with four different kinds that varied in taste and texture. The sweet mustard complimented the platter nicely! We also ordered the "Flamnkuchen" which is basically a thin crust pizza. To our surprise, we wanted more and more of this German twist on flatbread. We opted for the "original" with a combination of sour cream, smoked bacon and caramelized onion!!   The only improvement I would like to see during my next visit is a fresh Latke. I'm not saying they weren't good but  they weren't crisp. I'm guessing they sat out for a bit before they were brought to our table. Do you like beer, sausages, giant pretzels, and other German specialties? Do you live in Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, or Boerum Hill, and are much too lazy to walk over to Fort Greene on a regular basis? Yes?*Well, you're in luck, because Black Forest has come to Smith Street. The service is still getting their act together, but they are new, so cut them some slack. And otherwise, it's pretty much the same as the original (and many other German beer halls you've been to). They have tasty sausages like the käsebratwurst, served in kaiser rolls with shoestring (think McDonald's in a good way) fries and sauerkraut. They have potato pancakes, spaetzle, giant pretzels, jerk wings (for some odd reason), flammkuchens (flatbreads), schnitzels, and more. All these things are tasty, and I recommend you order one of each per person. And they have delicious German beers available by the half liter, liter, and boot. If you drink enough strong beer, it doesn't really matter what you ordered anyway, but then you have a shot at finishing all that food you ordered. (A little excessive, if you ask me.)One thing I would NOT recommend doing is ordering liquor. You're in a beer hall, and even if you weren't, they are inexplicably charging $14 for a Tito's and soda,** which is only barely acceptable if you're on a rooftop in Manhattan. ______________*Wait, are you me? You sound like me, but you're clearly so much better looking.**My wife is basic AF. Then again, so am I. More...

a German restaurant that isn't overly kitschy or "just another beer hall" is hard to find these days. luckily, Black Forest has you covered. pretty solid brunch menu with some interesting spins on standards: Black Forest ham eggs benedict, schnitzel with eggs, and more. I ultimately picked the German breakfast, an impressive platter of charcuterie, cheese, mixed fruits, boiled egg, croissant, and pretzel, as well as a variety of spreads and preserves. a certain someone wanted a pretzel, but we were both a little let down by the pretzel, though she enjoyed her custom omelet and German-style home fries.solid beer list and service was good. pretty fairly priced, and there was no huge rush to get people in and out. good way to fuel up on a chilly day! This place came highly recommended, so decided to check it out before a concert at the Barclays center. Sat at the bar and looked through the beer selections. Pretty mixed options, but I'm more of an IPA drinker than German beer. Gave the original a try, the smallest option they had was still a big portion. The menu is awesome. The different types of meats and German options make this place feel totally authentic. We decided on the potato latkes and the spicy pork served with French fries. The place was packed, but we didn't wait long at all for the food. They give you a mix of sauces from plain ketchup to different mustards. I love brunch.I love German food.I love beer. Black Forest Brooklyn has all of the above. I rallied up some peeps to try out their brunch last Saturday. I was not disappointed. Actually, I already know that I need to go back. There are items I missed that looked mouth watering like the over sized pretzel!! And some of the crafty beers. For an additional $19 you can get UNLIMITED drinks (mimosa, beermosa and Bloody Mary's) for 2 hours. I was on aunt duty after brunch so I stuck to the one beermosa. The beer actually cut back on the acidity of the orange juice. It was a great breakfast boozy brunch beverage. On the food menu, I was drawn to the rolled omelettes. You get to pick three ingredients, it comes with salad and potatoes. I had to have kale, goat cheese and smoked salmon. When the food arrived the potatoes were cooked just right. The salad was well seasoned and actually had flavor. Normally the side salads are left behind because of their boring existence. On the table there was a collection of mustards and ketchups. Even the the Berlin fave condiment Curry Ketchup was in the basket. There was a lack of hot sauces. And what they brought when you asked was a tiny bowl of some sort of chili paste. Spicy-madness! This place is located in Fort Greene. We had to move our chair a couple times to let some strollers through. I like that the restaurant has a variety of seating. There's the intimate window catching up sofas, the anti social bar, the small intimate four tops and the rager large tables. There's also cute German decor like a collection of cuckoo clocks. Adorable spot for brunch and the food is a nice change of pace. And a great neighborhood to walk around and work off the feast.I will return for the German breakfast, spaetzle, potato latkes and apple sauce. Lecker! I can't wait. More...

Early brunch with the pork Schnitzel and my partner had poached eggs. The kale salad that accompanied both was fresh and the dressing was bright. The schnitzel was really tender and larger than expected though the two eggs were poached hard rather than medium. Just a simple kitchen error as my partner's were perfectly poached. I'd have preferred spaetzel rather than the fries but no substitutions are permitted. The serving staff were really pleasant and efficient. The decor was a fun blend without trying excessively for a Bavarian beerhall look. Will return again. Enjoy! More...

I'm always on the look out for a nice place to eat and have a beer or two. Then I found this hidden gem. I've driven past Black Forest Brooklyn many times and decided to stop in and check it out. We were greeted promptly by the staff and told to sit where ever we liked. We chose our table and our server Kevin B came right over and gave us the menu and took our drink order. As I took in the atmosphere which was awesome our drinks arrived. The Hofbrau beer was ice cold and the .5L mug was really cool. Within a few minutes our orders of Bratwurst arrived and it was the best I've had in years. It gave me a flashback of my time in service when I was a soldier in Germany and brought back great memories. As we enjoyed our meal I also noticed the background music was also what I like to listen to. It was just at the right volume level where you could listen to it and still carry on a conversation. Kevin came back several times to make sure everything was ok and refilled our drinks, of which I was very eager to consume. There was a nice crowd but not overly crowded for a Friday night. It was overall a great experience and I will revisit Black Forest Brooklyn to try out the Jagerschnitzel and have some Jägermeister shots and of course some more beer. The only thing I would like to see is the staff learn a few words in German. The mashed potatoes were some of the best I've ever had. Even the side salads were delicious. 15 February 2017

I don't understand how Black Forest only has 3.5 stars to its name. My experience here was fantastic. This is coming from someone who walked in starving, tired and cranky. It's dangerous when I'm in the majority of HALT (Hungry Angry Lonely Tired). I'm not the nicest of people in that case. But Black Forest turned everything around for me pretty quickly. The food and beverages were solid at the very least, the service was superb considering how busy the place was, and everything was AFFORDABLE. That's a pretty hard combination to find here, folks. We found ourselves at Black Forest thanks to my aunt, who's a loyal patron of BAM. She informed me that though there are many fine eateries around the theater, Black Forest was her go-to. Though I prefer to do more research before going out to eat somewhere, I decided to live a little. And yes, that's what risk-taking looks like in my life. The space itself is warm and celebratory. Though I prefer Belgian beer to German beer, I adore German beer halls. The vibe is just so merry and carefree and that's a vibe we could all use more of in our lives. Plenty of different seating options here--high top tables, normal dining tables, bar seating, communal seating. Because we came here straight from a BAM show (at around 9:45) we were, well, not the only people who had the idea to come here, post-BAM. By this I mean that our only seating option was a communal table, which ended up a lot nicer than expected. I'm always down for bonding with fellow diners, but that excitement is often met with odd looks and suspicion. Here, we got to witness a party of five take a communal shot off of a ski, which was a treat. I didn't even take the shot and I was buzzed from that. Don't worry, we did try out some alcohol here. I planned to go with beer, through and through, given that this is a German beer spot. But I took one look at the cocktail menu here and knew I might need to reconsider. For starters, I'm pretty sure most of the spirits they use here are German. It's one thing to carry exclusively German beers, but it's far less common to see a full bar of German liquor. Serious props there. I ended up going for the Williams Sour (Schladerer Williams pear brandy, Van Brunt moonshine whiskey, lemon juice), which was fantastic. I felt like they kind of skimped on the total amount of liquid (it was maybe three sips, max), but overall, I was happy. And though it's always better to stick to one type of alcohol for the night, I just had to get a beer for my second drink. You can't not at a place like this. I ended up going with an Andechs Dopplebock Dunkel, which was fabulous. One of the best dopplebocks I've ever had. Food-wise, Black Forest has great options, great portions, and great prices. I think "great" would be the only word sophisticated enough to describe all of that. Any type of German food you could possibly want, all with German/English menu translations. I don't know that much about German food, but this is up there with some of the best I've had. Seems pretty authentic to me. I tend to not eat heavy food (gym rat, so sue me) so I don't tend to go for sausages or schnitzel on the reg, but Black Forest actually offers a pretty healthy menu. Organic, grass-fed beef AND vegan options. It's rare to find a German restaurant that serves a vegan sausage option as well as a cheese substitute. Our eats, below:Bauernmadchen Flammkuchen (flatbread): (sour cream--we subbed for the vegan citrus cauliflower spread--spicy citrus shredded kale, roasted pumpkins, cauliflower, roasted almonds) - A+Oh man, this was unbelievable. I didn't realize the Germans had a traditional flatbread that they serve. Add in the fact that Black Forest offers gluten free crust and vegan spread and I'm on cloud 9. Pretty fantastic combo--unusual toppings but a nice change of pace from your typical flatbreads. Fresh, varied, healthy and earthy. Must-order. Wurstkorb (choice of sausage w/ warm kaiser bun, shoestring fries, sauerkraut) w/ Geflugel Bratwurst (hardwood-smoked chicken sausage): AHooray for chicken bratwurst! What I treat to find this on the menu. Very flavorful, just wish there was more. Next time I should just through caution to the wind and get a four-sausage sampler. One issue--I realized after the fact that we didn't receive shoestring fries. Whatever we did receive was meh. But hey, at least the kraut was good! Love my kraut. One Weisswurt sausage (Bavarian pork and veal): A-It didn't blow my mind, but for a simple single sausage, still pretty tasty. Now there's some kind of innuendo. Anyway, glad we opted to try a second type of sausage--particularly one that's in the arena of authentic German cuisine (as opposed to a vegan sausage, which would be very far from it). I tend not to eat red meat but I'd still say it was a worthy diversion from my normal diet. And for just 5 bucks, really can't complain. More...

SUPER DUPER IMPORTANT YELP UPDATE: THEY HAVE AVENTIUS!!!! Also the schnitzel and food's improved. yay! OLDE REVIEW: When I think German, I don't think Oaxaca, but that's exactly whats on the "menu" at this "German" restaurant. Look, at the end of the day the food is Americanized German, distilled for the american palate, their mashed potatoes come out of a box, they don't mash them, their "German" salads are more akin to something you'd get at a chain than something authentic, and the beer selection really does leave quite a bit to be desired, as they mostly have common faire. I guess it makes sense if you're catering to an audience that isn't familiar with German food or beer, and that's fine. The decor is nice, but I reckon if you're eating at a place for the decor, well then... At the end of the day, I live in the hood, and will make the trek to Cafe Katja in the LES, or ideally Zum Schneider (Alphabet City) for MUCH MUCH better German food (even though Katja is Austrian), or if I just want a good German Beer, DSK up the street offers a much better selection. Though both DSK and Black Forest would do good to get their hands on some Aventinus. More...

Oh holy moly the food here is good! I'm of German descent and I can tell you that this is some outstanding German food. The pretzel was perfection. The beet salad was HUGE and what I would expect to get in a contemporary restaurant in Germany, but the pork Schnitzel was beyond good and very traditional. Probably the best I've ever had and that's quite a lot. You get 2 sides with the Schnitzel and I got the potato salad (German style natch) and sauerkraut. The potato salad was nice and cold and the sauerkraut was piping hot. I saved my mustard from the pretzel so I could layer sauerkraut on the pork and dab mustard on the top. What a great and super filing dinner. I could've eaten half of everything and still been full. However, I was a good girl and cleaned my plate and they had to roll me out the door. Such a shame because I was really looking forward to trying the traditional Black Forest cake, which I assume would've been just as great as everything else. Next time. Next time. More...

Black Forest is a great bar, my friend lives really close to so I've been here about 3 times before this last time and each time I only had drinks, this time I had food also celebrating that friend's birthday, ambiance is really nice there is a bar area but there are also dining tables and there are a few picnic style tables similar to Oktoberfest, there is a good selection of German beers and German food as well, they have hofbrau and many others, they have . 5 liters, 1 liters and boots as well, they also have wine and cocktails, last time I went for a hot toddy since it was cold out and it was great but in this place you just want to have a beer, as far as food I was torn looking at the menu there were many things I wanted to try but I ended up having a bratwurst which comes with fries (no salt! Awesome) and sauerkraut, a good portion and perfect with beer, like I said earlier I had been here before but since the last time I visited Germany and I must say this place captured the experience well! If I'm in the area for a game I will definitely stop by More...

First time there for election night, which was obviously super busy, so service wasn't great. However, bad service is a hallmark of German restaurants, so one cannot complain about an inauthentic experience. Food was pretty authentic too (I am German btw). Awesome decor. Love the reclaimed wood tables and community style seating. Hipsters abound but the wurst, spaetzle and kale apple salad are all very legit making the mustache wax and baby bjorn toting hipster tools bearable. Decent lunchtime service. Great German restaurant with a warm rustic vibe inside, outside tables, friendly service and fantastic German food.My son and I were in the area for an appointment,  first time in this area. ..  The outside tables were inviting, and my son was game for sausages.Nothing disappointed and we would definitely return. Ambiance. We sat outside which was great for people watching, and the rustic inside was comfortable looking too, longer wood tables making it more conducive for groups of friends.Service.  Server was extremely friendly, great with suggestions on food and beer, and helpful giving us input about the neighborhood and subways, taxis. Beer.  The dark, black German beer was fantastic.Food.  We both loved the spätzle with gravy side.  Must have and reminded me of a grandma making it from scratch as she piece by piece dropped the dough type mix into a pot of hot water . Checked this place out with some friends for a Sunday Brunch. First, cool ambiance with both individual tables and the traditional beer hall benches. Awesome exposed brick walls with skylights showcasing their roof garden. The environment is chill and bright - it's the kind of place you will want to linger all day. Food is delicious! I got the black forest bededikt with salmon (other choices are kale and ham) for $14. It was also served with a small side salad. Very filling and tasty benedict as the benedict itself was served on hearty biscuits. Smoked salmon was well cooked as were the eggs. Overall, good flavor.  I was absolutely stuffed though I did eat every less morsel of my dish.  My fiancee got the egg over schnitzel ($16) which came with fries and a side salad. I had a taste of the schnitzel and it was a really good bite.  My friends got the gravy over biscuits and the scrambled eggs respectively - both looked like good dishes and very filling.  For $2.50, the coffee was a big cup which was nice.My only compliant was the service as it took FOREVER to get our coffees (which then came out one at a time). After our dishes were served, it was hard to find any waitstaff for water refill or anything else.  All in all - a good meal and great bier garden environment! More...

Pretty good, and to be honest they would have gotten a five star had they not had an issues and not been able to serve beer. That is kind of bad for a beer garden. I hate to penalize for that, but it did take away from the atmosphere and the fun we were having there. The food was great, though. The service was equally great. The flatbread was really good and my dude was excited because he's ethnically German and loves having tasty food that reminds him of his time there. Great beer selection and friendly service. What made the night was that by chance it was the 500 year anniversary of the German brewing purity law and they tapped a keg of delicious beer and gave us all a free glass (with glass as souvenir) and held a beer holding contest which was hilarious-it really got everyone in the place laughing and talking! Opentable res for 12 made with my card and all. Upon arrival, we were "reserved" the horseshoe area by the window, but we picked a bench by the wall instead. We came to eat AND drink. Luckily it was a windy Monday night. The waiter immediately greeted us with carafes of water and (votive) glasses?  Ordering happens on a tablet which was pretty spot on for us. We started with some pretzels which were just ok to me but the two different mustards (spicy and not) were unique.  The beer battered mushrooms with aioli - get them!  The flatbread, although they only had gluten free dough, none of us could tell the diff. The mushroom and vegetarian ones are both delish!  Got the spätzle (pasta) without bacon which prob made it a little less flavorful but the texture was still comforting as always. My buddy was in Germany and he saw a program on TV about German food in America. And Black Forest was one of the places that they discussed and now he wanted to go. So we did.And the food, it's decent. The Flammkuchen is basically German pizza. Flatbread, cut into pieces and easily share-able. The one we got had salmon and dill. It was pretty good. Would order again. The goulash w/ Spaetzel was kind of lacking. I don't know if they par-cook the spaetzel or what, but it wasn't great. I also personally prefer them in smaller pieces, these were kind of like noodles. The meat in the goulash was on the tough side, but on the other hand, the sauce was pretty good. I had a bite of the fish schnitzel too, and it was pretty mediocre. The beer list is good though. They do a barrel-aged old fashioned that was delicious if a bit sweet. And the beer that they have that's a cross between an American style IPA and a German beer was really good.So maybe this is a place for drinks and snacks. I'd go back for that. More...

Shocked this place doesn't have higher reviews. Fantastic food with huge portions - I've been for brunch and dinner several times. This is a local go-to for me, and I've brought out of town friends here and they all love it. Great for both big and small groups, any time of day. Dressing on house salad is delicious, and shoe string fries are not too salty or greasy.Wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.Wait staff can sometimes be a little cold, though. I've been a few times and have seen 3 waiters - one was fantastic the one time I saw him, one who I've had a few times was a bit cold one time but very friendly the other, and the other was cold the one time I saw him.Wait time for food is decent - not too slow, not too fast. Outstanding genuine German cuisine. I grew up in a 100% German household so I know German food and this place blows away most "German " restaurants I have eaten in. And in the middle of Brooklyn to boot!!  Highly recommended! More...

Another good German addition in the area. Superb selection of beers on tap, as well as food options.Few evenings ago I had drinks and bites with some friends and we had a blast! It was a Friday evening and our server was quick, responsive, and really nice.Beers are a bit expensive ($8-10), but food is relatively cheap. We shared a delicious wiener schnitzel with fries, and fried mushroom. More...

I came here for brunch on a Sunday. It was crowded, but not obnoxiously so, and it's a big enough space to where you don't feel like you're sitting on top of each other. I was very comfortable there. Food and drinks were satisfying (I had schnitzel - it was really good, but nothing to write home about). The waitstaff was super nice and attentive. I LOVE the fact they're paperless! From both a staff and patron standpoint it makes things so much easier. More...

I was really, really excited to find this place. Seriously, I went back like 3 times in a week. I love coming here because its big and fun and family friendly and more importantly for yelp community-- the food is simple and delicious. From what I have read on the beer list, the drink selection is awesome too, I just can't stop ordering the same Tannenzapfle. More...

Came here for a friend's birthday. Had a group of 12 people, had to wait for about 20 minutes which isn't bad for a Friday night. We all ordered from the bar, I went for the Rothaus. Being a fan of nonpasteurized beer, I was hoping it lived up to the hype and standard of other beers in the same category. It did, it was so good I grabbed another 2 liter steins throughout the night. Had the kasebratwurst, though the portion seemed small, I highly recommend it. I'll definitely be back for sure. Host and waiter were both friendly and attentive. More...

I was out on a date with a friend and we were looking for a place to eat before going into BAM. Black Forest was the perfect spot, a few blocks away from the theater. My friend was looking for a good place to have a beer and I have to say they have a large selection. Pilsner beer was the choice of the night it was lite and has a very good flavor. I had the Jagerschnitzel Mit Spatzle, it is a breaded veal cutlet with homemade German egg noodle and wild mushroom gravy. It had a very good taste. The portion was big I could not finish it all. The prices are reasonable. The place was very busy. We waited for a waiter but thereafter the food was served right away. More...

We were here with friends on 6/12/2014. We had a fantastic time :) Great food, wonderful German beer, amazing live music and lovely hosts. The atmosphere was a perfect mix of relaxed/friendly/fun. We just wish that we lived in Brooklyn so that it could be our local bar. More...

Great selection of beer in different sizes to cater to lightweights and lushes alike. The food isn't anything to gush over but it's pretty solid all around. Seems like a good place for large groups but I've also come here alone to read a book or work on my laptop for a couple hours. The staff never try to rush you to vacate the table and are always friendly and accommodating without being overbearing. I will definitely keep coming back. More...

Friendly service, nice beer selection, the sausage sampler was nicely cooked & prepared. Awesome fantabulous sauerkraut. I was thrilled to try the battered mushrooms, but they were really soggy. Maybe the oil wasn't hot enough? Overall. had a great time & look forward to going back & trying those mushrooms again - must have been a one-off because everything else was lovely. :) More...

I have no idea why this place has such low ratings. The service is super nice, the beers are great, and the food is delicious. I tried my husband's brat and it was very well done. The atmosphere is wonderful and they even have a big projector screen which is currently playing the U.S. Open. More...

Great location as a lot is happening on n this block, and is near BAM. This is a German Biergarten. There are plenty of options on draft, but beware the smallest glass will be half a liter. Very open layout with just the right rustic touch with half the space holding wooden picnic tables standing under two large skylights, and the remainder with newer country 2-3 person square blonde wood tables accompanied by spring green wooden chairs matching in color some wainscoting and fireplace mantle. The same blonde wood creates the tall stools at the bar. Most of the walls are open brick, which is common in BK, yet always appreciated by myself. Likewise to the ubiquitous "Edison" style filament anti-energy-efficient light bulbs. Like any respectable beer place, they readily offer you shot-glass tastes of various beers before commitment to order. I love IPAs, and just because I did not find a similar brew to my current taste did not stop me from this 5 star review. I can appreciate that they have many colorful(and sometimes rare) alcohol options, and I settled on their darkest beer, the Köstritzer Schearzbier which satisfied my thirst thoroughly with its tasty black character. Music was a medium loud of various popular eclectic cool, hip, retro or unusual sounds. I think if they wanted to sing "traditional" German song fare to the local BK ear, no one would have come, and this place would not have been as crowded as it was this Saturday night. Service was friendly. They sell organic German delicacies and apparently coffee and cake, which I cannot comment because I did not partake in those options. More...

There's really only one thing about this place that is 5 stars worthy, but it sure keeps us coming back at least monthly. UNLIMITED mimosas and brewmosas . What us brunch for anyways? We also enjoy the open seating at the picnic tables and the skylight. Good vibes in this place. Usually good for groups, you just have to have someone saving your spot pre-noon rush. Also, there are usually some babies in here (to be expected in the neighborhood) so I'm guessing the families feel it's a child friendly place. We would prefer slightly more attentive drink service, but nothing to complain about. Also, did I mention the unlimited drinks brunch!? The food is ok. Really wish they had something on the menu worth mentioning. Maybe they will add something soon. I'll let you all know, bc I will be back monthly for as long as I live in NY. More...
