Ben photographed our wedding on the 29th of June and he did an absolutely amazing job. My husband and I don't really like having our photo taken at the best of times so we asked for more natural shots rather than really posed (cheesey) shots and we didn't want to spend half the day being told where to go and what to do we wanted the day to flow naturally and to be able to enjoy it with our guests and Ben totally delivered. What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
Where to start - planning, timing, lighting, positioning and a hundred other things need to come together at the right time.
Each shot has to tell part of a story and to do that requires a great deal of skill on the part of the photographer! Photographs, more than anything else, transport a person back to exactly how they were feeling on the day the photograph was taken. So, naturally, if someone feels uncomfortable when the photograph is taken, then it makes for an uncomfortable image - forever! Making the photography session fun, friendly, relaxed and ultimately enjoyable for the people in front of the camera is essential to getting the kind of portraits that everyone enjoys looking at and wants to put on their wall. This is probably my top thing when shooting weddings & portraits.
My second thing when shooting weddings & portraits is to get lighting right, but I'm not going to get all geeky on you. Suffice it to say, that getting the lighting right in camera at the time the photographs are taken is key. It is just one of those things that you can't really fix in post-production, I mean, sure you can make light look better or more dramatic in post production - but that's only possible if you've good good light to work with first!
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
Meeting the client's requirements is essential, and I offer a thorough consultation process prior to the shoot. Questions will depend on the nature of the photography (wedding, corporate etc) and will generally range from what the preferred outdoor locations are, to dates, budget requirements and what style of images are wanted (candid, posed, creative etc).
I'm very flexible and always want to work with the client to get it right. I have no set formula, no rigid rules - it's all about adapting to the client's needs.
What do you love most about your job?
Simple, everything! From working for myself, to capturing special moments, to using cool camera gear. I love the constant creative challenge of always doing something new and different for each client. Then there are the challenges of dealing with all the 'in-the-moment' aspects, like the candid moments, special surprises and the weather! Oh, the weather!
What inspired you to start your own business?
The idea that I could do something special and different was the driving force behind starting up on my own. There is the old cliche of being ones own boss, and whilst that does have a great deal of appeal it's a lot more than that. There is a lot of risk when running your own business, but the rewards are tremendous.
