Awesome class, fantastic trainer, great burn :-) Especially loved the diverse exercises training outdoors! Forget about Barry's and Orange Theory, this is the real deal!

I'm about to finish my second week at Beantown Bootcamp and I'm already hooked. The owner and main instructor (John) knows his stuff and creates thoughtful workout programs that are challenging without being overwhelming regardless of your experience level. I've tried both the indoor and outdoor classes and found them to be a great mix of aerobic and strength training. For me it's a rare combination of an excellent workout and something I actually look forward to doing. You won't dread going to class, but you'll definitely feel and notice the results!Maybe most important for this forum, it's a really welcoming environment to newcomers, I would encourage anyone who is thinking about it to give the 1 week trial a shot. Awesome boot camp class! I started Beantown boot camp four months before my wedding to get in shape. It helped me lose weight and get the results I wanted in time for my wedding! I know every time I go, I will get a really challenging work out whether it be running oriented in the outdoor class or doing tabata like circuits inside. The other members are very athletic and help push me to work harder. John Wayman, the instructor, is fun and helps push us to do our best. He is also very understanding and has refunded me classes I had to cancel last minute. Highly, highly recommend this boot camp! More...

This is the best gym in MA i've tried (and I've tried a lot of gyms). It has all the equipment you need, would it be for fitness, body building and even power lifting. There's enough equipment so you rarely have to wait for a machine or weights to be available. The locker rooms are clean and spacious. The staff is always helpful and friendly when you need them. Some gyms will charge you three times more than this one but won't provide as much as Beantown Bootcamp Personal Training. Karen knows how to manage a gym and it shows! More...

I can't say enough good things about this gym. Their trainers are top notch. The people are nice and it's a great workout. I've been all over Boston to a range of gyms and programs and this place is at the top for me. The only drawback is that the space is a little grungy but the vibe is good. I like the small neighborhood feel. More...

What can I say about Beantown Bootcamp that hasn't already been said? I don't know, but whatever it is keeps me coming back every week! My go-to class is Tread to Shred (also known as Tread Tabata) with Cara. There are 3 stations - cardio, jump rope, and floor - and you cycle through them 3 times each, tabata-style (20 seconds on, 10 seconds off) for a total of 45 minutes. When signing up for the class, you choose either a treadmill or an elliptical/bike for cardio. Cara always mixes up the exercises at the jump rope and floor stations so you never have the same class twice, and alternates between body weight exercises and using free weights so you end up with a fantastic full body workout, blasting all the muscles you didn't even know you had. This class is not easy, but it flies by! I always walk out feeling confident and rejuvenated, albeit on shaky legs. The studio itself...well it's certainly not the fanciest or the most modern or the cleanest. If that's what you're looking for, look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a kickass workout with a fantastic instructor and a convenient location, look no further. Though I wouldn't be disappointed if they replaced the treadmills so I don't feel like it's going to explode underneath me while I crank out high speeds :P More...

If you're an athlete and want to train like one, joining Beantown Bootcamp will accomplish that goal while also allowing you to compete with yourself to enhance your fitness level.  I was at another gym that offered HIIT classes and it was effective but nothing like the balance John has instituted in his program.  John will challenge you physically and mentally which is perfect for the intense training individual as well as someone who wants to get in better shape.  He gives you multiple options for each class with a more challenging version for the intense competitors and a scaled down version for those not quite at that level.  The best part about it is that he wants you to succeed so he offers the scaled version and encourages people to get this down before moving on to the next level.  The boot camps take you to all parts of the city: Beacon Hill, Boston Common, Charlestown and the North End so you could be in a different area 3-4 times a week.  He has taken me to parts of the city that I've never been only to make me run stairs, do sprints or even just stop to do a quick tabata round.  He has a variety of different workouts and is not the same thing over and over again.  He may do the same workout 3-4 weeks later but it is designed to beat your time from the previous workout which brings out the true competitor in you.  He also has a Strength/Weight program that he designs specifically for your fitness level.  This aspect has really developed me into a more fine-tuned athlete and has allowed me to do all exercises with perfect form.  This is completed three times a week, one with John and two others on your own.  This challenges you to complete this in addition to other classes he offers.  In 7 straight weeks I have developed more strength than I would on my own lifting program.  The only problem I have with John and Beantown Bootcamp is that I didn't find out about it sooner, it is that good and doesn't disappoint. I have been to a A LOT of gyms in Boston, but I can say without a doubt that Beantown Bootcamp is my favorite. I stumbled across this gem from a ClassPass membership and quickly knew it was where I wanted to stay. I was sick of bouncing around trendy-licious gyms that are all flash & no substance, and Beantown Bootcamp gave me exactly what I was looking for. This gym has a community of seriously incredible athletes that push you to be better & have a good time doing it. From the traditional classes to intensive small group classes, I always leave this gym sweating more than I thought humanly possible & with a huge smile on my face. Worth every penny. More...

Beantown Bootcamp offers a great workout with energetic and enthusiastic instructors. I have never attended an outdoor class (running and strength exercises) but I attend Cardio X every now and again. Cardio X has a series of stations (Some strength, and some cardio, contrary to name) that each person performs on their own for a certain amount of time. It offers different exercises while remaining with a fairly consistant structure. Despite everyone doing their own thing at one time, there remains a great team spirit in the room. Instructors are encouraging and patient in correcting form. I am impressed with their ability to remember names and ability levels. Although Beantown Bootcamp might not be anything too fancy from the outside, the workout and instructors make it worth attending. More...

After spending a lot of time indoors lifting it was amazing to get outside and sweat with great people! The gym itself is innovative and ready for just about anything you wanna work on to build your strength level. My favorite class was the Stength Pump & Flow! So many things I have wanted to work on were right in front of me! Everyone is friendly and willing to push each other to be great. If you want next level fitness this is the place to go! This place is legit. It's not a fancy Equinox, but it's not supposed to be. I have worked out and been an athlete my entire life and it's the best workout I've done since college training days. You can start slow and do the indoor classes or REALLY push yourself and do the outdoor classed with more running involved. I only gave it 5 stars because 6 wasn't available. I am a huge fan of the intermediate outdoor bootcamp with John. I describe it to friends as "crossfit without the Olympic lifting". This is a fun, challenging, motivating class and is different every single day. Some days are more strength oriented where you might use bands, bells, body weight etc., while other days are much more running focused (like hill repeats on Beacon Hill).  This attracts a group of likeminded focused athletes. John is firm but fair - this program will get you motivated and kick your butt. More...

This is the best total body work out around.  I have been an athlete all my life, even playing a bit of college sports, so i was looking for something that would challenge me.  I hadnt done much working out (a few years of slacking) but when i felt my body struggling just to play kickball, i knew it was time to do something.  John has been amazing and i'm elevated i joined this "gym".  I had no weight to lose, just muscle tone and definition to gain.  I initially committed to three months and i've seen big results.  The website claims you'll never do the same workout in one month, but honestly i dont think theres been a complete repeat in 3!  Join John and i promise you wont be disappointed ! The only reason I ever left is that I moved jobs out of the city. And if I get back here, this is my first stop for gyms.Forget the BSC's and the like . If you're ready to make a few life changes and need the continued support and constant contact accountability of a personal trainer, you absolutely must check out Beantown Bootcamp. John and Craig will personally make sure that every rep is form-perfect, all the while changing up your everyday workouts so you're constantly challenged. If you've ever thought about running an adventure race (Tough Mudder, Spartan Beast) they tailor their classes specifically to that level of runner-strong fitness and it's a great facility to use for preparations. They have run many of those races themselves - just look at the bib numbers lining the walls of their basement gym. Pre- and post- work workouts are the best, given the clean bathrooms and shower facilities available. I personally returned to my high-school-football weight, and found out that I actually have abdominal muscles, after attending for a month. At the moment, you can snag a free class at 5:30 and 6:30am in Government Center. No commitment, just free fitness. You'll meet a crazy bunch of encouraging members who are addicted to the system - and given the chance, you'll be addicted too. More...

I'm a former 12-time marathoner turned CrossFitter, and when CrossFit took a major toll on my knees I had to basically take a 4 month hiatus from any serious exercise. I think what I enjoy most about Beantown is that John is runner, and most of the other bootcampers are runners who use bootcamp to supplement their running for strength and conditioning. CrossFit, in my opinion, is not geared towards people who are runners who want to improve their running. I feel a significant improvement in my running when I am not at bootcamp and know it's a result of the hill and speed work John makes us do. The memberships at Beantown are pricey, but if you're committed, I think it's totally worth it. The classes are different every day and you never know what to expect, other than the fact that you are going to get your *ss kicked by John! I find myself 100% more motivated than I was being a member at Boston Sports Club and at CrossFit. John takes note of who actually comes and rips you a new one if you don't come regularly. More...

I managed to get out of gym class all four years of high-school through various schemes. I imagine this is where I would have originally been taught how to run and do push ups, both of which I have trouble with as an adult. Enter Beantown Bootcamp. I've been coming here for about 8 months, originally on a groupon and now as an annual member and I couldn't be happier. I've made a lot of progress since that first day in the "foundations" class with Craig (I thought I was going to throw up or die and then couldn't walk for three days). Though I still have a long way to go, I have lost 10 pounds, run a 5k without walking and am fitter than I ever have been in my life. I'm sure if I'd gone more than 2x/week I'd be a smokin' hot athlete by now. Oh well. Maybe this year.Anyway exercises are usually simple to understand--kicks, pushups, resistance bands, jumps, squats, bear crawls and running. You just do a lot of everything. And then do it again. And again. Each day is different (and when we aren't inside the scenery is different) so I still haven't gotten bored. The guys that run the sessions are great. Craig remembered my name after the first day and I think the fact that he really seemed to care that I improve made me come back the second time...and the third time. I'd call him a sweetie pie if I didn't think he'd be horrified.  John is hilarious--he'll be yelling things like "don't make me come over there you bastards!" and then stop by while you're doing jumping jacks and be all "hey buddy, how was your holiday?" Just be sure to wear proper attire, especially if you're outside...this means light layers, gloves (pushups on concrete anyone?) and definitely don't bring a big backpack because you never know when you're going to run all over the place (unless you're one of those jackasses that likes running with backpacks). I have only been a member of Beantown Bootcamp for a couple weeks, and I am already addicted. I joined specifically to train for a race I have coming up in a couple months. I had every intention of just joining for 2 months - until the race. But, after just one class, I decided to sign up for the year. It's that good. I always thought I was fairly fit - I've been working out my whole life, but I can already tell after this short amount of time that this is something different. These workouts are what people pay MAJOR dollars for personal trainers for. It's not cheap, but it is so worth it. John is tough, caring, knowledgeable, and even sort of sweet (although he probably wouldn't want me saying that). He works you hard and you feel GREAT when you're done. I have never felt this way after a workout in my life. TRY IT! More...

Went on a Groupon and had a blast. There are indoor weights sessions and outdoor cardio/typical bootcamp style (I assume) sessions.  I did the indoor one.  Small room in basement of 90 Canal St, I was not impressed when I first got there, but spending some time looking around the room and you soon realize that this is no joke.  How often do you get to learn 36 new exercises in an hour?  The hour went by so quickly, you move through exercises rapidly and so you don't get bored.  If you don't like an exercise, you won't be doing it that long, so it's not too bad.  The trainer is supportive and the feel of the class is great.Great cardio exercise.Great for toning. Not sure how great it is for bulking up.Fun, nonetheless. I tried it out and I have been a memeber ever since. Its not easy but every class is a new challenge, there is no way you can get bored or plateau.  You can choose whether to go at night or in the morning and there is Bootcamp cardio classes and Bodyworks strength training classes... its really your choice. Due to the structure of the classes its like having your own personal trainer, you will get one-on-one attention and get the benefit of the group setting.  The more often you go, the more you know the people and look forward to seeing them during the week.I was always an athlete but I never thought I would run races or complete a half marothon but I have, so I would recommend this program to anyone looking for an amazing workout in Boston.
