Richard is a fantastic teacher. He shows a huge amount of expertise, patience and good humour whilst he is keen to get results through building up his student's confidence. Our 9 year old daughter Wren started 2 years ago as a complete beginner (with non-musical parents). She absolutely loves going to lessons with Richard each week. As with a lot of beginners, she finds practicing in between times a lot more challenging ... however, Richard keeps finding ways to engage and encourage her to build good habits and to persevere. The performance opportunities Richard schedules throughout the year including; Studio 'band rehearsals' with fellow students, 2 concerts at Moles and busking for charity at the Christmas Market, provide a much broader, impactful experience for the students. We are very grateful to have found Richard and would recommend this school wholeheartedly! More...

Our daughter has always wanted to play the guitar, and luckily we found Richard! He has been teaching her for 8 months, and we are impressed to see what she is able to play already, she is only 7 years old. June is rather reserved of character, Richard gave her a lot of confidence in her, we appreciate his relational and professional qualities. June loves going to his classes. It's a beautiful meeting between a student and a teacher! The work is serious accompanied by humor. Our daughter is learning very fast. Well done Richard and June! And thanks for everything ! We have been so impressed with the school where my son has been going for just under a year. Richard is really experienced and the 1to 1 tuition means that the tuition is tailored to the individual. My son is thriving and really enjoys learning how to play so many amazing melodies, riffs and power chords. In between my son enjoys playing at home. There is a clear learning structure with opportunities to perform in public and frequent opportunities for feedback. I could not rate this school highly enough More...

Brilliant.
My son (14yrs) has increased in confidence and developed his guitar skills so much so that his school reports excellence in his GCSE. Richard brings positive encouragement, creativity and sense of humour to his one to one support. Richard has introduced all sorts of musical styles to my son.(and me).Bath Guitar School is much more than just individual tuition of music and my son has enjoyed the experience of the recording studio, band workshops and playing live as well.
He has also loved the opportunity Richard has provided to link music with raising money for local charitable organisations and community resources.
Highly recommended by my son and me

It's taken me a while to think about how to best express how grateful we are to Richard and how much he has helped our 10 year old son. Our boy has been having lessons with Richard for about 2 years now. We got in touch with Richard because we knew our son loved music and had 'an ear' but the traditional piano lessons, working through 10 little fingers etc, was killing any passion he had. We asked Richard to focus on building up skills without the pressure of exams and to allow our son to set the pace. That's exactly what he has done, although he's very good at carefully applying a little pressure when needed! Over that time Richard has gently developed his skills to, by now, a very high level. The regular opportunities to get together in workshops has been a great focus too. He has ignited a passion for music in him - introducing him to artists from all genres: we consider his lessons with Richard to be his real musical education. When our boy wanted to form a band with his friends we approached Richard for help. He was only too willing and helped the boys to play quite a few sophisticated songs that blow everyone's minds when they see the ages of the band members (all 10!). After many studio rehearsals this culminated in a live performance and a video and cd. Great! After all this time my son's confidence is good, any visitor to our home always gets a performance and he is a happy and fulfilled boy. Thank you Richard. More...

My son started lessons with Richard just over a year ago after becoming disillusioned with the teaching style of his previous (classical) guitar teacher. At 13 he has lots of other interests but he never needs persuading to go to his lessons now and always seems to enjoy his half hour "up the hill". I agree with other reviewers that Richard has given him confidence and is a good role model for young teenagers. Highly recommend Bath Guitar School, and thank you Richard! More...

Richard's a fantastic, humorous and patient teacher - he makes it really fun for them and they are playing proper tunes and riffs from day 1. He also does tons of extras - band workshops, charity busks and other events - which give the kids great opportunities to play with others and on public. Really fantastic, I would recommend him as a teacher to anyone! More...

Richard has been teaching rock guitar to my son since he was aged 6 and offers a non-traditional and fun approach to learning the guitar, accompanied with instilling a love & appreciation of rock music. If you’re after a very formal, exam-based music “grade” style of teaching, then Bath Guitar School is possibly not for you or your child. But of course, playing the electric guitar isn’t really about that, and Richard’s approach includes regular band workshops & performances for that real band experience plus individual performances uploaded to YouTube which enhance the weekly tuition sessions. Music theory is included in lessons, but in such an incidental way that it doesn’t feel like a chore.

Richard encourages parents (particularly of younger children) to sit in on lessons which is useful for monitoring and encouraging progress in the early days. As time goes on, it is clear Richard has a nice rapport with my son and I look forward to seeing his further progress over the coming years.

As well as the one to one lessons he organises group playing sessions to get the students used to performance, I have tried several teachers and none has done this. I've been learning with Richard for nearly a year now. Richard follows very clear structured lessons that are always on time. He provides plenty of learning material to aid learning.
The best thing is the group sessions, I'm part of the Acoustic Club, where we meet up regularly to demonstrate different songs that we've individually been learning in our lessons. This helps us to feel part of something & to help us get ready to play in public which also happens on a regular basis too.

Absolutely brilliant - I have been having lessons with Richard for over a year and he's been a massive asset to my playing and progression. His lessons are relaxed and chilled which is good. His musical knowledge is very extensive indeed, he really knows his stuff when it comes to theory, techniques, guitar music and almost everything else you can associate with the guitar. It's become clear that there isn't really a limit to what he can teach you, you're only limited by what you're prepared to learn... he's shown me that there's still a long road map ahead in terms of my own playing.. which is exactly what I wanted... despite all of this he still knows how to ROCK... which is what's it's all about at the end of the day... We looked at a few teachers for our son and thankfully decided on Richard. He is the perfect teacher for our 9 year old. He's patient, kind and just seems to "get him". Small wonder he enjoys going week after week and makes good progress each time. His concentration has improved and the desire to practise is so much greater. In a short space of time Reilly has played in the performance with total confidence - even if it wasn't 100% right - but that's what Richard also instills...the belief that you CAN do it. Can't rate highly enough...if your kid needs a teacher - don't waste time looking anywhere else! More...

My son Sam (8) has been learning guitar with Richard for just under a year and has found his passion. Not only does he love his lessons but Sam has already had an amazing amount of opportunity to perform in some fab venues in Bath. With so many great gigs and workshops organised by Richard, it has meant that learning the guitar has also become a social event for Sam; an absolute bonus on top of already fantastic lessons! I also love the fact that Richard is keen to raise money for local charities by busking with the kids and putting on fundraising gigs, creating more experience for his students whilst supporting very worthwhile causes.
Richard seems to have found the secret to being a relaxed and fun teacher whilst at the same time inspiring a high standard of playing and practise.

Richard has been teaching George for 6 years now. George absolutely loves playing his guitar and is always motivated to practise and learn. This is in no small part due to the great relationship he has with Richard, who perfectly strikes the balance between a relaxed and friendly approach, while not letting him get away with bad habits. George said as much when I asked him what he thought.

His comments were: “Richard is brutally honest and will always tell me what he thinks. That is great because there is nothing worse than a teacher who says ‘that’s good’ when you know it wasn’t really. Also he is a perfectionist, which is good for me, because I’m not a perfectionist, but it encourages me to try. And he is really helpful. If ever I’m having difficulty with something, he’ll suggest something new or a trick to help me get it.”

All in all, it's been a fantastic experience over the last few years & I have no doubt that George will continue to be stretched and challenged to do what he needs to develop into an accomplished young guitarist.

My son Ruben learnt guitar for about four years with Richard. Initially, Ruben never practiced and Richard was very patient with this as I really wanted the lessons to be a pleasure for Ruben rather than being another pressure to add to the existing ones of school work. After a few years, as Ruben matured, things started to change and he would talk about the lessons more and what he and Richard had been discussing and what music they’d attempted. For the last year of his time with Richard, Ruben ‘practiced’, or rather spontaneously picked up the guitar, almost every single day. It became his primary way of relaxing as opposed to looking at a screen. Ruben is now confident enough to play in public and sees his love of the guitar as part of who he is. He has stopped lessons now as he has chosen instead to start singing lessons, to which he takes….his guitar. Having decided to actually find a teacher and take some lessons I have been very fortunate that my quick Google landed me on the Bath Guitar School website. My first lesson was great! Richard took the time to find out what music I liked and what song I ultimately wanted to play (predictably it was Blackbird by the Beatles). Richard asked what I knew already and explained the format of the lessons. This personable approach is, in my experience, a part of each lesson. Each lesson feels tailored to you.
