Bass Rock did a two piece ceilidh for my husband's 40th and they were just excellent. It was a daytime party with a small crowd in a village hall, and everyone loved their music, their easy approach to getting us dancing and how engaging they were with us. Really fantastic band, so pleased we booked them! More...

If you love a Ceilidh, with a modern twist, professional and talented musicians, outstanding pre wedding communication and piece of mind about who's providing music on your big day then you MUST hire these guys. I'm being totally honest when I say that they are under charging for their service. Absolutely incredible. Thank you for making our day exactly as we'd imagined. Our guests adored you, and so did we. Bass Rock Ceilidh Band played for us at the evening reception of our wedding. We met up with Mary from the band prior to the wedding to discuss all the possibilities which was great, she is so lovely and every time I had been in contact with her nothing was a bother, she was always extremely helpful and open to what we wanted for our special day. The possibilities with the band suited us perfectly, we were able to have half a ceilidh for half the night and then a disco for the other half of the night which was exactly what we were after. They played amazingly well and were also very patient with us and our guests, many of whom were attending their first ceilidh, so having the band act as caller in addition to playing was ideal! The music was fantastic and their presence at our wedding helped contribute to a day that we will never forget. Simon was the DJ for the latter part of the evening, he was also great. We can definitely recommend Bass Rock Ceilidh Band to everyone after them being so wonderful on our wedding day! More...

Bass Rock Ceilidh band - how good are they? They're brilliant, that's how good they are. We organised a family ceilidh in our community centre and they came along - Not only did they play the music in excellent fashion they also managed to teach some of us the dances - and its not like we shouldn't already know them. The kids picked it up in no time and had a ball. More...

Q&As

We love watching people laugh as they dance, especially when they are learning , or even when things go wrong! We also love hearing people 'whoop' and yell along to the music. And probably the thing we love most is when clients and their guests come up to us at the end of the night and tell what a fantastic time they have had.

(Fiddle player Mary) I grew up listening to Bon Jovi and Def Leppard and grew my hair as big as theirs! So after thirty years as a jobbing fiddle player for many top ceilidh bands, I thought it might be a good idea to combine my love of rock with the strong beat of traditional music. After a shared car journey with fellow jobbing musician, George (drummer), which included a punctured tyre and therefore lasted two hours more than it should have, we decided to start our own band. And so with Bass player, Bill, who played with a Ramones tribute band, and Simon on electric guitar, the Bass Rock Ceilidh Band began.

We combine all the fun of a ceilidh, with Celtic Rock music. You and your guests will be waistcoat-wrestling along to Status Quo riffs combined with traditional Scottish and Irish tunes. We give full instructions for all our easy dances so even Uncle Alan can join in, and we bring disco so you can play your favorite song for the first dance or for later on in the evening. This means if the ceilidh is going well, we can keep it going, or the the guests would like a rest from the energetic dancing of the ceilidh, we can change to a disco to suit.

Services

Mary Gristwood's Rock Ceilidh Band (formerly the Bass Rock Ceilidh Band) are a truly electric four-piece ceilidh band with fiddle, bass (of course), electric guitar and drums (electric too), adding an exciting, modern twist to traditional Ceilidh music. Our approach is to merge classic rocks riffs into the ceilidh tunes ranging from Bay City Rollers to Motorhead adding a surprising, rockin' and fun element to the ceilidh dancing. Although this may give the impression of a LOUD band that needn’t be the case as all the instrumentation is fully electric and direct to PA with minimal amps, so we can keep volume levels low for small venues or when decibel limiters are in use. Smaller 3 piece (no bass guitar) and 2 piece (fiddle and acoustic guitar) lineups are also available to suit all venues and budget. DJ set is included in our standard 4 hour booking and can be used in whatever proportion clients prefer.

We have more years combined experience than we care to admit both at home and internationally, and hail from Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Central Belt. Although most of our gigs are in and around Scotland’s central belt, we have played as far south as Cumbria and as north as Gairloch. With most of us experienced ceilidh dance callers we will guide guests step by step through the most popular dances, and a few more unusual dances too, using fun-filled banter. This ensures that everyone can fully participate in the party no matter their experience. We really feel ceilidh is an integral part of any Scottish wedding, helping to bring all the guests together and celebrate this pivotal life event in a great fun and memorable way. Nice to rock out while you’re doing that too!
