I am a University of Cambridge qualified teacher specialising in banjo, guitar and ukulele for beginners. I have been teaching music for over ten years and in that time have developed a curriculum that makes music understandable from the very beginning.

I have been having electric guitar lessons with Sam for the past eighteen months. Sam is an exceedingly good teacher. He has a knack to be completely structured yet totally relaxed at the same time. I am aware that lots more people quit learning an instrument than those who keep trying and Sam's style and method have convinced me to keep going; he has a natural gift of making you feel comfortable , even when the going gets tough. Sam's teaching style is relaxed and lessons feel as though they are built around the student. The lessons are focused and Sam allows me to set the pace. Always leave having gained new understanding and with something to practice. I thought I needed some help after attempting self taught banjo. Turns out I did. [ It starts with where you place your hand and how . ..my biggest lesson yet. I think about it daily. Sam is and was right about all the things he taught. It just takes time to sink in with me...and a lot of practice...especially when you've been doing it wrong for a long time. If you are learning from Sam,.listen. Try to take it in. From such little said and meant , massive strides will develop. Im away! First up, banjo teachers are not easily found, good ones must be even rarer... Sam is a great teacher, very patient and a real student of the banjo himself. Lessons always involve a host of resorces to take away and are based on a good pace, so not overwhelming but also not too laboured. Sam has a magical power of spotting incorrect banjo picking, even with his back turned, so you can be assured of learning good technique! as well as all the bluegrass and clawhammer standards you could wish for. New teaching space is in a great location with easy parking etc and flexible options for buying blocks of lessons including his online calender for availability - not sure what else you'd want for banjo lessons, highly recommended ! Sam is a great banjo teacher but he doesn't just teach you how to play the banjo. I've learnt a lot about music in general and I've realised that Sam's aim is not to allow me to sit on the end of my bed and play tunes to myself but to give me the ability to make music with other musicians playing other instruments. I was a complete beginner at the banjo but I wanted to learn from an accomplished player. I had advice from Sam with buying a good quality banjo to start off with. Next I block booked lessons with him which got me playing with correct technique and learning to play songs straight away. From there I feel I've progressed faster by having lessons than trying to learn without and I'm looking forward to learning more from him in the future.Sam is an intelligent, kind and very good music teacher. I’ve been having lessons with Sam for 4 months now, he’s a great teacher and I feel like I’m progressing week on week. After a year of trying to teach myself the banjo from YouTube videos I found Sam’s number in Hobgoblin music shop and finally gave it a ring. I wish I had found it a year earlier! The lessons are fun and tailored to the kind of music and like and want to play. He always leaves me some interesting and challenging homework for the next lesson. Sam is a really great banjo teacher. His lessons are informal and great fun but he also has a really professional approach. Amazing :) my nearly 8 year old has asked me for the last 3 years to play music I told him find an instrument and we will take it from there he said guitar and chose it so I got him one and he's loving it really trying to rock out with it :) sam is a great music teacher and my son has a great bond with Sam it's also great as sam lives local too x :) x
