Afternoon Tea was delicious. There was only one other table taken in the Orangery, but christmas music helped the atmosphere. Lovely wee quiche, sausage rolls, sandwiches, dainty cakes, scones, cream. Tea and coffee topped up. Staff were excellent. More...

This is a truly great country house hotel set in the middle of a huge estate in Markinch, the ancient capital of Fife. The bedrooms were very comfortable and well-furnished, although an additional armchair in a double room would have been useful. Because of the hotel's location, all rooms are quiet. The lounges and the bar were very comfortable and cosy, providing welcoming spaces in which to relax, with or without a drink. The two restaurants (Bistro and Orangery) were good offering quite small but varied menus at reasonable, but certainly not cheap, prices. Markinch is a useful base from which to explore the East Neuk of Fife and Balbirnie House is the ideal hotel in which to stay. More...

Very pleasant staff. Lovely warm relaxed atmosphere. Felt small savouries would have been better served warm. Sandwiches looked nice and very fresh but slightly more filling would have given them a taste. Scones delicious and nice cake selection. Coffee/ tea refreshed regularly. Staff attentive but not intrusive. As we had a special offer deal felt good value. More...

The bistro downstairs is noisy but serves good standard and selection of food. But for areal treat use the Orangerie where the food, menu and table service is of the best quality. Prices are very reasonable too and well worth a visit.. More...

We arrived here unsure of what to expect. The drive up was lovely, scenic and the building itself is fantastic. We were given some history of the hotel which was great. We dined in the Orangery, first of all sat in the bar which was cosy and the bartender was quick to ask if we would like any drinks and was very knowledgeable about the drinks being offered. The menu is fantastic, although when my steak came out over cooked it was not a problem to be taken back and a fresh one brought out. The atmosphere in the restaurant was very nice although music maybe a tad too loud. Served by Kerri and Hamdi, were very attentive and went above and beyond their expectations regardless of the restaurant being so busy and a wedding taking place as well I have a 70th birthday in the near future and may well book in the private room I was shown. The property was absolutely beautiful...The staff were very professional and friendly..I would definitely recommend and visit again . .The only negative was I asked for an early morning call at 8am .. I never got the call !! This happened on both mornings I stayed .. when I told the blonde haired girl at reception she didn’t apologise or gave a reason why This I thought was very unprofessional... to happen twice was terrible...!! Staff, particularly Leah and reception staff were so helpful and approachable in months leading up to, finally, on our arrival and at start of wedding proceedings. Staff on any pre wedding visits we made, were extremely welcoming. Bride’s dad is wheelchair bound and naturally we had a few concerns regarding where it was possible for wheelchair to get around premises (both assisted/pushed and unassisted/ independent) as it’s only a plain manual w/ch. ||||Cobbles at front entrance were limiting even with assisted mobility. However with some kind understanding, effort and a supportive approach from staff, it all became do-able. They have good disabled modern public toilets within the hotel and it’s mostly easy to get about inside. The wedding breakfast, decor and surroundings were indeed first class. The accessible (accommodation/ room for disabled guests) was nice enough but not perfect as it’s an old building. Main issue of the room although lovely, was the bathroom/toilet. ||||The toilet’s ‘disabled’ facilities, although elegant, roomy and immaculate, are not up-to-date for accessibility for 2019 or 21st century. The shower, although ‘wheel-in’ had a superfluous dysfunctional (but wonderfully stylish looking) glass door which got in the way and didn’t fully open to say..a 180 degree angle, only around 90 degrees. So anyone wanting to get themselves into the shower in their w/ch may well discover difficulties. Disabled people aren’t too concerned about the elegance side of things in loo’s but more about the complete ease of functionality and preservation of dignity. ||||The w.c. (water closet, not wheelchair) had a grab-bar only on one side, not good! Neither was it the standard raised-in-height seat used by wheelchair bound folk, only the standard lower height one. There was no toilet lid just a nice wooden loo seat (just saying a lid is nicer). ||||The sink... well if you’re a giraffe it’s perfect as far as where the mirror is situated as it wasn’t in a satisfactory position (the bottom of this beautifully framed mirror was at least one foot or more above the top of head height of someone who’s sitting at the sink in their wheelchair...but it looked very elegant nonetheless...||||Getting about outside whilst in a manual w/ch needs assistance/someone pushing. This was do-able even although the lawn was slightly soft due to recent rain, we were lucky enough to have wedding photos taken outside on the wonderful long stone seat at back of lawn. ||||Many doorways within the building (the old solid doors) are heavy so anyone in a wheelchair won’t be totally independent and will mostly need someone with them throughout their stay. ||||A lovely venue overall though. I visited with my husband when we were over from Ireland, the staff are so knowledgeable and helpful and can't do enough to help. ||We felt so at home relaxing in the beautifully decorated lounge areas. We dined in the Orangery Restaurant and the staff were super attentive and we were well looked after the whole evening.||We had the Ribeye and the Beef Pave and it was gorgeous, also the 2 pots dessert and the verrine were to die for! Compliments to the chef :)||The house is full of history and the staff are always willing to pass on some information about the hotel and it's background. We will definitely be back, planning on coming back over to bring our families to stay and experience Balbirnie's customer service and attention to detail, it's second to none! Thank you!! x More...

We stayed over the weekend where there was a wedding on and were shown to another private lounge where we received table service drinks whilst staff checked us into our bedroom and helped with luggage.
