I am on a short business trip to Portland and I made sure this was our last (foodie) stop before heading back to Washington, DC. Hubby and I decided to share a dessert and decided to order the deluxe banana split. Holy s***! It was incredible, delicious, fantastic, yuge (yup, Yuge), all that and some. That was probably the best (vegan) banana split I have ever had. This bakery is TO DIE FOR. I'm vegan and if you are too you know that it's pretty hard to find good vegan desserts, but this place hit the nail on the head. I honestly can't even tell that their desserts are vegan, they're delicious. Prices are absolutely insane for any desserts here, even for vegan options, but it's close to our house so we go on occasion. Every single time we have gone, the desserts have been either dry or just foul, and have ended up in the garbage. The desserts/bakery would earn 2 stars, BUT we went the other day and got the pesto Mac for lunch from the cafe and omg! What Back to Eden fails in desserts, they make up for in the cafe food. If you're vegan and/or gluten free this place is paradise with an abundant menu of tasty breakfast and lunch food, pastries, and wonderful coffee. Gluten-free donut alert! I always get excited to find this unicorn. BTE features a good variety of baked goods, with favorites like cinnamon rolls & pie. The cappuccino is decent; they sold out of the donuts so I enjoyed a cinnamon roll instead. It was good. The ambiance leaves a little wanting - it’s breezy and chilly inside; I could feel a draft coming through the leaky wall of the building. Ambiance: Pastels and earth tones, very pretty. Music was cool--folk rock.Food: Very good/solid. I got the grilled cheese with tomato soup and a side salad with caesar. Everything was really tasty. Solid Vegan brunch!! Our party of 7 was super satisfied with food and service here. You seat yourself and they come and take your order. My brother and I shared the Vegan Chili Hash with Veggie Sausage and the Vegan Biscuits and Gravy. The chili had amazing flavor and is a LOT of food. I like this place for to-go meals/treats but dinning in can be a bit awkward. The food is great my favorites are the biscuit burger and any of their cream pies. The treats are hit or miss for me some are overly sweet for my taste but I crave a pumpkin cream pie from them all year! I love that they have the cafe option but the service is always a little off so I tend to get things to go instead of doing the whole sit down thing. I honestly haven't had a decent vegan dessert since my birthday in 2016 at Crossroads in LA. My husband and I went to enjoy a coffee and dessert after our nice anniversary dinner. We parked down the street and walked in the nice, cold weather. Back to Eden has two different sides, the food/coffee side and the bakery. We sat down at a table and ordered coffee. We were sad to hear that they shut down the espresso/cappuccino/latte machine a few hours before closing, but drip coffee was fine.  We got a Spumoni Mini Cake to split. It was beautiful. We dug into it and the taste was absolutely delicious. The cake itself was so moist and the icing was filled with flavor. Why we only had coffee at this establishment today, while they do offer a wide variety of pastries and various items, essert and ice cream. ... which all look very impressive. Their coffee, brewed locally in the neighborhood was excellent. The staff was very attentive. I give the servers at 5 as they did their job and everyone looked happy. The building is nicely rustic, with a very nice mural painting on the wall. An impressive sized framed mirror, a nice sunshine pierces through the front windows, warming the patrons that chose the window seats. Coffee was excellent. You will enjoy the endless cup at no extra charge! Top quality food products, unique repurposed furniture and a sustainability concept works here. This place was absolutely sublime! The food was so good and prepared with haste. The tofu hash, which was the meal I got, was so delicious I ate in in 10 minutes . I like to stop by this place when I am in the area. My brother and sister in law live close so I get to pop in a decent amount. I love that they have "No Added Sugar" options. As someone who's body doesn't process refined sugar well (not diabetic my body just stores it) I truly appreciate being able to grab a few treats instead of having to make them myself. I always want to give vegan restaurants five stars regardless but I have to be honest -- I was expecting more. But don't get me wrong, they do well at what they do. OMG so delicious and I'm able to eat anything there because it's all gluten free and dairy free!I enjoyed 4 cupcake varieties (chocolate with white icing, carrot cake, pumpkin, and pomegranate, all beautifully frosted) , rice crispy bar, cinnamon roll, and APPLE FRITTER!  I got a box to go, as I was visiting and wanted treats to last me several days.They also have savory items, including small quiches... And now I can't recall what else but if you are vegan or gluten free, this is definitely a wonderful place for you. This is my go-to. When I was just visiting Portland prior to moving to town, my trip always ended with my favorite Mount St Helens sundae with vanilla soft serve, house made berry sauce, candy gummies and added marshmallows. Plus that seasonal s'mores cake is a necessity. Since moving to town I know go regularly for brunch or lunch and I love everything I get.
