I had the pleasure to work with Marcus between April and June 2019. I was coming from some time off employment and wasn’t sure if jumping back to what I had been doing for the previous 15 years was what I really wanted, so was looking for professional support to help figuring it out. In my research I came across Appleby Associates and the ‘Focus’ package caught my eye. A free introductory session reinforced my initial hunch and I decided to give it a go. It worked beyond my expectations. During our time together I made important realisations about myself and my work which, although obvious in hindsight, I hadn’t paid due attention in the past. The outcome is that I now have a clear idea of where I want to be professionally and the steps I will take to get there. And because it feels much more inline with my personal inclinations, taking those steps requires less effort and certain things I dreaded doing in the past come about more naturally. I got in touch with Appleby Associates as a bit of a hit and hope endeavour knowing full well that I was lost in terms of career direction. In my very first conversation with Marcus he was very clear about the service offering and took time to listen to my circumstances and consider whether he could help; in fact in our first meeting, he immediately reduced the scope of what I thought I needed, because he assessed it just didn't fit y circumstance. From thereon it was just a great experience. Marcus provides fresh perspective, a wealth of experience, and some clever methods to help YOU determine what it is that YOU want to do. Having seen the costs involved I was initially sceptical and almost cancelled my initial meeting. However after speaking to Marcus I agreed to meet. I am so glad i did, initially he gave me some amazing advice and they worked out some support based on my budget including an amazing CV. Marcus helped me to establish the most suitable career path when I was not entirely sure what I wanted to do at this stage of my life. I have been historically very sceptical about self-development programs, life and career coaches. My previous experiences were not particularly helpful. What I immediately liked in the Appleby’s proposal was a very practical approach and a very thought through structure of the program. I have worked for 25 years. Many would say that I have had quite a successful career: an in many ways I have. But I have never known what I really wanted to do, despite expending significant time and energy trying to work it out. When I came to Appleby, my concern was that they would be wishy-washy, with nothing hard-edged that would actually change my situation. I was also concerned that there might be a “hard-sell” at the initial meeting, with pressure to continue whether I wanted to or not. Neither concern was borne out in the slightest. At the initial meeting Appleby listened then suggested that for me, stage 1 (the Focus stage) might be all I needed. There was no hard-sell and no pressure. After the meeting I talked it over with my family before committing. The process was entirely transparent. It is rigorous, no-nonsense and analytical – as well as imaginative and liberating. You yourself have to do the work. Some people do it in a matter of weeks. I took 7 months. My Appleby consultant was extremely generous with his time, never hassling me to reach decisions or to hurry up, but keeping in touch when I went quiet, guiding me and challenging me all the way. At the outset I had felt determined to give this a go as my one final attempt to find out what I wanted to do, but in truth I thought that realistically I would never find an answer. I really had so little idea of what appealed: I couldn’t tell whether I wanted to be a barrister, a chef or a gardener. Appleby isn’t magic. I didn’t suddenly discover a burning vocation I never knew I had. But now, having reached the end of the Focus stage, I know exactly where I am going next, and what is equally important, I know why, and I am happy about it.
