I booked this night away for my husband's birthday, as a surprise.We arrived and were informed that we had a complimentary upgrade to one of the Appleby cottages, which was amazing, thank you! .Our sitting room window was directly outside the keep!! Beauriful when lit with the floodlights at night!|An amazing setting and site!|Enjoyed dinner by candel light, and the great hall was amazing to sit in with the fire glowing!!.|Sadly, one member of staff needs re-trainning, and pronto, as the service delivery was appalling and he is rather rude, and customer care, well hardly any shown I'm afraid. It is such a shame that the hotel and site have it all, and are superb, but the service let's it down, massively!.Not all staff however as Jude, a very young waiter was amazing when he served us during our dinner service - well done Jude!.|Also, the nightporter we spoke to was very very knowledgeable and took the time to speak with us.|It was lovely to see the owner/director Ms Knightingale walk threw the establishment from her living quarters, she even came over and wished us a lovely evening, what a lovely lady!.It was a shame we didn't get to meet her two Irish Wolf Hounds, we waited around on checkout to no avail.|The woodland walk is amazing, such a lovely area to explore on foot!.|Breakfast disappointing, by pass the continental (not worth the money) jump straight in for a cooked breakfast, you won't be disappointed!.|Guided tour was amazing - a very knowledgeable guy takes you round - he has great passion for the place, and it's history!!. WOW! A truly magical experience having stayed for one night that we booked last minute we shall be returning. An exquisite castle being kept unspoilt by modern means our room was magnificent (Clifford room) highly recommended. Staff were courtious and very helpful at all times the food being traditionally set by candle light was superb. The grounds are beautiful and we would highly recommend the castle tour. Stayed over as part of a fishing trip and and what an amazing place.||The history of the castle and decor is simply amazing and the history exudes from all of the rooms and furnishings. ||I stayed in a self catering cottage which had all the facilities and more modern than the historical part of the castle which has tapestry's and huge 4 poster rooms.||It is an amazing place and definitely something for your bucket list.||Even better there is some fishing on the adjacent River Eden included More...

We ensured we had a room with en suite..the most impressive rooms have private bathrooms across a corridor. Just a lovely place, very quirky. Friendly helpful staff. Don’t miss it! This was our favorite place during our 2 week excursion through the UK. Upon arrival, we were greeted by James, a tall, svelte young man dressed in a dashing dark blue suit with burgundy windowpanes. Some other reviewers refer to him as a butler but I would say he is the host. He kept the fire stoked and brought us drinks and generally attended to all of our needs. The castle is divine. Our room, The Evidence was handsome and filled with dark ornate wood furniture. The castle is old and not perfect but that only lends to the authenticity of your experience. I prefer castles that look and feel old versus ones that have been completely modernized. You will have a true castle experience here. The dinner was delightful. Chris, the chef was superb. He served us sea bass and salad with an amazing chocolate tart and strawberry sorbet, just as we requested. We had a lovey romantic dining experience which I will keep as a surprise for you. Dining in the castle is a must. It was grand to be a queen and king for a day. Our only regret is not staying 2 or 3 nights, as we only allowed for 1. More...

Simply loved Appleby Castle. Dunno about the hotel but the Castle is a gem both in site and situation. Would have liked to see more rooms than just the 2nd hall plus a tour of the keep....considering it cost £12.50!

The history is fascinating and again this is a remnant from Roman occupation with a moat to boot,a very pleasant river walk and beautiful grounds for a walk and opportunity to imagine what occurred here many hundreds of years before.
