Have got my Togo order wrong multiple times.. it's a shame, I'll look forward to a certain item I like and get something completely random and different..

Do not go! I used to be a huge fan of alto cinco, and recently went after being away from college. I ordered the salmon salad and was extremely disappointed. The salmon comes in large($17) and small($14). I got the large and the piece of salmon was maybe 3 oz AT MOST. Extremely upset that I paid 17 dollars for a lousy cooked piece of fish with what was a poor mans salad. The server was kind but said they recently changed their menu a little bit. I highly advise against spending your money at what used to be a good restaurant, now unsatisfying. More...

I was totally digging this place for it's vegan options (ordering several times in two weeks) then suddenly they were out of guacamole. I thought it was just a shortage but it went on for over a week. My husband inquired about it and was told that the price of avocados is too high. WHAT !! I'll pay more. Give me guacamole. You're a Mexican restaurant!! You should have guacamole!! So we stayed away for a bit, hoping they would finally buy some avocados. Tried again today with fingers crossed. The employee taking my order did not mention they were out of guac so I was excited. Got it home and found nothing but disappoinment in our takeout bag: No guac on the nachos. No guac AND no spinach on the "Frisco" burrito (I received rice and beans in a tortilla). My husband's shrimp burrito was also lacking. Totally and completely disappointed!! More...

Favorite restaurant in Syracuse.Unfortunately can't indulge much anymore because they practically doubled the prices. :|They don't seem to be struggling though - looks like it's working out for them.

I love the atmosphere of this spot. The food and drinks were great as well. I had a margarita and the shrimp tacos. The shrimp here is to die for! The food was a bit slow to come out, but our waitress was really nice. On Mondays it's $5 traditional margaritas and nachos! More...

I came here with my boyfriend and his family on the way to a wedding in Nashville. My boyfriend's dad is from Syracuse and his family highly recommended Alto Cinco. As a Mexican food and otherwise Southwestern food buff, I was excited. Everyone recommended the catfish a bajillion times, but unfortunately it was fried, so I couldn't have it (celiac disease). Instead, I grabbed the stuffed pepper special, which was super delicious, but also not what I expected. A lot of the food tastes more New Mexican-y, which is not a bad thing. I wasn't sure exactly what kind of food it was for "Tall Five." The decorations are amazing. Even a trip to the bathroom waiting in line wasn't so bad because I could peek at details on the wall. They go hard, it's great. Even the bathroom has a chalkboard wall so you can read graffiti while you poo. Lovely, actually. Pretty much everyone we were with had the fiddleheads, so I tried those too and I thought they were really delicious. More...

The first time I ate here, I had the vegan tostada, and I loved it! The guacamole was yummy and the salsa was fresh. I came back for dinner the next night because I liked it that much. Unfortunately, the black bean soup and nachos I had that night just weren't as good. I hugely appreciate that Alto Cinco carries vegan options. It's not easy to find Mexican food that doesn't contain dairy. I've been back for breakfast a few other times. I like the food sometimes and it's not exceptional - I wish that it was consistently good. I have yet to find a better Mexican eatery in Syracuse so I would recommend it. More...

Flavorful and filling. Also quite affordable if you are a student. Though you might have to wait in queues as the restaurant is always crowded and your orders might take awhile to come but I guess its worth the wait. Mexican Pizza is one of the best!

When I order take-out here, the food is fantastic and I have no complaints. Whenever I eat in the restaurant, I experience bad service, very long wait times for the food, and the food is cold when it arrives. The order also tends to be incorrect in some way. I can't recommend eating here, but I certainly can recommend the take-out option. Order ahead of time! More...

Been here a few times the past two years and I've also ordered out from here a few times too. Ordering out from here takes foreverrrrrr. And I only live 10 minutes away! It took almost and hour and a half for the food to here a by the time it got here, it was soggy and cold. The service here is generally pretty slow and not very friendly, but the food here is is pretty alright. I much prefer it over their sister branch of Ocho Cinco. The corn tortillas here are slightly fresher and softer than the ones at Ocho Cinco, which makes their tacos better. The food here also isn't authentically Mexican, but it is yummy! This past time we ordered enchiladas and a burrito. I asked for the burrito to be "smothered" in sauce and the waiter said that would be no problem at all. When the burrito came out, it wasn't smothered at all. In fact, there was barely any sauce on it! What a shame.Overall, this is a pretty okay place to get food, especially if you're near the Westcott area. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food though, you won't find it here. More...

I love Alto Cinco, it's one of my favorite places to order takeout from. My go-to order is catfish tacos with sliced avocado and a side of guacamole. Super super flavorful and filling. Our son and his wife took us here a few months ago. Everything was fantastic. Went with my wife, sister, and her husband yesterday. Meh! Nothing was "bad" but nothing was great either. Wait staff were good. Food was OK. Tomatoes in Salsa were not even close to ripe. Seasoning, again not nearly as good as the last time. Will try and give it a shot again in Maybe 4-5 months. Won't bring anyone else with us in case it is not back to what it was . More...

Alto Cinco has a neighborhood-friendly vibe, good service, food, and drink selection. I've dined here many times and have always been satisfied in the quality of their fresh food, spices, time, and portion. The atmosphere and outdoor seating is warming to the Westcott community. Not to mention their 25 cent candy machine which toddlers and kids always enjoy! Highly recommend. Good times. More...

Consistent and fairly priced. Nice atmosphere without being uptight or giving you the feeling you under-dressed. Plenty to choose from whether you like savory, salty or spicy. Not for those looking for authentic or traditional Mexican cuisine, this is a spot for something fun and different. The Catfish Burrito is must-try. Good cocktail selection and a few taps as well. I've lived right around the corner for almost seven years and I can say that some restaurants on Westcott will have good days and bad days, but Alto Cinco is consistently nothing short of great. If you have a lot of time to wait this is the place. Siesta is the theme. Had we known this we would have gone elsewhere. People who arrived after us were served first and we had to ask for water refills during our extended wait. The queso had an uncooked flour taste so overpowering it wasn't worth getting. Grilled shrimp we severely over cooked. When you cannot stab it with a fork...  another had a burrito.... average at best. Catfish quesadilla , he ate half. Nope, won't return. We will stick with Rio in L'pool. I mean really.... chips and salsa are not free. More...

This review is more about Alto Cinco as a whole rather than the restaurant. Alto was the first place I stopped when I moved to Syracuse- I had the coconut rice porridge for breakfast ( RIP). I loved the little space, which has since expanded. I do think that alto should give chips and salsa to every customer, especially given its price point. I also think their food needs more flavor, more depth of spice, and more salt (they under salt their food, it's a known fact amongst my friends). But Alto is a lovey place to come for a dinner with friends, a drink at their copper bar, or a celebration. The bartenders are always friendly and can make any drink your heart desires, there is always a great variety of beers on tap, and lots of delicious wines. Their salad choices are also pretty solid and Alto is a good choice if you want something healthy to eat- any of their burritos can be made into a bowl and they are very accommodating as far as dietary needs. That said, this isn't authentic Mexican food by any stretch, but it still tastes good and is a much better option as opposed to xo taco. More...

I heard this place was good. But when we ordered and received our food the item was not even what was represented on the menu.  When someone is allergic and carefully reads the menu for a certain ingredient it is expected it is not on the food. Everything about this restaurant was authentic and beautiful. The way the restaurant was decorated to the presentation of the meal. We started with the Queso as our appetizer- it was absolutely delicious! I ordered the Jerk Chicken Tostada- although it looked delicious (picture below) it was lacking flavor. It had many different layers to the dish but all the flavors seemed to be dull and blend together. Our desert choice was Chocolate Creme Brûlée and Aztec Hot Chocolate- The creme Brûlée was absolutely delicious and everything we had hoped! The Aztec hot chocolate was less spiced then it was spicy overall. I knew it would have a spicy kick but didn't enjoy that the chili pepper taste overpowered the chocolate and cinnamon flavor. Our waiter was very friendly. I would come back again and give this place another chance. More...

In my opinion, one of the best Mexican restaurants in Syracuse. I didn't get time to take a pic of the salsa because we ate it almost immediately! Fiesta Salad used to be my staple meal and Alto Cinco was my GoTo restaurant, but those days are gone. One year ago I went with friends and the Fiesta Salad was missing a key flavor that made it distinctive.  The next time I went i had salmon instead and the portion was paltry.   Last night a friend convinced me to get takeout from there (over a year later), and it was even worse.  There were a few shreds of chicken and I nearly missed the essence of avocado that they waved over it.  And the dressing was still bereft of flavor that it had in the past. Alas, my favorite restaurant and meal are only a faded memory. More...

Fresh Mexican food with awesome flavor.  This was a go-to spot when I was in college, and after a recent visit, I was re-impressed with the food.  I ordered the catfish burrito with the spicy-habanero inferno sauce.  The fried catfish offers a crunchy outside with a soft flaky interior.  The fresh made chips, and creamy guacamole were a nice addition to the meal.  I don't know when I will make another trip up to The 'Cuse, but a trip to Alto Cinco will be included in my adventure. I went to lunch here with two of my friends, the service and light get wasn't up to par off the bat. The waitress failed to have a beer on tap menu or know the selection, no bean dip or retried beans for the chips and the pitcher of margaritas I ordered wasn't the best.  She didn't even try to upsell me on a better margarita. I had two lobster tacos and a chicken burrito. The food came quickly, but lacked a warm delivery. Don't get me wrong, it was good but it lacked that warm presentation. I finished my entire meal without being asked if the food was good or if I needed anything else. The effort given by the staff was marginal, the quality of the food made up for it. More...

I rarely take issue with the food at alto. It is consistent in its preparation and taste. Usually i am happy but sometimes it doesn't really excite me. I am from out of town and on my last trip it took a long time to get our food and it seemed that the restaurant wasn't busy. Southern by birth and a recent transplant from the west coast, I was thrilled to see a place where I could get fish tacos and catfish. Food was actually pretty good. That being said, the service was absolutely horrendous. We waited ten minutes at the bar watching the bartenders texting before anyone even acknowledged us and then another ten before we had a drink. We sat At the table for 15 minutes before we saw a server. We ordered apps and then entrees, all of which arrived at the table at the same time.  Of all the employees we encountered, not one greeted us with a smile or attempted to make conversation or act hospitable in any way. One of the best spots in Syracuse. Living only a block away from the main Westcott strip I tend to frequent the location. Whether it's $2 taco day or a late night drink after the bars, the experience has always been amazing. First, the margaritas are very delicious. I usually get the house margarita, which tastes as if it's made with high-quality tequila. I feel like most restaurants make their house margs with cheap tequila and you can taste it. Now on to the most important item, the TACOS. Each week, I try a different taco from their $2 menu. The tofu and chicken are my two favorite thus far. The protein is packing with flavor and the cabbage on top has a refreshing crunch. Paired with a bowl of chips and salsa, a trip to Alto Cinco is a perfect Taco Tuesday! More...

I had only been here for dinner two years ago, but my friends and I wanted to give it a go for brunch. My friends are both vegan, so they each ordered the Vegan Tostada and the Vegan Scramble, while I got the Lonestar with a side of Jalapeño Corn Bread (which even my vegan friends had, so I guess they're vegan when it suits them?).When the food came out, the overall impression of presentation was that the Vegan Tostada and Lonestar looked appealing and great, while the Vegan Scramble was riddled with brown and mustard yellow and nothing more that it resembled a very bad night at the bar. Taste-wise, the two vegans were very happy with their selection, though it was said that the Vegan Tostada was covered in far too much Avocado. In fact, someone joked that there were two Avocados worth of guac on top.For me, I wasn't sure at first when I tried each of the components separately, however when I took the egg and chili relleno and put it on top of the toast with a piece of the turkey bacon....that was Heaven. The jalapeño cornbread was good, but personally the taste of the jalapeño didn't do it for me, though the two vegan traitors of mine both finished 1.5 each! It's definitely worth a try, and I'm sure I'll be back eventually, but it is not a go-to spot for me at the moment. I'm not quite sure how this restaurant still keeps their Monday night bartender employed. Either the owner isn't paying attention or they just don't care about their business. I went in last Monday to have a few cocktails and was never even acknowledged by the miserable bartender. He literally didn't speak and just looked at me when I asked for a drink. Fine. Whatever.  He never asked if I wanted food and once my glass was empty ... NEVER even asked if I wanted another drink. I literally sat there for 20 minutes, awkwardly with an empty glass in front of me. I finally waved him down and said "okay I guess I'm done" I STILL got no response besides a pretentious glare and my bill was placed in front of me. If you hate your job so much then why do you tend bar? Why ruin everyone else's evening? I wish the owner would open their eyes and maybe take a look through all of these reviews.. The food seemed fresh, so that was cool. My soft tacos weren't very flavorful and the rice was incredibly wet and bland. The employees seemed overworked--the flustered host ran back and forth and gestured and did his best to be polite for probably five minutes before we were seated, which was weird because there were no other people waiting or any visible reason to stress. Our waiter was some brooklyn-portland hipster hybrid who answered our earnest questions with silence and glares. Man I am so happy to be writing this updated review now. This place is great! It's one of my favorite Syracuse spots that I believe every local should hit up at least once. We've been there many times but on this embark we went on cinco de mayo (we also went the next day for breakfast, what can you say we love Mexican food ‍),  granted the line was long but that's on us. The food was delicious, we had the chips and salsa sampler where you get guacamole, chunky salsa, and pineapple salsa for an appetizer. We love chips so this was absolutely perfect (we had to order additional chunky salsa because we like lots of salsa). For dinner we got a BBQ chicken quesadilla (which is mouth watering just thinking about it) and the nachos which we added chicken on. The nachos could have been a lot better but the quesadilla was out of this world. The next morning we tried the shrimp burrito and that is definitely one that must be tried... overall this place is great, we even brought our own sparkling apple juice because we don't drink and like to feel fancy. They were super cool about it and would highly recomendable giving this place a try! More...

I have only good things to say about this place (amazing food, cool atmosphere, etc)...ECXEPT they've got a bartender working, well at least Monday and Tuesdays, who is rude, slow, and, in case I didn't mention it, rude. It's hard to describe him as he fits into the general category of tall dude in his '20s with sculpted beard, rolled up jeans, and so on. But I will not return on nights I see his unsmiling, unhelpful, unwanted visage. The end.Not quite. That dude took my drink order, served some newcomers, waited 15 minutes, and never delivered. Basically a repeat of last night when I was there with a gorgeous female friend. He kinda ruins the place. More...

Alto Cinco is easy to locate and fairly decent restaurant. I tried the chicken salad and was very satisfying and had good portion for the price .But this place lacks in good alcoholic cocktails and the one that I ordered was decent but not how any other good bar would serve. You could easily get a table to eat without reservation , even on weekends . I went to Alto Cinco last night with a friend of mine for National Margarita Day, which up until yesterday afternoon I hadn't realized was a thing. The atmosphere at the restaurant is very cool. It could be lit a little more, but we also went at night which played a factor in how dark it was. I ordered the traditional margarita on the rocks and it was excellent, so much so that I ordered a second one after we finished eating. The chips and guacamole were also very good. You could tell the guac was fresh which was very important to me. I ordered the California Burrito for dinner. It was very good but a little messy. It kept falling apart in my hands. I wasn't able to finish it. The service was a little slow, but our waiter was very kind and respectful. Though tucked away on Westcott Street, I would recommend Alto Cinco to anybody who loves Mexican food, or for somebody who just wants to grab a quick drink and chips. More...

Typically my favorite restaurant in syracuse, but this experience was less than desirable. Service was extraordinarily slow. I ordered a quesadilla and it took 30 minutes to arrive. My friend ordered the special and arrived promptly-but had a hard piece of black plastic embedded into the food. My quesadilla came out after my friends meal was taken back to the kitchen and she got her new meal. Very unhappy with this experience. Manager apologetic and first meal comped...but nonetheless, still disappointing More...

Stopped in here for a drink and dinner before my girlfriend's brother went back to college. Arrived early to put our name down for a table. The wait, ~30 mins, was pretty good for a packed house and a party of 5. Got an old fashioned at the bar and it was fantastic. There is a surprisingly solid selection of whiskeys available! Was seated, and then, unfortunately, waited about 10 minutes before anyone even came over to our table to greet us. I get that the place was full, but I think even a "hey guys I'll be right with you" would have gone a long way. That's where the star gets taken off. Otherwise, literally no complaints. The food was fantastic, I got the jerk chicken quesadillas and they, along with the mango salsa was great! Other dishes at our table included cheese quesadillas, catfish tacos, and a veggie/tofu burrito. All positive things were said about the food and even how quickly the kitchen was pushing food out. After everything was said and done, would definitely come back at a less busy time for another drink! I think next time I'll try to actually sit at the bar. The table behind the bar can be a bit tricky since there are servers coming in and out of that area, so you always have to be conscious of that sitting in the back. More...

always liked this place.  decent beer selection.   food is generally good.  they recently remodeled the place and I am not sure why they didn't remove the original bathroom and make the bar bigger.  The bar here is an attraction but when there's not seats taking a table is not as fun.  then you feel encouraged to order food when your there to just have a drink. Anyways, about my visit - ordered the calamari and it was undercooked and had barely any breading.  I mentioned it but was only offered more of it to take home.  I don't want more, i didn't like what I had.  removal from the bill would have been nice.  my bar tab clearly paid for the cost of goods.  In their defense, this could just have been how they serve it and I like my calamari a bit less rubbery so that's my bad? i think? Anyways, I won't be ordering it again, should have just gotten the burrito. More...

I ate supper here with a friend on Dec 1st. The last time I was here was before they expanded. I ordered a jerk chicken burrito, which came really really fast. Too fast. It and the sides (cooked spinach and beans & rice) were stone cold. I asked the (verynice) waitress if she would take it back and nuke it or warm it up in some way. It came back not quite luke warm, burned on the top. She explained that they had put it in the oven. She explained that the owner didn't want to microwave food at Alto Cinco. What kind of a cook would think that  the inside of a 3" thick burrito packed full of chilled chicken, (bland) cheese, and rice would change temperature if the top got toasted briefly? A stoned cook? A cook who didn't show up? All in all, this restaurant has gone completely down the tubes. Don't waste your time. More...

Alto Cinco has made a HUGE difference in their delivery time it is much faster now, I ordered for my boyfriend and I and we were shocked how fast it arrived! We got our food around 30 minutes later! I tried their bbq tofu burrito today and it was super good! I got it completely vegan and gf and it was great! The only thing I forget about this restaurant is they really like to put this pickled pink stuff on a l lot of the items on the menu. It actually tastes pretty good and gives things a unique flavor but I get sick of it after a few bites. I just have to remember to specify I don't want it next time :) great food, fast delivery a little pricey but due to the change in delivery time and quality of the food I would definitely say it's worth it. Although the food is excellent, there is a reason for the 4 stars. The pricing and service are not top notch. I have gone here 3 times recently, each time in a party of 4. Twice our server was a little rude, almost as though they were irritated by us. The food is also a little expensive for what you get. The protein options are also very limited, but knowing that you cannot get cow or pig ahead of time will prepare you for what to expect. The food itself tastes very good. Although the quesadilla was a little bland for my liking, the nachos as an appetizer with the pickled jalapenos was very good. The Chile Rellenos burrito was very filling and had the right amount of seasoning and bite. The sides are small and ensure that you clean your plate when you're done. Our last few experiences were good. The atmosphere is darkly lit and intimate but it can be quite loud due to the odd layout of the restaurant. Overall it's a pleasant experience and I would recommend trying it if you're in the area. More...

I couldn't say enough good things about Alto Cinco. Their food is both delicious and a bang for your buck. My sister and I both dream about the fiesta salad. The last time we were there they featured a special on their house margarita and it was delicious paired with a trio of chips, salsa and guacamole (which was quickly devoured). Review of Alto and Otro Cinco. They SUCKED! Order was placed at 4:41p.m. , was told that it would arrive between 50-60 minutes. The establishment we ordered from was 7 minutes from our home. Almost 80 minutes into the order, my husband called. We were told that the order had just left the building 5 minutes ago. When it arrived, it was STONE COLD, congealed, and completely inedible. My husband called back, we were basically blown off. Asked to speak to a manager, NEVER were connected to one. FOUR phone calls later, being hung up on once, employees impersonating management, and STILL not assured that our bank account was refunded later..... DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT PATRONIZE EITHER OF THESE ESTABLISHMENTS. Never will we order from either. Given that we even called their 'sister' restaurant to speak to an owner, manager, someone who would make this right, and was blown off by both, were not even provided with a legitimate name or better yet our contact information taken for someone to speak to us about the matter speaks VOLUMES about BOTH establishments, their work ethic, quality of service and product. My last comment is that when our order was taken we utilized our debit card. Not ONE individual between TWO establishments given every piece of information could correctly pull up our order. At one point, we were told we had to "take it up with GrubHub". We did NOT order through GrubHub, nor any other online food ordering service. We called the restaurant directly, provided our information directly; yet when the order came, MIRACULOUSLY , we were NOT asked to sign confirmation of our payment for order. Something stinks here. And God help this establishment if they are engaged in billing practices that are less than above board. I had to choose a star rating before I could proceed with this review, FYI Yelp, they did NOT even rate the one star I was obliged to give them in order to forewarn others of these two related establishments. Where to begin... Alto Cinco was my favorite restaurant for the entirety of my college career, and I am truly pained to no longer have any friends or family in Syracuse that would give me an excuse to binge here ten times a weekend anymore. My close friend lived around the corner in college, and every time that I'd visit Cuse, Alto Cinco was the first place I'd go. The freshness of their produce, especially the jalapeños, was outstanding and the guac always tasted newly mashed. Please, do yourself a monster favor and feast on the catfish quesadilla with spicy chipotle sauce with a side of chips and guac; however, their shrimp (or catfish) burritos with mango salsa were out of this world as well. I miss the hell out of being able to eat here -quite literally three or four times a weekend- and Alto Cinco is the perfect spot for a small family dinner, date, or quick meal with some friends. Cheers! More...

I have tried so hard to like alto cinco...but I'm over the mediocre service, high prices and charges for everything extra, all for food that is completely hit or miss and lacks seasoning. When you order delivery from here, they are bound to forget at least one item, side, anything you can think of ( and they've charged you for.)They are not the best Mexican, Tex mex, fusion, etc in Syracuse. Not terrible. And not very Mexican. It's the kinda thing your sweet, white grandma might make from a recipe in a magazine. The ingredients are good quality, but the food is nothing special. Enchiladas were mushy and bland, flavored with a hint of cumin and some salt. The beans are flavorless, and I'm not even sure what to do with the sour cream as this is meant to cool the palate, but there's nothing that gives heat. Anyway, I would come back when I'm feeling like expensive white people food. Oh, and they don't give you chips or salsa, which is sorta standard. Went in for a celebratory lunch on the occasion of Cinco de Mayo. The food quality thankfully remains the same. Today had an amazing chips and salsa, but the server didn't seem to care about allowing me to bring the salsa back. How? By not providing boxes in spite of asking for one. Am not the kind to be mean about tips for such issues, so he got the usual cut. but I really do wish the servers would care a bit more about the customers and their needs. Hope they read this review. Continuing on the food note: great chicken enchilada as usual. I had it with rice and beans, and a corn bread. I love corn bread. My friend, who was trying out the place for the first time, went for a chicken quesadilla. She was a little surprised by the bbq sauce kind of mix on the chicken. Alto Cinco is a fairly small Mexican restaurant in the Wescott neighborhood of Syracuse, NY. I'm not generally a fan of Mexican food, but I appreciated the uniqueness of the menu so it took me awhile to order. It was late so I just went with 2 chicken tacos. They were delicious! EXCEPT, there was this odd dark, think, saucy topping on them that was super spicy and caught me off guard (I ended up using my fork to remove it from the taco). I'm not a huge spice person so that's probably why I wasn't a fan of the sauce. The tacos had a soft shell but were still heated to have a little crisp. My friend ordered a simple quesadilla, but he was excited to pack up his leftovers for lunch the next day. The waitress was super cool (I told her I was there for a school project and she immediately asked if there was anything special she could do to help me out). The decor in the restaurant was unique. There were lots of small pieces of artwork on the wall. The restaurant is broken into a few different sections: take out, bar, tables. I thought it was cool that they have an 'order at a counter' option as well as a full restaurant. Overall, I'd definitely go back. There are more things on the menu I want to try. I'm new to Syracuse and Alto Cinco is one the places that a lot of people have told I must try before I graduate. More...

The only reason for the 2star was because I LOVE THEIR CHEESE & BEAN BURRITOS the last time I was there very disappointed because it was much smaller than usual and cold. I go again because just thought because it was late everyone has an off night the same thing again happens.  I use to brag about how great their burritos were and now it's the size a fast food restaurant would serve.  Their food is exceptional but when all you end up eating is burrito shell or because the lack of content that once was in the original burrito is no longer there, it was once incredible, it's very disappointing.  I will again come back because I love their food I hope they don't lose site of what brings people there and what they are use to getting especially when I always brag about everything there.  I will say the service and those who work here are still 5 STARS! I've been to many Mexican restaurants and I consider myself a foodie, so when I say that this review is my honest opinion, I wouldn't tell you anything wrong. This place has a great ambience with a somewhat of a authentic Mexican feel. The ceilings are very high. Nice little decor. We were seated in the back at what looked like a booth for 6. It was cozy, but a cool breeze made it a bit uncomfortable being that it was something like 14 degrees outside. I was with my family(party of 4 & baby). We ordered chicken burritos and a jerk quesadilla, some fries and the guacamole. I'm just going to say this, the service was good, but the food could have been better. It just didn't taste AUTHENTIC. 7/2/16: We descended into the Westcott neighborhood in search of a living space and discovered this gem!  Never had we even set foot in Syracuse, NY, we were in awe of this neighborhood's vibe of small businesses, friendly walking people and pets, quaint houses...it was all just so us!  After seeing the 1st apartment in our housing journey, we walked a couple blocks to the mainstream area of Westcott and found Alto Cinco waiting for us.  We hadn't eaten a proper meal yet having been traveling from Baltimore all day long.  I was DYING for a margarita.  The weather was nice so we sat outside and was immediately greeted by an amiable server, presenting us with menus.  I was torn by the food options.   I love a good taco and how could i choose between the unusual options of Jerk Chicken tacos vs Catfish tacos I got the Catfish tacos...so very good.  2 Soft flour tortillas (must be put on a grill or something b/c they are warm, crispy, and chewy all at the same time) filled w/ fried catfish strips (still and crackling when they get to the table) topped cheese, salsa, red onions (pickled?), cabbage, chipotle mayo & red sauce beside it was yellow rice with black beans atop and a bit of pico de gallo, AND a side salad of mixed salad greens in strips, carrots, scallions, and a chipotley-creamy salad dressing.  My husband got jerk chicken enchiladas with steamed spinach and a big ole piece of cornbread.  My margarita was perfection as well. I had a fantastic meal here with my friends! Everyone love their order. I had the bean and cheese enchiladas and they were delicious. For sides I ordered the rice and beans and spinach. I wish they gave a little bit more spinach but what I had was great. One of my friends ordered a chicken enchilada, which isn't on the menu but you can still ask for, and the other two had the California Burrito with chicken - great guac ratio. All in all, there were no complaints and we will definitely come back when we have a craving for Mexican food. The drinks were also very good and were not watered down. Our waiter was funny and prompt, a perfect combination. My only wish would probably be for them to have Margarita pitchers. We also got a great parking spot right in front and it was after 6 PM so we didn't have to pay. More...

I've been to Alto Cinco for brunch twice now and really love it! If you're looking for a delicious local brunch spot, Alto should be on your list!If you plan to come for Sunday brunch try to get here earlier since they don't take reservations and its a popular spot. On my recent visit for sunday brunch, we waited 10-15 minutes but I quickly heard that wait time go to almost an hour after more parties showed up. The menu has a lot to choose from, from their Mexican dishes to more traditional breakfast dishes like pancakes. I really like their jalapeño cornbread and recommend it if you like a bit of spice. I've had their huevos rancheros which were tasty and fresh. It comes with black beans and hash browns so it's a decent portion. The hash browns here are good, cooked like home fries but the black beans were just okay. On my most recent visit, I had their specialty omelet which was cooked perfectly with hash browns and toast. I can't remember everything in the omelet but it had a lot and was more than filling. Everything I've had here always tastes fresh and made to order which is nice. I only wish the huevos rancheros were spicier but that's what hot sauce is for :)I've had a good experience with the service here as well. Sure, they're busy most of the time but the servers were always good about stopping by the table to ensure we were okay. The bartender is awesome! He makes great drinks and is always so pleasant and friendly no matter how slammed they are. Overall, this is a great brunch spot with their casual ambiance and delicious foods. Would definitely recommend it to others! More...

Overall I would say Alto Cinco is ok. The food is good, not great and extremely over priced for what you get. I just cant get over paying $17-20 per meal for a couple tacos. Although, they have a nice selection of beers and drinks to choose from. The best part about the entire restaurant to me is the out side seating on a nice day. I live off of Westcott and have been here three times for the convenience of a walking distance restaurant and have regretted it each time. The food is no where near the price of it. More...

Food was great. The service was the worse we've ever experienced. It took over 30 minutes to get a glass of iced tea and an hour to get served. We had to beg the hostess to find our waiter and who actually walked by our table an astounding 15 times before acknowledging we were even there. More...

Alto is a neighborhood joint which specializes in what I call "hippie Mex." Interesting flavors that don't necessarily conform to traditional Mexican ingredients and presentation. It's more "Mexican-inspired" cuisine, but my experiences have always been good, and the food is inventive and interesting. I've read a number of other reviews that complain about the service. It's a busy restaurant, and while not fine dining, they give you time to chat and it's low pressure, but you might want to allow some extra time on nights before a show at the theater next door, Syracuse University games, and weekend brunches. They also serve food into late-night (one of the few places in the area) but be warned that after 10PM the menu is limited, and the bar staff are the only people on the floor, so don't expect doting table service once they've made the switch over to bar menu. Selection of rotating drafts and small producer wines is admirable, but occasionally can get backed up with slow-moving big, bold beers occupying their taps. Bottom line: bring a casual attitude and you'll be rewarded. More...

This is one of the most popularly rated restaurants in Syracuse on Westcott street, amidst numerous little eateries in a tendu neighborhood. The fare is excellent, copious and clearly made from scratch.  I had the jerk chicken soft tacos: two amply stuffed soft tortillas with shredded, perfectly seasoned chicken, chipotle mayo coleslaw, cheese, salsa, and pineapple. They came with a side salad of lettuce, cucumber in a creamy vinaigrette. So much food that I probably could have taken a taco home.My uncle and aunt got burritos-they were huge. He also ordered the carrot-ginger soup; it looked delicious. The service was good, but our server's continued snark was much unappreciated.  Definitely would come back. More...

We came here after someone had recommended it to us. They said they had a chile rolano burrito that was good. The décor is cool and they have outside seating. Your meal does not come with free chips and salsa. I had the chicken burrito with a side if ride and beans. My boyfriend had the jerk chicken tostada. Both were alright nothing really special. I also had the white sangria which was pretty good. Unfortunately I was a little disappointed with this one. Went in for the first time around 4pm for an early dinner. It was the perfect time to come. Unfortunately happy hour is only during the week, otherwise drinks would have been a steal. Started with chips and guac per friends raving reviews. The guac was very fresh, chips perfectly salted and crispy, which made for a perfect appetizer. Ordered a burrito, which came with 2 sides of choice. It was a packed burrito, I don't think I'll be eating for another 8+ hours. Our waiter was very kind, patient, and easy going. Next time we'll sit outside, though the inside is painted and decorated very cozily. Thanks for a happy stomach, Alto! More...

As we sat down in the barn burner restaurant we quickly ordered guacamole and chips. The Guacamole was fantastic but was a tad small. We also order the chicken Nachos which were out of this world. Than after my kid had a temper tantrum the restaurant couldn't had handled it better. Than the jerk chicken quesadilla was very good but after trying my friends BBQ chicken quesadilla that is the way to go the flavors made my mouth water. I very recently moved to Syracuse and was recommended this place by a coworker. After reading reviews, I was so excited because it has such high ratings. I ordered 2 jerk chicken tacos, chips, guacamole and salsa for take-out. It came out to be $20 total plus tip......Let me start by saying the chips, guac, and salsa are great. The jerk chicken tacos, however, were such a disappointment. When I first looked at the meat I had to do a double-take because the chicken was so dark it looked like steak. Disgusting. The ingredients didn't seem fresh at all to me - even the pineapples on the tacos looked like they came from a can. After choking down one taco (with a fork because it was very soggy), I couldn't bring myself to eat the other one because I was so disgusted by the awful quality of the chicken. Overall this place is definitely NOT worth the high price unless you're only coming for chips, guac & a drink. Such a let-down for a restaurant that prides itself in using "fresh" ingredients. Been here couple of times now. Foods always good, although a bit pricy. Got the soft shell tacos with shrimp with a salad and steam veggies. Boy those tacos were on point. A great combination of sweet and savory with a kick that work very nicely with the shrimp. they toast the shells so that it isn't limpy soft like a wrap nor is it hard like a hard shell. Overall very good food.Service very friendly but very slow.I'd avoid sitting outside. They don't spray it with insect sprays or have anything that deters like any bugs. We had many moths. In fact, I think I saved a present for whomever gets the menu I got . I managed to preserve the wing structure without spilling too much of its guts. During our meal, we also got attacked by a gigantic moth. Must've been like 2-3 inches in wingspan. He/It just kept tackling us and trying to go for the food. Once we managed to get it trapped underneath the table, he/it started to tackle our legs... Thought it was quite an unique experience. More...

Normally the food here is excellent. The last two times however have been very disappointing. The hash browns and egg sandwich breakfast was nothing special. They have changed the bread (formerly Pastas stretch bread) to something boring and tasteless. Hash browns used to have a delicious sauce on top. This time they tasted like fresh from the freezer. Another time there for dinner, one of the managers was busy barking at employees and measuring booths and wall spaces while we were trying to enjoy our meal. Overall rude and unprofessional whoever he was.  Add to that the tostito was seriously lacking and this made for a hugely annoying and disappointing experience. More...

It's been about 5 years since I was last here but glad to see the good things haven't changed (mostly):- Texas Nachos - very generous portions for $8 - they helpfully put the pickled jalapenos on one side to avoid 'contaminating' (for some people) the rest of the plate.- Tostada - a great helping of pulled chicken on top of rice and beans and a crispy tortilla. The tortilla came out a bit mushy with all the toppings piled on and the chicken could use a bit more seasoning (my taste buds are probably more abnormal than average), but otherwise a great value for $6.Downsides: The jalapenos are a bit less spicier than I remember and the the Diablo burrito entree (with the mole sauce!) is no longer on the menu.Pro-tip: The outdoor seating is worth the wait in the spring/summer, but the bar area is very nice as well. My #1 favorite Mexican spot. The new layout since they bought the next door property and expanded the dining room is much, much better for dining in. Bar area is a bit cramped but they do the best they can with the space they have. Wine selections are fairly limited but that probably has a lot to do with storage capacity. The wines they do carry are solid and are more than adequate. Alto Cinco has the best burritos I've ever had. Outstanding. California Burrito with chicken is my go-to. Their mixed green salad with house made lime vinaigrette is really good. Jalepeno cornbread is the best. Everything is awesome really, another place where you could close your eyes and point to something on the menu to order and would be happy with whatever came out. They do take-out as well which is very popular. Highly recommend. More...

Although it doesn't look like much from the outside, Alto Cinco is like a diamond in the rough. I had a wonderful experience here and I would define lay go back despite its location.Food- I ordered a shrimp tostada based on my waiters recommendation. It definitely did not disappoint, my only complaint was there wasn't a ton of shrimp. Overall the tostada was really flavorful and it was definitely a good sized portion. Everything on the menu was reasonably priced based on the amount of food you receive. If I were to go back I would definitely go for a burrito, they looked huge but everyone seemed to be ordering them! Service/Atmosphere- When we walked in we were immediately greeted by two friendly cooks. Our hostess and waiter were also both very friendly. It did take a long time to receive our waters so I was a little nervous about how long the food was going to take. However the food came out at a reasonable time. The atmosphere itself is great! It definitely has an artsy feel to it and it's the perfect place to have brunch. My wife and I have always loved this place but we're beginning to tire of it since they've expanded. It's an hour wait every time you go. The bar is always packed but there are usually empty tables in the dining area. The service is downright bad. You have to wait 20 mins for a waiter to even bring you water. I watched our waiter stand around in the back drinking coffee while all the tables around us were waiting for their food / drinks. Now that I'm done complaining, here is why I still love the place: The restaurant is a charming little place tucked away on a street near SU. They have excellent drinks and a good beer selection. Mostly  very good food with fresh ingredients. Also the waiters usually comp you appetizers or drinks when you give them an indication you're annoyed with the service. Alto Cinco is a place that everyone recommends as a must try in Syracuse. But the food is okay. I usually order the chicken and bean burrito, which is okay. It doesn't have that much flavor for pick up. No matter what they tell you how long it will take for your order add 15-20 minutes past that. The last time I ordered from here, I was standing waiting for 20 minutes before they even started making my burrito. The brunch, on the other hand, is a different story. I have been to this restaurant 2-3 times before and it was fine. However, I will not go back after my experience this evening with my family. We had a wait for a table of 40 minutes, which is not unusual for a Saturday night, but while we were seated in the waiting area I overheard a server ridiculing potential customers who were out on the street considering entering the restaurant and he used a mocking tone and very inappropriate language. A person in our party ordered a shrimp burrito. After he cut into it, he noticed the shrimp had a grey/green tint, which gave the shrimp an appearance of being spoiled and looked quite unappetizing. After several attempts to get our waiter's attention, he came over and I asked for our party's dish to be taken back. He said the shrimp look grey/green because of the sauce the chef uses. He took the plate away to the kitchen and brought the same food/plate back and informed us that the chef said it looked fine. This has never happened to us in a restaurant before. The person in our party did not eat the shrimp burrito and it was not taken off our bill. Alto Cinco's entrees and drinks are pricier than comparable  restaurants in the area. A draught beer is $7 compared to $4 at The Mission and $6 at Munjeds across the street. But what bothers me the most is the attitude of superiority of the waitstaff, the fact that I've never seen a woman server, and the fact that they did nothing, and adopted a patronizing manner, when someone in our party was unhappy with their unappetizing entree. I recommend The Mission downtown or Papa Gallo's in Fayetteville. More...

The atmosphere instantly made me feel  awkward. Seeing as I am young and not of the age to drink there wasn't much I could do in a bar scenario. Although that is not the reason I went to Alto Cinco in the first place. My mother told me the restaurant portion of the establishment was good so I assumed it would be at least moderately welcoming or at least have nice food. Firstly the restaurant was disgusting. The tables were sticky and the chairs weren't in good condition. Also the whole place reeked of smoke even though it was suppose to be a no smoking area. After the waitress took forever to come take our order we waited for about 15 minutes for our food. Which isn't that bad. My fiance's food was in pristine condition. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and I was not impressed. The experience felt very rushed and we weren't even checked on after given our food. In conclusion hopefully the bar portion is better than the food. 2 out of 5 stars. More...

I've had better Mexican, mostly cheaper, in many other places.I've had different burritos and last time I had their Special Ahi Tuna Tostadas, which was spicy and the presentation was really good, however for $18 it should have more tuna on it.The waiting time is tooooo much. and as soon as you're seated, you'll notice the inefficient use of space. While their bar area is packed with people who are waiting for a table, the other area has lots of non-utilized space which they can put some tables, However, I'm not sure if their kitchen can support more people or not.to summarize my review, Food is just ok, but overpriced, waiting time is long and their bathroom is as big as half of their waiting/bar area. I have been to Alto a few times as I used to live in the neighborhood. The food is alright and the bartender was a great conversationalist.  Tonight I ordered a fiesta salad and asked for no cilantro and if I could replace the chicken with steak (because of health issues, I can't eat chicken) I offered to pay extra for the order. After the added guac and sour cream my order came to 14.50.On the way over the delivery guy accidentally called me and said something to the effect of "I f-ing get it". I realized it was a butt dial so I let it slide. When the order came my salad had chicken on the side and no steak. Perplexed I called them. " Alto cinco, can you hold?"-on hold for four minutes-"Alto Cinco"Me: "hi, yes I just got my order and it was a little wrong."AC: "what was wrong with it?"Me: I asked for steak instead of chicken and it came with chicken, I can't eat chicken"AC: ok, and?Me: ...Well I don't want to pay almost fifteen dollars for a salad with no protein on it.AC: hold onAC manager: Heeeeelllllloooooo Alto Cinco!Me: Hi I'm just calling because my order is a little wrong.ACM: what's the name on the order? Oh yeah, there is a couple of things wrong with this order first of all we don't have steak and second of all you asked for no cilantro yet you ordered guac which has cilantro on it.Me: I just don't like a lot of cilantro, I don't actually know why you are telling me what is "wrong" with my order, in the past I have always had the restaurant call me if my grub hub order could not be fulfilled as ordered. This time you didn't ask, I would have gladly taken tofu or something instead, I just can't eat chicken.ACM: tells me the history of how long they have not served steak there.Me: Ok, I just am saying I wouldn't have paid 14.50 for a salad with no protein on it.ACM:It did have a proteinMe: I work at Syracuse University and I wont be using your restaurant in the future if this is how you treat your costumers.ACM: laughing at me, haha ok good, I'm glad, I hope you don't.Me: look, I was having a really bad night, I just wanted to let you know my salad wasn't right and recommend calling the customer if the order can not be completed as ordered.ACM: the only reason the salad was 14.50 was because you added guac and sour cream. If I had taken the order I would have called you and told you we don't have steak.Me: Ok, have a good nightHe never said sorry, he never offered to make things right because in his mind I was wrong and there would be nothing to fix it. I would have been super flexible. I would have gone to pick up a side of TOFU, I would of appreciated an offer of not being charged for the sour cream or guac. A simple apology, even, and I would have been fine. I just think this level of disrespect was unwarranted, luckily I had my phone on speaker phone and my roommate heard the whole conversation. I was being friendly and just wanted to be treated like a paying customer. Unfortunately, I will not be dining here in the future, which ACM made clear that he could not care less about. More...

I've been going here off-and-on for 10 years and unfortunately the verdict is that when you head to Alto Cinco you are almost always in for a mixed experienced. I've been here when the service has been prompt and other times when it's taken much too long to get our food or our check. I've eaten piping hot, delicious burritos and burritos that were extinguished by cold-pickled jalapeños. I've been here when the draft list is incredible, and when it's been overrun by ill-paired heavy beers. Either way, Alto is too expensive for faux-Mexican food, but benefits nicely from having a good location in a city hard pressed to serve real Mexican. I'm sure I'll be back, but it won't be my first choice. More...

Don't let the 3 stars fool you....Alto Cinco is prettttty good. I had to remove a star because I have been there a few times now and the service is always pretty slow. I'm not talking about actually getting your food....I'm talking about getting the CHECK. It's like the staff is up your butt every .3 seconds to see if your food is ok but when its time for the check there isn't an employee in sight. My friend literally had to get up and stalk someone today. Like dude come on I just ate 3 pounds of taco I need to get home ASAP and nap. Also, today my waiter was a little too nice....to the point where it was kind of creepy. Like come on man, I didn't even get a chance to look at my food yet don't ask me how it tastes before you set my plate down. Also, when I ask for a napkin the "someone's getting saucy" remark isn't 100 percent necessary. ALSO, I have 2 fully functioning eye balls, you don't need to waste 4872384 hours telling me the specials with every single ingredient in them when I HAVE THE SPECIALS MENU RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY FACE. Anyways..................Their nachos are underwhelming but their quesadillas are a solid 4/5. My friend got the chicken jerk quesadilla and I got a chicken quesadilla with beans and peppers in it. Well guys the great news is they use real chicken. Unlike a lot of chains that offer quesadillas and you cant tell if you are eating chicken or a wet paper towel. It was a little soggy but that's because I made a special request to add beans (BECAUSE IS IT EVEN MEXICAN IF THERE'S NO BEANS ) The meat portion was also very generous in the quesadilla, which was nice because usually I question if I even got meat in it because I can't find any. It was very filling. And all of the ingredients are fresh. ALSO it was 11 dollars....like a tortilla and some cheese probably costs 89 cents lets be a little reasonable for the poor college kids. I will probably go back but only when I am third wheeling so the couple pays for my meal... More...

Recently stopped for a bite to eat before a concert at the Westcott. I ordered the jerk chicken burrito with a salad and chips and my friend, who wasn't at all hungry, just got an espresso.  She thought the espresso was phenomenal especially after putting 6teaspoons of sugar in it. Unfortunately, the burrito was as cold as if it just came out of the fridge. I've been hearing so many good things about this place. So disappointed. More...

I had high hopes but no, that didn't go as planned.  Next to where I was sitting at lunch time was this loud drilling grinding noise that lasted all through my meal.  Others moved but there was no place for me to go.    I had the shredded chicken salad.    $11.99.  To my surprise the chicken was cold and plain,  no flavor , no sauce.  Expensive for a small uninteresting lunch salad.  All in all a bad experience and I won't be coming back More...

I adore Alto Cinco. I am getting hungry just writing about it! Delicious mexican food with fabulous margaritas (don't expect something super sweet - they do it authentic with a little lime juice -- fabulous!), a delicious catfish quesadilla, and a fabulous brunch (Try the cornbread!!). I miss living in Westcott when Alto Cinco was just around the corner but they have a hip younger brother downtown, called Otro Cinco, also worth checking out. Great late night music as well. The food is fresh but it's not Mexican. I mean they serve guacamole, rice, beans, and "salsa" but more like pico de gallo. You pay for the chips and salsa, it's not a given here. What's missing is the Mexican flavor. The food was good. I had the chicken quesadillas and it was chicken and cheese. I asked for onions to be added. It came with a dollop of sour cream and some "salsa". There just wasn't any flavor to the dish. My friends had the burritos and they didn't have much to say except that the ingredients tasted fresh. It's an okay place to go. Pretty small and service was lacking. We had to ask for refills a couple of times. Not much personality going on with our server...lol. It was fun to try though. More...

Alto Cinco is one of my favorite places to eat! Pretty much everything on the menu is fantastic. A lot of people rave about the catfish burrito but I have yet to try it. I'm a simple man, give me a tortilla with some cheese and chicken and I'll throw some jalapeños on there. Alto goes above and beyond, my particular favorite is the sweet potato fries with a chicken spinach quesadilla, extra jalapeños. Great staff, hip crowd, awesome small bar. More...

Until recently, Alto Cinco really didn't have any competition and lines would spill out on to the street, however with the opening of the awesome Ole! Barely 3-star restaurant. Many times reality falls short of expectation. This is one of those times. I have a few friends that like this place so I decided to try it out via delivery. I got their chicken california burrito and their texas cheese fries. They were both good but nothing spectacular, burrito was soggy and fries were lukewarm. If you were to compare their food to some generic chains, like chipotle (burrito) and texas roadhouse (fries), this place loses unfortunately. Additionally, the prices were far more expensive than at those respective places with close to $20 for the aforementioned items. My recommendation, come here if you want to try a new place but don't expect the stars. More...

Always have a great meal when I go to Alto. The food portions are hearty, the beer selection is well thought out, and contrary to some reviews on here, I always get great service.Don't really have a go to when I come here. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing but I'm usually trying new things. The quesadillas might be my favorite. The jerk chicken is spicier than I expected but blends well. The "cinco special" is actually pretty standard for a Mexican quesadilla but doesn't mean it's not delicious. Extra cheesy. In terms of the burritos, the jerk chicken is similar to the quesadilla. The California packs a mighty punch as well. The super vegan is better than I expected although I thought they could have added a little extra to it. Recently went for brunch and had the huevos rancheros. Can't complain about any part of it except that I didn't get a second. Got a white sangria to finish it off. Great brunch!Don't really have any complaints about this place. They consistently serve me great food and are always friendly when I engage them. Alto Cinco and their sister restaurant Otro Cinco recently catered our wedding and it was outstanding.  I cannot stress enough how absolutely wonderful the owner, Johanna, was to work with, along with her entire team.  From the first point of contact until the very end it was a pleasure.  She and her team also did our flowers- center pieces, corsages, butineors, my bouquet- gorgeous.  When we were creating the menu, they were happy to even go off of the menu and try some new ideas in their kitchen for us.  They truly exceeded our expectations and went above and beyond to make sure each detail was in place.  Everyone at the wedding raved about the food.  We had hors d'oeuvres: cheeses, cornbread, chips and salsa and for brunch: breakfast burritos, hashbrowns, eggs, sausages, french toast with fresh fruit and whipped cream, and fresh green salad.  Phenomenal!!  If you are planning an event of any kind, hands down, call Alto or Otro Cinco. I know a lot of people who really love coming here so I really wanted to love the place, but unfortunately I can only say that I think the food here is just ok. The first two times I had their food was through delivery, and both of those times the food was not so good. Part of that may have to do with my expectations vs. the reality. I was expecting Mexican food, which I know well having moved here from CA. However, the food really isn't Mexican. For example, their rice is not Mexican rice, it is yellow Spanish rice. Here are a few other things I didn't like: The chicken tacos have this weird vinegar-like sauce on them that is just overpowering; when you get anything topped with sauce such as a "smothered"  burrito or enchiladas, the sauce is baked into the food (likely because they don't put much on) which leaves it dry and without much flavor from the sauce; I find their chicken somewhat bland, and finally, they don't have refried beans which I love to eat with burritos, tacos, and rice.Because I have friends who like it here I have given them a few chances to redeem themselves after the first two bad experiences, and those experiences were ok, especially because I knew what to expect this time. I have liked their catfish tacos, and I also like their margaritas and cocktails.I think their menu is slightly overpriced for the quality of food, especially for the Syracuse area. The service is good, and the staff are friendly. Like I said, I know a lot of people who love the food here. Perhaps it just doesn't fit my personal palate. More...

I came here on a Sunday afternoon with my boyfriend and his mom. The food was above average and the service was just average. It is a funky unique vibe that's unique to the area. We started off with the chips, Guac, and salsa. The Guac was amazing, salsa was eh. The chips were EXTREMELY salty, we literally saw clumps of salt on them. We had asked for more and those were better but still too salty. We also had margaritas, which were a little too bitter, but not bad at all. A little pricey for the area.My boyfriend and his mom had the shrimp burrito, which I tried and it was amazing. Pretty spicy. The shrimp were large and delicious. They were cooked perfectly. I had a shrimp quesadilla. It's not on the menu, but I was in the mood for one so I had asked them to substitute it for the jerk chicken quesadilla. It was pretty good, the only thing is that I felt that the shrimp should have been cut up in it, rather than large pieces of it making the balance of cheese and shrimp uneven. I would order it again, the pineapple salsa was excellent. Overall the food was great. The service was par. The food didn't take too long, and our waitress was friendly. But, the host was very rude and the waitress didn't really greet us correctly, or tell us their specials, which we found off putting. The bartender was really nice. Overall, I would definitely come back when we are in town again! More...

85 degrees outside, get your bloody a/c fixed, I one in particular don't care for dining in my own perspiration, unless I'm at the beach. Now onto the reason why I came here. After reading the reviews I had to give it a go. With it being so hot out the Gazpacho sounded great, this is where it goes pear shape. The soup was of a consistency and color never seen before, actually the color reminded me of a really good brown roux. For the beginner "brown Roux" is used in Gumbo's not a soup that comes from the southern coast of Spain. I was happy nacho chips were served along with this bowl of gloop. I call it gloop because it wasn't soup and I was able to dip the nacho chips into it.The Chicken Burrito even though it looked un appetizing on the plate, it was not bad at all. Local Mexican joint. Stopped here after seeing good reviews on Yelp. Got here at 11:15pm after being on the road for 6 hours. Pleasantly surprised they were open and packed with people. That reassured me the food would be fresh. I was seated right away but waited several minutes for the waitress to come take our drink and food order. Coming in into this place it looked a little scary. Definitely reminds me of a college town. Chips and salsa. Chips seem bagged not home made. Salsa is more like pico de Gallo and not salsa. Service is VERY VERY SLOW. Seems like they have one server for the whole place. Calamari was delicious. The chipotle mayo was good. I ordered the jerk chicken quesadilla with pineapple salsa. Pineapple salsa needs to have more pineapple. Jerk chicken had no kick and could barely taste any jerk seasoning. I honestly could have gotten a better quesadilla at Taco Bell, seriously. Lastly, the shady neighborhood would keep me away. Random people just hanging outside talking to patrons is shady.Overall disappointed. More...

I've been here 5+ times now, so I figured it was time to write a review!Alto Cinco has always been a win in terms of taste and quality. The portions are generous, it's got the quirky vibe, and it's always somewhere unique you can take people new to Syracuse/guests from out of town. Favorites include the burritos (particularly Chicken!), quesadillas (the alto cinco special!), and their chips/guac/salsa! Their menu seems to be newly changed/updated - for burritos, you can now pick your sides instead of automatically receiving their cornbread (which is very good) and their house salad (decent) - choices like rice and beans are now available, which I think is GREAT and gives you some options in case cornbread isn't your thing/you want to pass on the veggies ;) That being said, the downsides would be:1. Service is typically very slow - don't go here if you are on a time crunch/have somewhere to be! You could be stuck here for a while. 2. The restaurant tends to be packed, especially on Fridays/weekends and peak meal times. If you have a big party, try and go early for dinner or pick a week day. 3. Related to #2, the service tends to be pretty scatter-brained, since they are rushing around trying to take care of so many patrons. ...but overall the tastiness of the food and the fun atmosphere keep me coming back despite the downsides :) More...

I am someone who loves good service, but sometimes the food is prepared so well and is so fresh that I let bad service slip by. Alto Cinco is one of these places. While there is a big disconnect between the service staff, the kitchen makes up for it with finesse and skill.I had the BBQ tofu burrito with a salad and cornbread. It is one of the vegan options, and I'm not vegan. But, there is so much flavor in this burrito that the meat is not missed at all. The BBQ sauce must be house made. The tofu was prepared well and only added to the dish- it was not mushy, under or over cooked. The texture in this burrito is amazing. From the crunchy lettuce to the soft beans and well-prepared tofu, you are in for a treat if you order this burrito. One negative of the food is the weird salad served next to the burritos. Everyone at my table had a burrito and each was served with a salad with mediocre dressing and was not well put together. It was far to bitter to be served with very little dressing and few other veggies. Maybe the chef wants to add some carrots or tomato to bring this salad up a notch. The corn bread is not something you should forgo. Seriously, it is tasty. More...

Alto Cinco, the place is always being talked about as "hipster palace". Located near Syracuse University. Always busy. Love that it's open until 2am so I have some sort of good grub after work. Good for take-out but if you dine in you get a salad and cornbread with your burrito. When you take out for some reason you don't? Someone clarify? Though not traditional Mexican I do enjoy the salad opposed to rice and beans with my burrito, because burritos are heavy enough alone. I have always liked the food here. Finally got to enjoy the catfish burrito. Last time we went they were sold out and the staff person gave us no other suggestion on what to order or any help what so ever so we left. Alto Cinco lacks some customer service skill I've noticed. Though they do very well despite... Anyway catfish burrito was great, glad I finally got to try it. I normally go for a burrito here. They have healthy burrito options as well as vegan options. The cornbread was absolutely amazing. Not sticky and dry like others. Warm and cake like with a little kick but not too much. I like that they offer different kind of soda and lemonades from bottle and can that are not of the usually Pepsi and coke that comes out of a gun variety. I'm sure I'll be back. More...

I recently moved to Syracuse and this was the first restaurant I stumbled upon that wasn't a chain and it was still open late at night during the summer (something that seems to be difficult to find near the university). It seemed very busy (but again, this could have been because it was the only place open within a 3 mile radius) and up beat so I decided to try it out. At first I was very underwhelmed by the service. We had one gentleman come greet us with waters and did not even offer to go over the extensive menu with us. Not even 30 seconds later he came back asking to take our orders. I had just opened the menu and he hadn't even offered us other drinks besides water yet so we asked for a few more minutes. We decided on drinks and tried numerous times to get his attention but he seemed to be taking to a group of his friends in the corner instead. Finally, another server came by because he noticed us trying to wave down basically anybody who worked there. He asked if we wanted any food... Of course I want food, I am at a restaurant reading your menu and flagging you down. As soon as he took our dinner order he began to walk away before we could tell him we also wanted drinks. The food tasted pretty average. I had the chile relleno burrito which is a mix of my two favorite Tex-Mex meals so I was very excited to have it. It did not have much flavor to it which shocked me so I drowned it in chipotle sauce which at least added a bit of flavor. The burritos come with a side salad and corn bread, something I have never seen at a Tex-Mex restaurant but both were very good. I guess the service took away from my experience but I would definitely go back when I had more time and was not as hungry. Just keep an open mind that the service is mediocre at best. They are more 'order takers' than servers. The food was good, though and I would recommend it for a quick bite in a college town. More...

We heard great things about the food but not the service. Decided to try it for our anniversary dinner and were not disappointed! We went rather early on a Friday night and only waited about 5 minutes for a table. Our server was super friendly and attentive. The guac and chips were tasty,  our drinks (pinot grigio and Dos Equis) were reasonably priced, and our entrees were huge! My husband had a chicken jerk burrito with salad and corn bread and I had the daily special- jerk shrimp tacos (2) with back beans and yellow rice. We both brought home enough for a second meal. Both meals were spicy and tasty. If anything negative can be said, it's that the black beans were bland, but there were at least 4 different hot sauces on the table. We used to live in Syracuse and this was my favorite place. I was here last night after 7 years and was a bit disappointed. Even though they have a much larger space now, the hostess was not warm and friendly. This is not a kid friendly place, no high chair for my little one. The food was tasted good, but I wish my Mexican pizza was served warm. We ordered sweet potato fries for my little one, but that was also brought in after a long wait. The rest order tasted good - chicken tostada and soups. What was disappointing is that our server came to the table only if we looked out for him, he never checked in after the food was served. Do I still love the food? Yes. Will I go back? Not sure. More...

My favorite place- the only downside is that the wait for your food can be a bit long, which can be hard with kids (thus the -1 star).  Love the catfish tostada (I request it on a soft tortilla)- it is the perfect amount of food! One of my favorite places to go sans kids or for takeout! More...

Everyone in Syracuse should experience this restaurant.  If you can get a seat there awesome, otherwise I suggest take out.  My favorite meal was an order of the calamari and vegetarian enchiladas with the green sauce.  I have dreams about this meal.  I wish Syracuse was closer so I could order it again. Long wait for mediocre food that was overpriced. We also had items missing from our order. Second time we ordered from this place and not happy. Price is not worth it.

I've been to Alto dozens of times and I haven't had a single thing off of the menu yet that I didn't love (this is coming from a picky eater.) They offer tons of delicious, healthy meals for a reasonable price. The service is great and the restaurant has a really cool vibe to it. This is hands down one of the best local restaurants! I used to look forward to going here and ordering the catfish burrito.  It was overpriced years ago (I think it was $9 or $10) but I could look passed it because it was really good.  Just moved back to Syracuse and eating here for the first time in 5 years was really disappointing.  All the food was way overpriced and the service was lackluster.  It took us about an hour to get our meals. The catfish burrito hardly had any catfish in it.  The very little catfish that was in the burrito was overcook in stale oil and was cold.  I'm pretty sure it was pre-cooked and most likely sitting under a heat lamp for a while.  The salad was soggy and wilted. The best part about the dish was the cornbread. I know they expanded the dining room but this place is still way too small for the volume they are doing.  Hence the long wait to be seated and the poor service.  If you are going to charge $13.75 for a burrito, you really need to bulk up the plate with more greens and include twice the amount of protein in the burrito.  In most Mexican restaurants chips and salsa are complimentary, but Alto charges $5 for it.  Stop ripping off your customers and start taking a little bit of pride in the food and service.  I won't be coming back. Would give 0 stars - we left after 45 minutes of poor service and no food.  Went years ago and it was good.  Seated upon entering - which was nice, but had to wait 15 minutes to place our drink and meal orders.  After 30 minutes, no offer for follow up drinks or updates on where/when we could expect to see our food.  Not even an offer to order chips & salsa.  Waiter seemed annoyed when asked how much longer.  From the moment we walked in, he actually seemed annoyed that he had to wait on us (tall w/handlebar 'stache).  Walked out after 45 minutes as he never provided an update on when we could expect our orders.  I'll take my money elsewhere.  Very snooty vibe from the wait staff.  Life is full of choices, if you don't enjoy waiting on customers, perhaps you shouldn't work in a restaurant. 1st time here and didn't live up to the hype. Service was incredibly slow snd lacking to us 5 moms on a night out. Chips, salsa and guac were good but can't imagine how hungry we would have been if we didn't order this as an appetizer. Our food took at least 40 minutes to arrive. A dining companion asked for sour cream and never received it. Our food came out without the sour cream or guac we ordered. Someone's salad was missing the dressing. Two of us ordered the shrimp quesadillas and though decent wouldn't order again. We both thought the menu it said it came with beans and rice but it was only filled with cheese and shrimp- too boring. I looked at menu online at home and it describes as served but I swear their physical menu states differently. More...

Got the jerk chicken burrito upon recommendation from Alex L and others. It was delicious -- you have to get it. But be prepared, it's pretty spicy! This burrito is huge, and it's served with plenty of rice, beans, jalapeno slices, and a sweet mango slices. Man, so many flavors in one burrito. You get the sweet from the salsa, salty & savory from the chicken, creamy from the cheese, and the fresh-feeling from the rice. The beans give it that heartiness. The chicken... man... Usually with meats cut small and finely they can get lost in the rest of ingredients, but it was noticeable enough JUST to realize its taste. It was obviously marinated well, fiery, and fragrant, but there wasn't any smoky flavor like I thought was a part of jerk chicken dishes. 8/10Like Alex L said, the corn bread was so good that I saved it for last. And yeah, it is better than Dino's. Although I did miss some of that "corn-feel" on the texture. But it was soft and spongy, so it's good enough. I had this meal with the saranac prism white ale. Deeeeeeelicious. Bartender, staff, everyone makes you feel like they're glad you're there. Food is crazy good, quantity has always been enough for two meals unless I'm starving. Fresh ingredients. Subtle flavor. This is so far from most Mexican food CNY it's worth a trip within 25 miles or more. Hell I'm 3000 miles away but business means I'm in the 'Cuse like it or not! Can't wait to try their sister restaurant. Don't worry about a bit of a wait. It'll be worth it. First time there and not sure what to order..easy: Jerk Chicken Burrito. Being from the West Coast I know good Mexican TexMex or maybe dare I say Mexican Fusion...and this is the real deal with some serious quality cooking for really reasonable prices. This is truly a place you'll be glad you discovered. More...

Sure we had to sit and wait about 30 mins for our food to be ready but the restaurant is very pleasant with interesting decor. Ultimately the chips and salsa were delicious (definitely fresh) and the food (i got the catfish quesadilla) was absolutely delicious. Not the best Mexican food I've ever had but a very close second. It was worth the wait. I've noticed some complaints about staff... Everyone i encountered was pleasant and helpful, i doubt rudeness could take away from the foods exceptional quality and taste. My sis and I had lunch here the other day. While we know this is not a Vegan restaurant, apparently the few Vegan offerings have dwindled to even fewer. We ordered the vegan burrito and the vegan tostado, it was good but it would have been better if the waiter had informed us it was actually the same exact dish except the tostado was crunchy, we'll sort of crunchy. Also the two cocktails we had were $7 a piece and contained very little alcohol. The total bill was $34 and was not worth it at all. Plus service was very very very slow.We won't be going back More...

This place is always such a disappointment, and I'm floored that it has 4 stars. I'm assuming it's because Alto stands out as a gem among the other sub par eateries on Westcott, and as such there's a false sense of having a decent meal if forced to eat in this neighborhood. The service here is terribly slow, and always incredibly rude. The only exception is a lovely bartender we had today. He was slammed- so still slow service- but very friendly. The food is flat out boring. It's such a perversion of what a good Mexican or Tex-Mex place should be. It's also insanely overpriced for the quality. Everything is fresh- I'll give them that- but it lacks in flavor and over compensates in price. More...
