Describe your creative process.
After gathering some information from the client, I tend to go right into research. I look at competitor's branding, I look at how they are marketing to their audience, I look at their branding and the message they are trying to send. I look at the client's brand and how it differs, who they are marketing to and how I can follow their brand message and how I can try to interpret/execute it in my own way.
After research, my process differs based on what the project is. If it's a video I may go look at animation templates and transitions I may want to use that fits the mood and feel of the video. If it's a logo I'll start sketching rough ideas first, that way I can get a lot done at once, rather than start a computer piece and take longer. For a brochure I may look for inspiration on a new way to fold it or lay it out on the internet.
Then I start making my first draft once I get the information/copy from the client. I may send a proof of a look I want to try out - just a few pages - to see if the client likes where I'm headed. This saves us both time in the long run because if I do an entire booklet and the client dislikes it, I have to spend time doing it over again and they have to wait for me to do so.
Second draft is the completed piece up to my standards - if the look of the first proof is approved.
Then I send all native files and you can proudly show off your new marketing material!
What information do you need from a client before you can start work?
I need to know the company, the product, the message/feeling you want to convey through the piece, who the audience is, who the direct competition is.. there is no such thing as too much information in this case!
What do you love most about your job?
I love when a client is happy with the work that we both had a hand in. I don't give up until the client is happy with the finished product.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I have been doing freelance for a few years now. It gives me some breadth in my work so it's not always just the client's from my day job. I love design and I love seeing people happy with the product we have both worked hard to make - because the client has just as much say as I do.
