I dropped in to Alavanca twice as a visitor. I was immediately welcomed by Professor Tim, and jumped on the mats. The facilities are clean and well-stocked with supplies. The mats are soft and comfortable for the joints. I went to the fundamentals Jiu Jitsu class, and learned some details that helped my game. The class is strictly one hour long – 5 mins warm-up, 5 mins situational drilling, 30 min technique instruction, 17 min situational rolling, 3 min bowing out. The folks there are like most other BJJ academies, warm, welcoming, friendly, and happy to share techniques and exchange ideas. I went back home knowing that I made a few more friends in Calgary. I highly recommend others to check it out. More...

It’s getting so full! My son is in the kids classes and originally they had a good ratio and now there’s at least 30 kids in the class. It’s nice because it’s high quality competitive jiujitsu and wrestling. More...

One-on-one promotion they have until sep 15, I bought it. Had my first session today with coach Brysco. I really enjoyed it. Tim is a head coach he is amazing to deal with.Have to say my both kids are in this club, my oldest is almost 2 years here and my youngest started too. Very good team, attentive coaches.I made a decision to start bjj too, but hesitated for few months feeling shy to start. This is why private training felt best option for me. if you are like me take private’s. It goes on your pace and all attention is for you.I think everyone should have skills which Jiu-Jitsu gives. Super self défensive , full contact confidence. Opening own capacity.Thank you Alavanka team More...

For the past several years Alavanca (formerly MMAU) has been my home gym in Calgary, Alberta. Of the wide-array of Brazilian jiu-jitsu head coaches I have met, Tim Blanchard stands amongst the select few that encompass what it means to be a community leader, martial artist, businessman, and friend. In founding Alavanca, Tim has created a community for the diverse demographic of individuals and families that the art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu tends to attract. His teaching methodology is capable of being grasped by all, and his knowledge and continued interest to learn and grow as a grappler himself, makes his gym one of the best places to take up Brazilian jiu-jitsu while in Calgary. I’ve been training at Alavanca for two months now once or twice a week whenever work allows me to and I love it!Tim and his team definitely know how to create a great community for martial arts and are amazing at giving BJJ classes. Process is so smooth and the facility is just so nice, modern, all white and clean. They have shower and everything you need. Since I’ve been practicing BJJ, even if I’m still a beginner, I’ve gained so much confidence, balance and strength. First class is free so you guys go try and enjoy! More...

I live in Olds and travel to the city just to train at MMAU....and I don't like cities. It's a great facility with excellent coaches and training partners. One of the best things about this gym is the lack of ego. You always feel welcome. It makes no difference if it's your first day or you've been there for years, you'll always be greeted by somebody. The martial arts spirit is strong at MMAU! More...

There are different age group kids that make the adaptation easier for the new kids. The classes are going every day so if you miss a class you dont have to wait for your next week class.I would definitely recommend this place. If you want to train with the best, whether to fight internationally or just for fun, this is the spot! Owner and Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Professor Tim Blanchard is one of the most devoted and patient coaches you will ever have the pleasure to train under. The team's supportive and welcoming atmosphere (whether it's your first class or 100th) will make you feel like part of the family. Alavanca achieves international recognition with their affiliation with Atos Jiu-Jitsu (Andre Galvão, 3rd degree black and 5 time world champ) and Bang Muay Thai (Duane Ludwig, UFC coach to TJ Dillashaw and 2 time coach of the year). When I first stepped foot through the doors of MMA U five years ago, I was completely new to the world of mixed martial arts. I wanted to get in better shape and I figured why not learn some self-defence skills in the process. I remember my first Jiu-Jitsu class and how awkward I felt trying to “shrimp” across the mats. I remember getting submitted again and again by pretty much everyone I rolled with. I was amazed at how easily my best efforts were repeatedly countered and at the seemingly endless number of ways I could be forced to tap. I knew I had to learn this magical power that allowed guys and girls half my size to exert such complete physical control over me. Besides having my mind blown by the awesome powers of jiu- jitsu, I was also blown away by how nice people were. Every person I rolled with introduced themselves with a smile and the customary hand slap/fist bump combo, and after wiping the mats with me, I’d be congratulated for a good roll with same slap/fist bump. I realised over the years of training at MMA U that this feeling of camaraderie and friendship is something that comes from the top down. Owner and black belt Professor Tim Blanchard, along with the other awesome coaches, have always done an amazing job of creating a team environment where students trust, help and encourage one another. When you are a member at MMA U you are truly part of a family, but don’t let this family vibe fool you, we get down to some serious business here. If you’re just starting out, there are people who will teach you, and if you’re a seasoned player looking for a new place to train, there are people who can push you to the next level. Professor Tim has done an excellent job of creating a world class training facility that attracts elite athletes who in turn can become your training partners. The equipment is new and well maintained with plenty of heavy bags, a huge mat space, free weights, a full sized octagon and an area for cross fit. From Muay Thai to BJJ to Wrestling to Cross Fit, MMA University is a great place to start your training or progress to your next level. They also have a great kids' program that I wish my parents had put me in when I was a kid. For the skill and level of commitment and passion displayed by the coaches as well as the excellent facilities I highly recommend coming and giving MMA U a try. More...
