I have had a horrible experience with management. I actually really like the trainers, all of them seem knowledgeable and eager to help. This isn’t enough to compensate for their shady business practices. I regret not reading these comments to begin with, because it would of saved me a lot of money. I misunderstood the contract and thought I signed up for a 1 year membership and to start off I would try 1 month trainer. Turns out if you select a trainer during your contract, they sign you up for a year. 30 days later I told them I can’t afford a trainer at this time so I won’t be needing one for the next month. They told me I was locked into a year contract with a trainer, but I could freeze the account and resume it later. I agreed and have the emails to prove it. 3 months later my account still hasn’t been frozen, I paid $750 in total, I was told that they would give me store credit, I received 0 store credit, and now they aren’t answering my calls or email.After talking with Jen via email she actually refunded me and took the trainer out of my contract. Selection of equipment is good, and it is in good condition. People, both staff and other members, are pleasant and nice to be around. The towel service is a nice touch. The number and variety of classes is good for those who wish to participate. We are quite happy with our membership here, and we have been members of many other gyms. I've seen a few negative posts in regards to other's gym cancelation experience and I wanted to take a moment to share a different view. Recently, I learned that my automatic billing hasn't stopped following my cancelation request. I reached out to AK Fitness and ultimately spoke to Jen. She was very prompt, understanding, and provided a resolution. What was so great is that during the entire process she assured me that she would make things right- and she did! A Damn fine gym for serious lifters. 24/7 with key card, 3 squat racks, sauna rooms and good personal trainers. Not for the PF crowd.
AK fitness also has surprising convenient child care options (with a 90 minute time limit per day). I've been a member on and off as geography permits for just under 10 years and in that time I've had many postivpo interactions with that staff, and never had anyone try to sell me something I didn't need or don't want. What a great gym.  I travel to Anchorage one to two times a year for business.  Always make sure to stay at a hotel close so I can train at this place early in the am. Facility is open 24/7 — the height of availability. Invariably, everyone I've seen working at ALASKA FITNESS is competent and congenial without being smarmy. They're good people and always helpful. The gym offers a wide variety of exercise machines. I especially like the new machines installed this year. The people using them, the gym rats, are serious without being judgmental. In town for just a couple of days, on business.  I'm training for my first powerlifting meet so I need a place that will let me do deadlifts (some "so-called 'fitness centers'" prohibit such basic exercises! ).  Landed after 2230 and called the gym.  I was psyched someone actually answered the phone - I have a membership to Anytime Fitness so I'm familiar with 24-hour facilities but normally those are only for members with a key; the facilities aren't staffed 24 hours.  Alaska Fitness IS!  They guy on the phone was super nice and assured me I could do whatever exercises were on my program.  I showed up just before 6 am, he was still working, and we had a nice conversation about my meet and progress.  As some have mentioned, yes the equipment is older.  Who cares.  It's perfectly functional.  They had everything I needed for my workout, and more.  Fair price.  Great customer service.  I'd definitely recommend this gym - unless you're looking for some high end spa type of facility.....I was not. Excellent gym. Very old school, Gold's Gym/NYC-esc, grungy and small- it has a close feel with an intimate yet spacious setting. Excellent friendly staff and contractually honoring of cancelation if need be. Open, honest and straightforward. Alaska Fitness has a great staff, friendly environment, good equipment and best of all they are open 24 hours!! I love this gym and they have helped me reach many goals in my fitness journey. First gym I've joined. All good. Good amounts of free weights and machines. Cardio section and rooms for classes is nice. Facility is clean with towels and wipes provided . Staff are friendly and helpful. Very knowledgeable and open to answer questions as needed. The other gym members are focused on working out but will step in if they see you need assistance. I appreciate that you can pay for an entire year's membership up front (its a special offer that may not always be available). I've never had to wait around to use equipment despite this gym getting busy at times. Some staff are more friendly than others, but they're all professional. The only issue I've had worked in my favor but should nevertheless be stated. I was planning on renewing my membership (paying for entire year) at the end of September. I inquired in August if this was still possible, and I was told it was. I was going to go in last week to pay for that renewal when, coincidentally, I saw on my credit card bill that I was charged on August 10. I was surprised that I got billed without receiving any sort of notification/receipt (I understand the concept of rolling over renewals unless the customer ends his/her contract). Stopped in today while visiting my family here for the Thanksgiving holiday. They were very helpful and made it easy for me to drop in. They had clean towels and the locker room and showers were clean. I even used the sauna in peace. My daughter also had a fun time in the kid care area. Thank you. Alaska is the place to workout with the fair monthly dues.  They do have older equipment but not old as other reviews claim it to be.  Free weights and cables are just that, treadmills could use an upgrade but again it works fine every time I use it.  The sauna and steam room is always empty in the morning.  Towels are available at the front desk and trainers are available for an extra fee; however, the classes are free including yoga, Piyo, zumba, insanity, etc.  childcare is available for $5 and I think you can get a punch card.The only major downside I can think of is the location - next door to TACO KING. Sometimes it's nearly impossible to get that extra rep while exposed to the sexy scent of carne asada. More...
