We tried Akadi this evening and it was delicious. Everything was perfectly spiced! The vegan coleslaw is tangy and such a nice balance to the richer black beans and red stew rice. Also, the plantains were fried up perfectly! Tried fufu for the first time and it did not disappoint. We will definitely go back More...

My partner and I eat here at least twice a month. We'd never had Western African cuisine. Now we're obsessed. Our typical order is predictable and flavorful: the plantains, the sumusas, and the mafe stew with fufu. The house made dipping sauce for the plantains and sumusas is hands-down my favorite hot sauce. I would put it on everything if I could. If you love peanut butter, the mafe is scrumptious and filling. Lots of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options here, too. Wash it all down with a ginger lemonade. It's divine. More...

If you haven't tried this establishment yet, you are trippin! I've instantly voted this my favorite restaurant, out of all the African & Carribean eateries in the city, with Dalo's (Ethiopian) coming in 2nd. The Suya Chicken plate, the Samusa, the Veggies Yassa w/brown rice, of course the Plantain (Alloco), The Lamb and Goat Jolof plates, their rice and peas, the grilled fish dishes....pretty much the whole damn menu is epic and I didn't even get to the drink menu!Ethnic foods with REAL flavor has started a upward trend in this town over the past 3 years and Akadi is leading the way. What a wonderful experience! If you've never had west African food, this is the place to try it! We had such a great time here between the food, music and service, it's just a lovely place. The restaurant is casual and decorated with an African theme (mural, paintings and colorful tables). The music is super fun and really makes the vibe in my opinion.I've never had west african food so I was really curious about the flavors. The chef is from Ivory Coast and cooks family recipes. We ordered the fried plantain which are an absolute must! So soft and sweet, and come with a flavorful red sauce. This sauce had dairy in it, but if you opt for the spicy sauce it's completely vegan. We tried a few dishes but the star of the meal for me was the spicy okra and spinach stew which was so hearty and delicious! It comes with fufu which is made from yam and is kind of doughy almost, it pairs so well with a stew. We thoroughly enjoyed all of the dishes- everything seemed to be slow cooked and authentic (but what do I know), and the service was top notch. Our server George was great and took the time to explain to us about the different ingredients and made suggestions. Such great vibes at this place, we will definitely be back soon to try more dishes! More...

I would go back for the food any day. Who knew that there would be an awesome Ivorian place here The flavors were amazing and I'm heavily considering stopping back to buy some of their homemade sauces. Sort of a hole in the wall and the bathroom could be kept up more nicely, but the overall experience for the food made it well worth it. More...

Absolutely marvelous, memorable food from Western Africa.During our last visit we had the green lentil samosas (maybe the most delicious we've eaten in Portland) accompanied by Akadi's spicy homemade sauce and a pair of delightful entrees -- alloca poisson braise (a whole fried tilapia bathed in a tangy mustard sauce and served with sweet plantains and a side of salad, along with more of Akadi's sauce), and the beef suya (marinated grilled beef covered in kankankan spice and served with sweet plantains). The fish was tasty and delectable, and the beef suya was rich and pleasantly chewy, like a softer version of jerky. We were impressed by everything, particularly the plantains and the distinctive homemade sauce. Everything we were served was cooked to perfection. The restaurant is warm and inviting, and the service was extremely cordial. This is a restaurant with an exciting menu, one that warrants repeat visits. I can't recommend Akadi PDX more highly. More...

Wow place is a hidden gem. My mouth waters upon writing this. The roasted chicken and the fried tilapia were perfectly seasoned. The couscous that comes with the dish was perfect. I ordered a side of white rice and it was perfectly cooked, and that's something coming from a se asian guy where rice is a staple. I wasn't a fan of the peanut stew though. I'm giving 4 stars because when I order lentil samosas, it was kinda burnt. But overall, this is a great spot. Can't wait to be back! More...

I have no basis for comparison to other Ivoirian cuisine but to an American palette this is pretty sensational."The Goat" is justifiably revered but on your second time here be sure to branch out, the menu has plenty of gems. Some dishes can be quite spicy, some not at all, so worth asking if that's a concern (there is no Thai-restaurant-style spice meter). More...

Wow wow wow. I must admit, I had no idea what kind of food I'd be eating when I heard that Akadi was catering an event I was attending. I'm from Detroit and had never heard of Akadi. The catered meal was excellent - the chicken stew, Gofu, yassa were all so flavorful and the rice was a perfect side. I went back for seconds and piled my plate higher than my first pass. Unfortunately, I didn't get a photo of my mix up of entrees, but the other photos on here tell the story. I'm a big fan of West African food now! Who knew? More...

Fantastic food.  My daughter and I shared green lentil samusas, which were perfectly fried with great taste and texture inside.  Then we split two entrees.  The menu is not posted, so I don't remember the names of the two, but one was a chicken in creamy peanut sauce dish (we added vegetables for $1.00 more) over rice, and the other was a spicy beef dish with fries.  Both came out quickly and were absolutely delicious.  Food was hot, perfectly seasoned and unlike anything I've had before.  Staff was friendly.  Highly recommended! I came to Portland from the Bay Area and had a bunch of restaurants I was recommended to try, but my brother and I decided to drive around and try something new. I've never had West African food before and am so glad I tried Akadi. We had three dishes: chicken samosas (appetizer), spinach stew with fish/shrimp and fufu, and beef suya with fried plantains. All the dishes came out hot and fresh, and were so unique and delicious. I really can't choose a favorite dish as each was amazing in itself. Samosas were crispy. Spinach stew is a must if you like seafood. I've never had fufu (similar to a milder mashed potato flavor), and the flavor of the stew paired well with the fufu. Beef suya was chewy (which I like) and flavorful, and came with two dipping sauces. Fried plantains were out of the world, sweet and crispy and hot.We also got a malt drink and hibiscus lemonade. The malt is like a sweet and milder Guinness while the lemonade was not too tart, sweet, or floral but a good balance of all three.Cherry on top was the extremely friendly and helpful staff. There are many places in Portland with thousands of reviews and 4-5 stars, but I highly recommend ditching the lines and giving this place a try.
