Q&As

I've been interested in magic ever since my parents bought me a magic set for Christmas one year - so, pretty much for my whole life! Since 1998 I've been the president of my local magic society, Southend Sorcerers, and every year, among other things, we stage a week long theatre show which I produce, perform in and compere. So magic is not just a job - it's a passion, and I try to pass on that passion in all my performances. I've also been a radio presenter for a long time and have worked at various radio stations over the years, including Essex FM and Southend Radio.

Close up magic performed right under your nose is the most self contained entertainment there is. As a series of personal performances, it relies entirely on the skill, dexterity and personality of the performer and I've been able to present my shows at hundreds of weddings, parties and business or social functions. Think of a card - I'll tell you which one you've got in mind! Think of a number - I'll read your mind or teach you how to read mine! Objects like rings and coins take on a life of their own, vanishing and appearing in all sorts of impossible places. Astounding tricks with cards and coins, and amazing mind reading to leave you and your guests completely baffled - and all done with good fun, humour and an engaging personality.

Ideal for club or society dinners, my cabaret magic is a great way to entertain your entire audience; for example, it perfectly bridges the gap between the end of a meal and music for dancing, giving your guests time to relax and be entertained. My cabaret spot, where I can perform for anywhere between 10 minutes and an hour depending on your requirements, involves audience participation, a lot of laughs and some baffling magic which will leave your guests amazed. Mind reading, dancing handkerchiefs, things disappearing and appearing – they’re all part of the show. I can also present a ‘parlour’ or small stage magic act which is designed to bridge the gap between close-up magic and a full cabaret spot. This type of show is ideal in more intimate settings for an audience of between 15 and 20 people. It’s a great way to round off a dinner party or a business meeting.

I'm genuinely a people person - which is so important for any magician - so my favorite part of the job is meeting people and seeing the looks on their faces when something inexplicable has just happened. It's a unique ice breaker and it's so nice to be able to warm things up at a wedding where some people don't know each other all that well. I see my job as making someone's special day even more memorable for them and their guests, by providing magical moments that people will talk about long after the day is over.

It was actually more by chance to be honest. I was always a magic enthusiast, but when my wife came home from work at a playgroup one day and announced that she'd booked me to perform at their Christmas party that year, it was a bit flabbergasting! But I really enjoyed the experience - and the rest, as they say, is history.

Good question. For one thing I have many years of experience and literally hundreds (if not thousands) of satisfied clients. I can honestly say that I've never received a bad review or complaint in all my years as a magician. The other thing I think is important is to give customers a fully focused personal service. So, for example, if I'm booked for a wedding, that will be my only commitment for that day. I never accept multiple bookings on the same day which means that if I'm needed for an extra hour, it's never a problem. I genuinely do my best to make sure that my clients always receive the best service possible - and I have never let a customer down or cancelled a booking since day 1.
