Q&As

Supporting those who need a little support to explore emotions and situations more fully, to build self esteem, to cope with depression and/or to overcome issues of childhood abuse is extremely rewarding. Helping others to learn more about counselling and/or to become counsellors themselves means that little by little the world can change for the better as we seek to develop and improve our listening and helping capabilities. It's enjoyable to work with those already practicing and be able to guide and encourage good practice for the benefit of all clients everywhere.

Being my own boss means I can opt to pick and choose what I do from day to day, and no two days are the same. I like being busy and I enjoy a variety of activities. This flexibility enables me to offer a range of services and it keeps my mind active. I can choose to indulge in holistic practice, use my experience as a counsellor to support an individual by talking through their issues in a safe space. We can sit outside or inside, we can walk and talk and we can use a variety of techniques and tools to help build strength and coping strategies. I can engage in developing and writing courses for those seeking to learn about counselling and related issues and be a guide to those already practicing and I enjoy it all.

Being largely person centred in my approach means I can offer a non judgemental, enabling environment in which to explore situations and emotions and where you can develop new skills and new perspectives and move forward. I am a fully qualified counsellor with a Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling from Nottingham University which I gained in 1993. I also have a PGCE which allows me to teach and a mindfulness diploma which means I can incorporate techniques that alleviate anxieties and stress. I trained in a sexual abuse crisis centre and did a placement at the child sexual abuse unit in Derby. I have been a foster parent to two very damaged children. I have also been a special needs teacher in a specialist school for severely autistic children and young people. I have dealt with both sides of the adoption scenario, have dealt with issues of infertility, bereavement and loss and with depression, long term and terminal illness and suicidal tendencies. I have a full diploma in aromatherapy and massage and I am a Usui Reiki master. I am interested in alternative healing modalities and believe in treating the whole person. Often, issues affecting our emotions also play a part in our physical wellbeing and our thinking and mental health can be affected too. Exploring the mind, the body and the more spiritual aspects of the self can mean a move towards a more healthy person overall. There is no obligation to undertake additional therapies, but the opportunity to do so is available.
